Meet the Neighbors! The Northwest Valley of greater Phoenix’s diverse communities offer a variety

of services for active, mature adults and families. Here’s some information about them and how they make one big neighborhood.

In 1960, Del Webb launched the first phase of active retirement communities that has made the Northwest

Valley the home of choice for active retirees. Sun City has seven activity centers with 500,000 square feet of space providing classes, social events, and favorite activities for its mature adult residents, along with eight golf courses and two bowling centers. With over 26,000 homes, a prospective resident can choose from single family homes, garden apartments, duplexes and quads. Not an incorporated city, Sun City is a self-governing commmunity, run by the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. suncityaz.org.Just west of Sun City is Sun City West, the next phase, established in 1978. Here you’ll find four recreation centers, seven golf courses and countless organized activities and clubs. suncitywest.org.Continue west on Bell Road to find Sun City Grand, the newest of the Sun Cities. Completed in the late 1990s, is a carefully planned community that also offers diverse activities, clubs and classes to its senior residents. grandinfo.com.

The City of El Mirage is tucked between Grand Avenue and the west bank of the Agua Fria River. A bustling family community, El Mirage

is home to over 32,000 residents. Gateway Park provides outdoor fun for kids, a dog park, baseball fields and a pleasant walking path. The Creative Aging program keeps seniors active in the arts and a rotating gallery of art exhibits can be seen at the Senior Center Art Gallery. El Mirage partners with the Dysart Unified School District, Dysart Community Center and Maricopa County Library District to ensure a high quality lifestyle for its residents. More information: cityofelmirage.org.The City of El Mirage is proud to have the new Northwest Valley Family YMCA located at 12450 W. Cinnabar Ave. in Gateway Park. The YMCA has lots of programs for youth and adults, and the Silver Sneaker program at the YMCA has been a wonderful addition for the seniors in the community. For more information on the Northwest Valley Family YMCA call 602-688-5335.

The Sun Cities

El Mirage

Just on the east side of the Agua Fria River from El Mirage is the town of Youngtown. This small town of about 6,000 residents bears

the distinction of being the nation’s first master-planned community designated for retirees, establishing the rule that one person in each household must be 65 years of age or older. Development began in 1954 on an area of just 1.3 square miles. Since 2000, the population has more than doubled after the repeal of the town’s age restrictions. youngtownaz.org.

Bearing the distinction of being the only Valley city to reside in two counties, Peoria is mostly in Maricopa County, while a small portion in the north is in Yavapai County. Named after Peoria, Illinois, this Northwest Valley city was founded in 1897 and is now the sixth largest in Arizona for land area, and ninth for population, at over 159,000.The Peoria Sports Complex, shown below, is the shared home of Spring Training for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners. In 1999, most of the land around Lake Pleasant

Regional Park was annexed into Peoria. Peoria is also home to the Challenger Space Center of Arizona and the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, completed in 2007. With a current identity more related to resort and leisure, Peoria’s economic plan is to establish the new Loop 303 freeway corridor as an industrial, commercial, mixed development use rather than for residential development. peoriaaz.gov.

Surprise has grown smartly and efficiently, offering its residents a perfect setting with all the services, attractions and amenities. The 2012 census counted 121,300 residents, living in 69.5 square miles. The median age of this non-age-restricted city is 46 years, with an even mix of families under 45 and mature adults over age 45. There are several age restricted communities, with all the social and recreational amenites, such as Sun City Grand.Surprise is the Spring Training home of the 2010 AL Champ Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals (see page 34). There are 8 open-to-the-public golf courses (see page 36). Points of pride are the Surprise Recreation Campus, which includes Surprise Stadium, Tennis and Racquet Complex, with pickleball courts, the Civic Center and the White Tank Mountains. surpriseaz.gov.

Glendale bills itself as “Arizona’s Antique Capital” and with good reason. The historic downtown area takes the serious shopper out of the desert and onto brick sidewalks lined with white picket fences, grassy yards and gardens, and shops built from old houses. Founded in 1892, Glendale was once home to a temperance colony, Beet Sugar Factory and thriving cotton agriculture. Today, Glendale is known for its Historic Downtown shopping, the popular Arrowhead Towne Center mall, ASU’s west campus, Westgate Entertainment District and Tanger Outlets adjacent to the University of Phoenix Stadium and Gila River Arena sports venues. It covers 55.8 square miles in area and its population exceeds 228,000. Plans for a METRO light rail extension to open in 2026, serving Glendale will make it even more of a popular destination. See page 16 for more about Historic Downtown Glendale. glendaleaz.com.

Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State ParkGranite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park opened to the public on November 30, 2016. On the second anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire, Arizona State Parks purchased 320 acres of State Trust land near the site where 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots sacrificed their lives while battling one of the most devastating fires in Arizona’s history.

On June 28, 2013, lightning struck a hilltop above the town of Yarnell, AZ, starting the Yarnell Hill Fire. The 20-member Granite Mountain Hotshots crew was deployed to the site in the early morning hours on June 30th. The crew spent most of the day fighting the fire to save Yarnell, its people, its property and land. The fire pushed them back toward a ridge overlooking the town. While the crew worked to reach safety, the fire grew around their position and ultimately trapped them, forcing the crew to deploy shelters. Officials lost radio contact with the crew as the fire consumed their position. It took the lives of

19 Granite Mountain Hotshots. The last member, Brendan McDonough, who was serving as the nearby lookout, survived. News about the 19 fallen hotshots swept across the community, state and nation. Efforts to honor their sacrifice began soon

after. State lawmakers passed legislation appropriating $500,000 for the purchase of the land at the site of the Yarnell Hill Fire.

The trail is a difficult seven mile round-trip hike, climbing 1,200 feet on the Hotshots trail and another 400 feet on

the Journey Trail. If you go, dress appropriately, bring adequate water and food. Plan on a four hour round-trip hike. Along the trail are 19 stone plaques honoring each of the fallen hotshots and six interpretive signs that tell their story. Steel and stones now surround the barren earth to protect and preserve the area where the men bravely made their last stand. A quiet path and benches offer a space to reflect.

Locally grown produce is available through April at more than 20 farmers’ markets across the Valley, including markets in Glendale, Goodyear and Peoria. Find naturally or organically grown potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, heirloom beets, baby greens, squash, dates, oranges and lots of other produce.

Fresh produce is a big draw, but shoppers can also meet the farmer, buy line-caught salmon from Alaska, fresh-baked bread, taste cheese or salsa, and enjoy a glass of wine or homemade root beer.

Every market is different, and all change from week to week depending on what’s ripe for harvest and which vendors set up shop.

Agri-tourism - From Field to ForkAs Arizona’s commercial farms disappear, family farmers are turning to “agri-tourism” to preserve their legacies. This allows city slickers an opportunity to go back to nature, create memories, pick their own fruits and veggies, visit farm animals, enjoy an agricultural festival, eat fresh, organically-grown food, watch entertainment and more.

Arizona Grown is a program offered by the Arizona Department of Agriculture that showcases Arizona food and agricultural products. The goal of this program is to make it easier for consumers, retailers and restaurants to identify and purchase Arizona products.

We all want a healthy smile and teeth that function properly.

By taking preventative steps to care for your teeth, you can not only maintain a beautiful smile but prevent and lessen the time and expense of correcting and treating dental disease. The Arizona Dental Association recommends regular dental checkups and a consistent brushing and flossing regimen to remove plaque and harmful bacteria so that you can keep your mouth healthy.

“The best dental plan is prevention!” according to Dr. W. Brian Powley, President, Arizona Dental Association. “The vast majority of dental problems are avoidable. For most patients, having regular professional exams, x-rays and cleanings costs approximately $1 per day. Combined with a commitment to doing your ‘homework,’ which means brushing, flossing, and watching what goes into your mouth, you can minimize your out-of-pocket dental expenses. Avoiding professional dental care due to lack of dental insurance is nonsensical.”

Schedule routine dental visitsA visit to a dentist’s office is an investment in you. These twice yearly recommended visits are important to evaluate overall periodontal health (the foundation of bone and gum tissue that support your teeth) professionally remove plaque and calculus, as well as checking for any signs of tooth decay, cracked teeth or restorations, and oral cancer. A visit to the dentist is also an opportunity to ask questions and discuss any pain, problems or other concerns.

While the recommended number of annual visits to the dentist may vary per individual, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stress that it is important for adults to see the dentist on a regular basis to care for and maintain the overall health of the teeth and mouth. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the most frequent causes of tooth loss.

People with a higher risk of dental and oral diseases, such as patients who have had periodontal treatment, smokers, pregnant women, diabetics and those with weakened immune systems, may need to see the dentist more frequently. Oral health is inseparable from overall health and well-being.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children go to the dentist by age one or within six months after the first tooth erupts.

Arizona Dental Association dentists also suggest eating a healthy, balanced diet and eliminating sugary food and drinks, such as soda and hard candy, because sugars bind with the bacteria in the mouth to create acids that cause decay. Parents should also be aware that children should not be put to bed with bottles filled with juice or milk. This can lead to

devastating rampant decay and infection known as “baby bottle caries.”

Parents may also not be aware that bacteria can easily transmit from parent to a child. Never clean off a pacifier that has fallen to the ground by placing it in your own mouth, and avoid sharing eating utensils. Baby teeth are important to your child’s development. Although they will eventually fall out, they serve an important role to maintaining the space for the development of permanent teeth.

Most children should also get routine applications of topical fluoride to protect the teeth from breakdown from the acids that cause tooth decay. Sealants are also recommended for teeth that develop with deep pits and grooves that toothbrush bristles cannot reach effectively to help prevent cavities.

Children with untreated tooth decay can experience pain and develop infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning, according to the CDC. In fact, toothaches are the leading reason for school absences.

Practice good oral hygieneTo prevent oral health disease, the Arizona Dental Association recommends people use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush their teeth twice a day with toothpaste containing fluoride to help strengthen teeth. In 2012, approximately 58 percent of Arizona’s population on community water systems received

fluoridated water, which keeps teeth strong, reduces cavities and prevents tooth decay.

Flossing daily helps remove food particles that a toothbrush cannot reach and eliminates bacteria.

The CDC recommends people should avoid tobacco in any form, which increases the risk for periodontal disease, oral and throat cancers,

and oral fungal infections. More than one-third of all cancer patients also develop complications that affect the mouth, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Therefore, it is important that cancer patients are engaged with their dentist when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

“Regardless of your dental history, it’s never too late to visit a dentist for an examination and development of a treatment plan to address your individual needs and desires,” Powley said. “Remember, they are your teeth, and a dentist can offer multiple options to achieve the results you want to achieve.”

“Don’t be fearful or ashamed,” Powley said. “A dentist can help you get your smile back so that you can be healthy, function properly and feel confident about your smile.”

As the new President and CEO of Benevilla, one of the first things people ask me is “Where do you see Benevilla in the next five, ten or even twenty years?” As the aging population changes, the Baby Boomers will definitely impact the way we view aging, there will be a lot of changes ahead and Benevilla will continue to lead the way in innovative aging.

Being with Benevilla for nearly ten years now, I have seen firsthand the impact we have on the community. As the new President and CEO of Benevilla, it is my responsibility to listen to the communities we serve and provide the best services possible. We will strive to help our community members age in place gracefully and we will support them in having productive, fun and engaging lives no matter their age.

Benevilla has cutting edge programs for those who have dementia and the need for those programs is increasing already. The Alzheimer’s Association is predicting that by the year 2025 Arizona will have 200,000 residents with a diagnosis of dementia. This is an increase of over 50% in just 8 years! Benevilla has highly acclaimed dementia programs that are accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), the only ones to be accredited in the Valley. These programs will need to be expanded to help meet this growing need. With the continued support of the community I believe we can make this happen.

Another important service Benevilla provides is our Home Services. This free program

matches volunteers with homebound seniors in the community. The volunteer will do grocery shopping for those who are unable; provide assisted transportation to vital appointments, friendly visits, and much more.

Currently we have over 150 volunteers that help with that program on a yearly basis. In the next

25 years the need for this free service is going to grow and Benevilla will need the support of the community, in terms of donors, organizations who support us, and volunteers to ensure that this free community support is available for all who want and need it.

Finally, I would like to invite all of you to Benevilla for a tour, or even out to Birt’s Bistro, our on-

site restaurant whose sales go back into our programs. They have wonderful food! It’s good for the people of this community to know that Benevilla is here for them.

In addition to our four life enriching day programs, we have many support groups for Caregivers, a pre-school, even a Community Garden. There are so many ways to get involved at Benevilla. It’s truly a wonderful organization to be a part of.

As the new President and CEO at Benevilla, I see opportunities for new ideas and programming as the population changes. I see potential for growth and further community involvement. We hope you will consider joining us for the next chapter in this community organization.

Meet Benevilla’s New President & CEO: Joanne Thomson

Northwest Valley Connect = Transportation made simple Northwest Valley Connect (NVC) provides the “Gift of Mobility” to homebound seniors and those with limiting disabilities, people who are well enough to still live at home but who no longer can drive. Seniors need transportation, not only to doctors and dentist appointments, but to shopping and social activities as well. The process is quite simple: the senior completes an application form is logged into the NVC data bank. This then allows the operators of the NVC Call Center to “connect” the applicants with the appropriate transportation provider. In cases where a “connection” with an existing provider cannot be made, NVC has its own volunteer drivers to handle the trips. The Call Center number is: 623-282-9300.NVC needs additional Call Center volunteers and many more volunteer drivers. (Adequate umbrella insurance is in place to cover the drivers.) Those interested in helping should call NVC’s

Executive Director/Mobility Manager Kathy Chandler at 623-282-9304. Public transportation is very limited in the Northwest Valley, triggering this tremendous response to NVC and its relatively new presence in the community.

In addition to individual trips, NVC provides weekly Group Trips to various shopping and entertainment locations throughout the Valley utilizing its vans, one of which is a specialized wheelchair-accessible vehicle. On order

is a new 12-person van that will be able to better accommodate the many people who want to be included in this popular service.Northwest Valley Connect has received its designated status as a “qualifying charitable organization” for Arizona tax-credit donations which is a most attractive benefit to its growing donor population. Many have increased their annual giving to the tax-credit limitations of $400.00 for individuals and $800.00 for couples.

Do you know what pickleball is?

There are currently an estimated two million pickleball players with an astonishing eight million expected by 2018. If you haven’t caught this sports addiction, there is still time for you! Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels that is played both indoors and outdoors. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. 68% of USAPA members are over 60 years old, yet this sport is not just for the seniors anymore. The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was organized to promote the growth and development of pickleball on both a national and international level and is headquartered in Surprise, AZ.

According to USAPA, an average of 76 US venues are created each month; this growth is exciting. More and more we’re hearing that it’s not only players, but cities, communities and schools that are jumping on the pickleball bandwagon. It makes good sense as the game is not only great for people’s health, but it’s good for local economies. There are hundreds of pickleball clubs throughout Arizona – so if you’re not finding out where to have fun in your area, you are missing a great opportunity to get exercise, meet people and have fun.

As we know Arizona prides itself on being a world-class vacation destination. Demand for pickleball courts has become so intense that

RV parks and resorts that don’t have pickleball

courts are losing snowbird business to parks

that do.

Fun Arizona Pickleball Facts:

• Arizona Senior Olympics included

pickleball in 2001 at Happy Trails

Resort in Surprise.

• In 2009, the first USAPA Nationals

was held at Sun City Festival in

Buckeye.

• Phoenix metro’s West Valley has the most

concentrated number of players at all skill

levels in the state.

• As of August 2016, there were 177 places to

play pickleball in Arizona – so many options!

To find a location near you go to usapa.org/
