Some descriptions Active learning spaces are classrooms with fixed desks or
tables accommodating usually between six to nine students, with each table having a dedicated display and whiteboard.
Flexible learning spaces are also meant to foster a more
collaborative and active learning style, but the focus is on flexibility and allowing the instructor and students to rearrange the classroom depending on the goals and activities for each session.
Learning commons are spaces (also sometimes known as
"information commons") that are most frequently found in libraries Focus in this presentation on active and flexibel learning spaces

Different starting point
A specific location becomes available (a basement, a room)
Step by step process
Renovation of old buildings
Global Outlook on Learning Spaces Design Veugelers NGLS17 28032017 19
Creating a new building on the campus
Common theme: Challenges Educational Vision is changing to more Blended learning Active learning Teambased learning Projectbased learning New way of learning -> innovation -> new spaces

IT / AV innovations are already there: Flexible screens Bring you own device Swipe to the screen New digital learning environment (more collaboration possibilities) Video clips, weblectures
Coming up next year(s):
Virtual and Augmented Reality Learning Analytics
Flexible furniture Furniture that stimulate collaboration
Why is it difficult

What can we learn from each other
The Balance model should be in balance

My impressions
You can start with small pilots but be aware to support the teachers in changing their educational program and support the students as well
Creating each year only a few learning spaces is a process
that is too slow nowdays Be creative with the costs
The most expensive part are not always necessary

A proven road to success • A clear vision of Learning and of Campus Development
• Total innovative concept rollout for a whole building
• Multi-year planning program for a whole campus
• The Executive Board is in the lead
• All services/units of the university are working very
closetogether, with common understandig, based on the vision. No silos between University Services
• Very broadly anchored in education Top-down but also bottom-up Teachers and Students are involved

• A support group for teachers (Learning Design Teams in each department)
• A website about new learning concepts and information about new learning spaces (type and possibilities, lessons learned, examples of colleagues)
• A change in the rostering program
• Regularly evaluation and research
• Connecting with data (learning analytics) • Obtain additional financing for new concepts
