WILDCATS HOLD ON FOR 31-24 WIN AT SACRAMENTO STATE Weber State jumped out to a big lead, then held on for a 31-24 win at Sacramento State last Saturday to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Wildcats scored three early touchdowns, then added two-point conversions on each score and led 24-0 early in the second quarter. Sacramento State scored the next three touchdowns to make it 24-21 but the Wildcats scored again and held off the Hornets for the win in the final non-conference game of the year. Weber State totaled 21 first downs, compared to nine for the Hornets and had 279 yards of total offense.

STEFAN CANTWELL WITH TWO TOUCHDOWNS IN WIN Weber State senior quarterback Stefan Cantwell accounted for two touchdowns in WSU’s win at Sacramento State. He thew a 12-yard touchdown pass to Drew Batchelor in the second quarter and convert-ed on a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to extend Weber State’s lead. He finished the day with 109 yards passing and 56 yards rushing.

After three games, the South Jordan, Utah, native ranks fourth in the Big Sky in total offense at 277 yards per game and is sixth in passing yards per game. He is also second in scoring touchdowns in the conference.

TWO TOUCHDOWNS AND A CAREER MILESTONE FOR DREW BATCHELOR Weber State senior wide receiver Drew Batchelor had a big game in Saturday’s win. He recorded two touchdown receptions and reached a career milestone. Batchelor caught a 3-yard touchdown from Andrew Vollert for WSU’s first touchdown, then had a 12-yard TD from Stefan Cantwell for Weber State’s third score early in the second quarter. It was the first time in his career he has had two touchdowns in the same game. Batchelor also reached a milestone as he passed 1,000 receiving yards in his career. The St. George, Utah, native has played in 35 career games at Weber State and now has 99 career catches for 1,049 yards. He needs just one more reception to become the 25th player in Weber State history with 100 career receptions.

BLOCKED PUNT TOUCHDOWN FOR JONAH WILLIAMS WSU sophomore Jonah Williams scored his first touchdown of his career Saturday as he blocked a Sacramento State punt attempt in he first quarter, then recovered the ball in the end zone for the touchdown. It was the second blocked kick of his career. It was also the first blocked punt returned for a touchdown by a Weber State player since Brady Fosmark blocked a punt which Rodregis Smith returned for a touchdown

against Eastern Washington in 2002.

WILDCATS IN NATIONAL POLLS After a win Saturday, Weber State has moved up in the national polls. The Wildcats are now 18th in the country in the FCS Coaches poll and 23rd in the STATS media poll.

HOMECOMING GAME SATURDAY AT 5:00 After two weeks on the road, Weber State returns home to open Big Sky play as the Wildcats host UC Davis for Homecoming Saturday at 5 p.m., at Stewart Stadium. Fans can get five tickets to the game for just $25 or can get five tickets, five drinks and five hot dogs for just $50.

HOMECOMING GAMES Weber State is 25-30 all-time in Homecoming games as a Division I school. The Wildcats have won the last two Homecoming games, beating Sacramento State in 2015 and Portland State in 2016. The Wildcats beat UC Davis for the Homecoming game in 2010.

BIG SKY OPENERS Weber State is 24-30 all-time in Big Sky Conference openers and have won the last two conference openers. WSU beat Northern Colorado in 2015 and UC Davis in 2016 in the first game of Big Sky play. This is the first time the Wildcats have opened Big Sky play at home since 2013.

WILDCATS THIRD IN THE NATION IN 3RD DOWN CONVERSIONS After three games Weber State is ranked third in the nation in third down conver-sions. The Wildcats have converted on 59.2 percent of their third down attempts this season, best in the Big Sky and third nationally.

WEBER STATE FOOTBALL HISTORY Weber State began playing Division I football in 1962 and one year later, became a charter member of the Big Sky Conference. WSU has captured three Big Sky titles and advanced to the FCS Playoffs five times in school history, including last year. Weber State’s list of legendary head coaches includes Sark Arsla-nian, Mike Price, Dave Arslanian and Ron McBride. The ‘Cats have had 51 players earn All-American honors and have had 37 players drafted in the NFL. Former WSU quarterback Jamie Martin won the 1991 Walter Payton Trophy and then had a long career in the NFL. Several other Wildcats have also played in the NFL, including Paul McQuistan who won a Super Bowl ring in 2015 with the Seattle Seahawks.

NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS Weber State is sixth nationally in time of possession at 36:02 per game. WSU is also 10th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 42.3 points per game, also best in the conference. The Wildcats lead the conference and are 14th in the nation in total defense at 266 yards per game. The ‘Cats are also 11th nationally in punt return av-erage (15.7), 12th in fewest penalties per game (4.0), 13th in passing yards allowed (151.3) and 15th in red zone defense at 66.7 percent.

MCKAY MURPHY LEADING BIG SKY IN TACKLES FOR LOSS Weber State senior defensive tackle McKay Murphy leads the Big Sky in tackles for loss. The Alpine, Uta, native had 1.5 tackles for loss in the win Saturday at Sacramento State and now has 6.0 tackles for loss on the yea, the most in the Big Sky. His averaged of 2.0 per game ranks 14th in the nation.

COACHING STAFF Jay Hill returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Wildcats. He has led WSU to a 17-21 overall record and a 13-11 record in Big Sky play. Hill also serves as de-fensive coordinator for the Wildcats this season. Fesi Sitake is in his fourth year at Weber State and his second season as offensive coordinator for the Wildcats. Associate head coach Brent Myers returns for his fourth season at Weber State. Also returning are assistant coaches Kite Afeaki (defensive line), Kelly Bills (wide receivers), Quinton Ganther (running backs), Preston Hadley (secondary) and Colton Swan (special teams, outside linebackers). New assistant coaches this year are Grant Duff (inside linebackers) and former Wildcat All-American Al Pupunu (tight ends). Ryan Milus (cornerbacks) and Skyler Ridley (offense) are graduate assistants and Derrick Luken is the Director of Football Operations.

WEBER STATE PICKED FIFTH IN BIG SKY PRESEASON POLLS This year Weber State was selected to finish fifth in the Big Sky preseason media and coaches polls. North Dakota was picked to finish first in both polls, followed by Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona and Cal Poly. The Wildcats were fifth with Montana sixth and Southern Utah seventh.

TEAM CAPTAINS Coach Hill has named five captains for the Wildcats for this season, two on of-fense and three on defense. The two offensive captains are senior quarterback Ste-fan Cantwell and senior tight end Andrew Vollert. The three defensive captains are senior cornerback Taron Johnson, senior defensive tackle McKay Murphy and junior linebacker LeGrand Toia.

AROUND THE BIG SKY Big Sky Conference play begins this week with six games on the conference slate. The Wildcats are one of five teams to finish the non-conference season 2-1, tying Idaho State, Montana, Southern Utah and UC Davis. This week three Big Sky teams are nationally ranked with Eastern Washington 11th, North Dakota 17th and 19th in the two polls and Weber State 18th and 23rd in the polls. Southern Utah and Montana are just outside the top 25.

EXTRA POINTS Weber State is looking to start the season 3-1, which the ‘Cats haven’t done since 2008...WSU All-America senior tight end Andrew Vollert reached 1,000 career receiv-ing yards in his 15th career game. He now has 77 career catches for 1,000 yards...Junior running back Treshawn Garrett had his best game of the season, totaling 99 yards. He also moved up to 25th in WSU history in career rushing yards...Senior Xequille Harry is 11th in the nation in punt returns, averaging 15.7 yards per return.

LOOKING AHEAD After Saturday’s game, the Wildcats will be back on the road as Weber State trav-els to Montana State on Sept. 30. That game will be televised regionally on ROOT Sports at 1:30 p.m. in Bozeman. The ‘Cats will then have a bye week before returning home to host Southern Utah on Oct. 14.

ABOUT UC DAVIS UC Davis is 2-1 on the season entering Big Sky play Saturday. The Aggies opened the season with a 38-17 loss at San Diego State but have since won two-straight games. They beat San Diego 35-7, then won 37-14 at Portland State Saturday in a non-conference game. So far this season UC Davis leads the Big Sky and ranks seventh in the country in passing offense, averaging 314.3 yards in the air per game. The Aggies are sixth nationally in pass efficiency at 176.2 and rank 15th in the country and second in the Big Sky in third down conversions at 50 percent. They are also second in the conference in scoring defense, giving up

19.7 points per game and rank third in total offense. Individually, sophomore quarterback Jake Maier leads the Big Sky in total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns and pass efficiency, and ranks in the top eight in the country in each category. He is fourth nationally in passing yards per game at 314.3 and eighth in total offense at 326.7. Junior receiver Keelan Doss is first in the conference and third in the country in receiving yards per game at 115.7. Defensively, junior Vincent White leads the conference in passes defended with five. Junior Ryan Parenteau was named Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking two punts in last week’s win. UC Davis is coming off a 3-8 record in 2016 and finished tied for ninth in the Big Sky at 2-6. The Aggies return 13 starters off last year’s team and were picked to finish 11th this season in the Big Sky preseason polls. HEAD COACH DAN HAWKINS The Aggies are coached by legendary head coach Dan Hawkins who is in his first season at UC Davis, his alma mater. Hawkins was named head coach at UC Davis in November 2016 after working as an ESPN analyst the last few years. Hawkins was previously head coach at Boise State (2001-05) and Colorado (2006-10) and began his career as head coach at Willamette from 1993-97. He posted a record of 53-11 at Boise State, including a 37-3 record in WAC play. In his 16-year college career he has a career record of 114-62. He played fullback at UC Davis and graduated in 1985.

SERIES HISTORY This will be the sixth all-time meeting between Weber State and UC Davis with the Wildcats holding a 3-2 series lead. WSU has won the last two games, including a wild 38-35 win in Davis last season in which the Wildcats led 32-10 in the third quarter before a UC Davis comeback. The Aggies tied the game late before a field goal at the buzzer won the game for Weber State. In games in Ogden, Weber State is 2-1 all-time. The Aggies won in 2004 at Stewart Stadium but Weber State won games in 2010 and 2015.

Jay Hill is in his fourth season as the head coach at Weber State. In 2016, he led the Wildcats to a winning record, a third-place finish in the Big Sky, and a trip to the FCS Playoffs.

Hill was named the 11th head coach in Weber State football history in December 2013. In four seasons at WSU, he has a career record of 16-20 overall and is 13-11 in Big Sky Conference games. He has coached 34 players to Big Sky All-Conference honors and two players have earned All-American honors.

In 2016, Hill guided Weber State to a 7-5 record. The Wildcats finished 6-2 in Big Sky Confer-ence play, finishing third in the conference standings, Weber State’s highest finish since 2009. Weber State also qualified for the FCS Playoffs for the first time since 2009. The Wildcats were also ranked nationally during the season for the first time in six years.

Weber State’s defense led the Big Sky in passing defense. During the season the ‘Cats won five-straight games, including a dramatic comeback with at Southern Utah, where the Wildcats rallied for a 22-point deficit in the final eight minutes of the game. Weber State also posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in six years. The Wildcats had 13 players earn Big Sky All-Conference honors, including Andrew Vollert and Tre’von Johnson and the first team. Vollert was also named an All-American at Weber State.

In 2015, Hill guided the Wildcats to a 6-5 overall record and a 5-3 record in Big Sky play. It was Weber State’s first winning season in five years and in-cluded several key victories. The Wildcats picked up a 24-21 overtime in at Montana, their first win in Missoula since 1987. Weber State also finished the year 4-1 at home with wins over Sacramento State, North Da-kota, UC Davis and Idaho State. WSU had 10 players earn Big Sky All-Conference honors and Joe Hawkins earned All-American honors. Weber State also led the Big Sky in total defense.

He spent 13 years (2001-13) as an assisntat coach at the University of Utah, including the last nine sea-sons as a full-time assistant under Kyle Whittingham. Prior to that, he spent four years as a graduate assis-tant and administrative assistant with the Utes under legendary coaches Ron McBride and Urban Meyer.

The Lehi, Utah native played college football at Ricks Junior College, where he earned junior college All-American honors at cornerback. He went on to play two seasons (1998-99) at Utah under Ron McBride. As a senior he led the Mountain West in interceptions, was named Utah’s Defensive MVP and earned second team All-Conference honors. He later played briefly in the XFL and signed free agent contracts with the Buf-falo Bills and New York Giants.

He and his wife Sara have four children: Ashtyn, Alayna, Jacob and Allie.
