u STRONG SENIOR SEASON FOR BATESAfter battling injuries throughout her career, senior outside hitter
Cadie Bates has been a key contributor to the 2017 Blue Devils,
playing all six rotations. Through 27 matches, Bates leads the team
with 314 kills, more than double than her previous career high (149)
set in 2015. She totaled a career-best 20 kills in the season opener
at Colorado State and is the only Blue Devil to reach 20 kills in a
match this season. Bates has also been solid on defense and leads
the Blue Devils with 14 double-doubles. She trails only libero Nicole
Elattrache in total digs and digs per set this season while also
leading Duke with 22 service aces.
u SCHWANTZ’ IMMEDIATE IMPACTFreshman outside hitter Payton Schwantz has enjoyed a tremen-
dous start to her collegiate career. The rookie from Frisco, Texas is
second on the team in total kills (303) and kills per set (2.91) while
hitting .230 on the year. Schwantz has recorded double-digit kills
in 19 of Duke’s 27 matches this season, including seven straight
from Sept. 2-22. She was named ACC Freshman of the Week
Sept. 11 after leading the Blue Devils to an undefeated weekend
at the Fight in the Fort at TCU tournament and also earned all-
tournament team honors for her efforts. Schwantz also picked up
2017 Duke Invitational All-Tournament accolades at the conclusion
of the Blue Devils’ annual tournament.
u ELATTRACHE REACHES 1,000 CAREER DIGSSenior Nicole Elattrache became the 23rd player in program histo-
ry to reach 1,000 career digs Friday, Oct. 20 at Virginia. Elattrache
entered the program as a setter and played three seasons as a
defensive specialist before taking over as Duke’s starting libero her
senior year. She currently leads the team with 443 digs and ranks
third in the ACC with a 4.22 digs-per-set average. She earned Fight
in the Fort at TCU tournament MVP honors after totaling a career-
high 29 digs in Duke’s win over Lehigh. For her career, Elattrache
owns 1,130 digs to rank 17th in program history.

u DUKE HITTERSIn addition to outside hitters Cadie Bates and Payton Schwantz,
Duke has received solid efforts from its rightside hitters. Sopho-
more Samantha Amos -- a 2016 All-ACC Freshman Team pick
-- has accrued 222 kills on .244 hitting. Amos has eight matches of
10-plus kills to her credit this season, including a career-high 18-kill
performance Oct. 22 at Virginia Tech. Sophomore Natalie Schil-
ling was also a key contributor on the rightside before suffering
a season-ending injury. Junior Jessi Bartholomew has filled that
spot, recording eight-straight matches of 10 or more kills from Oct.
15 - Nov. 8.
u BALANCED OFFENSESetters Emma Paradiso and Sarah Nelson have run Duke’s 6-2
system this season. Those two have helped Duke rank fourth in the
ACC in assists per set (12.76) and fifth in kills per set (13.49). Duke
is the only school to rank in the top five in the ACC in kills per set
without an individual hitter in the league’s top 10 in kills.
u MIDDLE BLOCKERSWith Leah Meyer out due to injury, middle blockers Anna Kropf
and Summer Brown have set the tone at the net for Duke. As a
senior, Kropf is enjoying a career year, totaling career bests in
kills (187) and blocks (105). She leads the team with a 1.01 blocks
per set average as well and has recorded four or more blocks in
14 matches this season. Brown has put down 96 kills for the Blue
Devils and topped four blocks nine times this season.
u NAGEL REACHES 600 WINSHead coach Jolene Nagel earned her 600th career victory in
Duke’s straight-set victory over TCU Sept. 9 in Fort Worth, Texas.
With the victory, Nagel became the 22nd active NCAA Division I
head coach to reach 600 career wins and joined Florida State’s
Chris Poole and North Carolina’s Joe Sagula as the only three ACC
coaches to reach the milestone. For her coaching career, Nagel
owns a 611-344 record with stints at Cornell, Georgetown and Duke.
In her 19th season with the Blue Devils, Nagel owns a 408-204
record at Duke including a 246-106 mark in the ACC.
u MEYER NAMED PRESEASON ALL-ACCJunior middle blocker Leah Meyer earned 2017 Preseason All-ACC
recognition after leading the 2016 Blue Devils with 139 blocks and
ranking second on the team with 316 kills. Meyer garnered AVCA
All-East Coast Region and First Team All-ACC accolades for her
sophomore season performance. Meyer ranked sixth in the ACC
and 35th nationally with a 1.31 blocks-per-set average. Her 139
total blocks were also the most by a Blue Devil since Chelsea Cook
in 2012. She posted at least four blocks in 18 matches, including
her first career double-double Sept. 24 at Virginia. Meyer totaled
12 kills and 11 blocks at UVA to record the first double-double for
a Duke middle blocker since Christian Gray in 2012. On offense,
Meyer ranked second on the team in kills and ranked eighth in the
ACC in hitting percentage.
