• discover innovation • highlight their innovation needs • explain how they can be a great partner

Also, TC3 offers attendees multiple tools for pre-arranged, sit-down, one-on-one meetings with carriers and Tier 1 vendors.

The TC3 Summit is “Upside Down” • The normal order of business, everywhere, year-round, is that small companies pitch down the value chain into bigger companies who have a larger purse. The Telecom Council also does this year-round in Silicon Valley.

• But the world is changing. Carriers need innovation as much as startups need sales. And they can’t invent it all themselves, so they should also court the innovators, and at least once a year, do so clearly and directly.

• So, TC3 flips the usual pitch-down, and asks the world’s biggest, and most forward-thinking network operators to pitch-up to the entrepreneurs and vendors of the world, and say “This is why you should work with us in 2017.”

TC3 Summit: Why It’s Unique

Why These Slides Are Free We’re not modest about this. We think our TC3 Summit is incredibly valuable to attendees, and they consistently agree. And we think these aggregated slides from our Summit are also very valuable. We think it’s a service to the carriers and to the entrepreneurs worldwide to distribute these slides freely, and as widely as possible. The next best carrier partnership deal may well grow out of our TC3 Summit, but it also may come from some team of entrepreneurs, far removed from Silicon Valley, coding away in some garage, who were somehow inspired or guided by these slides. We’d be honored to play a small role in that. There’s far more value in attending the TC3 Summit than just these slides, but this info should be available to entrepreneurs worldwide, not just those lucky enough to attend our annual TC3 Summit. Use this well, and we wish you “makers” good fortune and dealmaking in 2017.

But we didn’t create the valuable content in the slides – the network operators themselves did. They offered it to us and our TC3 audience because they are wisely choosing to tell entrepreneurs exactly what they need, and how to work with them.

How To Use These Slides At the TC3 Summit, we require that network operators who speak on stage include at least these two very specific slides:

1. A clear list of the carriers’ technology gaps or needs from partners 2. Methods for engaging with the carrier (addresses, sites, incubators, etc.)*

(*This second slide has lots of personal contact information, which we cannot publish to the web, and is not in this deck.)

In isolation, each slide only offers a snapshot of a single player in the ecosystem, but collectively, this document highlights major trends. Consider them: Individually the #1 slides are very powerful as they give us a window into each carrier, and their specific technology gaps. You should look at what is mentioned, but also what is not. The Telecom Council suggests readers look deeper at individual slides and consider clarity of vision and clarity of message. In aggregate, the 24 operator slides reveal the major trends, spending shifts, and entrepreneurial opportunities across the communications industry in 2017. Once again, what isn’t mentioned is often as important as what is. VCs and entrepreneurs should look for the most frequently mentioned topics and pivot towards them.
