He is a chess grandmaster and seven-time World Chess Champion. He is considered one of the greatest players in chess history, especially in tournament play. He is the most successful tournament player in history with over 140 first- places to his credit. Karpov learned to play chess at the age of 4, and at age 12 he was accepted into former World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik's prestigious chess school. He became the youngest Soviet National Master in history, at 15, when he won his first international chess tournament several months later. In 1973 he qualified for the 1974 Candidates cycle that would determine who was allowed to challenge the reigning World Champion Bobby Fischer. Karpov ultimately won the right to challenge Fischer for the world title, but the match never came about. They could not agree on the rules for the championship, so Fischer withdrew and forfeited his crown to Karpov. Since then, Karpov has created the most phenomenal streak of tournament wins against the strongest players in the world. He has founded 15 chess schools throughout the world, including the first one in the U.S. in Lindsborg, Kansas. ABOUT THE CAMPS

Sunday, July 16, 2017 4:30-5:30pm Check-in at Karpov Chess School, 106 S. Main Street, Lindsborg, Kansas 67456. Check in time 4:30-5:30 p.m. Telephone: 785-227-7555

After checking-in and orientation on Sunday evening, the chess camp will begin with a simultaneous game with Grandmaster Timur Gareyev. On Monday through Friday, campers will have tournaments, game analysis, and instructive sessions. The students will be divided into groups of 8-12 members and assigned a supervising instructor who will be responsible for tracking their progress throughout the camp. A rotating instructional schedule allows campers to study with several members of the staff during the week.

Each camper will receive a thorough mix of chess instruction, tournament games, and leisure time activities while attending camp.

Each day, participants will play one round of a G/45 tournament. Friday afternoon will be devoted to the award ceremony.

Prizes for winners in the regular tournament, bughouse tournament, blitz tournament, and problem/puzzle solving competitions will be awarded. Each day 90 minutes will be devoted to supervised free time, soccer and/or swimming

pool activities. Free time may also include basketball and tennis. Students will be supervised by experienced counseling staff throughout the week

Beginnings

Grandmaster Timur Gareyev was born March 3, 1988, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He became International Grandmaster at the age of 16. Grandmaster Gareyev is best known for his uncanny ability to play multiple chess games blindfolded. Timur is working to set a new Guinness World Record for Blindfold Chess in 2017.

Education

Timur received a full scholarship and graduated from the University of Texas at Brownsville with a B.A. degree in Business Marketing. While attending the University, he helped their chess team win the national collegiate title. Timur is one of the few top players in US to have received the Samford Fellowship 2012-2013.

In the unlikely event of illness or a conflict in scheduling, ICIM reserves the right to substitute chess instructors with instructors of equal stature. The Karpov Chess School (International Chess Institute of the Midwest) summer chess camp program is designed for chess players of all strengths and level of experience, ages 6 to adult, who want to improve their game while enjoying the company of fellow chess enthusiasts.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Registration: 4:30-5:30 pm, Sunday, July 21, 2017 at Karpov Chess School, 106 South Main, Lindsborg, Kansas. Supervision: Participants will be closely supervised both on and off the field by our trained staff of counselors and coaches (24-hour supervision in residence halls). Eligibility: K-12 students, College students, and adults.

Enrollment is limited, early registration is advisable.
