PROGRESSSIVE LEGENDS CLASSICYEAR-BY-YEAR CHAMPIONS Champion Runner-Up Score 2016 Notre Dame Northwestern 70-66 2015 Marquette Arizona State 78- 73 (OT) 2014 #12 Villanova #19 Michigan 60-55 2013 Pittsburgh Stanford 88-67 2012 #1 Indiana Georgetown 82-72 (OT) 2011 #20 Vanderbilt Oregon State 64-62 2010 #10 Syracuse Georgia Tech 80-76 2009 Florida Rutgers 73-58 2008 #4 Pittsburgh Washington State 57-43 2007 #16 Texas #7 Tennessee 97-78 PUNCH YOUR TICKET: Since the beginning of the Progressive Legends Classic in 2007, nine of the 10 champions have gone on to the NCAA Tournament. In 2007, Classic champion Texas reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament while runner-up Tennessee and West Virginia made it to the Sweet 16. In 2008, Pittsburgh won the tournament and, like Texas, reached the Elite Eight. In addition, Mississippi State and Akron each garnered NCAA bids while Washington State, which dropped the title game to the Panthers, made the NIT. In 2009, Michigan State won the consolation game and later advanced to the Final Four. Cornell, which won its Regional Round game as well as all three of its Subregional Round games, advanced to the Sweet 16 – the farthest it has ever gone in the NCAA Tournament. Legends Classic champion Florida earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament while Troy was accorded a berth in the NIT. In 2010, Syracuse used its championship to springboard to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, as did Michigan, which lost in the Legends consolation game. UTEP also reached the postseason by earning an NIT berth. In 2011, consolation game winner NC State advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, while champion Vanderbilt reached the NCAA third round and Texas earned an NCAA bid. Oregon State advanced to the semifinals of the CBI and Princeton advanced to the quarterfinals. Bucknell and Cleveland State both garnered 2012 NIT bids with Bucknell reaching the second round. In 2012, then-No. 1 Indiana took the crown and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. In all, eight teams in the 2012 event reached the postseason. Runner-up Georgetown, consolation game winner UCLA, and James Madison all earned NCAA bids, Southern Mississippi reached the quarterfinals of the NIT, North Dakota State earned a CBI bid, and UC Irvine and Youngstown State went to the CIT. In 2013, Pittsburgh won the championship and reached the NCAA Tournament’s third round. Stanford, which lost to Pitt, advanced to the Sweet 16. Texas Southern won the SWAC title and earned an automatic NCAA berth while South Dakota State played in the CBI. In 2014, tournament champion Villanova reached the NCAA’s third round, as did VCU and Oregon. In 2015, Marquette won the Legends Classic but did not earn a postseason bid. 2016 champion Notre Dame and runner-up Northwestern both reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament while Colordao (NIT) and Eastern Washington (CBI) also played in the postseason.

HELPFUL START: 43 teams that have participated in the Progressive Legends Classic have gone on to postseason play that year – 26 NCAA, 8 NIT, 5 CBI, and 4 CIT. Nine have advanced to the Sweet 16 (2007- Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia; 2008- Pittsburgh; 2009- Cornell, Michigan State; 2011- NC State; 2012- Indiana; 2013- Stanford) with Michigan State going all the way to the Final Four and Texas and Pitt reaching the Elite 8.

HOSTS WITH THE MOST: The 4 Regional Round hosts – Penn State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh – have combined for 75 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 8 Final Fours.

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND: 2017 marks the sixth year that the Progressive Legends Classic will be played east of the Hudson River as each of the previous five Classics were played in New Jersey. In 2007 and 2008, the Prudential Center in Newark served as the venue. In 2009 and 2010, it was Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. In 2011, the IZOD Center in the Meadowlands Sports Complex was the venue for the Championship Rounds. In 2012, the brand new Barclays Center served as host for the Championship Rounds for the first time.

WELCOME BACK, CHAMPS: Pittsburgh is the only team this season returning to the Progressive Legends Classic. The Panthers are a perfect 8-0 in Legends play, having won the championship in 2008 and 2013.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK: Only one student-athlete from the New York metropolitan area will participate in the Progressive Legends Classic games at Barclays Center. However, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton returns to the borough of his birth in his first season at the helm of the Cowboys.

PSU Taylor Nussbaum Fr.. South Salem, N.Y./Cheshire Acad. (CT) CATAPULTING INTO THE RANKINGS: Florida entered the 2009 Legends Classic unranked. However, dominant Regional Round wins over Troy and Georgia Southern preceded a stunning 77-74 win over No. 2 Michigan State and a 73-58 championship game victory versus Rutgers resulted in the Gators going from unranked to No. 13 in the nation two days after the Legends Classic concluded. In 2014, Villanova entered the Legends Classic ranked No. 12. After winning the tournament, the Wildcats continued their success before ending the season ranked No. 2 in the AP poll. In the short history of the event, two Progressive Legends Classic participants eventually reached No. 1 in the polls. In 2007, No. 7 Tennessee, which lost in the title game to No. 16 Texas, would move into the top spot the week of Feb. 25, 2008. In 2008, Legends champ and fourth-ranked Pittsburgh would eventually move to No. 1 for three weeks. Indiana, which played in the 2012 event, entered the Legends Classic ranked No. 1 and would stay there for 10 weeks.

THE MAN: He was the man but he wasn’t even named Tournament MVP in 2007. In leading Texas to the title, A.J. Abrams set eight Progressive Legends Classic records that still stand, including points in a tournament (103), points in the Championship Rounds (52), field goals in a tournament (39), and 3-point field goals in a tournament (23), nine of which came in a semifinal win against New Mexico State. That, too, is still a record. So who did receive MVP honors? Teammate D.J. Augustin.

SELECT COMPANY: In the last 10 NBA drafts, 51 players who have played in the Progressive Legends Classic have been selected, including six in the 2017 draft. Michigan’s D.J. Wilson (2014) was taken 17th by Milwaukee, Jarrett Allen (2016) of Texas was the 22nd pick by Brooklyn, Colorado’s Derrick White (2016) went 29th to San Antonio, Villanova’s Josh Hart (2014) was picked next by Utah, Jordan Bell (2014) of Oregon was Boston’s pick at 38, and his Ducks’ teammate, Dillon Brooks was taken 45th by Philadelphia. Speaking of the 76ers, LSU’s Ben Simmons went to Philadelphia with the top pick of the 2016 draft - the first Legends Classic alum to be the top draft choice.

THE UNTOUCHABLES: Of the 99 teams that have participated in the Progressive Legends Classic since 2007, nine remain undefeated in Classic play. Tournament champions Florida (2009), Syracuse (2010), Indiana (2012), Villanova (2014), and Notre Dame (2016) each went 4-0, as did Cornell in 2009 and Southern Mississippi in 2012. Texas, the 2007 champion, went 4-0 that year but went 2-2 in 2011. Penn State and Oklahoma State are 1-0 this year.

PROGRESSSIVE LEGENDS CLASSIC

Barry Davis - Texas A&M (1974-76)Barry Davis, considered among the greatest players in Texas A&M history, returned to his alma mater as director of student athlete development for men’s basketball in 2006. Davis, who has been a part of two Sweet 16 seasons as a staff member in Aggieland (1980 and 2007), was inducted into Texas A&M’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. He came back to A&M after 10 years as head coach at Grand Prairie (Texas) High School, where he had an impressive 179-124 record. Davis twice earned first-team All-Southwest Conference honors after helping the Aggies win consecutive conference titles in 1975 and 1976. The 1975 squad finished 20-7 - the first 20-win season in school history - and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The 1976 Aggies went 21-6 with Davis serving as team co-captain. Davis joined Shelby Metcalf’s staff as an assistant coach from 1977-82, helping the Aggies to a 24-9 record in 1978-79 and a school-record 26-8 mark in 1979-80. The 1978-79 team posted wins against Indiana, Kentucky and UNLV, while the 1979-80 team beat North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament before falling in overtime to eventual national champion Louisville. Davis was head coach at Western Texas College from 1982-84, earning region coach of the year honors after leading the team to a fifth-place finish in the national junior college tournament. From 1986-88, he served as an assistant coach at North Texas, helping the team to its first Southland Conference title and the first NCAA Tournament appearance in the school’s history.

Richard Fuqua - Oral Roberts (1969-73)Widely regarded as “The Man Who Built the Mabee Center,” Richard Fuqua was a three time All-American and the NCAA’s second-leading scorer in 1972. He is ORU’s all-time leading scorer at the Division I level and averaged better than 27 points per game for his four-year career. He is one of only three players in school history to lead the team in scoring four straight years. Fuqua scored 40 or more points in a game 16 times, 50 or more points seven times and 60 points once. He was ORU’s first All-American and is one of only three jerseys to be retired in school history. His son, R.J. Fuqua, is a freshman for the Golden Eagles this season.

LEGENDS OF THE GAME

Delvon Anderson - Montana (1990-92)Delvon Anderson played two seasons (1990-92) at Montana and his presence was immediately felt the moment he arrived. Montana won two Big Sky championships with Anderson, advancing to the NCAA tournament both years. Prior to that, it had been since the 1970s since Montana accomplished either of those achievements. As a senior in 1991-92, Anderson averaged 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and was named the league’s MVP. Anderson was also the recipient of the 1991 John Eaheart Award – given to UM’s top defensive player – and was a two-time winner of the Naseby Rhinehart Award – given to the team’s most inspirational player. A native of California, Anderson began his collegiate career at City College of San Francisco. Following his time in Missoula, he tried his hand professionally, both with the Golden State Warriors and overseas, and later on, went back to school to complete his undergraduate degree and obtain a master’s degree. “As I recruit today, tradition is what we sell,” DeCuire said. “That trend, those numbers, that tradition started with Delvon. He found for respect – his own respect, his teammates’ respect, the program’s respect. That’s who he was until the day he passed away, and to me, that’s what legends do.” Anderson passed away in August at the age of 49.

Sam Clancy - Pittsburgh (1977-81)Sam Clancy, one of the greatest athletes to come out of Pitt where he was a four-year starter, and averaged 14.4 pts per game and 11.6 rebounds per game from 1977-81. Clancy was a three-time Eastern 8 All-League selection and helped lead Pitt to four winning seasons, the 1981 Eastern 8 Tournament Championship, a NIT berth in 1980 and an NCAA bid in 1981. Clancy was also a member of the U.S. Gold Medal Team during the Pan American Games under coach Bobby Knight (1979) and is the only Pitt player to score over 1,000 points (1,671) and grab over 1,000 rebounds (1,362). He is also the only four-year starter in program history to average a double-double for a career. Clancy was named a first-team member of Pittsburgh Men’s Basketball All-Centennial Team and was also a 2015 Awardee of Distinction honoree. Clancy was drafted by the Phoenix Suns (NBA) in 1981 and the Seattle Seahawks (NFL) in 1982 and is one of a few athletes to be drafted by both sports even though he never played any collegiate football. He played one season of professional basketball in the Continental Basketball Association, averaging 11.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for the Billings Volcanos before playing 12-seasons of professional football. Clancy was a member of the Seahawks for two seasons before returning to Pittsburgh to play for the United States Football League Pittsburgh Maulers. After the Maulers folded following the 1984 season, Clancy went on to play for the Memphis Showboats of the USFL before returning to the NFL in the same year playing back-to-back seasons for the Showboats and Cleveland Browns. As a member of the Browns, Clancy made the playoffs each of his four seasons and played in two AFC Championship games against the Denver Broncos. Clancy then went on to play five more seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before retiring following the 1993 season. He concluded his career with 227 tackles, 30 sacks and seven fumble recoveries.

PROGRESSSIVE LEGENDS CLASSICBryant Reeves - Oklahoma State (1991-95)There isn’t a more iconic name in Oklahoma State basketball history than Bryant “Big Country” Reeves, who defined an era of Cowboy hoops in the early 1990s. A 2017 inductee into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, Reeves ranks among the most celebrated college basketball players of his era. The three-time All-American (1993-95) ranks second in Cowboy history in scoring (2,367 points) and rebounding (1,152), and his 58.8 career field goal percentage is the best in school history. Along with standout guard Randy Rutherford and head coach Eddie Sutton, Reeves helped lead OSU to the 1995 Final Four in Seattle. That season, he scored a school record 797 points (21.5 per game) and was named the Big Eight Most Valuable Player and the Big Eight Tournament MVP. The Vancouver Grizzlies selected Reeves with the sixth pick of the 1995 NBA Draft, and was an All-Rookie Second Team selection in 1996. He played six seasons with the organization, and averaged 12.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game over his career.

Brian Shaw - UCSB (1986-88)Brian Shaw transferred to UC Santa Barbara from St. Mary’s College. Even before he actually played for UCSB, it was clear that Shaw was going to be a difference-maker. He was a member of the 1986 USA Basketball Team that won the gold medal at the FIBA Championships in Spain. In 1985-86, his first season of action, he guided UCSB to a modest 16-13 record and a second-place finish in the Big West regular season standings. That year, he was named first-team All-Big West and second-team All-District. As a senior, Shaw averaged 13.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game to lead UCSB to its best season ever with a 22-8 record and a 14-4 mark in the Big West. He was named Big West Player of the Year after becoming the only player in league history to lead the conference in rebounds and assists. Following the season, Shaw was also named first-team All-Big West, first-team All-District and third-team All-American. That year, the Gauchos made the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team. It was the program’s first NCAA bid ever. During the magical 1987-88 season, Shaw had the only five triple-doubles in school history. In a game against seventh-ranked North Carolina State, he had 22 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists, and seven steals as UCSB posted a resounding 96-78 victory. In addition, he guided the Gauchos to a win over Gary Payton-led Oregon State and two wins over UNLV, which was ranked in the nation’s top-five each time. When UCSB won in Las Vegas, it snapped the Runnin’ Rebels 38-game home winning streak against conference opponents. When the Gauchos completed the sweep a few weeks later, they became the first team in league history to sweep UNLV. Following the season, Shaw was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics and he was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie Team in 1989. Ultimately, he played for seven teams, played on three NBA Championship teams as a member of the Lakers, and coached on Phil Jackson’s staff when the Lakers won titles in 2009 and 2010.

Dana Jones - Pepperdine (1990-94)Dana Jones enrolled at Pepperdine in the fall of 1990 and was in the starting lineup for his first game. He came off the bench the next four contests, but returned to the starting lineup after that and stayed there for the remaining 116 games of his collegiate career. The left-hander’s scoring progressively improved each season: 10.0 points per game as a freshman (leading to WCC Freshman of the Year honors) to 11.4 as a sophomore to 15.6 as a junior to 18.4 as a senior. He finished his career with 1,677 points, which at the time ranked second in Pepperdine history and is now third. Though just a 6-6 small forward, Jones is the only player in Waves’ history to pull down more than 1,000 career rebounds (1,031) and is the program’s all-time leader in steals (211). Jones was rewarded with WCC Player of the Year honors following a junior season where in addition to his scoring average of 15.6 he led the league with 9.1 rebounds and a 62.0% shooting percentage. He was part of Pepperdine teams that competed in the postseason all four years: the 1991, 1992 and 1994 NCAA Tournament and the 1993 NIT. He was part of three straight WCC regular-season titles between 1991-93 and three WCC Tournament crowns (1991, 1992 and 1994). Pepperdine went 88-35 during the four seasons.

Bruce Parkhill - Penn State (1984-95)Bruce Parkhill directed Penn State into a new era — the Big Ten Conference. His patience was rewarded between 1989-92 when his teams compiled an overall mark of 87-40 and advanced to postseason play each year. His third Big Ten team finished 21-11 in 1994-95. He began his coaching career in 1972 as a graduate assistant at Virginia after starring in three sports at Lock Haven University. At age 28, Parkhill was named head coach at William & Mary and in six seasons registered an 89-75 mark. The State College, Pa., native was appointed head coach at Penn State prior to the 1983-84 season. Building from the bottom, his Nittany Lion teams demonstrated steady progress, going 53-84 in his first five seasons and then improving to 20-12, 25-9, 21-11 and 21-8. In 1990, Parkhill was named Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year and the Lions went on to place third in the National Invitation Tournament. His 1991 club captured the Atlantic 10 championship and stunned UCLA in the NCAA Tournament. All 43 seniors who played for Parkhill at Penn State graduated. Parkhill amassed 181 wins in his 12-year career and ranks second all-time in Penn State history in coaching wins.

PROGRESSIVE LEGENDS CLASSICA BRIEF HISTORY2016 - Notre Dame led by as many as 12 points in the second half before fending off Northwestern, 70-66, to win the Legends Classic title. Tournament MVP Matt Farrell and Steve Vasturia scored 18 points apiece for the Irish. In the consolation match, Derrick White scored 16 points as Colorado handed No. 22 Texas its second loss in Brooklyn, 68-54.

2015 - It was billed as a battle of the top freshmen in the country as LSU’s Ben Simmons and Marquette’s Henry Ellenson led their teams into Brooklyn. When it was over, Ellenson emerged as the tournament’s MVP and Marquette emerged as the tournament’s champion. In the semifinal, Marquette and Ellenson won the head-to-head battle with an 81-80 win over No. 22 LSU. Trailing 80-79, Simmons, who had 21 points, 20 rebounds, and seven assists, hit a layup with 21 second to play before Jajuan Johnson sank a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles the win. In the final against Arizona State, Ellenson scored 14 points in the second half and overtime to lead the Golden Eagles to a 78-73 victory.

2014 - Dylan Ennis scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from three, to lead No. 12 Villanova to a 60-55 win over No. 19 Michigan in the Legends Classic championship game. The night before it looked like the Wildcats might not play for the title as No. 14 VCU exploded out of halftime, going on a 6-0 run to take a 36-32 lead over the reeling Wildcats. However, Villanova regrouped after a timeout and blew out the Rams by scoring 30 of the next 37 points in less than eight minutes and emerged with a 77-53 win. VCU downed Oregon in the consolation match, 77-63.

2013 - Pitt’s Lamar Patterson enjoyed playing in Brooklyn as he posted career highs in consecutive games to lead the Panthers to the Legends Classic championship. In the 76-63 semifinal win versus Texas Tech, Patterson scored 23 points. In the 88-67 win over Stanford for the title, Patterson went for 24 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field (3-of-6 from three) and 9-of-11 from the line. He also handed out six assists in earning tournament MVP honors.

2012 – The tournament moved from New Jersey to New York and the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The venue proved the perfect setting as No. 1 Indiana needed overtime to defeat Georgetown, 82-72, in the championship game. In a contest that saw 11 lead changes and six ties, the Hoyas outscored Indiana 8-1 in the final 1:04 of regulation to send the game into overtime on Otto Porter’s lay-up with six seconds left. However, Hoosier Jordan Hulls scored six of his team-high 17 points in the extra session to earn tournament MVP honors. The Legends Classic also saw the collegiate debut of UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad, the most heralded freshman in the nation. In his first two games in Brooklyn, Muhammad averaged 18 points to earn all-tournament honors for the No. 13 Bruins.

2011 – In one of the most exciting tournaments of the year, No. 20 Vanderbilt took the Classic crown. The Commodores defeated NC State, 86-79, in the semifinals at the IZOD Center before facing upstart Oregon State in the final, where Brad Tinsley’s 15-foot jump shot with 4.5 seconds left gave Vandy a 64-62 win over the Beavers. Oregon State advanced to the final with a thrilling 100-95 overtime win against Texas behind Jared Cunningham’s 37-point effort - the second straight game in the Classic in which Cunningham netted a career high. In the consolation game, NC State overcame an 18-point second-half deficit by going on a 28-2 run to capture a 77-74 victory over Texas.

2010 – No. 10 Syracuse took the tournament by the smallest of margins, winning its two Championship Round games by a total of seven points. Rick Jackson dominated for the Orange, averaging 10 points and 13 rebounds en route to MVP honors.

2009 – The Legends Classic moved down the Jersey Shore to historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and saw Florida emerge on the national stage. Unranked heading into the Classic, the Gators won four games, including a 77-74 semifinal round upset of No. 2 and eventual Final Four participant Michigan State. After a 73-58 win against Rutgers, Florida moved into the national rankings, placing 13th in the AP poll.

2008 – No. 4 Pittsburgh began one of the most magical seasons in school history in the Legends Classic, outscoring its four opponents by an average of 18 points per game and culminating with a 57-43 win over Washington State in the championship match.

2007 – The inaugural Legends Classic took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and made an immediate impact on the college basketball landscape with four strong teams playing for the championship – Texas, Tennessee, West Virginia, and New Mexico State. That group included two teams in the preseason Top 15 and, by season’s end, three teams in the Top 20. When it was over, No. 16 Texas downed No. 7 Tennessee, 97-78, for the title.
