The Educational Supervisors: Nick and Hayden both qualified from the Royal London Hospital medical college in 1990 with honours. They both worked as house officers in prosthetics and conservation departments respectively. They have been business partners for 19 years. Nick and Hayden have been Educational Supervisors trainers for the since 2005.

Nick has an MSc, with distinction, in Restorative dentistry from UCL Eastman and is a supervisor for their Masters program. He is the Chair of the Local Dental Network for Essex and representative for Midlands and East of England on the National Steering Group for NHS England. He is also the Postgraduate Dental Tutor for Health Education England at Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust, a Clinical Lecturer on the MSc in periodontology at University of Essex and Honrary Member of Staff at Barts and the London School of Dentistry. He is secretary for the Essex BDA branch, the elected member of General Dental Practice Committee for Essex at BDA headquarters and is a Clinical Assessor for East of England Performance Advisory Group. He also runs the extended dental duties for dental nurses courses for the East of England Deanery. In his part time, he also runs a referral practice for endodontics and prosthodontics and a specialist clinic for treating hypodontia and complex restorative care alongside an orthodontist and periodontist. He is also a national Key Opinion Leader for Dentsply in restorative dentistry and Endodontics.

Hayden has an MSc in Clinical Education. He has overseen the training of the foundation degree hygiene students since 2002, he is currently overseeing four students at the practice. He is responsible for tutorials and works closely with FDs. He has a special interest in cosmetic and aesthetic work.

The Practice: A busy NHS and Private practice in Colchester. We have 10 fully equipped surgeries which are computerised with Software of Excellence 'Exact' and offer air conditioning throughout. We also offer an in-house plaster

room where simple lab work can be carried out and a dedicated decontamination room and full teaching facilities including lecture room and clinical skills laboratory. Hayden and Nick are supported by a team of four associates, two therapists, a hygienist, two radiographers and the nursing and reception staff. The Educational Supervisor: Colin Clamp qualified in 1984 from Guy’s hospital and has been working at Manningtree since (apart from taking a year out to go travelling in 1987). He bought the practice in 1998 and developed it into a busy five surgery practice in the heart of constable country. He has an interest in postgraduate education and has gained a diploma in Restorative Dental Practice at the Eastman and has further postgraduate certificates in advanced surgical and restorative implantology, dental materials and in postgraduate dental education. Colin has been an Educational Supervisor for twenty years and works with an experienced and effective team who enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience with newly qualified dentists, and we also enjoy learning from the foundation dentists. After 32 years in practice, Colin still looks forwards to every day at work. It is a fantastic career that is forever changing with so many opportunities and this is why it is important to keep up to date with developments. You should never get bored! Many of our previous FD’s have stayed on with us, and then gone on to become specialists or consultants! Our philosophy is to have fun whilst being focused. Whilst Colin loves work, he also enjoys not working and is keen on all watersports, particularly windsurfing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing and paddleboading. He also enjoys cycling and snowboarding.

The Practice: We are a busy five surgery practice in Manningtree, the heart of Constable Country. We provide all aspects of private and NHS dentistry to a diverse range of demographic of patients. We are forward thinking and provide implants, Cerec restorations and were one of the first practices in the UK to have a fully integrated clinical system back in the 90’s. All surgeries have fibre-optic handpieces and digital intra oral radiographs, and we have a digital OPT machine. We have a decontamination room with a decontamination nurse. The practice has a fresh and modern feel despite being constrained by being in a grade 2 listed sixteenth century historic building.

Most of our staff have been with us for many years and are experienced with working with newly qualified dentists. We also have DCPs who have completed their extended duties courses and can deliver oral health education and apply topical fluoride to our patients. The Area: Manningtree is a historic market town situated on the banks of the River Stour, in the heart of Constable Country. (Although he must have let some through the net as sometimes I feel that a couple work at the practice!). It is on the main line to Norwich, with London Liverpool Street being 60 minutes away. Most of our trainees have stayed either in Colchester (ten miles south) or Ipswich (ten miles north), and both towns have just about everything that you could ever need. There is an extensive coastline and if you’re into walks or watersports it’s a perfect playground!

After graduating from Bristol dental school in 2008, I went on to spend six months working as a House Officer in oral medicine and oral surgery at the Bristol Dental Hospital, before moving back to Suffolk to start my VT year at Capel Dental Practice. I had a great year with Mark as my trainer and have stayed on to work at the practice as an associate since. During this time I have worked with many foundation dentists, offering advice and support and helping them to settle into life in general practice. I enjoy all aspects of general dentistry and am always looking to improve on my knowledge and skills. Outside of dentistry, I enjoy family time with my wife and two children, long walks with my dog and I am an avid football fan, supporting Ipswich Town.

The Practice: The practice is in a large village next to the A12 between Ipswich and Colchester. It is about 4 miles south of Ipswich and has been established over 30 years and supports 3 dentists.

The practice is situated in a converted house with parking at the rear.

Upstairs there are two fully equipped modern surgeries, an x-ray room with OPG, a state of the art

sterilising room and a small kitchen. Downstairs is the reception and waiting area together with a surgery which has been converted for the use of disabled patients. The practice is fully computerised with digital x-rays and terminals in the surgeries, an operating microscope and an intra-oral camera.

We are a mixed practice and we aim to start the FD off gently and gradually increase the number of patients seen when they feel confident enough. The FD will be encouraged to practice all aspects of dentistry including minor oral surgery and orthodontics if they so wish. Mark & Ashley will be on hand at all times to help out whenever necessary and there is a weekly teaching seminar.

The nursing and reception staff also have a wealth of experience working with FD's which should help the FD quickly settle into life in general practice. It is a small friendly practice and there is a happy atmosphere.

The Area: Capel St Mary is in the heart of Constable Country in South Suffolk on the A12 corridor. It is one hour from London with excellent rail and road access. There are also good road and rail links to Norwich and Cambridge which are also one hour away.

The Heritage Coast is a short drive away and the area is popular with sailors, golfers and walkers. There are excellent sports facilities in the region as well as theatres, cinemas and plenty of pubs and restaurants and the exciting wet dock development in Ipswich.

The Educational Supervisor: I qualified from King’s College London in 2000, and worked at my VT practice for 6 years as an associate. I have been a DFT trainer since 2004, and in 2007 I bought this well-established mixed practice. In 2004 I achieved the MFGDP diploma, and in 2012 the PgCert in Dental Education from the University of Bedfordshire. My special interests include cosmetic dentistry, paediatric dentistry and prosthodontics, and I have recently completed a certificate in implantology. I focus on providing dentistry to a high standard and I have a holistic approach to dental care, believing that the best form of advertising for a practice is a happy patient. I live near Norwich with my wife Kate, a photographer, and my two daughters Georgina and Sophie. We came to Norfolk 16 years ago, and found the quality of life to be fantastic, enjoying a variety of different sports and local culture. Recently I have been doing a lot of cycling and triathlon events for British Heart Foundation and East Anglian Children's Hospices, and I enjoy a variety of watersports on the Norfolk Broads and North Norfolk Coast.

The Practice: Hooker House is a large impressive Victorian building located in the centre of Halesworth. The practice has undergone an extensive refurbishment, with two new surgeries, a new reception area, a new decontamination room compliant with HTM 0105 and staff area. The FD’s surgery is very well equipped, with fibreoptic handpieces and piezo scaler, and new instruments and materials. As well as the full range of NHS services available, we also offer cosmetic treatments, specialist bruxism splints, flexidentures, anti-snoring appliances and implants. There are three other associates working at the practice, and the reception and nursing staff are very experienced and loyal to the practice. The nursing staff are all GDC registered.

Being one of the only NHS providers in the area, we have an established patient base as well as attracting 10-20 new patients a week. We regularly socialise as a practice, with nights out, trips to Southwold or nearby coastal towns. We have also held CPD sessions at the practice with a visiting speaker, and previous FDs have taken part in visiting local schools for dental education or holding a competition for patients during Smile Month. The staff are all local, which means that they know the patients well; this puts the FD at ease in the practice and gives the patients a friendly face. There is a flat on the top floor of the building, which has been converted to be used as staff premises.

The Area: Halesworth is a historic market town, with Hooker House well known as a landmark on its town trail. As well as local amenities and attractive shops, there is a local swimming pool and library. The coast is only 20 minutes away, with the beautiful Suffolk towns of Southwold and Aldeburgh if you like unspoilt beaches and water sports. Norwich is a 35 minute drive, and boasts excellent shopping, theatre and nightlife. Halesworth has good links with London, being on a direct train line to Liverpool St, and is only 1½ hours away from London by car.

Other Points of Interest: My aim is to provide the FD with a relaxed learning environment, free of pressure to meet targets, and the opportunity to work closely with well-trained staff and friendly patients. The Educational Supervisor: My name is Jill Geaney. I am the practice owner and Educational Supervisor at Wedgwood House Dental Surgery, a spacious four-surgery practice near the town centre of Stowmarket in mid Suffolk. I have been a Educational Supervisor since 2004 and more than half of my FD's have gone on to take further qualifications to build their careers.

I have recently completed my MSc in Medical and Healthcare Education which for me was a struggle. It has made me appreciate the challenges faced in acquiring knowledge and qualifications once again. My ambition this year is to get part of the dissertation published.

I have particular interests in occlusion and implants but enjoy all aspects of dentistry. I have traveled widely helping a colleague teach these disciplines in Canada, Egypt, India and Nepal. I am a course demonstrator at Applied Anatomy courses held in Bristol University and on the Las Vegas Maxi Course in the USA. I teach suture removal (part of GDC scope) and periodontology (OHE course) to dental nurses throughout East Anglia.

I worked as a volunteer dentist for the Paralympics in 2012 and was proud to represent my profession at such an event. My practice is one of few practices in Suffolk who host work experience students who are searching for their chosen career and I represent dentists at careers events at Ipswich School and Ipswich High School for girls.

The Practice: Wedgwood House Dental Practice is a family practice with many patients attending since I opened in April 1999. We have an open door policy. A diverse range of patients awaits you with all manner of presenting problems and I guarantee my support for you as a new dentist to meet the everyday challenges that practising dentistry in the NHS presents. Our present FD is seeing a wide variety of cases including crowns, bridges and denture work.

The Area: Stowmarket is a rural town with 20,000 inhabitants in the town and surrounding area. It is possible to rent premises at a reasonable price or to share rooms close by. There is a leisure centre, tennis club and a cinema in the town and several nearby golf courses. The town will never compare with the bright lights of London but it is possible to walk, cycle or drive easily around town and the inhabitants are friendly and keen to have NHS dentistry in the town.

Nearby cities and towns include Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Norwich and Colchester all of which are in easy reach.

Other Points of Interest: The Dental Foundation Training schemes local to me are Ipswich and Norwich, both of which hold their training days mostly on a Friday. Former FDs have assisted with Chernobyl Day: a day spent restoring the teeth of visiting children affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Three weeks in

the UK gives the childrens' immune systems time to recover and each link organisation has to have a dentist and optician to treat the group. We are the practice for the mid- Suffolk link group.

Six of my twelve former FDs have stayed on with the practice which has given the patients much needed continuity.

The Educational Supervisors: Chris has 25 years experience in DFT training, whilst Amit is a a new, young and enthusiastic ES. This combination of experience with someone who was in your shoes not too long will be a great advantage for you. Amit graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2011 and has been in general practice since. He has an MSc in Primary Dental Care and is currently undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate in Dental Education. He has recently taken over the practice from Chris. Outside of dentistry, he enjoys going to the gym and playing sports - mainly football and golf. Chris has been involved with Foundation Training since 1992, when DFT was voluntary! and he has been involved with Whipps Cross, Basildon and Ipswich Hospital Schemes. He is firmly committed to Dental education both personally, developing his own career, and within Teaching with both undergraduates and postgraduate roles. He worked for 3 years in the Hospital service in Oral Medicine and Maxillofacial Surgery departments. He has an interest in Medico/Dento-Legal matters and worked for 4 years as a Part time Dentolegal Adviser for the Dental Defence Union. Outside Dentistry, and never forget there is a wide and varied life out there! His time is occupied with sport(s) both playing and Coaching. He has a home in the French Alps and enjoys all of the foolish pursuits that the mountains offer.

The Practice: The practice has four surgeries. We first opened our doors in 1991 and it has grown, organically, with Vocational/Foundation Training at its heart. With Amit recently taking over, the practice is being modernised. It is fully computerised with Software of Excellence (EXACT) and digital x-rays. We have an excellent team of nurses and receptionists who are experienced in Foundation Training and well placed to meet the changing needs of a Foundation Dentist throughout the year. We are passionate to remain within the NHS and continue to deliver quality dentistry to our patients within a NHS funded contract. Owing to the distance from rail links, this would be a very difficult placement for anyone who did not drive.

The Educational Supervisor: I qualified from Kings College London in 2006 with honours and since been developing my skills in general dentistry. The Practice: North Hill Dental is a forward thinking developing dental practice with over 25 years of history. The property is grade II listed and has plenty of character. We have 4 surgeries, a dedicated tutorial room, fully computerised with Software of Excellence and digital radiographs and OPG machine. The practice is well equipped for most dental procedures including rotary endodontic, oral surgery, implants, restorative cases and we have a vast range of materials. In addition to this we have a SLR camera which can be used for case presentations and an intra-oral camera. We are a busy mixed practice with lovely patients who have been coming here for years. We have a young team who are caring and helpful individuals. We have regular staff social activities and I have no doubt it is an ideal location and practice for a FD. We aim to start the FD off gently until they feel ready to see more patients. The FD will be encouraged to practice all aspects of dentistry at their own speed.

The Area: The practice is situated in Colchester on North Hill, just off the high street. Being in a town centre there are numerous places to chose from for lunch. We are approximately 50 minutes drive from London up the A12 and the main train station is 10 minutes walk which takes 50 minutes to reach Liverpool Street. Moving up from London myself was a big change but I am delighted with area, the people, the lovely local villages and way of life. You will most certainly feel welcomed in Colchester.

Other Points of Interest: Plenty of affordable properties to rent should commuting not be an option. Transport links are good, being a commuter town to London. Local amenities are present as in most towns. There are local hospitals, an arts centre, theatre and health clubs all nearby. Good luck and above all make the most of your training year

The Educational Supervisor: My name is Des Stott. I qualified from the Royal Dental Hospital in 1980 and yes, I do realise that was before you were born! I have interests in implants and orthodontics and completed the Bicon advanced implant course in Boston, Massachusetts in 2005. I am currently secretary of the East Anglian division of the Faculty of General Dental Practice, a member of the Local Dental Committee, the Suffolk Local Professional Network and until recently a part-time clinical assistant in orthodontics at Ipswich Hospital. I have taught clinical photography on the FD schemes in East Anglia and local postgraduate courses and I run the MJDF study group at Ipswich Hospital. I have also been asked to speak on Bicon implants at conferences in London and Boston. I have been a Trainer thirteen times before over the past 26 years.

The Practice: The practice was started in the early 1980s; I bought it in 1989 years ago and moved it to its present location in a 15th Century timbered building in May 1992. There are three modern, well equipped surgeries. We have a full time receptionist, three full time and one part time nurse, a trainee nurse on the National Apprenticeship Scheme and a part-time hygienist (all helpful and friendly and ruled with a rod of iron by our full time practice manager!). We provide a full range of treatment for our patients both NHS and private.

The Area: Needham Market is a small town (without a market incidentally!) in the heart of rural Suffolk but being situated practically on top of the Main A14 trunk road it has easy communication with the Midlands, the North Sea ports of Harwich and Felixstowe, and London. It’s also very convenient for the day release element of the Scheme in Ipswich.

East Anglia has a wealth of cultural and sporting activities, areas of historical interest, and as one of the few areas without an undergraduate dental school; there is a vast amount of postgraduate activity arranged by and for general dental practitioners.

William Tweddell: I have owned this practice since 2005. Prior to this I was an expense sharing partner in a multiple practice. I am also a Dental Advisor for NHS England East. I enjoy a variety of sports and am married with 3 grown up children.

Tanima Mannan qualified in 2012 having spent her Foundation year at the practice, she continued as an associate dentist. Tanima is keen on furthering her postgraduate education; since qualifying has completed her PG Cert in Dental Education, SAAD certificate in Sedation, completed her MJDF examinations, now a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, England. She has also completed year 1 of her MClinDent in Prosthodontics at Kings College London. Tanima is an enthusiastic clinician who is passionate about dentistry. She has shown support to our successive foundation dentists and is a valued member of the team. Her past time activities include traveling, dining and theatre.

The Practice: The practice is situated on the edge of a quiet housing estate in a small village just a few minutes outside Colchester. The nearest railway station (Colchester mainline station) is a short bus ride away and buses currently run every 15 minutes. The practice is also convenient for the A12 (main road from London).

The practice itself is spread over 2 floors of a converted house and accommodates 3 surgeries. It also benefits from an x-ray suite which houses an OPG machine. The practice is fully computerised and all notes are in electronic format. The practice also benefits from digital x-rays and Schick intraoral photography. Further equipment include: protaper rotary and VDW reciprocating endodontic units, Bioart semi-adjustable articulator and facebow.

The practice also has a Cerec machine which enables in-house prosthetic same day restorations.
