Background and Company Performance

Industry Challenges

The global demand for sustainable, economical and efficient solutions for water and

wastewater treatment is spurred by stringent regulations to combat water stress and to

control pollution. Frost & Sullivan notes that conventional water and wastewater

treatment technologies are plagued by high maintenance costs, large footprints, and

inefficiencies in meeting current quality regulations. In some cases, the varying influent

parameters (shock loads) can severely disrupt the treatment process and result in poor

effluent quality.

Frost & Sullivan observes how the MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) is an innovative

and efficient technology consisting of a smaller aeration tank with bio carriers that provide

a surface area for the growth of the biofilm. The biofilm process needs less space than a

conventional activated sludge treatment process and does not require the return of the

activated sludge to sustain microbial growth, which makes its performance independent of

the secondary clarifier’s performance. Frost & Sullivan also appreciates how MBBR

technology significantly reduces construction and operation & maintenance costs - and is

resilient to varying shock loads.

Another major advantage of MBBR treatment technology is its ability to be used as a

retrofit solution for conventional activated sludge treatment plant.

Price/Performance Attributes and Customer Impact

*Compatibility with both coarse and fine bubble aeration, which makes it an ideal option in

both new systems and retrofits

Performance Reliability

Aqwise has installed 450 MBBR sewage treatment plants in more than 50 countries. To

sustain its leadership in product performance and reliability, Aqwise has a fully fledged

R&D facility in Israel. Aqwise’s R&D facility has developed patented MBBR based Aerobic

and Anaerobic solutions such as AGAR® (Attached Growth Airlift Reactor) and DACS®

(Downflow Anaerobic Carrier System) respectively. The AGAR® solution is a unique

combination of an open and protected biomass carrier and a highly efficient aeration

mixing design. DACS® is a high rate anaerobic process which utilizes a unique hydraulic

design that improves the stability and performance of the treatment system.

Walmart Mexico selected Aqwise to install decentralized, packaged wastewater treatment

systems of varying capacities in 50 of its locations to make them more environmentally

friendly. Aqwise’s AGAR® solution (combined with chlorination) has helped Walmart to

reuse treated wastewater for toilet flushing. The exemplary performance of the first

treatment plant installed for Walmart – Mexico by Aqwise instilled clear confidence - and

Walmart - Mexico extended its contract to Aqwise to install AGAR® MBBR package

treatment systems in all its other locations.

Prioritization of Features

Aqwise’s turnkey solutions can be used for residential, industrial and commercial

wastewater treatment; end-to-end MBBR treatment systems can be configured to include

pretreatment and post-treatment and disinfection. The AGAR® MBBR treatment systems

can fit inside a 20- or 40-foot container. Each prefabricated, modular unit can treat up to

200 m3 per day with nutrient removal. The units are suitable for oil & gas and mining

installations, and for resort hotels and remote communities not served by centralized

treatment systems. The AGAR® IFAS (Integrated Fixed film Activated Sludge) treatment

system can also be used to retrofit conventional activated sludge treatment plants. DACS®

can be used as a retrofit or a green field solution high loading wastewater.

The Settecamini wastewater treatment plant in Rome originally could not meet stringent

EU effluent standards. The AGAR® IFAS was first considered in one the existing treatment

trains, which was parallel to the conventional treatment trains. The AGAR® IFAS

retrofitted treatment train was evaluated for both its efficiency and cost effectiveness. The

results proved that the retrofitted treatment train achieved 86% total nitrogen (TN)

removal compared with 64% removal by the conventional treatment system, was

comparatively lower in maintenance and more stable, and met all EU regulatory

standards. The plant selected AGAR® IFAS as the most optimal solution to meet its

requirements.

Customer Purchase Experience

Frost & Sullivan recognizes the fact that Aqwise stands out over its other competitors by

offering financing solutions, such as build-own-operate-transfer to municipal clients that

do not have the necessary project funding. Aqwise showcases its MBBR-based technology

innovations through pilot-scale projects. Mekorot, the national water company of Israel,

collaborated with Aqwise for a development of solution to economically and efficiently

treat nitrate-contaminated water to be used for potable purposes. Aqwise installed a pilot-

scale AGAR® solution of 800 liter/hour capacity, which was evaluated for its capability to

treat and remove biological nitrates and found to be less expensive and more

environmentally friendly when compared with the conventional physicochemical processes

that produce brine, used costly chemicals and was subject to high maintenance. The

effluent standards met both European and US regulationsA agricultural community

adopted the AGAR® technology for its full-scale 70m3/hr water treatment plant.

Customer Service Experience

Aqwise properly offers each customer a tailor-made solution. One of the best examples of

Aqwise’s customer service is the Agra water treatment plant in India. The Yamuna River is

the major source of potable water for the city of Agra, but sewage and industrial

discharges pollute it. The two existing treatment plants could not reduce pollutant levels

to potable standards through conventional physicochemical treatment technology. Aqwise

approached the price-sensitive Agra municipality with an efficient and affordable AGAR®

MBBR solution and demonstrated its expertise through its reference and pilot projects in

Israel. The customer chose Aqwise’s solution - and then realized remarkable

improvements in effluent water quality after the AGAR® MBBR was installed and

commissioned.

The water quality exceeded the client’s expectations in terms of cost and efficiency, and

the plant is providing potable water to 2 million residents of Agra. This is the largest

MBBR water treatment plant, with the capacity to treat 144 MLD (Million Litres per Day)

and is also known for its pioneering innovative MBBR technology used for water

treatment.

Brand Equity

The Aqwise brand is prominent for its unique, patented bio carriers and MBBR-based

solutions which have been innovatively diversified to cater to varied customer

requirements. The Aqwise brand is known for its pioneering efforts and expertise in the

use of MBBR technology for water treatment and anaerobic treatment of waste water

(apart from treating domestic and industrial waste water). Aqwise has partnered with

Aqana BV, which is joint venture to market and implement Aqwise’s Anaerobic treatment

systems. This partnership has strategically helped Aqwise cater to medium- and small-

scale industries and expand its presence in the European market

Aqwise’s product performance and affordability has helped it establish a regional presence

in Latin America and Eastern Europe, which are niche markets relatively untouched by

international players.

Conclusion

Price-sensitive customers’ demand for sustainable, efficient, and affordable water and

wastewater treatment solutions continues to increase. Aqwise has grown tremendously,

with installations in 50 countries. Frost & Sullivan independent analysis concludes that

Aqwise’s market leadership in America and Europe is attributed to its pioneering

development of reliable, high performance solutions. Aqwise’s MBBR-based solutions have

helped customers significantly reduce both construction and maintenance costs. Based on

a proven track record of providing reliable and affordable solutions, Aqwise has earned the

2017 Frost & Sullivan Global Price/Performance Value Leadership Award.

Significance of Price/Performance Value Leadership Ultimately, growth in any organization depends upon customers purchasing from a

company, and then making the decision to return time and again. A key component of

customer retention is the delivery of a high-quality product at a reasonable price. To

achieve these dual goals (customer engagement and price/performance), an organization

must strive to be best-in-class in three key areas: understanding demand, nurturing the

brand, and differentiating from the competition.

Understanding Price/Performance Value Leadership Best-in-class organizations are particularly successful in two critical areas: first, helping

customers to appreciate and enjoy the product at every price point; and second, ensuring

that customers perceive a demonstrable difference in performance features at every

escalating price point. Ultimately, this balance allows companies to profitably deliver a

variety of product options to customers, differentiate the product suite, and compete at

every level of the market.

Best Practice Award Analysis for Aqwise

Decision Support Scorecard

To support its evaluation of best practices across multiple business performance

categories, Frost & Sullivan employs a customized Decision Support Scorecard. This tool

allows our research and consulting teams to objectively analyze performance, according to

the key benchmarking criteria listed in the previous section, and to assign ratings on that

basis. The tool follows a 10-point scale that allows for nuances in performance evaluation;

ratings guidelines are illustrated below.

RATINGS GUIDELINES

The Decision Support Scorecard is organized by Price/Performance Attributes and

Customer Impact (i.e., the overarching categories for all 10 benchmarking criteria; the

definitions for each criteria are provided beneath the scorecard). The research team

confirms the veracity of this weighted scorecard through sensitivity analysis, which

confirms that small changes to the ratings for a specific criterion do not lead to a

significant change in the overall relative rankings of the companies.
