FRANCOIS “THE FRENCH RAW CHEF” Cooking with fresh herbs & vegetables
Coming July 2017
by Alfred Prins
In the wonderful world of ornamental horticulture there exists an insatiable thirst for plants with new and exciting colors, shapes, and growing habits. At Parkland, we deal with numerous suppliers that access many dif-ferent plant developers so we have ready access to count-less new varieties in flowering and foliage plants every year. This year we will see at least sixty new additions to our production list. While it is impossible to list them all here, we can tell you that they will add some exciting new options and planting combinations to your planters and gardens.
Petunias - There are a number of new varieties, almost all unique bi-colors. Most unique is “Amore-Queen of Hearts”-a yellow petunia with a red heart on each “pet-al”. There are several new “Crazytunias” including Cit-rus Twist, Lucky Lilac, Moonstruck, Razematazz and Swiss Dancer. These are all bicolors with unique new color combinations. Finally we also have the reddest petunia ever “Supertunia Really Red” from Proven Winners.
We have beautiful new double deep pink Begonia called “Funky Pink”, and also a new pink Bidens called “Cup-cake”. Blooms on white Bacopa are getting larger with “Betty”, plus there is a new red Bidens called “Bee Dance” which should be an attractive new bee attracter.
In ornamental grasses we have the new “Prince Tut” from Proven Winners –intermediate in size between King Tut and Baby Tut. Indian Mint is a new green foliage “Trailer” that can be used as a trailing foliage enhancement for full sun in flowering or vegetable planters.
There are still many more and we can’t wait to share them all with you! Many are in limited numbers, so visit us soon!

or edible gardeningPotatoes
by Alfred Prins
We are noticing a trend towards growing more edibles and among the easiest to grow whether they be in a large garden plot, raised bed or a simple planter, are potatoes. They come in so many colors and types that they have gone from the boring to the exciting vegetables to grow in our “short” season.
Last year we carried over thirty varieties from the standard tried & true to red, blue, yellow and fingerling types. We have just as many this year and we have the unique varieties from Earth Apples again plus all our standard varieties – many of which are Alberta grown.
Drop-in and get yours! Some exotic types may sell out early so don’t wait too long. We do carry potatoes right into early June for late planting and harvesting.
We also carry numerous varieties of onions, asparagus, three varieties of rhubarb, strawberries and more!

At Parkland Garden Cen-ter we take great pride in carrying the best possible selection of bulbs for flow-ers and vegetables that can be grown successfully in our sometimes challeng-ing climate. Growing from bulbs is generally quicker than starting seeds, so we can grow some truly amaz-ing and exotic flower from bulbs; from giant dinner-plate dahlias to the tall ex-otic gladiolas.
This year is Canada’s 150th year and to help show our patriotic colors all summer
we will have the Canadian Celebration & True North selection of dahlias, gladio-lus, lilies and more all in red and white. These will come into bloom after the Cana-dian Celebration tulips you planted last fall. Also, the following are exciting and new for this year:
DAHLIA - ‘Shaka Zulu’ deep maroon with frosty white centers
DAHLIA - ‘Brigitta Alda’ dark burgundy dinnerplate size
DAHLIA - ‘Hart’s Dr. Mc Mur-ray’ - a new giant dinner-plate size dahlia in copper yellow
DAYLILY - (Hemerocallis) ‘Barbara Barnes’ and ‘Here Lies Butch’-two new multi-colored varieties with very ruffled edges - very hardy
LILY - Double-Sensation - a new double red Asiatic Lily with white center and no pollen
All the usual favorites are here also, so drop in and get yours before they sell out!

Hart’s Dr. Mc Murray
Grasses have grown in popularity over the past couple of years. Grasses are easy to take care of and there are a lot of varieties hardy to our zone. The most popular is Karl Forest-er Grass which is tall and green. 150cm tall and 80 cm wide. Looks like wheat in late fall and winter. Blue Oat Grass is just as sought after with steely blue foliage and excellent contrast it is 90cm tall and 60cm wide. New for 2017 is three new grasses that are red in color. This has been difficult in the past to get a hardy red grass. Switch grass is an upright sturdy grass. Seed heads form in the fall and like Karl Forester keep through the winter.
PRAIRIE FIRE - This tall selection forms an upright clump of blue-green leaves that develop wine red tips in early summer; airy heads of tiny green flowers appear on plumes in late sum-mer; perfect as an accent or massed in borders.
RUBY RIBBONS - Red, airy seed heads; blue-green foliage turns burgundy-red in mid-summer.
CHEYENNE SKY - A compact selection forms a small clump of blue-green leaves; airy heads of dark red flowers appear in late summer.

Grow Your OwnFoodie Fantastic
It’s a growing trend, and with all the increasing transportation costs causing prices of fresh produce to skyrocket, there is even more reason to grow your own! Even if you have only limited space you can grow your own healthy treats. Many of our newer selections are more compact so they can be grown in planter pots by themselves or mixed with colorful flowers. Things seem to be heating up even more on the garden scene with the demand for hot peppers increasing – and there are more available now!
KALE - “Prizm”-2016 AAS Winner – this is a new dwarf kale good in containers in part shade – looks and tastes great right up to heavy frost.
CUCUMBER - “Bush Pickle”, and “Patio Snacker” are compact great in smaller spaces. “Lemon” is a round yellow novelty, and “Cucamclon” are cute little melons that can be eaten raw or pickled.
PEPPERS - Hot is in! “Tobasco”, “Ghost” and “Anaheim” are all hot to superhot!
TOMATOS - “Tomaccio” is a sweet cherry type that is best for sun-dried raisin tomatos. “Dancing with Smurfs” a new black cherry tomato. The newest innovation in tomatos for 2017 is the “Take 2 Combo Pot”. It comes with two compact varieties – one cherry and one beefsteak type – together in a 12” (30cm) planter pot – a great space saver!
BEETS - “Bull’s Blood” – dark burgundy leaves make a great color splash in any full-sun planter.
EGG PLANT - “Patio Baby”- compact grower - great for the patio....and there are so many more to add color, flavour and goodness to your planters, gardens, and gourmet pallete! Some are in limited amounts-drop in early and don’t miss ‘em!
BUG-OFF-BOWLS - another great new idea - an attractive com-bination of lemon scented herbs and geraniums in a decora-tive bowl. Set them next to your favourite seating area in the garden to ward off those pesky mosquitos and wasps!

Consuming raspberries has been proven to have many health benefits, this year choose your favorite raspberry for your family to grow. It is one of easiest fruit bushes to grow and the most prolific fruits to grow in the garden. Raspberries have a long history. There is evidence that Paleolithic Cave Dwellers ate them as part of their diet, even though the canes were not cultivated until the 4th Century A.D.
In Greek stories the berries where white and the nursemaid of Zeus, Ida pricked her finger and the berries turned red. Rubus idaeus means bramble bush of Ida in latin which was named for the nursemaid and the mountain where they grew. In the middle ages the juice was used as a red stain in art work and dies for clothing.
The best location for Raspberries is a loam soil with high or-ganic matter. The location should have good air circulation to prevent disease. An 8m row will produce enough for a family of four. Plant your raspberries in early spring for a great crop the next year. The key to success with raspberries is to:
Avoid high nitrogen
Trim and thin canes in late fall or early spring
Harvest in cool of morning or evening, avoid afternoon heat
Fertilize in early spring with balanced fruit & shrub fertilizer
Water well in the fall to prevent drying out in winter/spring
Floricane Raspberries have new shoots or suckers that are sent up every year. In the first year, the suckers complete their growth and the next year produce fruit. The cane after producing fruit dies and the process repeats. That is why you only prune second year growth each year which are dead branches. Flori-cane varieties produce in the early to mid summer.
BOYNE - Large sweet, red fruit produced on same year wood. Great for eating fresh, freezing or preserves.
AUBIN BLACK - Hardy vigorous grower producing good quality, black fruit for preserves or eating fresh.
MUNGER - Large, shiny berries and is excellent for eating fresh, or for use in jams, jellies, and preserves.
WYOMING - A non-suckering, black raspberry with a pleasing flavour. Har-vest in mid summer.
Primocane Raspberries produce fruit on the current seasons growth and pro-duction begins in late August. Areas with long falls are ideal for primocane varieties. All canes can be trimmed back in fall, thus eliminating winter survival problems.
DOUBLE DELIGHT - Large, red berries having a sharp delightful flavor
FALL GOLD - Two crops per year, sum-mer/fall. Fruit is large, yellow with very sweet flavor and very juicy.
RED RIVER - Red, sweet fruit harvested on same year wood. Heavy producer. Harvest in late summer.
HERITAGE - Red, very good producer and is tart to taste.
AMITY - Raspberries are ever-bearing with medium to large dark red berries that are very firm. Harvest raspberries when the ber-ries are easily removed from the bush. They should have good color and still be a bit firm. To keep the harvest going pick your berries three or four times a week. After you remove the berries it is advisable to cool them fast or they may breakdown in the container.

While we are waiting for the fruit season to start, why not enjoy a blast of summer. Nowadays it is easy to find Organic frozen fruits which often times are fresher and less expensive than the out of season “fresh ones”. In this recipe, if you are using frozen fruits, omit the ice cube and replace with 1/4 cup of filtered water or as little or much as needed to obtain the desired consistency. Be mindful that the chia seeds will absorb a lot of the liquids in this recipe. Your smoothie will get thicker in the first 10 minutes as the marvel seeds absorb liquids up to 9x their volume. This smoothie is a complete meal in itself. Aside from the bounty of vitamins, minerals and fibers, berries abound in an-ti-oxidants. The Chia seeds will add a complete protein, the essential omega 3 and more fibers. Enjoy guilt free!

GARDENER’S BEST FRIENDS
by Michel Touchette and Pete Van Vilet
The Canadian Shield Rose was released by the Vineland Research and Innovation Center specifically to coincide with Canada’s 150th birthday. This rose, bred by Larry Dyck from Morden Research Station, is hardy in zone 3 and has shown excellent leaf disease resistance at Morden and Vineland for the last 5 years. Canadian Shield offers large red flowers each with over 40 petals. This shrub rose matures at a height of 1.25m and spread of 1m on the prairies and may grow possibly larger in warmer climates.
This year, let’s show our patriotism and love for our country by featuring our Canadian colours in the prairie garden. Together, a red Canadian Shield Rose accompanied with a white Oscar Peterson Rose symbolize our nation’s flag colours. Surround the red and white with the multicoloured blooms of Campfire Rose to celebrate Canada’s rich diversity.
