Lynda's Lines from the President’s pen…

We are nearly two months into 2017. Did anyone make a resolution to practice daily? Is anyone practicing daily? If you are, be sure to share with the rest of us the method to your madness (I need some help!) Our January meeting, exchanging cards, was lots of fun and I believe everyone enjoyed sharing hints and tips with everyone else. The cards were gorgeous and I think interesting for our guests to understand our thought processes. Thank you to everyone who participated, and all those who were at the meeting.

Our February meeting will be a “hands on” activity that is very simple but has impressive results. Leslie Wade will lead us in monoline letters with color added. Everyone who attends will take home something to show for the evening and boatloads of inspiration. Continue reading the Calligram for supplies to bring and samples of what we will do.

We are planning an “in house,” one-day workshop in April on bookbinding. Look through the Calligram for more information, as this plans to be a fun opportunity to learn something new or review what you already know.

As always, if you have worked on anything, whether completed or not, bring it to the meeting to share with everyone. I know I always enjoy looking at original artwork. Until the fourth Monday in February –

CALLIGRAPHY GUILD OF OK - TULSA Presents a WORKSHOP WEEKEND

Location: Tulsa Garden Center LG-Helmerich Building

Workshop #One, Friday, September 22, 2017 9am-4pm STROKES OF REBELLION: Lettering with a Ruling Pen

with PETER THORNTON

Calligraphy--beautiful writing, has historically appealed to the left and logical side of our brain. In this workshop we shall be working on numerous exercises, using letters that produce a wide range of tones and textures, where absolute legibility is somewhat sacrificed for visual interest, and where logic is replaced with invention and play. Whilst using non-traditional and traditional tools, we shall primarily be using the Folded Ruling Pen, a tool that openly encourages a more adventurous (and less precious) approach. Beginning with some simple and fundamental strokes, we shall carefully build up alphabets that have a healthy disregard for the 'safe and pretty' for ones that carry a certain 'rebel' demeanor.

With the use of colour (gouache and watercolor), we will be combining and balancing our new-found skills of tonal and textural excitement with our conventional and 'safe' pen and pencil work, to create a perfect foil and partner in our finished pieces.Throughout, there will be many demonstrations, short talks and explanations, including the making of a Folded Ruling Pen. A ruling pen will be made for each student should they wish. Peter Thornton, Hon. Fellow of CLAS

ENROLLMENT FEE (Friday Only): $75/member, $105/non-member

CALLIGRAPHY GUILD OF OK- TULSA Presents a WORKSHOP WEEKEND

Location: Tulsa Garden Center LG-Helmerich Building

Workshop #Two, Saturday & Sunday, September 23-24, 2017, 9am-4pm ITALIC FORMS & 'FLAVOURFUL' VARIATIONS

with Peter Thornton

We shall begin with a gentle overview of the Form and Rhythm of the 'normal italic,' to ensure we all start from a strong and unified base letter using both pencil and pen.

Then, by changing this rhythm (and other factors) we will achieve a wide range of 'flavours' in a simple and logical manner, thus relying on a 'method of study' and not the hollow strategy of hope!

Variations of italic open to us to work on during our time together will be the Formal and sale to the dynamic and edgy to the elegant and spacious to the modern poly-rhythmic and rebel using the larger nibs and/or a Folded Ruling Pen."

A feature of the workshop will be the production of a project as an 'aid memoir' of the workshop and our time together.

Throughout the class will be many demonstrations and short discussions along with much personal and sensitive tuition to help clarify any areas of doubt and to aid in any future direction.

Open to all levels of enthusiasm and experience from 1 years or less to 10 years or more (or 1 years 10 times over?).

Peter Thornton, Hon. Fellow of CLAS

Thank You From June… Thank you to everyone that have sent cards and messages over the last 5 months following Bill's major back surgery in September and then his pancreas surgery in January at OU Medical Center in OKC.  He did not have cancer, but did have a fast growing cyst inside. The doctor removed the "tail" of the pancreas.  We are so grateful that the surgeries and recovery have gone so well.  Thanks again everyone for your thoughtfulness.

Calligraphers to Know-and-Tell – Carol DuBosch Carol DuBosch lives in Portland, Oregon and teaches calligraphy full-time. She first encountered the edged pen and the Italic script at age 12. Her high school art teacher, who was a student of Lloyd Reynolds (another Calligrapher to Know-and-Tell), included calligraphy in the curriculum. Carol received a degree in Graphic Design and has focused on calligraphy and teaching for over 50 years. Her favorite script is Italic but also likes Bone (see the sample). One of Carol’s perfect creative activities is designing envelopes that can actually be mailed, such as those in the Graceful Envelope Contests. Advice she has for new, and all, calligraphers is 1) practice, at least 10 minutes every day, 2) make real things (cards, envelopes, bookmarks), and 3) date your work so you have a record of how much you have improved. Carol is teaching “BONE: Bookhand with a Twist” and “Folded Pen Adventures” at LetterWorks 2017, the International Calligraphy Conference, in Ogden, Utah, June 24 – July 1. Her website is <caroldubosch.com> which shows lots of her work and even has some downloads.
