THE SCHOLARSClarence Jazz Festival is dedicated to developing the next generation of young Tasmanian players. As part of its commitment it invites three young artists to participate in a scholarship program which provides six months of private lessons from acclaimed jazz practitioners.

This culminates in a performance for opening night at the Bellerive Boardwalk (Day 7) with former recipients and our Ambassadors. This year’s recipients are:

JACK LARK

SCHOLARSHIP IN MALE VOCALS

JACK BATCHELOR SCHOLARSHIP IN BRASS

FRASER REYNOLDS THE IAN PEARCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN PIANO (supported by Hobart Jazz Club)

THE AMBASSADORSEach year the Clarence Jazz Festival invites an Ambassador aboard to MC the concerts, guest with the bands and provide master class opportunities for our developing young players. For its 21st Birthday, the festival has invited all three of its regular impresarios to share the roll, bringing with them their favourite performing outfits and culminating in the ultimate performance at the Bellerive Boardwalk, the Ambassador’s Grand Finale. See one or all three of them each night.

GEORGE WASHINGMACHINE the man with the (white) goods returns with violin, vocal chords and an abundance of energy. Also known for his appearances in television and film and for his visual art, this true Renaissance man is also appearing with his jazz vocal group Blues Point.

DAN BARNETT big band leader, composer and dashing in a black vest brings his trombone to the fore as Clarence Ambassador. A maestro of the slide and subtly seductive vocalist to boot, Dan swings from shuffle to gallop and also sings with Blues Point.

PAUL WILLIAMSON has blown more reeds than the sea breeze on his tenor saxophone. With a string of recording and performing credits and the beating heart of jazz pumping through his valves, Paul brings his infamous Hammond Combo to the Jazz Lounge at Rosny Barn.
