The BuildingSensor City is a new 27,000 sq ft purpose-built city centre hub, housing the technical expertise, business support and physical space required by today’s developers of sensor and Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
The building includes 21 flexible working suites, ranging from 140sq ft to 829 sq ft, all of which can be sub-divided to suit tenants’ requirements. There are shared meeting rooms, workshops, breakout areas on the ground, first and second floor, and a dedicated conference space for up to 80 people on the third. The conference space is completely self-contained and includes: a reception area, cloakroom, kitchen, and a separate exhibition/refreshments area, which opens out onto a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the city.
The technology development zone includes integrated laboratory services, software development support and an electronics laboratory housing some of the most sophisticated equipment in the country. Lab technicians and academics are on hand to provide expert advice, and being located so close to Liverpool’s universities, Sensor City tenants and members can also benefit from knowledge exchange and access to further facilities within KQ Liverpool.
Sensor City is just a short walk away from Lime Street Railway Station and the many amenities that Liverpool City Centre has to offer.
Named in the Liverpool Echo’s Magnificent Seven feature and is Liverpool’s only speculative commercial development to complete in 2017.

LaboratoriesSensor City is home to some of the most sophisticated laboratories for sensor and IoT technology development in the UK. The facilities housed in the laboratories have the capability to allow entrepreneurs and businesses to produce robust prototypes and proof of concept devices. This will allow them to demonstrate new developments with customers, partners and investors and, coupled with the invaluable business support that Sensor City offers, will speed up the process of bringing their products to market.
The workshops on site can facilitate the design, creation, testing and validation of novel sensor concepts and Sensor City’s in-house technical expertise can assist with production challenges. Bespoke training programmes will help companies to learn the key skills required to develop their own manufacturing expertise. The ecosystem at Sensor City also allows tenants to interact with sensor specific experts through surgery sessions, covering business essentials and technical queries.

PartnershipsSensor City is a joint venture between the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University, and one of the country’s four flagship University Enterprise Zones. In 2014, the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (now Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, BEIS) backed the project with a £5 million University Enterprise Zone status capital investment award. This was matched with £5m of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), as part of the European Structural and Investment Fund’s Growth Programme 2014-2020. The Universities actively support Sensor City, providing the ecosystem with direct access to expert technical support as required.

What is Knowledge Quarter Liverpool?Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool) brings together the city’s key partners to collaborate in a creative environment and close the economic gap with London. To do this, KQ Liverpool sets out to create and promote the dynamic and innovative industries operating within its boundaries.
KQ Liverpool is already home to some of the world’s most influential players in science, health, technology, culture and education, with over £1bn of new developments in the pipeline. To support the growth of new innovative businesses, KQ Liverpool intends to support programmes that invest in the 54,000 students that study in the city and reposition Liverpool at the forefront of global innovation.
KQ Liverpool has a plan that focuses on three main areas: making the place, improving connectivity and attracting investment and creating opportunities. A key part of these plans is Paddington Village, a £1bn flagship expansion site that will house 1.8m square feet of science, technology, education and health space. With Greenwich Village in New York as inspiration, Paddington Village will be a great place to live, work and socialise.
How it fitsSensor City is situated at the gateway to KQ Liverpool and is the first port of call for visitors to the Knowledge Quarter when they alight the train at Lime Street Station. KQ Liverpool brings together the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool City Council and The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS
