Service Equipment and Tool Servicing Training Service training is based on a hands-on approach in which technicians spend the majority of the time training in a shop environment. Technicians are trained in the processes detailed in our service manuals, safety best practices, and service quality standards and procedures. After completion of a service training course, technicians are more aware of the hazards in their work environment, more efficient, and turn out the highest quality product.

These courses can be conducted at a customer facility or in one of our training facilities: World Houston, Air Center and Conroe, Texas, for North America, and Dubai, UAE for Eastern Hemisphere.

Drilling EssentialsThis exploratory course focuses on the concepts, terminology, tools, and processes used in drilling a well, including a complete overview of the workflow from the office to the rig location. This is an exciting and immersive course and nothing like you have taken before!

Learning Outcomes• Define terminology and concepts used in drilling, such as AFE costs, risks and well timing. • Describe the drilling process, the rig systems, and personnel involved in the drilling process. • Identify and describe the function of downhole tools in the drilling process. • Explain the concept of well design, including the planning, engineering, and the data and analysis techniques needed to design a quality well.

Drilling Motor TechnologyThis introductory course is designed to provide customers with the opportunity to learn about the design and function of each series of NOV motors.

Learning Outcomes• List and explain the function of each main sub-assembly of a motor. • Explain how different configurations of power sections affect the torque and RPM outputs of PDM motors. • List the main elastomers available for power sections from both Monoflo and Robbins & Myers and describe the advantages and limitations of each. • Describe the coatings available for rotors and describe the benefits and limitations of each. • Describe the two main types of bearing assemblies used in NOV motors and give the advantages and limitations of each. • Identify common types of damage to motors and list possible causes of each type. • Use the motor handbook to select the best power section for various applications, given all the necessary job information.

Coiled Tubing EssentialsThis course covers thru tubing operations executed using coiled tubing, including operations taking place in a well that has been drilled and had the production case set. The course also describes primary and special tools manufactured by NOV and used in coiled tubing operations.

Drill Bit EssentialsThis two-day course will give the attendee in-depth knowledge of International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) drill bit classification system, nomenclature, and dull grade reporting procedures. Attendees will learn about the two major classes of drill bits commonly used in oilfield drilling and review drill bit design, drill bit cutting structure, and drillbit selection exercises. The importance of drill bit hydraulics in the drilling process will be reviewed and the use of hydraulic calculation software/applications highlighted.

Borehole Enlargement (BHE)This course covers all phases of borehole enlargement, including borehole enlargement overview, bhe application training, bi-center technology, operation guidelines for bi-center bits, Anderreamer™ concentric underreamer, fixed-cutter string tools, basic hole-opening BHA design, and V-Stab™ vibration damping tool. The course concludes with a team exercise and final exam.

Drilling Jars in Stuck Pipe RecoveryThis course will provide explanation about jar mechanisms, parts, and the Jar Placement Program. Participants will receive hands-on training using Bowen™ and Griffith™ jar instruction manuals.

Learning Outcomes• Describe and explain the majority of applications in which jars are successfully used. • Distinguish between drilling and fishing jars. • List and explain the main considerations in determining the best placement of a jar in a given application. • Case studies using Jar Placement Program on regionally used BHA configurations. • Recommend the optimum placement of the jar based on the outputs from the placement program, accepted rules of thumb and experience.

Technology Training Section

Agitator™ System Training for MWDThis course focuses on drilling performance benchmarks that can be set with the Agitator™ system in various applications. This course reviews operational considerations and mitigation of interference with MWD while using the Agitator system.

Learning Outcomes• Describe the internal mechanism and working principle of the Agitator tool and the shock tool. • Describe how the Agitator system can improve the downhole processes in various operations, including fishing and coil tubing applications. • List and explain the specific benefits of using the Agitator system with steerable motors in directional drilling and RSS. • List all the pre-job information required for an Agitator system job and placement. • Explain the principles of avoiding mud pulse MWD interference with the use of the Agitator system.

Drillstring DesignThis joint course with our Grant Prideco and Drilling and Intervention business units has drillstring design as a backbone, focusing on drillpipe failure modes and prevention. Drilling engineers will learn drillstem design and how to best select solutions when building the drillstring based on the mechanical, geometrical and hydraulics characteristics of the tools.

Learning Outcomes• Describe the drillstring design process in context with other planning and operational considerations. • Understand underlying physics of drillstring failures and mechanical properties of drillstring materials. • Understand performance properties of drillstring components and how to apply design margins. • Diagnose and mitigate vibration to reduce drillstring damage and failure. • Optimize a drillstring inspection program using the latest industry standards. • Understand the basis for industry software design tools, including torque and drag, casing wear, and hydraulics. • Understand design of cost-effective BHAs and match them to your drill bit.

Stuck Pipe with Fishing ToolsThe purpose of this course is to explain the methodology of fishing. Participants will review common fishing tools and their uses and will learn about preventing and freeing stuck pipe.

Learning Outcomes• Explain the hole trends and causes of the hole deviation associated problems • Identify the difference between the different types of stuck pipe. • List and explain reasons for a planned or unplanned fishing job. • Select the correct tool for a specific fishing application. • Use the fishing jar placement program. • Case studies for successful fishing operations and team work exercise.

BHA Incident InvestigationWhen a BHA incident occurs downhole, it can result in non-productive time and unplanned costs for the operator. Most of the causes for these types of incidents are preventable. In this course, you will investigate several common BHA incidents to determine the cause of the incident and recommend solutions that will reduce downhole BHA incidents in the future. We will share with you everything we know about common damage modes and causes, how and what data to analyze, and available NOV resources to help you complete your investigation.

Learning Outcomes• Describe the root cause analysis (RCA) process in context with real-life scenarios. • List steps for charting casual factors as they relate to drilling incidents • Understand common drilling incidents which result in loss of capital and time. • Learn preventive strategies to avoid incidents and methods engineers can apply to avoid them.

Service Equipment and Tool Servicing Training Section

LocationThe course is held in our NOV Air Center Training Facility, Texas, which is adjacent to Houston, and our NOV Training Facility in Dubai, UAE, or customer locations. The UAE training facility is located in the Jebel Ali Free Zone, just outside of Dubai. Training schedules at a customer’s facility must meet certain requirements: availability of a room to conduct the classroom training, a crane, and TorqueMaster unit.

TorqueMaster™ Make-Up and Break-Out Unit Basic Service Training (SETT)NOV Drilling and Intervention is pleased to offer a standard one-day basic TorqueMaster™ unit training course. The objective of this course is to teach the key points of proper maintenance and safe operation of a TorqueMaster unit. This course offers service technicians the opportunity to gain knowl-edge and to practice skills which will increase the life of the TorqueMaster unit, as well as create a safer working environment. This course is education-al and process based.

Learning Outcomes• Obtain essential product knowledge on TorqueMaster unit• Learn to accurately identify TorqueMaster unit components• Become familiar with basic maintenance• Gain basic knowledge of calibration• Gain knowledge of inspection of damage on TorqueMaster units• Gain the ability to safely operate a TorqueMaster unit• Gain knowledge of documentation, operating manuals, inspection and maintenance reports

TorqueMaster™ Make-Up and Break-Out Unit Advanced Service Training (SETAT)The objective of the standard four-day advanced TorqueMaster unit training course is to teach the key points of proper maintenance, safe operation, basic hydraulics and troubleshooting. This course offers service technicians the opportunity to gain knowledge and to practice skills which will increase the life of the TorqueMaster unit, as well as create a safer working environment. This course is educational and process based. The objective of this course is to teach the key points of proper and safe service of the NOV fishing jars. Upon completion of this service training course, the student will become competent in the knowledge and skills necessary to properly and safely service NOV fishing jars. This course is educational and process based.

Learning Outcomes• Fishing and remedial tool history • Fishing jars - Various components of fishing jars, the functions of each component, and the differences of the various types of jars are discussed. • Intensifiers and bumper subs - Discussed in this section are the various components of intensifiers and bumper subs, the functions of each component, and the differences between the fishing tools. • Damage - Participants will gain an understanding of the damage that can occur to fishing jars, intensifiers, and bumper subs, and the possible causes of damage. • Common formation problems - The different formations and the problems they present for drilling and fishing operations are covered. • Fishing jar placement program - A brief overview of the fishing jar placement program and the benefits of the program are highlighted. • Hydrostatic balancing - Two methods of hydrostatically balancing a stroking tool are reviewed. • Documentation - Service manuals, service reports, torque specifications, and service quality documents are covered in this section.

Bucking Unit Service TrainingThis one-day bucking unit service training course teaches equipment operators and service technicians how to safely and correctly operate our Peck-O-Matic™ bucking unit, make up and break out premium or standard tubular connections, and perform preventive maintenance. Our practical, hands-on course activities simulate tasks performed at your facility, helping prevent damage to your connections and extend the life of your unit.

Block Control System (BCS)The course includes an overview of the DAQ power-up procedures and visual checks; sensor set-up, connection, fault finding, calibration and configuration. The course also covers the Baylor 2025B system with a basic introduction to friction and eddy current brake principles; system fault-finding and auxiliary panel. The driller’s control panel is also covered focusing on proper operation of the system.
