since 2004 we have been connecting caring donors to causes that matter. We exist for Stratford, St. Marys and Perth County – today, tomorrow, forever.

this past year has been one of both collaboration and connection. on the following pages you will learn about projects, old and new. We have partnered with others to build deeper connections between citizens and our community, encouraged kindness and gained a better understanding of the motivation of local donors.

We are very pleased to share that, as of December 2017, we have attained close to $4.5 million in endowed assets. that’s an increase of $1 million in the last year. Moreover, donation revenue to the CommunityFoundationreachedover$933,000,while we welcomed seven new endowed funds and eight new named funds under our Smart & Caring Community Fund umbrella. What an amazing demonstration of our donors’ commitment to community philanthropy!

With this growth of assets, our community investment flourishes. As noted in our financial statements on page 18, grants made by the Community Foundation were $176,668 in 2017 – the largest amount to date!

We’ve persistently grown awareness about the Community Foundation through our expanded outreach – helping to strengthen connections within our community. the third annual Community Impact Celebration featured a celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. to celebrate this milestone, historical stories were shared by our two local museums (page 12). Along with our many partners, wehostedourfirstVitalConversationon“senseofbelonging and connection” – a fundamental human need that is essential to people’s sense of happiness andwell-being.Wealsocollaboratedwithothersto create the first ever stratford Perth Donor survey – to gain a philanthropic snapshot of our communities.Importantly,RandomActofKindnessDay(page16)continuestoinspirekind-heartedacts and we proudly hosted special celebratory launchesaroundthecounty.Finally,the9th annual Mayors’Gala(page16)inJanuary2018wasanothergreat success, raising close to $110,000 to fund our operational needs and leadership activities.

In August 2016, the stratford Perth Community Foundation (sPCF) partnered with the University of Waterloo Community,Health,environment,Communications(CHeC)Initiativetocreateadonorsurveytocaptureasnapshot of philanthropy in our local communities and gain a better understanding of the donor makeup within stratford, st. Marys and Perth County.

the project was initiated when the sPCF identified a lack of knowledge about donors and their thoughts, wants andperceptionswithintheregion.thepurposeofthesurveywastohelpcharitiesandnot-for-profitorganizationsbetter understand and serve their communities while providing them with more information about local donors. the following organizations participated in the stratford, st. Marys and Perth County Donor Demographic survey: United WayPerth-Huron,StratfordFestival,StratfordGeneralHospitalFoundation,Stratford-PerthHumaneSocietyandtheStratford-PerthYMCA.

the st. Marys Museum, located in a heritage house constructed in 1854 from locally quarried limestone byoneofthetown’sfirstsettlers,Georgetracy,isanimportant part of local history. In addition to the main building, the Museum is home to many artifacts and tools used by early settlers of the area. What life must have been like back then!

In recent years, the Museum has offered an onsite early SettlersProgramandwelcomedlocalGrade3studentsto learn about the area’s history and what life was like for early settlers in st. Marys and Perth County. the students that have gone through the program reported that they experienced a deeper connection with their community and an appreciation for the Museum that they did not have before.

With the success of the onsite early settlers Program, Amy Cubberley, Curator and Archivist at the Museum, wanted to expand the program to engage more local youth. the challenges she faced were the limitations rural schools had with costs associated around transporting students

toandfromtheMuseum.“Wewantedtoinspirealifelongappreciation for history and cultural resources for our students who may not be able to access the Museum outside of school,” says Amy.

An application to the Community Foundation for the earlySettlersoutreachProgramsoonfollowed.“When we heard we had received a grant for our outreach program from the Annie and Isabelle Chesterfield Fund and the St. Marys Smart & Caring Community Fund, we were very grateful. Without this funding and support from our community, we would not be able to reach so many students,” adds Amy.

Museum staff and local experts visited the schools five times during the school year, discussing a different theme about life in the 1800’s. the interactive program

consisted of games, group work and hands on learning regarding tools and artifactsusedbyearlysettlers.“Alotof the kids didn’t know the st. Marys Museum existed and now, because of this program, we’re seeing some of them at the Museum on school breaks, bringing their families with them,” notesAmy.“It’swonderfultosee.”

to help address a major gap in support for people who arelesbian,gay,bi-sexual,transgenderandqueer/questioning(LGBtQ+),optimismPlaceWomen’sShelterand support services collaborated with the Avon MaitlandDistrictSchoolBoardanditsGay-StraightAlliance(GSA)groupstostarttheLGBtQ+outreachProgram.

the organizers saw a deep need to create sustainable and wide-spreadaccesstosocialservicesforLGBtQ+youth–the first initiative of its kind in Perth County.

“Wewantedouryoungpeopletohaveapositiveandinclusive place to learn about their own sexuality as well as mental health, sexual health and consent,” says Dylan Bruxer,LGBtQ+ConsultantatoptimismPlace.

Lastspring,afterreceivingseedfundingfromtheLloydandnancyRobertsonYouthInitiativeFund,theLGBtQ+program was able to host a workshop for 45 Perth County students.theyheardfromakeynotespeakeratGetReAL,ayouth-focusedorganizationthatenergizesLGBtQ+students and their allies to voice their stories. students also discussed homophobia, healthy relationships, appropriate language and they participated in a creative art project. Funding also helped to provide important

informationbookletsfortheGSAgroupsineachofthelocal high schools.

organizers note that being able to offer this program has opened the door for collaboration with other social serviceproviderse.g.Healthunit,PoliceServicesetc.–some of which were at the workshop to answer questions and offer support.

theLGBtQ+outreachProgramcontinuestoprovideoutreach and encouragement to local students on a regular basis. Many students receive counselling and get connected to services they need. And, importantly, they better understand their rights.

For the past eight years, retired Principal sheree Fleischauer has volunteered one-houraweekthroughthe Big Brothers Big sisters (BBBs) In school Mentoring program in north Perth. she knew she wanted to be a mentor after witnessing the impact that mentors had on the lives of children at her school. over the years, she has been a BBBs mentor to 15 children-someofwhichhavecontinued their relationship with her into adulthood. “Wecannotchangetheircircumstances, but we can provide them with a positive, accepting relationship that allows them to feel good about themselves,” says sheree.

to become an In school Mentor, the process is simple and the schedule is flexible to fit each volunteer’s schedule. People from all different kinds of backgrounds have volunteeredforBBBSincludingaJr.B.ListowelCyclonesplayerand“trudy,”amentorthatstartedattheageof91!“thekidsdon’tneedmuch,it’stheone-on-onetimewith them that’s important. It’s building a positive adult relationship, without judgement, that makes all the difference,” adds sheree.

MeghanMartin,executiveDirectorforBBBSofListoweland District, can’t stress enough how important these volunteersaretothechildren.“Spendingonehouraweekwiththesekidsdoingnon-academicactivities– from building and baking to reading and colouring – can build confidence and coping skills that carry on throughout their lives,” shares Meghan.

In 2017, the BBBs In school Mentoring program received funding from the North Perth Smart & Caring Community FundandtheJimandLaurelLaughtonFamilyFund.

the North Perth Smart & Caring Community Fund, started in 2015 by the people of north Perth, continues to grow and support projects and programs within north Perth. It’s a fund for the community that anyone can give to – from $10 to $100,000.

“thefundingthatwereceivedhashelpedusfilltheactivity bins that the volunteers use with the kids and it has also aided with the marketing and administration oftheprogram,”notesMeghan.“theCommunityFoundation grants that we have received over the years have been instrumental to the program and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

A new, online resource has been created by the social ResearchandPlanningCouncil(SRPC)toassistintrackingthewell-beingofourcommunities–wherewearedoingwell and where we may be facing challenges.

“myPerthHuron”helpsinterestedcitizens,businesses,municipalgovernmentsandnot-for-profitsbetterunderstand how real people who live in our communities are doing. traditional assessments of a community’s well-beingmeasurelarge-scaleeconomicactivity,suchasGrossDomesticProduct(GDP).economistsfocuson national import and export figures, interest rates, corporate profits and unemployment rates. And, for the most part, that information is provided at a provincial and/ornationallevel.

that’snotquitethecasewithmyPerthHuron.Alongwithcomparators from ontario and Canada, the online data tool also houses lots of local urban and rural data about our communities – provided by trusted organizations and government agencies in our own backyard.

In 2017 the Melanson Family Fund provided seed funding tohelpgetthemyPerthHuroninitiativeupofftheground.“thisisanimportantresourceforourcommunity– it is set to help us all make more informed decisions

about where there are needs and where we should focus ourtimeandmoney,”sharestomMelanson.“Iampleasedthat we were able to provide initial funding for this initiative.”

“Imaginehavingaccesstoatoolthatfeaturescurrent,local data from providers such as hospitals, health units, socialservices,governmentandnon-profitorganizationswhileofferinginter-organizationaldatasharingandmappingfeatures,”notesSusannaReid,DirectoroftheSRPC.“Imaginealso,identifyingwherewearedoingwell,discovering emerging trends and challenging areas, while uncovering what makes our community unique – that’s whatmyPerthHuronis.”


theLocalCommunityFoodCentre(LCFC)wantseveryone to have access to fresh, local food. the Canada 150Granthelpedthisorganizationgetonestepcloserto realizing this goal by funding a 10,000 square foot communitygardenspaceand“edibleforest”inDufferinPark (stratford) filled with fresh produce representing Canada’s heritage. In the spirit of cooperation and solidarity,the150CommemorativeGardenallowedcommunity members to come together to grow fresh, healthy food that helped signify Canada’s history and

culture.“thisissomethingthe whole community can be proud of,” notes Debra swan, executive Director.“thecommunitygarden has brought our community together. It has helped families become more food secure, and in doing so, allowed them to contribute to strengthening our community’s food security

and social capital.”

to local resident sean, the garden meant so much more. Finding it challenging to feed his growing family of six, he often travelled with his wife and children to various communitymealsthroughoutStratford.However,whenhediscoveredtheLCFCandallithadtooffer,theCentrebecame like a second home. sean did not hesitate to offer his assistance to help build the garden and later becomeafoodgrower.“Bytheendoftheseason,we had harvested upwards of 80 pounds of fresh, healthy food for our family for the entire summer,” adds sean. “ourliveshavechangedbecauseofthiscommunitygarden experience.”

this past year marked Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation. to celebrate this important milestone, the sPCF partnered with Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) to provide local grants to help bring Canadian citizens together and build a greater sense of belonging through projects connected to the country’s sesquicentennial. For this purpose, CFC created the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th-acollaborativeeffortseededbytheGovernmentofCanadaandextraordinaryleadersfromcoasttocoasttocoastwithmatchingfundingfromCanada’s191communityfoundations, including the sPCF.

More than 2,100 projects across the country were approved through the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th and the sPCF is proud to report on four local projects that received funding through this initiative.

Whatdoes“heritage”meantoyou?thatquestionwasaskedofmanylantern-makingworkshopparticipantsinpreparationforStratford’sFirstAnnualLanternParadehosted by Playmakers! theatre school. the 21 workshops were offered at venues across the city. All in all, over 800 individuals participated in the inclusive approach to lantern making – giving people of all ages, nationalities and abilities an opportunity to create their own lantern, reflecting images that they felt represented Canada’s heritage.

Despitetherain,over220peopleattendedtheLanternParade,walkingalongtheAvonRiverfromthetourismBoothtoGalleryStratford,celebratingCanada’sheritageand diversity through the lanterns they had produced. the entertainment along the parade route and at the receptionatGalleryStratfordalsoreflectedCanada’sdiversity, featuring traditional east Coast step dancing, QuebecandontariofiddlingandArabicsingingtohelpwelcome syrian families that recently moved to the area. “theworkshopsandparadewereanoverwhelmingsuccess bringing together so many community members,” statesSusanKennedy,theevent’sorganizer.

theStratfordPerthHeritageFoundationhostedtheirannualPioneerDaysprogrammingthispastJuneinPertheastattheFryfogeltavern,a19th century stagecoach stop and resting place for incoming settlers to the Canada Company’sHurontract.theeducationalprogrammingfeatured elementary school students dressing up in period costumes to partake in a wide range of pioneer activities and experiences intended to stimulate interest in local history, heritage and early days of settlement in Perth County.

AlsosharingabitoflocalhistorywereJohnKastner,GeneralManager of the stratford Perth Museum and Amy Cubberley, Curator of the st. Marys Museum. Both organizations also

received Community Foundation grants and shared details about the impact those grants made in facilitating their programming.

this past november, the stratford Perth Community Foundation kicked off the final smart & Caring Community Funds in Perth east and West Perth. Smart & Caring Community Funds were also established in stratford and north Perth in 2015andSt.MarysandPerthSouthin2016.thegoalofthethree-yearSmart & Caring Initiative was for each of the six municipalities served by the Community Foundation to have access to their own sustainable funding resource that respondedtotheever-changingneedsofitscommunity.AndtheCommunityFoundationhasmetthatgoal–allthanks to our generous donors!

Because of caring individuals, businesses and organizations, close to $500,000 has been raised in the past three years through this initiative. these dollars have been invested and a portion of the income earned is now providing funding for local charities and organizations. thank you to all who have donated to date. PAVInGtHeRoADFoRABetteRFutuReInJuneof2017,thePerthCountyRoadSuperintendentsAssociation(PCRSA),inpartnershipwiththeAssociationofontarioRoadSupervisors,hostedtheAnnualMunicipalPublicWorkstradeShow.thetwo-dayevent,the largest of its kind in ontario, welcomed between 200 and 300 public works products and services exhibitors and upwards of 2,000 attendees.

“Weknewearlyonthatwewouldgeneratesomerevenuefrom the tradeshow so we decided that we would donate those profits back into the communities where we work andserve,”sharesJohnMcClelland,DirectorofPublicWorksforPerthCountyandamemberofthePCRSA.“thatwasveryimportanttoourmembershipandpublicworks staff.”

It took two years to prepare for the tradeshow and the planning paid off as the Association brought in more than $60,000, after expenses. It’s safe to say that McClelland and his event committee were extremely pleased with the results.

thePCRSAchosetheCommunityFoundationastheirvehicle for giving and, after discussions, decided to divide

their $60,884.25 contribution evenly amongst the four Perth County Smart & Caring Community Funds – helping ensure that there are sustainable funding resources in Pertheast,PerthSouth,WestPerthandnorthPerth.“Welove that the four Smart & Caring Community Funds are specific to building vital communities in Perth County – that was a great fit for what we had hoped to accomplish with our donation,” adds Bill Wilson, operations Coordinator, Perth east township.

thePCRSA’sdonationhasbeenpooledandinvestedwith all of the Community Foundation’s endowment funds and annually proceeds will provide support to each municipality within Perth County, providing a legacy of the Association’s generosity, forever.

Part of the beauty of the initiative is that it doesn’t have tocostacent.Holdingadooropen,wordsofthanksandencouragement, telling someone they’ve done a good job – these are the acts that citizens are asked to ‘pay forward’.

the evening also marked 16 years to the day that local businessman Bo sibold passed away. Bo was a big supporter of the community and it was his $250,000 bequest that helped establish the stratford Perth Community Foundation. since that time, the Community Foundation’s assets have grown to 17 times that amount and the sPCF has granted over three times that amount back into our communities. Bo’s gift helped to establish a legacy and continues to supportourcommunities’prioritiesandever-changingneeds.

InJune2017,alongwiththehelpofseverallocalorganizations (see list below), the stratford Perth CommunityFoundation(SPCF)hosteditsinauguralVitalConversation in stratford. organizers knew that the topic, ‘sense of belonging’, is a fundamental human need – just like food or shelter – and is essential to our sense of happinessandwell-being.

the important community conversation took place inconjunctionwiththeSocialResearch&PlanningCouncil(SRPC)Perth-Huron’slaunchoftheirnewreport,‘embracingDiversity,newcomerexperiencesinHuronand Perth Counties.’

VitalConversationattendeeswereledonanexplorationof community connection through large and small group discussion. the goal was to identify local priorities with areas for improvement and opportunities for civic action. ResultsfromthepostStratfordPerthVitalConversationssurvey indicated that event participants were most interested in pursuing actionable items that affected sense of belonging for youth. the full report is available on the sPCF website.

SincehostingVitalConversations,theCommunityFoundation has worked with some local organizations to provide funding for initiatives making a difference in the areas indicated in the final report. the sPCF will host a follow-upStratfordPerthVitalConversationfocusingon‘Connecting Youth in our Community’ in the fall of 2018.

Other 2017 Vital Conversations partners included: University of Waterloo’s Community, Health, Environment, Communications (CHEC) Initiative, Stratford Perth YMCA, Stratford Public Library, University of Waterloo Stratford Campus, United Way Perth-Huron, Powernoodle, Choices for Change, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and Facile Perth.

over the last three years, we have grown our endowment byalmost60%andthroughourpartnershipwiththeLCF,have seen returns on those investments ranging from 3.22%in2015to9.62%in2017.

Did you Know? surplus income from our Funds is allowed to accumulate as undistributed income from years in which investment returns exceed expenditures (grants and administration fees). this surplus is used to build a two year reserve to be used in years in which investment revenueisnotsufficienttomeettheCRAdisbursementquotarequirement(3.5%).

the Community Foundation distributes grants to all corners of the community in arts and culture, education, health, social services and the environment.

on october 17, 2017 the world lost a musician, poet and aCanadianiconwhenGordDownieofthetragicallyHippassed away from glioblastoma, a rare, aggressive form of brain cancer.

Blair Babcock, owner of the stratford coffee roastery to Bean or not to Bean and local musician, knows about thisdiseasealltoowell.Hisfather,LarryBabcock,passedaway from the same form of cancer almost 10 years ago to the day that Downie passed.

AfterGord’sdeath,BlairandhiswifeChristy,decidedit was time to sell one of their prized possessions, a Bill Barilko hockey card signed by all members of the tragicallyHip.thecard,whichinspiredtheHip’s“FiftyMission Cap,” was put up on eBay and, over the course of a few days of local and national coverage, sold for $6,240.

Blair and Christy had already planned on donating the money to charity and decided to split the earnings betweenthreecharitableorganizations,theLarryBabcockMemorialFundheldattheChatham-KentCommunity Foundation, the Stratford Smart & Caring Community Fund held at the stratford Perth Community FoundationandtheGordDownieFundforBrainCancer

ResearchattheSunnybrookFoundation.eachCommunityFoundationreceived45%of the proceeds and the sunnybrook Foundation received theremaining10%.

“Ithoughtthiswouldbeagreatwaytopaytributetoboth my dad and Downie,” said Blair.
