Mangrove Action Project2017 Children’s Art Calendar

Thank you for supporting Mangrove Action Project as we celebrate MAP’s ongoing efforts to conserve and restore the world’s mangrove forest wetlands. This year, we commemorate those efforts via this edition of inspiring children’s art in MAP’s 16th annual Children’s Mangrove Art Contest Calendar for 2017.

Each Year MAP invites teachers and their students from around the globe to participate in an international contest. They learn through their participation about the incredible beauty and biodiversity of the

mangroves, and the students’ attempts to depict through their art what they have experienced on field trips to mangroves and in classroom studies. Children from 12 nations entered our contest by answering a simple, but intriguing question: “What do the mangroves mean to my community and myself?”

As usual, it was difficult to choose from among the beautifully crafted works of children’s art. Around 3000 children participated from a multitude of schools located in nations containing mangroves.

Through the publication and distribution of these beautiful calendars, MAP recognizes the great accomplishment of these young artists. We wish to thank each child,

their teachers and the associate non-governmental organizations that participated and promoted the project in schools during 2016. Their good work and dedicated efforts have helped produce yet another attractive calendar for yet another “Mangrove Year!”

Thank You For Your Support!

There are approximately 80 species of mangrove trees, all with varying degrees of tolerance to tidal flooding, soil salinity, and nutrient availability

About Mangrove Action Project

Mangrove Action Project (MAP) was founded in 1992 upon the basic principles that MAP still abides by today:

MAP’s Mission: Partnering with mangrove forest communities, grassroots NGOs, researchers and local governments to conserve and restore mangrove forests and related coastal ecosystems, while promoting community-based sustainable management of coastal resources.

MAP spotlights the continuing decline in mangrove forests worldwide, reported at a rate of 1-2% annually, which leaves less than half the original forest remaining! MAP works to reverse this dangerous trend via a five-pronged approach to long-term mangrove conservation:

Education – MAP’s Mangrove Curriculum is now in schools in Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia and Asia. This 300+ page curriculum is being adapted to each country’s local conditions, translated and introduced through carefully planned Teacher Training workshops.

Networking - MAP’s global network involves over 500 NGOs & 350 scientists from 60 nations, partnering with many local international grassroots organizations and communities.

Restoration and Conservation - MAP has several programs involving Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) in the global South, which emphasize the importance of restoring the hydrology to allow natural reseeding to occur, which is vital for restoring the full biodiversity and resilience of the mangrove ecosystem over time.

Advocacy - MAP’s ongoing public awareness and outreach campaigns include the Question Your Shrimp Consumer/ Markets Campaign and several local collaborative efforts to halt mangrove loss in the Global South.

Sustainable Community-based Development - MAP focuses on teaching effective and sustainable ways to utilize mangrove forest ecosystems, as well as their associated coral reefs and seagrass beds through our CBEMR and other workshops. This training provides sets of alternative, locally adaptable, and sustainable economic development options for mangrove forests. The program helps foster informal education programs and add value to natural resources, which if used sustainably can supplement local income and sustenance

Last year, Mangrove Action Day was officially recognized by UNESCO as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. UNESCO underlined the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem, providing by virtue of their existence, biomass and productivity substantial benefits to human beings, providing forestry, fishery goods and services as well as contributing to the protection of the coastline and being particularly relevant in terms of mitigation of the effects of climate change and food security for local communities.”

Funds from the sale of these calendars will be used to help restore and conserve mangrove tidal forests, as well as raise awareness of the importance of mangroves for the protection of coastal areas from erosion, storm surges and hurricanes. Mangroves also play a vital role in mitigating the effects of sea level rise and climate change.
