District Programs are open to all Birmingham City School (BCS) students within the designated grade span. Local Program sites are only open to BCS students enrolled in that particular school.

Introduction: Birmingham City Schools offers its students many opportunities for enrichment and acceleration during the summer months. Offerings for students include

promotional programs, advanced placement preparatory programs, laboratory based science programs, recreational programs, special needs programs, grade level and

home-to-school bridge programs, ESL/ELL, and many more. Please contact the various departments for additional information.

Registration: June 1 Teacher Professional Development 7:45 am 3:15 pm (½ orientation, ½ summer school site) June 2 All students (No registration after June 5) Tuition is due upon registration. The primary focus area of “Hello School” will be social-emotional awareness, which is the foundation for all learning. Middle students will engage in hands-on learning activities in writing, social sciences, and math. Mathematics – use creativity in problem-based projects, games, manipulatives, and technology, while developing key academic skills, knowledge and enhance critical thinking skills Social Sciences – read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from given situations; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions; analyze, evaluate, and differentiate primary and secondary sources. Writing – extended practice in preparing content, organization, structure, and presentation of papers in three subgenres: reflective narrative, information/expository, and argumentative writing. Opportunities to read, listen to, annotate, and discuss published models; Socratic Circle strategy will be used for editing before final presentations; ACT Writing rubrics will be used to assess the quality of students’ papers, and technology is required to complete final presentation/project for the summer. P. E. - students will participate in structured recreational sports fostering, sportsmanship, creativity and fun.

This camp is designed to support students in mastering advanced writing skills. Daily activities will center on the CCRS standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Students will:

• Engage in writing that expresses judgments, focuses on various topics, develops and organizes ideas, and uses oral and written language.

• Read nonfiction texts as a springboard for writing.

• Engage in peer reviews, writing for college scholarships, and timed writing assignments that help build capacity for writing.

Guest speakers and field trips are planned to enhance students’ experiences and to broaden and expand their knowledge.

An accelerated academic program designed to provide our students with tools needed to successfully move to 8th or 9th grade. Students and their parents will become aware of all services available in our district through seminars that focus on academic support. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND THE ENTIRE SUMMER SESSION. The ESL Summer Program will be offered to Spanish-speaking ELs. Priority will be given to newcomers (newly arrived in the US) and to students scoring below 3.0 on the WIDA Access Test for ELs. Second order of priority for ELs who need academic support in order to continue to progress sufficiently at the next grade level. There will be cultural and artistic activities. Transportation will be available for students across the district.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Camp will introduce selected JROTC Cadets to STEM career opportunities. The cadets will:

• be provided direct exposure to college atmosphere, STEM curriculum, and STEM- related worksites

• will strive for excellence in all areas

• will continue their education beyond high school pursue STEM- related careers

Cadets must be rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors; have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale; must be of a strong moral and ethical character; be in good standing in JROTC; must be recommended by the SAI (20 cadets from Birmingham will be selected)
