2017 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska All-State Music Festival 1

Welcome to the 2017 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska All-State High School Music Festival.

Our Mission Statement: “The existence of this Music Festival enables outstanding high school musicians to participate as members of a select statewide band, choral or orchestra music ensemble and promotes the highest stan-dards of musicianship. It is the goal of this activity to foster and inspire technical achievement, aesthetic un-derstanding, and critical listening skills that allow for the culmination of a final creative musical performance of the highest artistic level.”

Beginning with 858 individual auditions from 51 schools throughout the State of Alaska, the 345 students that you will see and hear this evening represent the finest of Alaska’s young musicians. These accomplished young students, taught by 77 dedicated and equally capable school music di-rectors, have gathered for three days of intense rehearsals with four outstanding professional con-ductors to provide this final concert for you. What a treat you have in store!

It is no small task when trying to gather the partici-pants and to coordinate this weekend’s rehearsals and concert. Many, many thanks go to those who have been involved in the process of getting these students from that first recording session to the stage of West Anchorage High School Auditorium

in Anchorage, Alaska. Each of these stu-dents have been encouraged by a host

of parents, music directors, private music teachers, adjudicators, peers, siblings, school administrations and school boards who all realize the power and influence that quality

music can have in a young person’s life. They have taken that extra effort

to insure that this musical experience can continue for yet another generation of young

musicians by presenting this concert this evening.

Thank you, thank you!

MUSIC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

ASAA seeks volunteers to assist the ASAA MUSIC

COORDINATOR with the two state music festivals

held each year.

The ALL-STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL occurs during the

third week in November. This festival showcases the finest of Alaskan musicians in four performing groups-the All-

State Band, the All-State Mixed Choir, the All-State Orchestra and the All-State Treble Choir

who perform in a Gala Concert after three days of

intensive rehearsals with national conductors.

The STATE SOLO and ENSEMBLE MUSIC FESTIVAL

occurs the weekend after the first Sunday in May. This festival provides an

opportunity for outstanding musicians who have received

superior ratings at their individual regional music festivals to come to a state

level music festival for further competition. One student

from each musical category is then selected to perform

in a Command Performance Concert at the end of the

festival.

Volunteers are needed for: adjudicators, accompanists,

preparing packets for directors and students, room and door monitors, festival

and concert set-up.

To volunteer or for more information, please contact Cam Bohman, ASAA Music

Coordinator, at ASAA 563-3723, or at

www.asaa.org

NICOLE LAMARTINE

Dr. Nicole Lamartine became Director of Choral Activities at the University of Wyoming in 2008. She conducts the Collegiate Chorale, The UW Singing Statesmen, advises the male a cappella Happy Jacks, and teaches conducting and applied voice.

Under her leadership, choirs of the University of Wyoming have been invited to perform at the 2017, 2015 and 2011 NW National Association for Music Education (NAfME) conferences, the 2012 Northwest American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conference, and at the 2011 National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO) national conference. The UW Collegiate Chorale is the only choir invited from the US to compete in the 2017 Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain.

Her choirs at the University of Wyoming have enjoyed premiere performances and recordings of music by Pulitzer Prize and Grammy-winning composer Jennifer Higdon, Forrest Pierce, John Muehleisen, Gabriela Lena Frank, Libby Larsen, and Craig Hella Johnson.

She is in demand as a conductor and clinician across the US, China, Europe, and the Middle East. Recent conducting engagements include the 2014 DoDDS All-Europe Honor Choir in Wiesbaden, Germany, and All-State choirs in Washington, Montana, and Wyoming.

Lamartine is becoming a resource for men’s choir singing, having led The UW Singing Statesmen to prominence with their NW-ACDA and NW-NAfME performances and with her research on female leaders of male choirs. In addition to the 2017 Oregon All-State Men’s Choir, she conducted the 2014 NW ACDA Men’s Honor Choir in Seattle and most recently, the 2017 Association for Music in International Schools Men’s Honor Choir in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Lamartine has presented her research on the voice, conducting men’s choirs, and anatomy for conductors at national and regional conferences of ACDA, the National Collegiate Choral Organization, College Music Society, National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the National Association for Music Education. In 2016, she was selected to participate in a 6-day Human Dissection course to study human anatomy.

As a professional vocal musician, Lamartine has sung as a regular member of the Grammy®-nominated Conspirare, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, and the Colorado Bach Ensemble.

In 2014, Dr. Lamartine was chosen as one of seven conductors from the US to participate in the International Conductor Exchange program to China. She travelled to Beijing to conduct choirs and present conducting and vocal masterclasses with students from China Conservatory. She travelled there again in 2016, maintaining a teaching relationship with the Conservatory and other choral professionals throughout Beijing.

In service to the American Choral Directors association, she has acted as Wyoming ACDA President, as chair of the 2011 National ACDA Women’s Choir and as co-chair of the 2009 National ACDA Collegiate Chamber Choir. Currently, she serves as President of the Northwest division.

PATRICK M. FORTNEY

Dr. Patrick Fortney is Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences at Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska, where he also serves as an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands. Known for his passionate conducting style, Fortney brings not only his 32 years of musical experience to the stage, but also his commitment to the music, performers, and audience who share the experience.

Whether he is conducting band or boogying with the jazz band, Fortney works to move instrumental music out of the shadows, bringing renewed interest and engagement to band music through concerts, campus events, and special occasions. His groups often perform at community events, collaborate with other ensembles, and volunteer their time.

In his seventeenth year as music director and conductor of the Lincoln Community Concert Band, Fortney continues to maintain a commitment to life-long musical involvement through the amateur group. He also served as music director and conductor of the Lincoln Civic Orchestra, Great Plains Music Society, the Union College Chamber Orchestra.

A proponent of new music, Fortney has commissioned and conducted works by noted composers Loris Chobanian, Steve Bryant, William Ballenger, Rusty Banks, Randall Snyder, and Alfred Reed, who wrote and dedicated his Twelfth Night (A Musical Masque After Shakespeare) to him.

A frequent wind band/orchestra adjudicator and clinician, he has conducted groups throughout the United States and Australia. As an active researcher, he has presented at regional and national meetings and published in the major music education journals.

Prior to joining the Department of Music at PSC, Fortney served as director of instrumental studies at Nebraska Wesleyan University and director of music education at Ohio Wesleyan University. He taught at the University of Miami, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and public and private schools in Florida and Nebraska.

Fortney’s degrees include a doctorate in music education from the University of Miami where he studied with Nicholas DeCarbo and Alfred Reed, serving as Reed’s rehearsal assistant. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Education/Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a music education emphasis.

As a tubist he has studied with Vernon Forbes, Craig Fuller, and John Olah, and played professionally with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and Nebraska Chamber Orchestra. He is also a bassist and is comfortable in a variety of styles, from rock to jazz.

Fortney has worked in the classical world with such notable artists as Nathaniel Rosen, Richard Stoltzman, Alicia de Larrocha, and Margret Hillis; George Shearing, Gary Burton, and Kathy Kosins in the jazz world; and blues greats, Magic Slim and Johnny Rawls.

As comfortable off the podium as he is on, Fortney can often be found attending the symphony, a rock concert, or a blues festival. When it is time to slow down, he is likely sitting around a campfire with his family or watching classic Batman and Star Trek.
