Letter from the PrincipalDear Friends of Saint Joseph High School,

On January 9, 2018, in front of a packed house for our boys’ and girls’ basketball games against Marian High School, we dedicated our main gym at 453 N. Notre Dame Avenue as Alumni Gymnasium. What a night to remember as another tradition from 1441 was carried forward. With so many alumni present, it was obvious, Once an Indian, Always an Indian! Last March, our Advancement Office launched our GoFundMe campaign to name our main gymnasium in honor of the thousands of Saint Joe alumni. Our goal to raise $250,000 was accomplished. The generosity of so many of our alumni and current faculty and staff raised the necessary monies to achieve our goal. As I dedicated the new Alumni Gym, many wonderful memories from 1441 came flooding

through my mind: all school Masses, pep assemblies, basketball games, welcome home rallies for our State Champions, and wrestling matches to name a few. My sons were involved in so many of those activities and each is proud to own a piece of that old gym floor. I am certain that the new Alumni Gym will provide just as many treasured memories to new and future alumni. I still remember walking through the doors at 453 six years ago and the incredible feeling I had as I prepared to welcome our students to their new home on August 30, 2012. Until they arrived, it was simply a new building. After that first day, it became a home for the Saint Joe family. I am still overwhelmed when

I think of the tremendous generosity of all our donors who made Forward in Faith a success. This same generosity continues today. I am grateful for the support each of you gives to our mission with your contributions to so many of our campaigns, including the SGONEI, the Fund for Saint Joseph, GoFundMe for Alumni Gymnasium, and our annual auctions. We are transforming our students in heart and mind each day because your gifts enable our programs to sustain a level of excellence for our students. Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. Our students do all four every day and your support enables our students to experience a Catholic education. Truly, we are blessed because of your tireless efforts to assist us as we carry out our mission. God calls… the Saint Joseph family answers!

    Saint Joseph, pray for us!

    Susan Richter

Scholarship Granting Organization of Northeast Indiana (SGONEI) The Indiana Scholarship Tax Credit Program allows donors to contribute to certified Scholarship Granting Organizations (or SGOs) so that these SGOs can provide eligible lower income families with scholarships to attend a quality Catholic institution that best suits their children’s needs. As a donor (small business, corporate, and individual) to our Scholarship Granting Organization of Northeast Indiana, Inc. (SGONEI), you can receive an Indiana State tax credit equal to 50% of the amount given, in addition to the federal tax deduction for a charitable contribution. There is no size limitation on donations. In the 2017-2018 school year, Saint Joseph High School awarded 67 students a total of $138,399 of SGO funds averaging $2,066 per student. Throughout the construction of the new school building, donors were offered naming opportunities. No donor put their name on the main gymnasium and in March of 2017, we launched the Alumni Gym Campaign. This cam-paign gave us the opportunity to name the gym after all the amazing generations that competed, celebrated, and donat-ed to the mission of Saint Joseph High School for the past sixty-four years. The Alumni Gym Campaign was a huge success, and we were able to raise $250,000 in a few short months. Thank you to the more than 170 generous donors who made this amazing naming opportunity a reality.

By Henry ChandlerAlumni Coordinator Alumni activities in 2017 revolved around class reunions. From May through October, Saint Joe grads gathered at a variety of venues to celebrate accomplishments, share memories, and renew friendships. The classes of ’67, ’72, ’77, ’82, ’92, and ’07 spent time reminiscing with their classmates. On June 7 and November 2, deceased alumni of Saint Joseph High School and its predecessor schools were remembered at an Alumni Memorial Masses in the Chapel of Saint Joseph. Chaplain Father Terry Coonan celebrated the Masses assisted by school Sacristan Patricia LeGuern. Names of the deceased alumni were on display for those attending the Masses. Former Saint Joe athletes and coaches who have been inducted into various Indiana High School Athletic Halls of Fame were honored at halftime of the September 29 varsity football game vs. Mishawaka. In attendance were Hall of Fame members Lisa Hoffman Oleksak, Craig Watcke, Phil Teegarden, Tom Abernethy, John Laskowski, Father Walter Bly, Melissa Standley James, Chip O’Neil, Frank Johnson, and Tom Van Meter. Please keep the Alumni Office informed of changes in address, the passing of alumni, and alumni news by contacting Alumni Coordinator Henry Chandler via email at [email protected] or phone at 574-234-2904 ext. 547.

Strategic Plan UpdateFacilities: - Chaired by Al ScottObjective 1: Properly maintain the existing campus and plan proactively for future needs.• As additional years of occupancy occur in the new facility, historical operating expense data should continue to be used to develop the annual

utility and maintenance budgets.• Staffing levels should be reviewed on a regular basis to assure staff members are qualified to perform routine maintenance which will extend

the life of the building and serviceable equipment. Part-time employment will need to continue to meet the demand during the summer months.

    • The Facilities Committee should remain engaged and available to review any proposal for new and/or extend long-term service/maintenance contracts.

    • The Facilities Committee should continue to update the one-time maintenance worksheet as new items are identified or current line items are completed. This is arguably the most useful tool to help plan for future capital expenditures.

    • The Facilities Committee will provide information as needed to help the Finance Committee develop an ongoing funding strategy to deal with future one-time or on-going maintenance capital expenditures.

Objective 2: Complete a comprehensive campus expansion plan that incorporates aspects of student safety, potential campus expansion, and development of current assets.• One of the goals of the Strategic Plan was to acquire additional properties adjacent to campus as they become available. However, based on

the current priority to retire our building debt, the committee recommended that minimal improvements be considered for the areas west of campus until such time adequate funding is available to successfully develop the area.

    • Following the debt retirement and the development of a comprehensive master plan for the west edge of campus, additional parking is the most immediate need. The idea to vacate both St. Louis Blvd. and Madison Street can be reassessed in the future. The congestion, problems with mobility, and additional maintenance cost of this decision make it very unlikely at this time.

    • The North Athletic Fields development is an ongoing process as funds become available. The construction of the softball field, dugouts, and site access routes has been successful. * The study to determine if the current water pressure is sufficient to feed additional development for a future press box and concession building at softball is complete, as well as the existing sewer line to handle the additional waste flow. The study concluded new water and sewer lines should be installed before any further development.

Stewardship: - Chaired by Dan LuckObjective 1: Establish annual budgets and annual processes that result in positive new income for Saint Joseph High School, as well as annual positive net cash flow, and begin to build an appropriate capital fund reserve.• The 2016-2017 budget was approved with a 3.5% tuition increase. The increase was sufficient to meet annual operating expenditures. The

2017-2018 tuition is also set at 3.5% to accommodate increases in salaries as well as other major increases.• We slowly continue to improve Saint Joseph High School cash flow as well as gaining on depreciation expense. • A small capital fund reserve has been established and contributed towards each year for future capital demands.

Objective 2: Finish the Forward in Faith Campaign effort by raising an additional $3 million to cover the gap between expected campaign revenue and campaign debt obligations.• Families and business partners of SJHS continue to be established and are strategically approached regarding Campaign donations.• In March, a final push to finish the Forward in Faith Campaign was made by approaching new members of the SJHS Commuity and

reapproaching previous donors. The result of the Forward in Faith Finale was $1,100,000 in new pledges.

Objective 3: Continue to grow Partners in Pride in both participants and revenue to more fully support the SJHS operating budget.• The Development Committee meets regularly to discuss strategic ideas for fundraising including the Fund for Saint Joseph. A strategic plan

is developed annually to meet the needs of the operating budget.• Fundraisers, committees, marketing communications, alumni relations, and the Internet are all various tools utilized to improve knowledge

for increased support for SJHS. • Several strategies pertaining to Advancement and Marketing are being implemented to help increase the participation and revenue to support

    the SJHS operating budget.

Objective 4: Maximize impact of all financial aid efforts via SGO (Scholarship Granting Organization) and School Choice Scholarship Program.• SGO donations continue to increase as SJHS continues to raise awareness of SGOs and the state tax benefits of giving to an SGO. SGOs

continue to grow and help many families in need of tuition assistance.• The School Choice Scholarship Program continues to climb in numbers as parents learn about the program and how it can help them with

tuition assistance.• Various communication methods as well as Open House, Back to School Night, and New Parents’ Meeting are used to educate parents about

the benefits of the SGO and School Choice Scholarship programs.

Marketing: Chaired by Maria HardingObjective 1: Enhance and sustain communications regarding Saint Joseph High School to current families, alumni, prospective families, and the community-at-large to further develop the brand and image of Saint Joseph High School.

  • Page 12 | 2017 Annual Report

    • Online monthly newsletter for prospective families, a monthly newsletter for alumni, and bi-monthly “Soundings” newsletter for families provide important communication to various constituencies.

    • Active Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram social media accounts continue to tell the Saint Joe story.• Regular advertising, coverage with local media, radio, and geofencing.• SJHS Gospel Reflection involves an opt-in email program that shares nuggets of faith developed to enhance students and parents spiritually.• Creation of a Spanish language page called “Boletin” on the school website. It includes updates of the bi-monthly newsletter translated by our

Latino Outreach Liaison Cristina Ruvalcaba.• The Marketing Committee continues with the conceptual development of a marketing strategy to show the diversity of SJHS student body,

activities, and faith community.• SJHS School App ties various informational/communication modules for the convenience of current parents, students, staff, and alumni.

Objective 2: Create annual community building and fundraising events to engage the alumni, current families, prospective families, and community-at-large.• Alumni tailgate during football season and alumni memorial Mass twice a year.• Tailgate in the fall, an invitation to spring musical, and Mass with prospective families.• Several events were held during the year such as Back to School Night, Open House, Alumni Gym Dedication, SGO fundraiser, and Annual

Fund fundraiser reaching out to a wider audience.

Objective 3: Develop ways to provide parent education about the true cost of a Saint Joseph High School education.• This message will continue to be conveyed to the SJHS community by using multiple communications and marketing channels.

Objective 4: Actively engage surrounding neighborhoods.• Information distributed through social media sites, inclusion on the St. Joseph County Chamber website, Downtown South Bend App.,

Facebook pages of grade schools and neighborhood communities.• Posters promoting SJHS distributed at community libraries and downtown South Bend business.• Joy of Saint Joe Day of Service - All students, faculty, staff, and parent volunteers went out into the community.

Program Excellence: Chaired by Mary HardingObjective 1: Define “academic success” at Saint Joseph High School.• Block scheduling was implemented in the 2017-2018 school year. There are many advantages with the block schedule. The administration

plans to use the new flex period, or J Block, to offer students extra academic support. In addition, the J Block will allow the student body to attend presentations from speakers on a variety of topics.

    • For the past three years, a survey was distributed to the graduate class to gather information about how their SJHS education prepared them for college and life. Results include 89.4% of the graduates who responded felt that their academic preparation for college was good to excellent and 60.5% said it was excellent.

    • Virtually all SJHS graduates attend college. In addition, SJHS uses PSAT, SAT, ACT, and ISTEP results to evaluate student readiness for college and career opportunities.

    • The school provides information about alternative websites and resources to assist in preparation for the students’ various standadized tests.• SJHS received a three year grant to implement two courses (Biomedical and Engineering) for Project Lead the Way.• The parent survey was completed in late October. A total of 178 responses were received. The committee noted trends in three areas that

require action by the administration. An action plan will continue as part of the committee’s agenda.

Objective 2: Provide a technology-rich environment throughout the student’s high school career.• The committee believes the Technology Committee has evaluated, and must continue to evaluate, emerging technologies each year as part of

the process to order devices for the incoming freshmen class.• The annual survey from the Class 2016 again suggests that the 1:1 laptop program has helped. Results include 76.4% of the students stated

they optimized the used of their laptops and 71% of the students felt they were encouraged to learn and utilize technology effectively including 47.4% who felt “well prepared.”

    • The Class of 2016 spent four years in the new building with individual laptops; the survey suggests the 1:1 laptop program prepared recent graduates for college-level work, empowered our graduates to do their own learning, and enhanced their technology and communication skills.

Objective 3: Challenge all students to meet their fullest potential.• SJHS considers the state standards to be the minimum standards for education. The Curriculum Committee reviews one department each

academic year and agrees these reviews need to continue each year.• A Diocesan-wide curriculum has been developed for courses in each department. Teacher leaders have met and established a unit outline

for each course. State standards are used as the base for the curriculum for each course, and the departments build on that to establish and enhance our curriculum.

    • Each year, as a department is scheduled for textbook adoption, courses are evaluated and reviewed. Any recommended changes in courses are referred to the Curriculum Committee for approval. For the 2017-2018 year, textbook adoption included health, business, fine arts, and theology.

    • SJHS received a three-year grant to bring two sciences, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs to SJHS. Starting with the 2016-2017 school year, SJHS offers four-year curriculums in Biomedical Science and Engineering from Project Lead The Way (PLTW).

    • The Curriculum Committee is adding several dual credit courses for students in conjunction with Ivy Tech and IU.

Objective 4: Sustain full enrollment with balanced classes.• The creation of the “Outreach and Engagement Committee” with a dual purpose of attracting and retaining students.• Monitor the progress of all students while specifically evaluating academic progress, co-curricular involvement, service, attendance, and

parental involvement as families transition into SJHS.

  • 2017 Annual Report | Page 13

    • A Latino Outreach Liaison and a paraprofessional were expanded to full-time status to help bridge the language and cultural barriers as well as learning strategies for those who need additional support.

    • The WIDA assessment on English proficiency continues to be given based on a student s home language survey results. An overall score of 5 is necessary for proficiency.

    • The block schedule has fewer daily classes and gives students more time to prepare homework for the next day.

Catholic Identity: Chaired by Deacon Mel TardyObjective 1: Sustain a fully integrated Catholic culture at Saint Joseph High School.• To improve Catholic identity at SJHS, everyone has to own Catholic identity.• School Masses, retreats, and services activities remain critical efforts in sustaining a fully integrated culture at SJHS.• Committee noted that parents and faculty are integral to Catholic Identity: faith starts at home and parents, as well as faculty, need to be

partners with SJHS in developing Catholic Identity.• Pastoral Ministry invites all Saint Joseph families to attend all-school Masses.

Objective 2: Prepare students for college and future challenges to their faith.• The Committee administered a survey asking 16 questions pertaining to Catholic identity, personal experiences, and home environment

while at SJHS. The objective is to identify significant factors that contribute to the Catholic identity of students and identify any significant trends at SJHS.

    • The study also revealed an opportunity to further discuss with students issues they are passionate, about such as service hours, as well as wanting to learn more about world religions.

    • Information for Growth was another survey to support adult faith formation. This survey was taken on-line anonymously by faculty and staff. The survey is a good starting point for growth.

    • Bishops Rhoades mandates the use of USCCB Framework as the Theology curriculum. The committee is satisfied with the curriculum and believes it prepares students to engage the world in a sense of wisdom, courage, justice, and global awareness.

Objective 3: Encourage and purposefully integrate opportunities for Christian service.• SJHS emphasis still remains on all students completing the Christian service requirement. The committee feels the service requirement

should remain as twenty hours per year. Christian service opportunities continue to increase for students. Daily announcements are made and encourage students to answer God’s call to serve with joy.

    • All student retreats contain a combination of games, talks, activities, small group discussion, individual reflection, and prayer. These retreats are lead by the Pastoral Ministry team with talks given by pastoral ministers, teachers, graduates and individuals from the larger community.

    • Annual service camps will continue as a means to welcome freshmen and provide the opportunity to serve our local community organizations.

Faculty/ Staff Excellence: Chaired by Donna LambertiObjective 1 – Refine faculty/staff evaluation process to ensure regular and productive feedback.• The RISE evaluation tool, as created and provided by the Diocese of Fort Wayne, was effectively implemented and sufficient for evaluating

faculty.• Feedback from faculty on RISE and peer evaluations was reviewed. No changes to the RISE evaluation or process were proposed.• End of course student assessment of faculty was implemented in the fall semester of 2016. The Administration is using the information to

address goals and teaching improvements where necessary with all faculty. Faculty had the opportunity to discuss the process amongst themselves in a short forum as part of the new school year 2016-2017. The committee continues to look for ways to streamline and improve the process.

    • Professional development opportunities are communicated to all personnel and will be formally tracked as part of the faculty/staff performance review process.

Objective 2: Study compensation and professional recognition for faculty and staff.• Faculty/Staff Community Award was revived, regularly and formally recognizing faculty or staff through nomination by colleagues and

students.• A draft incentive compensation policy was written by a small group and shared with the Diocese of Fort Wayne. The incentive

compensation policy recognizes an employee who works above and beyond. The policy rewards employees strong in all areas of teaching, professional growth, and Catholic Identity. The report is being reviewed, as part of a larger study the Diocese is undertaking for a broader discussion.

Objective 3: Research the advantages and disadvantages of the principal/president model of school governance.• A proposal to change to the President/Principal governance model was submitted and denied by the Diocese. The Diocese wanted to study

the model further internally. However, approval was given to hire an additional administrator. The position of Director of Operations was created, approved, and filled in the 2015-2016 school year.

Objective 4: Enhance the diversity and intercultural awareness and competence of faculty and staff.• School leadership uses a variety of sources to ensure a diverse group of candidates for any open position representing wider ethnic and social

economic backgrounds. New staff positions, such as the creation of the Latino Outreach Liaison, were created to provide resources to families coming from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

    • School leadership and applicable school committees will continue to foster and cultivate new and innovative ways to promote a culturally diverse school environment.
