CONSERVATIONprotecting the best of Colorado’s land and water in perpetuityIn 2017, our conservation team made incredible strides towards protecting the best of Colorado. We protected over 26,000 acres, through eleven projects in eight Colorado counties.
The projects include a historic acequia property in Costilla County, several working farms and ranches, a publicly accessible park in Larimer County, and two wildlife sanctuaries with vastly different scopes - one just 8 acres in the Denver Metro Area, and another comprised of almost 18,000 acres on the Eastern Plains!
Additionally, the conservation team took on some big issues in our industry, including the ever-present threat of “buy and dry” - the practice of buying farms simply to convert water rights to other uses. Find our comprehensive guide to water sharing in conservation on our website!

STEWARDSHIPensuring that the land we protect remains as good or better than it started
In addition to monitoring over 420 easements, the stewardship team took on new challenges this year to improve and restore existing conserved lands. We helped landowners remove literally tons of invasive species, and kicked off work on our Riparian Reconnect initiative, which will improve river and stream quality in Park County.
Riparian Reconnect is the most ambitious restoration project in Colorado Open Lands’ history. The purpose of the initiative is to recover hydrological, ecological, and habitat benefits of functioning wetlands that have been lost over time to human influences. Plainly, by restoring wetlands, we can make the river systems work better for animals, and for people. The project will continue for the next two years and involves our partners Great Outdoors Colorado, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, The Park County Land and Water Trust Fund, and the Colorado Water Conservation Board. Work has already begun on a few of the project sites, such as DM Ranch in South Park, pictured at right.

COMMUNICATIONS, EDUCATION & OUTREACHconnecting people with the benefits of conservationColorado Open Lands continues to be a leader in connecting people with conservation. We do this primarily with on-the-land tours and experiences. In 2017, we piloted a new program to offer events to the public where they can see for themselves the benefits of conserved land, and experience the awe that the half a million acres that COL has helped protect can inspire.
One such outing involved taking a hearty crew of twenty birders to Arapaho Ranch outside of Nederland. We hiked along the stream and identified over twenty species of birds, as well as evidence of many other types of wildlife. To join us on an upcoming outing, visit our website to sign up for e-news.
We also started the Conservation Leadership Series in 2017, which takes emerging leaders in business, policy, conservation, and related fields and puts them through a rigorous one-year program of intense learning and touring Colorado’s conservation landscape. The leaders take that knowledge and experience with them as they continue in their personal and professional lives, building conservation allies for life. Above: Participants in on-the-land events. SPECIAL PROGRAMSleading and supporting the evolution of the land trust industryCOL has taken a leading role in shaping the future of Colorado’s conservation community. Much of this work was conducted through two initiatives - Partnering for Perpetuity and the Conservation Futures Project.
Partnering for Perpetuity was a wide-ranging research project that asked the question: what if there were more collaboration between land trusts? It examined efficiencies to be gained by partnerships ranging from informal and short-term, all the way to true mergers. The final document is a road-map to the costs and benefits of many such prospective partnerships, and if the land trusts choose to pursue them, this project will guide he way.
The Conservation Futures Project is an initiative of the Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts, the Gates Family Foundation, and Great Outdoors Colorado that examines conservation industry issues and aims to launch a new, statewide coalition that has the vision, capacity, and structure to most effectively guide and support the land conservation community as it evolves to meet current and future challenges. COL staff have been highly involved participants and are eager to participate in the new coalition that will launch in 2019. Above: Participants in the

DEVELOPMENTcelebrating our allies and making new friends
COL’s development team is dedicated to connecting conservation-minded donors with opportunities to advance our mission across the state of Colorado. One of the best ways that we are able to celebrate and thank our existing donors, and share our work with new friends, is through signature events that are on, or feature, conserved lands.
Cheers for Conservation was held at the conserved Five Fridges Farm in June of 2017. The farm-to-table event gathered nearly 200 friends of COL in celebration of conservation appraisers. Without these highly skilled professionals, conservation easements would not be possible. On behalf of a grateful community, we were honored to present them with the 25th George E. Cranmer Award.
Q for Conservation was held for the eleventh time, once again at History Colorado Center. We bestowed our highest honor, the Champion of the Land award, to the National Western Stock Show in recognition of their work to provide Coloradans, the region, and the world with a unique connection to the West’s working landscapes, today and for generations to come. The evening event also featured renowned Western art expert, Tom Petrie, who shared images and insights from his collection, reminding the 300 audience members of all the ways that land can inspire art and shape our culture.
These events are made possible by the generous support of individuals, companies, and landowners who share a love of the land. We are grateful for their support and the conservation impact their gifts and effort make possible.
