Bringing the thrill, freedom and therapeutic value

of boating to persons with disabilities, recovering

warriors and local youth from at-risk communities.

CRAB has established itself as the primary provider of

access to the Chesapeake Bay for persons with disabilities.

With more than 8 million people in the Baltimore-Annapolis-

District of Columbia area, it is estimated that there are over

one million persons facing the challenges and limitations

of disabilities. Also, this area has several medical facilities

dedicated to helping wounded warriors to recover from their

injuries. Add to that the local youth who may be facing

challenges in their communities, and there is quite a large

need for CRAB to continue to provide its services and

expand its programs and fleet.

Dear Friends of CRAB:

This past year has seen a whirlwind of activity for Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB), from new faces to new sailboats; new programs and exciting events. But as a former colleague of mine used to say “Don’t confuse activity with productivity.” So with productivity and accomplishments in mind, let me describe CRAB’s major achievements of 2017.

First let me start by saying nothing gets accomplished at CRAB without the strong support of our volunteers. We had 90 volunteer skippers, crew, and staff who donated over 2,000 hours in six months last year in support of 54 events. The professionalism of our volunteers was enhanced by the introduction of CRAB’s first Operations Manual which provided detailed instruction on how to provide the safest and most enjoyable learning environment for our guests on the water. The Operations Manual has now become a key component of the on-boarding process for new volunteers.

CRAB’s very purpose of providing sailing instruction to persons with disabilities increased substantially in 2017 as we worked with 17 organizations representing our guests for weekday Group Sails. We also conducted Sailing Clinics and Camps for persons with spinal cord injuries and local children from at-risk communities. We are pleased to report the number of camps being hosted in 2018 will double in number from last year. Nearly 800 guests, with 59% having a disability or challenge, sailed with CRAB.

The greatest accomplishment aside from bringing the thrill and freedom of sailing to our special guests was the complete

replacement of CRAB’s 30-year old fleet of four Catalina Free-dom 20’s with six brand new Beneteau First 22A’s (A for adap-tive). This was a major milestone for CRAB and we are thankful to Beneteau and Annapolis Yacht Sails for donating the first two boats. The generous support of three families provided CRAB with the financial resources to pay for 3 additional boats. The last boat was purchased using funds raised at the Boatyard Bar & Grill Regatta thanks to our many supporters.

One additional initiative that required a lot of CRAB’s time and focus during the past year and will in the future is the creation of an Adaptive Boating Center. By having our own facility in Annapolis our guests will not be faced with driving to a crowd-ed Sandy Point State Park that closes on summer weekends. It also will allow CRAB to expand its fleet to include a pontoon boat to take guests in wheelchairs on the Bay to fish or crab without leaving their wheelchair. This is no small effort and it will require the full support and commitment of the State, Anne Arundel County, and City of Annapolis to accomplish.

I wish to thank the CRAB Board of Directors who are providing the dedicated leadership to guide the organization to higher levels of service and expansion of our programs. The CRAB Staff and volunteers look forward to another exciting year with many new accomplishments and smiling faces on our guests!

Respectfully,

Paul “Bo” BollingerExecutive Director

GROUP SAILS

For organizations that provide services

to people with disabilities, CRAB will

arrange a two hour sail for their clients

on weekdays.

SAILING CAMPSPartnering with the County and City

police departments, local children

from at-risk communities and police

share two day Kid’s Camp where the

children are taught the basics of sailing

and compete in a regatta.

SAILING CLINICSA two day sailing clinic is offered by

way of grant funding. The grant source

determines the disability focus of

the clinic. Training takes place in the

classroom and on the water.

GROUP SAIL ORGANIZATIONS IN 2017

SailFreeEach month, April through October, volunteer skippers and crew welcome guests to SailFree

Sunday, an event designed to introduce persons with disabilities and their families to the free-

dom and therapeutic value of sailing. With the use of specialized equipment on the docks and

sailboats customized for accessiblity, this program allows guests to board boats easily and sail

safely. Guests enjoy new physical and cognitive behavioral experiences, learn leadership and

decision-making skills, and have fun making new friends on and off the water.

RegattasMany of CRAB’s guests take sailing to a higher, more

competitive level by participating in one or more of

CRAB’s four sailing regattas. Two regattas are held for

recovering warriors in April and September. The Don

Backe Memorial CRAB Regatta for disabled sailors,

hosted by the Annapolis Yacht Club, takes place in June.

The CRAB Cup (formerly known as the Boatyard Bar and

Grill Regatta), one of three races in the Weem’s & Plath’s

Triple Crown of Charity Sailing, is open to all sailors and

takes place in August at Eastport Yacht Club.

“I loved the racing….every-

one was getting involved….we were working

together….it’s phenomenal

and fun!”

...................

CRAB’s vision for the future is enormous, complex, insightful, bold, and at the same time, simple:

Although we have enjoyed the use of the marina at Sandy Point State Park, having CRAB

operations based there poses some issues with traffic back-ups on the Bay Bridge and early

closures of the park due to summer crowds reaching maximum capacity limits. Building an

Adaptive Boating Center in Annapolis would bring publicly accessible ADA floating docks to the

city and enable CRAB to offer: Adaptive Sailing, Rowing, Paddle Boarding, Canoeing, Kayaking.

There would be no limit to adaptive boating activities!

The CRAB Adaptive Boating Center (ABC) will provide training and jobs for local youths and

adults in support of all the boating programs, making the CRAB ABC a premier place to learn,

work and grow.

F U T U R E G O A L S

To create an adaptive boating center in Annapolis that provides sailing and boating experiences for persons with challenges and disabilities without limitations.
