2017 Annual Report

We are happy to share Troy’s story, one of our dental successes. Troy gave us permission to tell his story and share his photos because he was happy with the help we gave him. He came to our dental clinic in December 2016 with pain in his mouth, seven broken teeth and severe dental decay. Before coming to Oasis, Troy couldn’t remember the last time he had seen a dentist. No one had talked with him about the importance of taking care of his teeth and eating well. Our dental team worked with Troy over the next five months, helping him identify the priorities for his dental treatment. At each of his appointments, it was clear that his confidence was growing, and he began feeling good about himself. Our team worked hard to make Troy feel comfortable and to gain his trust. At the end of the five months, Troy was proud to show off his new smile. In a thank you card he sent our team, Troy said, “Thank you for all you have done. You all have worked so hard to bring my smile back and I thank you all so very much.”

This year has brought a lot of change for Oasis. It was our first year of having in-house dental services available for our patients. What a year! We served 500% more people this year than in the previous year, exceeding our own expectations. Our dental volunteers gave more time than ever, and we are grateful for their service. This spring, Dr. John Bauman stepped down as our Dental Director after many years of extraordinary service and leadership. Lucky for us, he will still serve on our Dental Steering Committee.

We have had several staff and volunteer changes this year. Dr. Irvin Paradis, Dr. Ken Murphy and Susan Thorner, RN, “retired” from Oasis after many years of service to our patients. We were saddened at the passing of Dr. Charles Arnold, whose kindness was appreciated by staff and patients alike. His wife, Dr. Sarah Arnold, was also a dedicated Oasis volunteer. We are grateful for their service and commitment to our patients.

Our biggest change has been the retirement of Oasis’ dynamic duo, Andree Appel, PA-C and Richard Corbin, MD. As our Clinical Director, Andree was at the helm for several years, working with our volunteers and staff to strength our organization for the future all the while taking care of our patients. When asked what her time at Oasis meant to her, here’s what Andree said:

“Being the Clinical Director of Oasis was without a doubt the best job I ever had. It demanded a lot and I gave it my all. I know it sounds cliché but I feel that it was what I was born to do- I can’t imagine loving a job more than I did that job! That said, I am also loving being retired! I know that the clinic is in excellent hands, and thanks to the efforts of our great staff and dedicated volunteers and the efforts of our outstanding Board, that important work will go on. Thank you all!!!”

Dr. Corbin came to Oasis in 2014 after a long career as a pulmonologist and chief medical officer at several hospitals. He has been an exceptional leader and physician, and he played a large part in the setting the course Oasis is currently charting. He shared this reflection about volunteering at Oasis:

I know that I am dating myself significantly, but it really is practicing medicine "like it used to be." In many respects, I feel that Oasis has given me more than I have given to it, and I will always be thankful for the opportunity to serve the organization as it strives to achieve its mission to serve those who are in many ways underserved by our society.”

After the departure of Andree, Dr. Corbin and Dr. Bauman, we were fortunate to create a new team of clinical leaders to guide Oasis through our next phase. Jeffrey Maher, MD, a beloved medical volunteer, joined our team as Medical Director this summer. Dr. Maher worked at Parkview Medical Center for many years and is now the Director of Health Services at Bowdoin College.

Rebecca Brown, PA-C, is our new Clinical Director. Rebecca brings many years of experience working in primary care to Oasis, and we are lucky to have her join our team. She is passionate about working with our patients and providing them with a warm, compassionate medical home.

Dr. Rick Elsaesser, a longtime volunteer, has become our new Dental Director. Dr. Elsaesser recently retired from his private practice and has given Oasis much of his newly found free time to overseeing our dental expansion.
