MOSAIC FAMILY SERVICES
IS A SAFE HAVEN FOR
SURVIVORS OF HUMAN
RIGHTS ABUSES, INCLUDING
REFUGEES AND SURVIVORS
OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
Dear Friends,
In 2018, we celebrated our Golden Anniversary, 25 years devoted to providing comprehensive social services and educational programs targeting the multicultural, refugee and immigrant communities that make North Texas unique. We understand our programs are most effective when we understand the culture and the language of the client. We are proud of our staff representing over 20 countries from around the world, and utilizing their backgrounds and language skills to better serve our diverse clientele.
In the last year, we directly served 8,259 individuals and families fleeing from violence, and provided outreach to more than 15,000 additional members of our community. We helped survivors from over 53 countries, invested in lasting partnerships, and empowered thousands of people toward self-sufficiency.
Now more than ever, this critical work would not be possible without the support of our community. With your help, we will continue this legacy of care.
Warmest Regards,
Walter H. Nguyen, Ph.D.Executive Director

WHO WE ARE
OUR TEAM
OUR CLIENTS
OUR
SUPPORTERS
Mosaic Family Services was founded in 1993 by Dr. Walter Nguyen, a
former refugee who escaped an oppressive regime in Vietnam in 1982 who
has dedicated nearly three decades to helping survivors of human rights
abuses build new lives. Our staff members speak more than 25 languages,
representing dozens of cultures and every major faith.
The women, children, and men we serve come from all over the world.
Though they come from different circumstances, every client has had their
freedom and human rights threatened by war, modern-day slavery or
violence in their own homes. They are testaments to the courage and
resilience of the human spirit.
Our volunteers and donors believe in the idea that freedom is a human
right. They give their time and resources to ensure that survivors of human
rights abuses in our community have opportunities they need to build new
lives of freedom and hope. Our supporters truly make everything we do
possible.

SURVIVORS
A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country “due
to a well-founded fear of being persecuted due to their race, religion,
nationality, social group or sexual orientation” (United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees). Most refugees have undergone extreme
physical and psychological hardship, culture shock, limited English skills
and other barriers. Mosaic’s goals are to improve their physical and mental
health, reduce barriers to health service utilization, increase knowledge of
navigating the health care system, and increase their abilities to become
self-sufficient.
Mosaic serves all survivors of family violence, intimate partner violence,
child and elderly abuse, sexual assault, dating violence, and other
qualifying crimes. One in three Texans will experience family violence in
their lifetime. While family violence occurs at the same rate across cultures,
there are factors and barriers that result in a greater severity of abuse in
immigrant communities and increased difficulty in accessing help.
Last year, 126 trafficked persons found freedom at Mosaic. Human trafficking is
modern day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain
some type of labor or commercial sex act. Here in Texas, there are an
estimated 300,000 victims of human trafficking today. Mosaic serves all
survivors of labor and sex trafficking, regardless of immigration status,
including minors, adults, foreign nationals, and domestic survivors.
PAGE 4 | ANNUAL REPORT
The mission of Mosaic Family Services is to support, educate, and empower the individuals and families within the multicultural
communities in North Texas. For over 25 years, we have impacted thousands of lives and empowered survivors of human rights abuses to
become self-sufficient by creating access to opportunities.

The Safe Release Support Program (SRS) helps reunite immigrant children with their sponsors in the United States, usually family members. These children often face violence and trauma in their home country and on their journey to America. Our program ensures that the minors are protected, cared for, and given access to the services they need.
Besides capturing fingerprints from 1,168 clients for background checks, Mosaic provided access to medical and legal help, parenting classes, helped to enroll children in school, and other services to encourage adjusting to their new lives and homes.
John F. Kennedy said“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is
that good men do nothing.”
SAFE RELEASE SUPPORTWHAT WE DO
Evil and it s violence forces people to flee the only lives they have known. Mosaic serves these survivors as they leave
everything behind in search of a better life. By serving with Mosaic, I am a force for good.

The Home Study Program’s goal is to link families with local
community resources in order to successfully and safely reunify
children with their families and/or with care providers.
Ultimately, we work to empower families through our services.
The Program’s goals are to assess the prospective sponsor’s ability to meet the needs of the unaccompanied minor they are hoping to sponsor, and to ensure a safe and secure home environment can be provided. A home study helps educate and prepare the sponsor for reunification. Families are provided with direct referrals and information on community resources for legal, education, medical, mental health, and other services.
76clients were served by the
Home Study Program this
year, providing support for
clients and families as they
prepare for upcoming
transitions.

“Victoria” sought refuge at our emergency shelter, Mosaic
House, after gathering the confidence to leave her abusive
husband for the second time. During her first week at there,
she was unsure what the future would hold for her and her
two children. Within a month at Mosaic, Victoria’s innate
optimism began to find light. At Mosaic House, Victoria and
her two daughters had access to counseling services to
assist with emotional crises. Her family also received legal
assistance every step of the way through her divorce and
immigration matters. During her stay at Mosaic House,
Victoria and her daughters were able to find a community of
support. Through a referral by her case manager, Victoria
was able to attend a divorce support group led by a local
church in which Victoria says she “found a family.”
Months later, Victoria found stable furnished housing,
overcame several obstacles, and developed a steady income
to support her family. Victoria is now self-sufficient and
continues to express her gratefulness for the services and
support Mosaic has provided to her family.

“It took me 11 years to report the abuse, suffering, pain and horrors that my sisters and I went through. I was so afraid, feel shame, people are going to think I’m the biggest stupid person in the world; I feel unworthy; with no self-esteem or value.
I decide to speak not just for me, but also for all the thousands of victims that did not survive, and for the thousands of them that are still in bondage and suffering, and for the ones that survive but still need healing and recovery. I also want to speak to help people understand that Human Trafficking is real, and is happening here in Texas and all around the world, and we must do anything in our power to stop it and help the victims.
When we had our first appointment with our case manager, we were shaking, very skeptical… she helped us to report to the Special Police unit that handles Human Trafficking cases. Then a very painful process started, remembering, nightmares, stress, sorrow, and depression, all that was necessary for us to start healing. We went to court, and in ,2017 the woman that hurt us, and used us for her benefit, is now in jail!”
