As always, it was another Life. Changing. year for the Indian Hills Community College Foundation. With your continued support, we were able to help 572 students by awarding over $1.2 million in scholarship support.

Since joining the Foundation earlier this year, I have learned how incredible our donors truly are. The Life. Changing. Giving. of our donors has strongly impacted the lives of our students. We frequently hear from alumni about their Life. Changing. experiences at Indian Hills. The Foundation has been fortunate to play a formative role in the lives of so many students.

What you will see in this annual report is that the Foundation is looking forward. Last year, the Foundation changed our mission statement to provide additional resources that will ensure student and community success. The Foundation staff, as well as the staff and faculty of Indian Hills, are pushing ahead, searching for more opportunities to increase students’ potential.

Several changes are occurring in the Foundation. We will be hosting more alumni engagement events, creating gift options tailored to donor requests, and more. Our mission is to create an exceptional donor experience in an effort to grow and maintain long-term, sustainable donor relationships.

Over the last 42 years, the Indian Hills Community College Foundation has impacted the lives of over 18,000 individual students. The Foundation is looking forward to assisting the College in new ways while maintaining the ultimate goal of ensuring our students possess all the tools necessary to succeed. We will continue to put the needs of our students first while looking forward to creating innovative solutions for the College.

Those that are currently active during the 2017-2018 academic year are listed below except those noted with an asterisk (*), which are established for future use. A designated or named scholarship is one set up by an individual, business, industry, or group with a minimum contribution of $600. A memorial scholarship is one set up with the memorial funds received from family and friends or through a trust established as a result of a last will and testament. Many people establish their own scholarships through estate planning and initiate them so they can see the results of their assistance to students.

SOUP FOR THE ARTSThe bi-annual Soup for the Arts Scholarship Event took place on March 22 at the IHCC Main Campus Dining Hall. Attendees of the event received hand-crafted, one of a kind bowl, along with various types of soup and desserts donated by local restaurants and caterers. Proceeds from the event were divided between a scholarships for one Arts student and one Culinary Arts Student, and the Heartland Humane Society. The next Soup for the Arts event will taken place in 2019.

40TH ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AUCTIONDespite a rainy Saturday, approximately $17,000 was raised at the Indian Hills Foundation’s 40th Annual Scholarship Auction on April 29. This year’s auction items included a 1973 HobieCat Catamaran, many furniture items, items grown in the Indian Hills Greenhouse, and numerous new items donated by local businesses. The auction is traditionally the highest-earning annual Foundation fundraiser for student scholarships. The 2018 Auction is scheduled for April 28, 2018.

39TH ANNUAL IHCC FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENTThe 39th Annual Indian Hills Community College Foundation Golf Tournament was held on June 16. IHCC President Dr. Marlene Sprouse, along with the IHCC Foundation and Athletics Department Staff, welcomed 140 golfers to the tournament. 39 sponsors, 11 corporate teams, and 25 volunteers helped generate over $5,000 in scholarship dollars. The 39th Annual Golf Tournament is scheduled for June 15, 2018.

WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN CULINARY DINNEROn Thursday, October 5, the IHCC Foundation held the seventh annual Women Supporting Women Culinary Dinner. This event was remarkable. Over $9,000 was generated for future scholarships. The Women Supporting Women event features wine tasting, accompanied by an elegant dinner along with appropriate wine pairings. The goal of this exclusive event is to raise funds for the Women Supporting Women Scholarship. During the event’s eight years, over $80,000 has been raised, which allows for three annual awards of $1,000 to be given. The next Women Supporting Women event is scheduled for October 4, 2018.

36TH ANNUAL CELEBRITY NIGHTThis year’s Celebrity Night guest speaker was Chris Norton, a former Luther College football player who faced and overcame a severe spinal cord injury. The event raised over $10,000 for student scholarships. Those in attendance were captivated and moved by Norton’s story of triumph, determination, and heart as he worked against the odds. The evening closed with an auction of local artists’ work organized by IHCC art instructor Mark McWhorter, and auctioneer Jim Kosman of Al Martin Auction Co. donated his time to help achieve the high bids. Celebrity Night 2017 is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 2018.

2016 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENTS

Mary Kivlahan - Retiree Former IHCC employee Mary Kivlahan, who worked at the college for 38 years, was given the Outstanding Retiree Award for her involvement and support of the college since retiring. Kivlahan has stayed involved in many fundraising activities such as Celebrity Night, the culinary scholarship dinner, the Scholarship Auction, and Women Supporting Women. In the spring, Mary volunteers her time to plant flowers on the Ottumwa Main Campus.

Rollie & Lucy Reznicek - Lay Citizen

The Outstanding Lay Citizen Award went to Rollie & Lucy Reznicek, active members of the Ceneterville community for the last 53 years. Lucy is a graduate of IHCC. She and Rollie were very passionate about the IHCC Bond Issue and took it upon themselves to educate and communicate the importance of the investment into their campus and their community.

David Birchmier - AlumnusDavid Birchmier, was honored with the Outstanding Alumnus Award, which recognizes achievements since an alumnus graduated from Indian Hills. Birchmier is a successful alumnus who has chosen to stay and build his businesses in southern Iowa. David is both the founder and CEO of MPA (My Personal Admin) headquartered in Bloomfield, IA. In addition to MPA, David is also the Vice President of Iowa Wind and Solar, headquartered in Fairfield.

Michael Schnoeblen - EmployeeMichael Schnoeblen, was honored with the Outstanding Employee Award, in recognition of his knowledge, willingness to help others, and his attention to detail. Schnoeblen serves as the Director of Programing Services at IHCC. Michael is always on the frontline of exploring new technology/advancements which makes IHCC more user-friendly and efficient for our students and staff.

Summers pushes students to excel not only in academia and labs but also in life. He serves on many committees on campus and volunteers his time to many fundraising activities. You can often find him helping other staff members on projects or assisting a student with needs after office hours.

THE DR. LINDENMAYER AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP

In 2013, the Dr. Jim Lindenmayer Award for Exceptional Leadership was created to recognize those who lead with compassion, integrity, service and vision. The first recipient was Dr. Jim Lindenmayer, who retired from Indian Hills in 2013 after a 33-year career.

Bob SinclairBob Sinclair, entrepreneur and businessman with multiple business locations in the IHCC 10-county region, accepted the Jim Lindenmayer Leadership Award in recognition of his leadership traits; compassion, integrity, service and vision. Bob holds employees to high expectations while valuing them as humans with families and faiths that he believes should come first. In addition to his businesses, Sincliar has also worked for many years on the IHCC Advisory Committee, where his advice was valued and he continued to grow into the confident leader he is today.
