DEAR HIGH RISK HOPE FAMILY,Thanks to High Risk Hope’s loyal donors, volunteers, board members, staff and families, 2017 proved to be a record-breaking year on all fronts. This year, we received our largest single donation ever from Jersey Mike’s Subs through the Month of Giving, which raised $100,000 for HRH. Our HRH Baby Calendar was featured on Today.com where it received an overwhelmingly positive response from inspired families nationwide. We celebrated our sixth birthday, hired three new employees, had a record-breaking 850 Tot Trotters, and hit the $1 million mark for funds raised since HRH’s founding in 2011. Most importantly, HRH supported 1,750 families experiencing high risk pregnancy and premature birth in Florida and California this year.

The impact HRH has on these families is apparent in the countless parents who connect with us, sometimes while still in the hospital, wanting to support others experiencing the same harrowing journey. Each of the 13 HRH Calendar Baby families, when asked why they entered the contest, responded with a resounding “to give other families hope.” But perhaps the biggest honor came from a HRH family with limited means who so passionately wanted to give back, that they chose their one monthly family dinner out to be on the Day of Giving at Jersey Mike’s Subs when 100% of sales were donated back to HRH.

While HRH has touched the lives of over 6,700 families since 2011, tens of thousands more need our support as the premature birth rate in America continues to rise. HRH remains the only nonprofit in the nation that supports both women on hospital bed rest and families with premature infants in the NICU. With your continued support in 2018, HRH hopes to expand to several new hospitals across Florida reaching 750 more families in crisis. Thank you for your commitment to improving the health outcomes of premature babies in this community.

Sincerely,

Heather Barrow Founder and Board Chair

Jersey Mike’s Subs Month of Giving HRH was the Jersey Mike’s Subs 2017 Month of Giving partner for 30+ West Central Florida locations. Thanks to this community and our Jersey Mike’s Subs restaurant owners, HRH received $100,000 from the 2017 Month of Giving and was invited back for 2018!

HRH Baby Calendar The fourth annual HRH Calendar Baby contest was a huge success! 47 babies entered, and 25,627 votes were tallied to select the HRH babies featured in this year’s calendar which will be delivered to over 2,000 families in 2018. Today.com loved our calendar so much, they did a feature article spotlighting our calendar and the HRH families’ inspirational stories.

Tot Trot HRH’s fifth annual Tot Trot presented by Jersey Mike’s Subs was held in November in Tampa in conjunction with World Prematurity Day. A record number 850 Tot Trotters walked, ran, and strolled down the Miracle Mile, helping to raise over $71,000.

HRH Team HRH added three incredible team members in 2017. Sasha Smith began in January as our Program Coordinator. In the fall, HRH welcomed Kerri Kibbey as Director of Special Events, Marketing and Public Relations and Shannon Oras as Development Coordinator. All three have become crucial to achieving HRH’s mission, and you can expect great things to come!

HIGH RISK HOPE HIGHLIGHTS

Give Day Tampa Bay For the fourth year in a row, HRH topped the leaderboard of 500 regional nonprofits on Give Day Tampa Bay, raising $80,000 from 350 donors and winning $3,500 in prizes. Thanks to our exclusive partnership with Hyde Park Village, hundreds of HRH supporters came to the Village to shop with their HRH shopping pass and celebrate at HRH’s story time and a private Pirate and Princess meet and greet.

NICU Milestone Cards HRH added NICU Milestone Cards to our NICU Napsacks in 2017, and they have quickly become a HRH family favorite. The cards help document every step in a preemie’s journey and celebrate their progress. NICU milestones range from first time being held to becoming a NICU grad.

Adeline’s mom had preeclampsia and was on hospital bed rest for 3 weeks at Sarasota Memorial Hospital before her lab work showed signs of kidney failure. Doctors delivered Adeline via C-section at 32 weeks, 2 days. She spent 21 days in the NICU as a grower/feeder, never once needing oxygen! Adeline Karys is her family’s little miracle and now at 1-year-old she is full of personality and wonder.

Adeline’s mom, Stephanie said, "HRH's support was one of the only things that kept my head above water during THE scariest time in my life. The calendar helped me count the days, and the little heroes and their stories gave me hope that it would all be okay. The shampoo, conditioner and the rest of the toiletries, as small as that seems, made a huge difference. Those daily showers reminded me that I wasn't becoming part of that hospital bed. The pens and coloring book were the ice breaker when my 9-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son were apprehensive of sitting next to me because of all the cords hooked up to me. The blanket was a comfort at night when I was alone and separated from my family. It made it much easier to fall asleep. And most of all the visit from the HRH volunteers, their smiles and testimonies of hope and victory were water to my parched stamina. Thank you for all you do! And I will continue to do all I can do to give back to such an organization that impacted myself and my family as much as they did."

ABOUT HIGH RISK HOPE

This year, High Risk Hope (HRH) will serve 700 pregnant women on hospital bed rest and 2,000 premature infants, but many more need our services. Over 22,500 babies (10%) will be born prematurely in Florida in 2018. With your help, we can give more families the support they need during their hospitalization for a high risk pregnancy or after the birth of a premature infant. We cannot do it without you, so we are asking you to get involved. You can join the fight for preemies by becoming a HRH Baby Calendar or Tot Trot Sponsor and make an impact that will last a lifetime for babies in our state.

Tamika Forteau became pregnant with twins at the age of 23. She had just returned from Italy after studying abroad for six weeks as part of her studies at the University of South Florida and had begun her final semester when she learned the news. She was extremely nervous as she was deemed high risk due to being pregnant with twins. Tamika continued to see both her OB and high-risk doctor throughout her pregnancy. She graduated from USF in May 2016 with her bachelor’s degree while 30 weeks pregnant with twins. At her doctor’s appointment hours after graduation, she learned that she had a shortened cervix. The doctor explained she would have to be on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy. This was a very emotional time as she wasn’t used to depending on other people. At 32 weeks pregnant, her water broke. She was scared and not prepared for her babies to come along so soon. By the time she arrived at the hospital, she was 4 cm dilated, and in a matter of hours, her beautiful baby girls were born. Both babies spent 30 days in the St. Joseph's Women’s Hospital NICU. Taliya and Aria are Tamika’s blessings. They are now happy and healthy 15 month-old toddlers who are constantly on the move.

Patient Quotes: “High Risk Hope is just an amazing organization. The thoughtful volunteers prepare and deliver these gift totes with compassion and reassuring smiles. Even though we had a lengthy stay, and saw many other families come and go, it was great to be reminded that we were not alone in this journey. And the stories and pictures of other HRH babies/families in the calendar give me hope daily that things will get easier and will get better!” –Megan, hospital bedrest, daughter born 29 weeks, 147 days NICU, Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (first NICU bag recipient!)

High Risk Hope’s A-Team!Serving as both the Executive Director and Board Chair since founding High Risk Hope (HRH) in 2011, it has been my dream to find the perfect person to take over as Executive Director. HRH has grown tremendously during the past six and a half years, from no employees and a few volunteers serving only one hospital and a few hundred patients to four employees and 100 volunteers serving six hospitals (with several new ones in the works) and 2,500 patients every year. We have raised over $1.25 million and helped 6,500 families in crisis thanks to the support of our loyal donors.

One of the families HRH supported in 2014 is the Nicholas Family. Bailey Nicholas was pregnant with twins when she was admitted to St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital and placed on hospital bedrest for preeclampsia, where she received a HRH Bed Rest Basket. After four weeks in the hospital, a spike in blood pressure caused her to have Henry and Nora six weeks early. The babies spent several weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit, where they each received a HRH NICU Napsack™. Once their entire family was healthy and home, Bailey began volunteering at HRH, delivering bags to patients and helping with various fundraising initiatives. I was so impressed with Bailey’s fundraising, nonprofit leadership skills and passion for HRH, that I asked her to join our team in 2015 to oversee fundraising and special events. She was a stay at home mom with her twins at the time, and not in the market for a job. Thankfully, Bailey accepted because it was her dream to work for the organization that helped her family during their crisis.

Bailey has exceeded my expectations ever since. She is hard working, creative, intelligent, driven, honest, caring and truly has our HRH families’ best interests at heart. She is willing to try anything (Belly Flop For Babies) to elevate HRH’s presence in the community. She sets high but attainable goals for herself and the HRH team and ensures we exceed them. Bailey has never met a stranger and sees every interaction with another person as a chance to tell them about the wonderful things we are doing at HRH. She has developed strong relationships with HRH hospital partners, with several of them inviting her to serve on hospital committees. All of these traits combined convinced me that I had finally found the person I could trust with my third baby, HRH. Earlier this year I spoke with Bailey

about what I hoped would be her future as the Executive Director of HRH. She didn’t hesitate in accepting the challenge and has worked hard every day during our transition to prove that she is exactly the leader I hoped she would be in this role.

I had a similar conversation with Kerri Kibbey. Kerri is also a bed rest and NICU mom and has been a HRH Board member since 2012. She was one of our first ten volunteers after tracking me down at the hospital, shortly after her daughter was discharged from the NICU, because she wanted to become involved. Kerri has been extremely involved at HRH over the years and is the brains behind some of our biggest events, including the Tot Trot. Her husband’s job took their family to Miami two years ago, but they received unexpected news over the summer that he was needed back in Tampa in September. I jumped on the opportunity to see if Kerri would be interested in transitioning roles at HRH to become our Director of Special Events, Marketing and Public Relations. I believe Kerri saw her exceptional potential to help serve more HRH families through the growth of our revenue streams as clearly as I did and happily accepted this new role. She brings experience, knowledge, and compassion to this position and knows more about certain aspects of HRH than I do! Kerri was made for this position and we can all expect only great things from her.

In 2011, never in my wildest dreams did I foresee HRH growing to the organization it is today. Fast-forward to 2017 and I can dream much bigger, because I now know what the High Risk Hope family is capable of. Bailey and Kerri’s leadership of our A- team will enable HRH to reach thousands of families in the future. I can’t wait to see what they will accomplish.

Books for BabiesHRH is collecting new or gently used books in celebration of our 7th birthday on February 16, 2018. These books are given to our families of premature babies being treated in the NICU. HRH needs 2,500 or more books to ensure every preemie we serve receives at least one book during 2018. This is a wonderful opportunity to have your entire family involved through planning a book drive at your child’s school, cleaning out books from your children’s bookshelf, or raising money for HRH to purchase new books. We have added an Amazon wish list this year that you can purchase from or share with your friends and family. Go to ‘Find a List or Registry’ and type in ‘High Risk Hope’. These books can be shipped directly to our HRH office. If you would like to drop off books or organize a book drive, email [email protected].

Jersey Mike’s Subs Month of GivingWe are thrilled to announce that HRH has been selected as the Jersey Mike's Subs 2018 Month of Giving partner for 30+ West Central Florida locations. The 2017 Month of Giving raised $100,000 for HRH, and we were invited back for a second year. Jersey Mike’s Subs locations will collect donations for HRH from their customers the entire month of March and donate 100% of total sales to HRH on Wednesday, March 28th. There are several ways you can help HRH be successful during the Month of Giving. The simplest way is to eat at Jersey Mike’s Subs throughout the month of March, but especially eat a sub (or two) on March 28th. If your office has luncheons during March, Jersey Mike’s Subs has an excellent catering menu. We also will need dozens of HRH Ambassadors to assist us in covering the Jersey Mike’s Subs locations on March 28th. Please email [email protected] if you are interested.

Give Day Tampa BayGive Day Tampa Bay is a 24-hour online giving competition hosted by The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay to raise support and awareness for local nonprofits. For the fourth straight year, HRH is partnering exclusively with Hyde Park Village. Participating restaurants and retailers will offer HRH Give Day Tampa Bay donors exclusive discounts on May 1st. HRH also has several fun events planned throughout the day. Email [email protected] if you would like more information on Give Day Tampa Bay.

Giving Challenge in SarasotaThe Giving Challenge is a 24-hour online giving competition hosted by The Community Foundation of Sarasota County. The Giving Challenge, in partnership with The Patterson Foundation, was formed with four main goals in mind: generate community excitement about charitable giving, demonstrate that everyone can be a philanthropist, heighten awareness about local choices in giving, and infuse dollars and opportunities beyond the dollar for local nonprofit organizations. The Giving Challenge will be held May 1st-2nd, noon to noon. Email [email protected] if you would like more information on the Giving Challenge.

RACE & ETHNICITY IN FLORIDA

Disparity ratio

Change from baseline

The March of Dimes disparity ratio measures and tracks progress towards the elimination of racial/ethnic disparities in preterm birth. It is based on Healthy People 2020 methodology and compares the group with the lowest preterm birth rate to the average for all other groups. Progress is evaluated by comparing the current disparity ratio to a

baseline disparity ratio. A lower disparity ratio is better, with a disparity ratio of 1 indicating no disparity.

No ImprovementIn Florida, the preterm birth rate among black women is 49% higher than

the rate among all other women.

COUNTIES

Premature Birth Report Card grades are assigned by comparing the 2016 preterm birth rate in a state or locality to the March of Dimes goal of 8.1 percent by 2020. The Report Card highlights priority areas for action with county and racial/ethnic disparities data and a disparity ratio. Report Cards are intended to spur action to improve equity and reduce preterm birth, with the goal of giving every mother and baby a fair chance for a healthy pregnancy and birth.

PRETERM BIRTH: DEFINITION AND SOURCEPremature or preterm birth is birth less than 37 weeks gestation based on the obstetric estimate of gestational age. Data used in this report card came from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) natality files, as compiled from data provided by the 57 vital statistics jurisdictions through the Vital Statistics Cooperative Program. This national data source was used so that data are comparable for each state and jurisdiction-specific report card. Data provided on the report card may differ from data obtained directly from state or local health departments and vital statistics agencies, due to timing of data submission and handling of missing data. The preterm birth rate shown at the top of the report card was calculated from the NCHS 2016 final natality data. Preterm birth rates in the trend graph are from the NCHS 2007-2016 final natality data. County preterm birth rates are from the NCHS 2015 final natality data. Preterm birth rates for bridged racial and ethnic categories were calculated from NCHS 2013-2015 final natality data. Preterm birth rates were calculated as the number of preterm births divided by the number of live births with known gestational age multiplied by 100.

PRETERM BIRTH BY RACE/ETHNICITY OF THE MOTHERMother’s race and Hispanic ethnicity are reported separately on birth certificates. Rates for Hispanic women include all bridged racial categories (white, black, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Asian/Pacific Islander). Rates for non-Hispanic women are classified according to race. The Asian/Pacific Islander category includes Native Hawaiian. In order to provide stable rates, racial and ethnic groups are shown on the report card if the group had 20 or more preterm births in each year from 2010-2015. To calculate preterm birth rates on the report card, three years of data were aggregated (2013-2015). Preterm birth rates for not stated/unknown race are not shown on the report card.

GRADING METHODOLOGYGrade ranges were established in 2015 based on standard deviations of final 2014 state and District of Columbia preterm birth rates away from the March of Dimes goal of 8.1% by 2020. Grades were determined using the following scoring formula: (preterm birth rate of each jurisdiction – 8.1%) / standard deviation of final 2014 state and District of Columbia preterm birth rates. The resulting scores were rounded to one decimal place and assigned a grade. See the table for details.

2017 PREMATURE BIRTH REPORT CARD

PRETERM BIRTH BY COUNTYReport cards for states and jurisdictions, except District of Columbia, display up to 6 counties with the greatest number of live births. Counties are not displayed if the number of preterm births is less than 20. Counties are ordered alphabetically. Grades were assigned based on criteria described above. Change from previous year was assessed by comparing the 2015 county preterm birth rate to the 2014 rate.

PRETERM BIRTH DISPARITY MEASURESThe March of Dimes disparity ratio is based on Healthy People 2020 methodology and provides a measure of the differences, or disparities, in preterm birth rates across racial/ethnic groups within a geographic area.1 The disparity ratio compares the racial/ethnic group with the lowest preterm birth rate (comparison group) to the average of the preterm birth rate for all other groups.

To calculate the disparity ratio, the 2013-2015 preterm birth rates for all groups (excluding the comparison group) were averaged and divided by the 2013-2015 comparison group preterm birth rate. The comparison group is the racial/ethnic group with the lowest six-year aggregate preterm birth rate (2010-2015) among groups that had 20 or more preterm births in all years from 2010-2015. A disparity ratio was calculated for each U.S. state (excluding Maine, Puerto Rico, Vermont, and West Virginia), the District of Columbia, and the total U.S. A lower disparity ratio is better, with a disparity ratio of 1 indicating no disparity.

Progress towards eliminating racial and ethnic disparities was evaluated by comparing the 2013-2015 disparity ratio to a baseline (2010-2012) disparity ratio. Change between time periods was assessed for statistical significance at the 0.05 level using the approach recommended by Healthy People 2020.1 If the disparity ratio significantly improved because the average preterm birth rate for all other groups got better, we displayed “Improved” on the report card. If the disparity ratio significantly worsened because the lowest group got better or the average of all other groups got worse, we displayed “Worsened” on the report card. If the disparity ratio did not significantly change, we displayed “No Improvement” on the report card.

The report card also provides the percent difference between the racial/ethnic group with the 2013-2015 highest preterm birth rate compared to the combined 2013-2015 preterm birth rate among women in all other racial/ethnic groups. This percent difference was calculated using only the racial/ethnic groups displayed on the state or jurisdiction-specific report card. This difference was calculated for each U.S. state with adequate numbers and the District of Columbia.

CALCULATIONSAll calculations were conducted by the March of Dimes Perinatal Data Center.
