Years

FareStart Continues to InnovateTwenty-five years ago, FareStart started with a mission to feed those who needed it and to train those who we fed. Over time, we added new locations and businesses to fuel our mission. We forged new partnerships to ensure our students were supported and basic needs were met. We developed new programs to help youth who needed a pathway toward a better future. We created a national program to help share the FareStart model with other organizations across the country.

FareStart has always evolved and innovated to meet the growing needs in our community while remaining true to its original purpose. In our 25th year, with the needs in our community more urgent than ever, we did not spend a lot of time looking back to the past. Instead, as FareStart does, we looked forward.

Thanks to the incredible support of Amazon and other supporters, we launched a first-of-its-kind apprenticeship program to help people skill up towards living wage jobs in the foodservice industry. Simultaneously, we opened multiple eateries in South Lake Union, which serve as the training ground for this new program. During this foundational year we’ve learned what works and what could work as we continue to innovate and evolve.

Meanwhile, our core programs remain as critical as ever as we saw a record-breaking number of people, both youth and adults, walk through our doors.

• Our Adult Culinary Program trains adults experiencing homelessness and poverty, so that they are empowered to become self-sufficient.• Our Youth Barista & Culinary Programs offer young people a path to succeed. • Our Community & School Meals Programs still feeds people experiencing hunger in shelters, hospice care or educational organizations 365 days a year. • Guest Chef Night continues to give our students the opportunity to work with illustrious chefs in the community.• Catalyst Kitchens is our national program that uses the FareStart model to launch and scale up programs across the country.

None of our work is possible without our donors, volunteers, employment partners and supporters. Thank you for your incredible support over the years –many of you have been there from the very beginning, pushing us to expand our reach and help more people grab the wheel. You’ve been steadfast while we have been pushing forward.

Foodservice Apprenticeship ProgramThe apprenticeship program focuses on giving foodservice workers the tools and skills they need to take the next step in their careers. The apprentices have a choice of career tracks: line cook, server, corporate dining lead, catering cook, coffee shop lead or catering captain.

The paid, hands-on training program allows participants to work alongside FareStart staff at our eateries to further develop and refine both their technical skills and their professionalism in the workplace to skill up towards a living wage.

The program was created with the guidance of our Employer Council made up of local businesses and owners in the foodservice community and is endorsed by the Washington Hospitality Association.

Rising Higher CampaignFareStart's Rising Higher Campaign raised critical funds from individuals, companies and foundations to support the new Foodservice Apprenticeship Program and expansion.

In particular, Amazon’s generosity in giving FareStart the use of more than 25,000 square feet of beautiful foodservice and training space in their South Lake Union campus, along with the support of the greater FareStart community, allowed us to rapidly expand our size and impact.

A Year of ExpansionFareStart launched a first-of-its-kind Foodservice Apprenticeship Program with the help of a large-scale fundraising campaign called Rising Higher and the generous support of Amazon. We've opened new businesses located in South Lake Union to work with the apprentices in real-world applications.

Rise by FareStartRise is an Italian-inspired coffee shop. Here you'll find teas, coffees, kombuchas, pastries and sandwiches.

Community Table by FareStartCommunity Table is a fast casual lunch experience offering bowls, salads and more.

Maslow’s by FareStartMaslow's is a full service restaurant featuring new American cuisine. All ingredients on our menu are house made, sustainable and local as available.

FareStart opened new businesses located in South Lake Union to further our mission. These businesses give our Foodservice Apprentices real-world experience working with customers, chefs and staff. All are open to the public.

ImpactFareStart continues to be a pioneer in reducing hunger, poverty and homelessness in our community. This year, with the help of community supporters, we saw a record-breaking number of people walk through our doors.

FinancialsThis year FareStart received a significant donation that enabled us to launch the Foodservice Apprenticeship Program and open new social enterprise businesses dedicated to our philosophy of hands-on, real-world training. Amazon gifted FareStart the use of more than 25,000 square feet of space in its South Lake Union campus. Maslow’s, Rise, and Community Table occupy that space as well as a training classroom. The infusion of an in-kind donation of this size is remarkable and the generosity of Amazon cannot be overstated.

This gift results in our financial report reading differently than in previous years; however, we are still fundamentally an organization that needs the support of our community to continue to do the necessary and hard work of our mission.
