Battery Audition Packet
Please direct any questions to Patrick Lyons at
To all 2017-2018 River City Rhythm Winter Drumline prospective members –
Thank you for your interest in auditioning to be a part of the ninth season of the River City Rhythm
Winter Drumline! We are coming off an extremely exciting season, having been promoted by WGI to
PIW just before Championships. We’re excited to enter the season on PIW and have you be a part of
it!
In this packet, you will find everything you need to prepare you for a successful audition regardless
of what instrument(s) you want to play. Included you will find all of our exercises, audition material,
and helpful hints to keep in mind during the audition process. The season schedule is located at the
RCR website (www.rivercityrhythm.org) and will regularly be updated to reflect any schedule
changes that may arise. Locations will be solidified as we get closer to the dates.
Your audition/evaluation will consist of an individual audition, your ability to play and perform
within a larger ensemble, a group visual audition, and improvement not only from rehearsal to
rehearsal but within individual rehearsals themselves. Contracts will be handed out as early as the
first weekend, with the intention of having the entire ensemble contracted within the first 3
weekends. The staff will be your biggest supporters and will provide feedback to help you improve
to give you the best chance to make the instrument you desire with River City Rhythm.
The first audition weekend will take place on October 28th from 9 AM to 9 PM and from October 29th
from 9 AM to 6 PM. Rehearsal for both days will be at Centennial High School in Circle Pines, MN.
We are dedicated to building on our success of the past seven years which includes:
2-time WGI Independent A Finalist (2010 and 2011)
Promotion mid-season by WGI from PIA to PIO in 2012
5-time WGI Independent Open Finalist (2012 through 2016)
4-time WGI Independent Open Fan Favorite Award Recipient (2012 through 2015)
2016 WGI Independent Open Bronze Medalist
2-time MPA Independent A Champions (2010 and 2011)
4-time MPA Independent Open Champions (2013 through 2016)
Promotion mid-season by WGI from PIO to PIW in 2017
Thank you again for your interest! If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.
Good luck!

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE AUDITION PROCESS
If you are auditioning for a batterie instrument, your evaluation will consist of a couple different things:
Individual audition(s)
Marching/movement and playing
Improvement from week to week
Ability to learn things quickly
For Snare and Tenor Auditionees, please prepare the following for your audition:
1. Exercise One – Legato Strokes
2. Exercise Two – Accent/Tap
3. Exercise Three – Double/Triple Strokes
4. Exercise Four – Triplet Rolls
5. Exercise Five – P. Diddy Erasmus
6. Exercise 6a and 6b – Grid
For Bass Drum Auditionees, please prepare the following for your audition:
1. Exercises 1-6
a. Try to play the snare drum part and choose two split parts to learn and demonstrate
For Cymbal Auditionees, please prepare the following:
1. Exercise One – Basic Strokes
2. Exercise Two – Accent/Tap
3. Exercise Five – P. Diddy Erasmus
4. Refer to the cymbal audition page in this packet, which contains links to 9 different videos
describing several of the key techniques for playing cymbals. Please familiarize yourself with
each lesson! Questions can be directed to Cole Hanton and/or Jacqueline Gaetz, Cymbal
Instructors for River City Rhythm Indoor Drumline.
Exercise One: Legato Strokes
This is usually the first exercise we will play as a group when we warm up. The primary objective is to work on the “Rebound
Stroke,” which is when you play the drum and allow the stick to rebound back to its starting height. At slower tempos (Up to
132 bpm – Beats per Minute) you should strive for all stick heights to be “full,” or at a height of 15”. As the tempo increases
above 136 bpm, you’ll have to compensate for the speed of the five-lets by lowering your heights. Another variation of this
exercise is to change the height so that everything is at 3”. This will then work on the “Tap Stroke,” which is when you attack
each note at 3” and only allow the stick to come back up to 3”. Though this is still considered a Legato Stroke, you should
hold onto the stick a little tighter with the back of the hand during the Tap Stroke to achieve optimum sound quality and stick
control.
There are three versions of this exercise:
1) Beginning to the downbeat of measure 9
2) Measure 9 to the end
3) Entire exercise as written
Exercise Two: Accent Tap
Usually the second exercise we’ll play during our warm-up sequence, this exercise works on putting together all four types of
strokes of rudimental drumming. For the bass drums, this exercise also works on transitioning from split passages into unison
passages. These type of transitions are a common source of “dirt” and require a great deal of listening. The type of stroke you
play for each note on this exercise depends on two things: the height of the note and the height of the next note. The four
types of strokes are:
1. Rebound Stroke: Stick starts at a certain height and rebounds back to where it started. An example of this is two
consecutive accented eighth notes. The first note would be played with a rebound stroke so that the second one
could be attacked from the same height.
2. Tap Stroke: Stick starts at a low height (usually 3”) and rebounds back to the same low height. An example of this is
two consecutive eighth notes at a dynamic of piano and neither one is accented. The first note would be played with
a tap stroke at 3” so that the next note could be attacked from 3” as well.
3. Down Stroke: Stick starts at a certain height above 3” and only rebounds up to 3”. An example of this is two
consecutive eighth notes where the first one is accented, the second one is note. The first note would be played with
a tap stroke so that the second note could be attacked from 3”.
4. Up Stroke: Stick starts at a low height (usually 3”) and rebounds back to a higher height. An example of this is two
consecutive eighth notes where the first one is not accented but the second one is. The first note would be played
with an upstroke starting at 3” so that the next note could be attacked from a higher height.
Regardless of tempo, all non-accented notes should be played at a height of 3”. Accent heights will start at 12” and will be
slowly be lowered as tempo increases.
Exercise Three: Double/Triple Beat
Exercise three works on stick velocity (speed) of double and triple strokes on each hand. This is one of the most important
skills of rudimental drumming and contains the building blocks to be able to play high-quality open-stroke rolls. When playing
this exercise, it’s important to ask yourself the following:
Are your sticks rebounding to the same height for each note
Is the sound quality of each note consistent, not only from hand to hand, but first/second/third notes. Is the first
note always the loudest? (This shouldn’t be the case!)
Does your stick spend more time “in the air” as opposed to near the drum head?
Is your timing consistent? It’s common to condense patterns of two notes and elongate patters of three. Subdividing
triplets during the tap-off will help!
Here are some variations we might play during the year:
Different Heights (3”, 6”, 9”, 12”, 15”)
Filling in all rests with opposite hand. For example, all triplet 8th note rests in the first four measures will be played
with the left hand. This is a good way to check your timing and double/triple stroke interpretation. To go one step
further, play this variation with a friend who is playing alternating triplets and see how well you can line up your
notes with theirs!
Exercise Four: Diddles and Rolls
Building on the technique established in the first three exercises, exercise four starts to put it all together combining different
types of strokes at different heights, diddles using the double stroke technique, and consecutive hand-to-hand diddles (also
known as double stroke rolls). There are a couple different version of this exercise that we will play:
Version One: Just the first 8 measures all at one height. Typically we will start this at 12” but be prepared to play this
at a variety of heights.
Version Two: Just the first 8 measures with the accents. The non-accented notes will fall to 3” and the accented notes
will typically between 9” and 12”.
Version Three: The entire exercise as written.
When playing this exercise, we will always start with version one. The staff member calling out exercises will then signal
when to move onto the next version. Below are some important things to look for when playing diddles and rolls:
1. Is your stick motion consistent between the check pattern and diddle patterns? Are you approaching your stick
motion differently during diddle patters, because you shouldn’t be!
2. Does every tap have the same sound quality? How about every accent? Are you “pounding” the accents, or are you
using the correct down-stroke technique?
3. Is your diddle interpretation consistent and rhythmically accurate? It’s common to “crush” your diddles, which is
where the space between the first and second note of your double-stroke is too short. Triple diddles should be
perfect 24th notes!
We may add some variations to the three versions listed above! Examples include:
Starting off the left
Play crushed buzz rolls instead of open-stroke diddles
Tenors – Prepare this on one drum for the sake of auditions.
Exercise 5: P. Diddy Erasmus
This exercise, written by Paul Weber for the RCR Drum and Bugle Corps, is a diddle/paradiddle/paradiddlediddle exercise that
grooves from start to finish! It is 8th note based and focuses on being able to feel weight of each diddle in the back part of the
hand.
The first phrase should be played on the edge. During the crescendo in bars 9-10, move to the center locking on
count 3 of bar 10.
Dynamics will slightly vary depending on tempo, but accented notes will generally be forte with non-accented notes
at mezzopiano unless otherwise noted. Do not neglect dynamics!
Plan on playing this anywhere from 140 to 180 bpm.
Exercise 6a and 6b: Grid
Exercises 6a and 6b focus on grids, which is where you play a pattern with a rudiment and move that rudiment within that
pattern while keeping time constant. 6a focuses on stock 16th note grid in the 4-2-1 pattern with the rudiment changing in
groups of 4 while 6b is similar but the rudiment changes in groups of 3. Though the exercises are written with only accents,
we incorporate other rudiments into the exercises as well. For example:
Adding a diddle after every accent
Adding two diddles after every accent
Playing paradiddles (6a only)
Playing flams instead of accents
Double accents
Triple accents
Playing a diddle on every downbeat but still gridding the accent
Playing an accent on every downbeat and grid diddles
Many more…create your own pattern!
We can also combine patterns 6a and 6b! For example:
Playing 6a as written, while playing 6b with diddles
Playing 6b as written, while playing 6a with diddles
Many more…create your own pattern!

Exercise #6b - Pattern 3Patrick Lyons
River City Rhythm
Grid - Timing - RudimentsRCR 2017-2018
River City Rhythm Cymbal Auditions:
The following will cover the absolute essentials of how RCR approaches cymbals
including defining our basic positions, playing sounds, and our visual approach. You
should familiarize yourself with each video and become familiar with the techniques and
practices highlighted. Please take the time to make sure you understand each flip or
sound very well. I would highly recommend taking a video of yourself doing each and
comparing it to the videos seen below.
