New Berlin Art Forum COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

2017-2018 Rustic Ridge Winery

2805 State Hwy 80 Burlington Flats, NY 13315

607-965-0626

rusticridgewinery.com

For this 43rd season, the New Berlin Art Forum has chosen to honor Rustic Ridge Winery and the company’s founders, Rick and Laura Bennett. Located on the Bennett Family Farm owned and operated by the Bennett family for the last 60 years, Rustic Ridge Winery opened in November 2010 and has prided itself on serving outstanding wines and friendly, country-style service.

Rick describes the inspiration for the Rustic Ridge Winery as “a hobby out of control.” After planting over 1000 native grape vines in 2004, it was apparent that the local fluctuation in climate and weather conditions created an envi-ronment in which the vineyard yield became unreliable. After which the Ben-netts began working closely with a small, well-established winery in the Seneca Lake area of New York’s Finger Lakes Wine Region. Rustic Ridge Winery offers a diverse selection of award-winning New York State produced and bottled wines. Rick brought his recipes to the winemaker, and the association blos-somed.

Rustic Ridge Winery has been a valued supporter of the New Berlin Art Forum providing wonderful wine baskets for our organization’s raffles, as well as sup-porting our annual Program Guide through its advertisement. This is but one example of the Bennetts community generosity. Rustic Ridge has hosted many local benefits. One such is an annual fundraiser for the Citron Stars and Stripes Program for the Veteran’s Home in Utica, NY. This year a Cornhole Tournament was hosted on August 5th where over 100 people participated. That evening the Acme Acoustic Band entertained the participants playing Blues, Folk, Country, and Rock ‘n Roll Music. The proceeds are given to local Gold Star Families.

5

This past spring, the winery hosted a Vineyard Stroll raising $2500.00 in one afternoon for Relay for Life..

Rustic Ridge Winery has sponsored monthly events many featuring local musi-cians. An event pavilion was constructed in the spring of 2017, where the Ben-netts also offer this venue for reunions, weddings, showers, anniversary, grad-uation, or family parties. The winery is also a member of the Cooperstown Beverage Trail, a New York State Cuisine Trail. Noted primarily for Riesling, there are 20 different wines to choose from, so no matter your preference, at Rustic Ridge Winery you will definitely find a splendid variety to enjoy.

Rustic Ridge Winery also offers locally-produced products such as jams and jellies, maple syrup, honey, along with clothing and wine accessories. The win-ery is opened all year long, 7 days a week from 11 am to 6 pm.

The New Berlin Art Forum is grateful for the Bennetts ongoing support. Please stop by Rustic Ridge Winery and join us in support of this generous local busi-ness.

The Spirit of Johnny Cash

Harold Ford, Laura Lucy & Band

Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 7 PM

Unadilla Valley Central School Auditorium

A Tribute to Johnny Cash

“It is with great reverence for Johnny Cash, that I am inspired to continue his music and keep his torch burning with this tribute. The human struggles, challenges, and humorous adventures which Johnny Cash sang about are as prevalent today as they were throughout his career, which spanned over three generations of devoted listen-ers. The members of my Band and I strive to remain true to the humanity that was such an important part of Johnny Cash’s music.” – Harold Ford

The mission of Harold Ford is to carry on the spirit, message, and music of Johnny Cash. Tribute artist Harold Ford & Band along with Laura Lucy present a tribute to Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and beyond.

This is an exceptional performance. Possessing a stage presence, and charisma akin to

Johnny Cash, along with the deep Cash bass-baritone voice, and Cash looks, Harold’s

tribute to Johnny Cash is nothing short of eerie and ghostly. Harold’s Band, a team of

highly trained professional musicians, recreate the authentic sound of The Tennessee

Three and Johnny’s later years. Laura Lucy embodies the spirit of June Carter Cash

with her captivating presence and light hearted nature. The endearing harmonies of

Johnny and June are recreated and come alive. With a deep, bass-baritone voice and

mournful eyes, Harold Ford could be the doppelganger of “The Man in Black.” Harold

Ford’s voice and physical resemblance to Johnny Cash are unmistakable, making him a

natural as a Johnny Cash tribute artist.

New Berlin Art Forum Scholarship Announcement 2017

The New Berlin Art Forum has a winner…actually two winners! The New Berlin Art Fo-

rum gives an annual scholarship of $500 to a graduating senior continuing their educa-

tion in the Performing, Culinary, Visual or Musical Arts. This year we were very fortu-

nate to have two incredibly worthy students from our pool of applicants. Consequent-

ly, the decision was made to not only award one scholarship, but a second scholarship

of $250.00. Both scholarship winners demonstrated a life-long love of the Arts and

wrote exceptional essays for their applications.

Evan Mendoza is the scholarship winner of $500.00, to be given in the second semes-

ter of the student’s sophomore year. He has been attending Unadilla Valley Central

School District since moving to New Berlin from Long Brach, New Jersey in sixth grade.

Evan Mendoza was very much honored to be the recipient of the 2017 Art Forum

Scholarship Award upon graduation this past June. He is currently enrolled at Elmira

College, majoring in Visual Arts, and video creation looking forward to broadening his

knowledge of various mediums to which he has yet to be exposed. Graduating third in

his class, core academics always took a priority, but taking a Graphic Design and Film

course in high school allowed for his innate curiosity of the Arts to be explored. Fol-

lowing his heart proved fruitful as he ex-

celled in editing the morning announce-

ments, year book cover design, short films

presented during monthly assemblies, Com-

mencement program design, and many oth-

er collaborations among his mentors and

peers. Excited anticipation grows as Evan

nears his departure date of September 1 and

he has thanked the New Berlin Art Forum

and the community around him for the tre-

mendous support in his efforts thus far.

Michael Turner The New Berlin Art Forum congratulates Michael J. Turner, a life-long Unadilla Valley Central School District student, who has been awarded one of the 2017 New Berlin Art Fo-rum Scholarships. Michael is the son of Donna and Richard Turner. This fall, Michael will be attending SUNY Broome pursuing higher education in music and music performance.

Michael has been very active in the performing arts for 10 years. He began playing clarinet at an early age later be-coming the lead clarinetist in the high school marching band. In 9th grade, he participated in a drama club variety show where he won a lip-sync battle performing Single La-dies by Beyonce Knowels. That dance Michael referred to as one of his greatest accomplishments as the self-taught cho-reography was extremely complex. When he realized he was on stage performing, he was energetic and not nervous at all. He embraced the moment and the applause. In addi-tion, Michael has been in the high school chorus.

In December 2016, he starred in the production, A Christ-mas Carol portraying the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. The production was on a very tight two-month rehearsal sched-ule. “It was really difficult to learn all of my lines, especially

when I had a monologue. "I went outside of my comfort zone and portrayed a charac-ter who was impersonal, unlike myself. Once again, the audience was amazing. I thought that it would only be my family that would cheer for me. Instead, most of the audience was basically screaming once I walked out on stage during curtain call. I re-member that I finally decided this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

On April 28, 2017, Michael performed in the production Annie portraying the role of Oliver Warbucks, again, to a most appreciative audience. “I was really excited because musicals are mixtures of the things I love to do most which is acting and singing.”

Michael will be attending SUNY Broome to major in music and pursue a music career. His future plans are to compose his own music and become a performer on Broadway. “I want my dream to become a reality. I am very grateful for this scholarship and I won’t take it for granted, and I will strive to do the best work I am capable of doing. I devote everything to the performing arts and I am serious about my future and long-term goals. "I know if I show myself to the world, if I'm persistent, and I try my best, then I will live my dream.”

When asked what excites him most about performing, Michael said "I just try to have fun. I had so much fun performing on stage, especially when I was learning the music and choreography for the production, 'Annie.' Once you forget about the 'What if's' and all of the stage fright inside of you, you just start to have fun and enjoy yourself!"

Michael is very grateful to the New Berlin Art Forum for this scholarship and the com-munity for the ongoing support.
