Review of Pilot Year & Expansion Plan (2nd year) for McPolin 2016-2017 McPolin Pilot Implementation: Fundations Implementation Evaluation Report

- Teachers and students have been positively impacted by the adoption of Fundations curriculum at McPolin.

- The successful adoption was because of:

1. Full team grade/school participation and commitment

2. Willingness of the teams to learn and improve .. and ask for help early on

3. Instructional model adherence, data review & reporting lead to more fully realizing the benefits of the program

*This has resulted in real change, student growth and an increase in teacher confidence

Framework - Success Factors of Pilot Components of Success:

1. Champion(s) in the school to drive implementation a. Engages in Initial Fundations Training b. Collaborates with Program Director & has regular communication with leadership c. Provides insight and resources d. Member of Problem-Solving Team (RTI) e. Facilitates professional development on site f. Supports data collection and analysis g. Observes teachers & provides feedback

2. Common Planning Time & PLC’s

a. Fundations Unit Test Data guides Instruction for Tier 1

3. Instructional time with Fundations is Consistent a. 20-30 min. Tier 1 (Whole Group) b. 30 min. Tier 2 (Small Group 2nd dose)

i. Sharing students between classes according to need based upon student data

Page 3: 2017-2018 Expanding at MPES...- International Dyslexia Association Conference - Dyslexia for a Day (sponsored by PC READS) Oct/Feb Parent Teacher Conferences Phase 3 - Evaluate Refine

4. Time for Teams to Problem-Solve when red flags surface for struggling readers every 4-6 weeks.

a. RTI uses DIBELS Progress Monitoring Data and Fundations Unit Test Data to identify students & inform instruction b. Forms have been necessary to document teacher decisions

i. Making small groups ii. Individual Students

5. Engaged, Available, & Responsive School Leadership

a. Check-in’s b. Addresses impediments to successful implementation

6. Teachers commit to regular collection of Fundations Data

a. Unit Trackers with Retest in Google Folder 2017-2018 McPolin Expansion Plan: During the 2016-2017 pilot year, the Second grade teachers completed 10 out of the 17 (Level 2) units of instruction. The Wilson Fundations literacy consultants expressed how common it is during the first year of implementation, for 2nd grade students to move slower through the units compared to Kindergarten and 1st grade. This is due to the 2nd grade students not having been exposed to Fundations in the prior years. Therefore, the Third grade teachers can continue with Unit 11 in Level 2 and plan to finish Level 2. This pattern could be maintained each following year. Fundations Level 3 includes more “exceptions” to the rules and is considered to be advanced. The Wilson Fundations literacy consultant shared that students who have solid K, Level 1 and Level 2 Fundations instruction will benefit without having Level 3. The decision for further consideration of how the transition from 2nd to 3rd grade occurs will be reassessed during the Spring of 2018. We need more voices, including the third grade teachers, to make any decisions regarding the future of third grade students with Fundations in the district. (Regarding Budget - 3rd grade consumables would never be ordered. 2nd Grade consumables follow students to 3rd grade. Third grade teachers need first year teacher kit and student durables as one time cost)
