Class Descriptions

3-D Art and Animation (9-12) In this course, students will be introduced to the powerful multipurpose 3-D software, Blender. Students will create and manipulate high-quality models and environments including, but not limited to, vehicles, buildings, characters, and more. Students will learn to create photo-realistic textures and materials to place on their models along with learning how to light, composite, and render these high-quality scenes. Along with this, they will learn about rigging and animating different models as well as how to print their models with a 3D printer. Instructor: Ryan Warren – Tue. & Thur. Technology: 5 credits Career Technical Education (CTE) (Year 1)

3-D Productions (9-12) In this course, students will take all the knowledge they learned in 3-D Art and Animation, as well as advanced knowledge, taught in this course, to work on and develop an animated short film with the whole class. 3-D Productions will push student's creativity to a whole new level by having them and their classmates work together to storyboard, conceptualize, plan, model, sculpt, texture, rig, animate, and so much more. By the end of the class, they will have created something truly special. Prerequisite: 3-D Art and Animation Instructor: Ryan Warren – Tue. & Thur. Technology: 5 credits Career Technical Education (CTE) (Year 2) American Literature (11-12) American Literature will examine the roots of American thought and literature from the founding of the colonies in America to the present day. We will examine primary and secondary literature about the founding of the nation of The United States as well as the many voices that have developed over time in literature. May be taken in conjunction with U. S. History or alone. Instructor: Joan Norton – Tues. 9:00 or 10:30 A-G English: 5 credits

Apparel Design & Construction (CTE year 1) (9-12) This is a beginning course in clothing construction. Topics include pattern selection and layout, selection of fashion fabrics and interfacings, seam finishes and design features. Students will develop their sewing skills though the construction of garments and samples utilizing professional sewing techniques. Activities include hand and sewing machine techniques, basic stitches, taking body measurements, identifying sewing tools and parts of the machine, and practice basic techniques (stitches, sizing, pressing, and finishing). Around the World (K-1) In this class students will "travel" around the world to learn about the different cultures. Students will make a passport to show the countries visited each week. Students will participate in stories, arts and crafts, games, music and simple cooking activities from these countries. Instructor: Juspreet Bains – Mon. Extra Curricular Activity

Art Appreciation (9-12) Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the many elements of art. In addition, students will learn about a new artist's life each week and then do a project that relates to that artist's style or subject matter. Instructor: Nancy McLean – Tues. A-G Visual/Performing Arts: 5 credits Art History (9-12) Students will learn how events, leaders and movements from ancient history to modern times have directly affected the world of art and the artists themselves. Students will build an art portfolio of work showing different styles of art from all across the world and the centuries. Instructor: Nancy McLean – Mon. A-G Visual/Performing Arts: 5 credits Associated Student Body - ASB (9-12) The purpose of ASB is to provide fun, healthy, social events for the high school students to help develop the high school culture. There will be an adult supervisor to set up the structure of the events, but it is the student volunteers that will make the fun events happen. Instructor: Lovedeep Bains – Mon. Leadership Skills Support Break with Games (4-8) This is a time for students to bring a snack or sack lunch and play games with their peers. Sign up is required. Instructor: Rotating Teachers – Wed. Extra Curricular Activity Biblical Influence in Literature, Culture, Art, & History (9-12) Spring Only During the 2nd semester, weekly class covers the text “The Bible and It’s Influence.” This is an academic study of the Bible's influence: (a) in literature, (b) as literature (the literary elements in the Bible), (c) in history (specific historical events, trends, developments, and movements), (d) in cultural connections (music, art, theater, architecture, history, public policy, ceremonies and rituals). Each student is to provide his/her own Bible (any translation is acceptable), because there will be assigned passages to read (that are not in the textbook). C-STEM Coding & Robotics (9-12) This club is intended for high school students who want to explore the world of coding robotics. Students will learn basic coding skills, complete C-STEM challenges and work toward projects that culminate in a UC Davis competition in the spring. No credit. Instructor: Kristina O’Brien – Tues. Calculus (10-12) This is an advanced mathematics course. Topics include single variable differential and integral calculus, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. Prerequisite: must have completed a pre-calculus course or equivalent with a C or higher. Instructor: Robb Gibbs - Mon., Tues. & Thur. A-G Mathematics: 5 credits California History (4) In this stand-alone CA History class, students will cover the 4th grade state standards using a textbook as well as by doing projects and reports. Instructor: Nancy McLean - Thur. Social Science CEO Apprentice (4-8) The entrepreneur will learn how to start and run a business, including design thinking, responsibilities, payroll and taxes, pricing, understanding your competition, target markets, and calculating your break-even point to make a profit. Instructor: Lois Langehaug – Mon. Extra Curricular Activity

Character First (4-8) Character First offers lessons to help each student build character qualities in their life, home, classroom and community. Students will learn to define a character quality, learn 5 methods to perform that character quality in daily life, learn about historical figures who demonstrated that quality, and learn about animals that instinctively survive using that character quality. Students will learn about qualities such as diligence, compassion, patience, attentiveness, truthfulness, gratefulness, responsibility, and many more. Chemistry (10-12) SNAP, CRACKLE, POP! It is NOT just Rice Crispies and Periodic Tables in this class. We will be exploring how chemistry is used every day and how it applies to everyone’s life. Included in the course study is food chemistry, historical value of science, chemical engineering of Bucky balls, precious gems, stained class, nanotechnology, chemical simulations and experiments. You will test the limits by measuring the production of S’mores, brownies, cookies, fudge, determine how many atoms are in foil, determine types of reactions using college level chemical analysis, and explore the gas laws using marshmallows. Your everyday questions about science will be answered about airbags, fire extinguishers, traveling to the moon, gemstones, biodiesel and hydrogen fuel, tie-dyeing, egg dyeing and more! As part of this course, students will complete chemistry problems, balance equations, conduct experiments, keep a lab notebook and do projects. Honors students will take a mid-term and a final. Please request HONORS at the time of enrollment in the course. Students will receive a grade for lab and homework. The lab instructor will grade labs and assessments, while the parent will grade the homework. Instructor: Tracy Nelson - Mon. & Thur. A-G Physical Science: 5 credits Chess Club Calling all K-12 students who enjoy playing chess! Want to get better at chess, or want to learn how to play chess? Come prepared to learn, to actively participate and to have fun! This club is a great way to strengthen your skills as you meet weekly, and attend local tournaments. Instructor: Meredith Curry – Wed. Extra Curricular Activity Choir Music (2-6) Students are taught proper enunciation and clarity of speech, singing techniques, music theory, music history, and performance protocol. Instructor: Jeanne McClard– Mon. Extra Curricular Activity Coding & Gaming (2-3) This club exposes the child to computational thinking, in a playful manner! This is a hands on class where students will learn the basics of coding by starting out with block based programming to design a simple video game. Students will slowly move over to a more complex programming with real world programming languages. Instructor: Ryan Warren – Mon. Extra Curricular Activity Commercial Piloting and UAVs (10-12) Can you legally operate a drone commercially? This course prepares students to take the 107 federal license exam that is required by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to operate a UAV in shared national airspace. (Open to students who took Advanced Model Aeronautics and UAVs and/or Seniors of the 2017 – 18 school year) Instructor: Dave McCreary- Mon. & Wed. Creative Crochet for Beginners to Advanced (4-8) Everyone will have the chance to learn the art of crochet and work on simple to advanced level projects. Crocheting is not just a fun hobby. Crochet and knitting have so many benefits, such as improvement of fine motor coordination, reading, math, comprehension, critical thinking and problem-solving. It also boosts confidence and fosters a sense of accomplishment. It can alleviate symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression. And finally, it sharpens memory. As you can see, when your child learns to crochet they will enhance many areas of their life. Instructor: Samira Fraher – Mon. Extra Curricular Activity

Creative Writing (9-12) Designed to tap into the power of images, this course will allow total creativity and freedom of expression, while students are inspired and guided by specific exercises designed to tap into memories, ideas, and thoughts. Although there will be no specific styles of essays assigned, the release of creative juices will benefit students in other forms of writing. Instructor: Serene Turner – Mon. Drawing & Painting (4-8) Students will explore basic elements of art as they learn drawing techniques for one semester and painting techniques for the other semester. Instructor: Nancy McLean - Wed. 10:00 or 11:00 Extra Curricular Activity Early Yarn and Needlecraft This class, designed for “pre-knitters,” will introduce some yarn and needlecraft, such as finger knitting, loom knitting, and plastic canvas applications (e.g. bookmarks, coasters, pencil cases, tissue box holders). Crocheting and knitting have so many benefits, such as improvement of fine motor coordination, focus and problem-solving. It also boosts confidence and fosters a sense of accomplishment. Fashion & Textile Design (CTE year 2) (9-12) This is an intermediate course in clothing construction. This course emphasizes construction of a capsule wardrobe focusing on a variety of novelty fashion fabrics. The course emphasizes personal fitting and custom dressmaking utilizing intermediate sewing techniques. Activities include choosing patterns for their size and shape, adjust the fit of garments, choosing design, installing zippers and buttonholes and overall neatness of product. Forensic Science Laboratory (9-12) Join our CSI team in this class filled with crime and mystery. You become the criminologist, forensic scientist, and the crime scene investigator. You and your CSI team will learn techniques in fingerprinting, handwriting analysis, blood spatter trajectory, identifying pollens, poisons and fibers. The fun doesn’t end there! Study famous crimes, solve a murder, and test unknown powders. Crime scenes are documented, shoe and tire prints analyzed, and bullet and body positions calculated. We will send that criminal packing! Note: We do not cover heinous crimes. Students will receive a grade for lab and homework. The lab instructor will grade labs and assessments, while the parent will grade the homework. Instructor: Tracy Nelson – Thur. A-G Life Science: 5 credits Foundations in Personal Finance (9-12) Set your high school student up for financial success by enrolling in this class. Utilizing finance expert Dave Ramsey's high school curriculum "Foundations in Personal Finance", your student will gain financial literacy skills, develop informed money management strategies, learn how to gain financial well-being and foster an understanding and appreciation of ethical money management. This class will be offered as a club for no credit. Instructor: Kelly Kolb – Tue. Extra Curricular Activity

Fun with Legos (K-4) & (5-8) Building with Legos teaches simple mechanics and encourages problem-solving. Lego Mindstorms teaches basic robotics, and programming. Instructor: Alessandra Aplsey – Wed. Extra Curricular Activity Garden & Agriculture (9-12) Students will learn all aspects of gardening: planter beds, composting, planting vegetables, herbs, and flowers, organic techniques, fruit tree care, and have lots of fun. Text: Math Matters I & II Instructor: Lois Langehaug– Mon. & Thurs. Mathematics: 5 credits Integrated Math 2 (9-12) Integrated Math 2 is the second course of a three-course sequence. Integrated 2 will extend the laws of exponents to rational exponents; compare key characteristics of quadratic functions with those of linear and exponential functions; create and solve equations and inequalities involving linear, exponential, and quadratic expressions; extend work with probability; and establish criteria for similarity of triangles based on dilations and proportional reasoning. Integrated Math 3 (9-12) This course is the third of three courses in a series that uses a more integrated approach to cover the same algebra and geometry concepts and skills that are included in the traditional three course series. The problem solving, models, and technology used will foster connections among the various strands of mathematics and develop concepts from multiple perspectives. This class may be taken by students who have completed Integrated Math II or Geometry. Instructor: Dawn Flinn – Mon., Tue., & Thurs. A-G Mathematics: 5 credits

Integrated Science 1 (9-10) Begin your high school science year with a BANG! We will jump right into experiments that defy the physics of gravity, test the limits of chemistry, explore the heredity of traits in biology, and search the universe in earth science. Explore the forces of physics: make a roller coaster, have balloon races, cook apples in a solar oven, get a shock out of circuitry, and build a motor. Explore molecules in chemistry: create candy molecules, find the half-life with M&Ms, analyze mystery powders, taste the sweetness of science, and make a polymer bouncy ball. Explore the creation of life in biology: see microscopic creatures, perform DNA extraction, build a DNA molecule, count bugs, dissect plants and animals, and create an ecosystem. Explore the universe and our home planet: collect and test minerals in rocks, make a stream to observe erosion, track tornadoes and volcanoes, and measure the planets and stars. Maybe you just want to have fun with science then this class is for you. We cover it all in the first of a series of courses. Take one class or take them all and advance to the NEXT LEVEL. Integrated Science 2 STEM Laboratory (9-12) Ever wondered what it would be like to engineer a bridge…out of toothpicks! Have you ever wanted to try creating your own special effects masks? How about perform surgery? Do you want to learn to cook? This is the class for you! You will be working alone and in teams to explore the world of engineering in the areas of chemistry, physics, biology, and earth science. This class has it all! Try your hand at creating your own science experiments by making soap, a race car, cookies, and a septic tank. Grow your own garden, test the soil, and learn about pesticides. Perform experiments to discover heredity. Extract DNA from your very own radiated seeds. Integrated Science 3 Global Issues Laboratory (9-12) Discover what you can do as a scientist superhero to help save our world from hunger, thirst, and danger. Explore chemistry through the design of a Samurai sword and creating fireworks. Study food science and agriculture by making cinnamon rolls, cheese, and jams. Learn about physics and the earthy by studying wind, water, solar, and nuclear power. Discuss cancer, cures, and sunscreen. Learn about food preservation, disaster plans, cloning, genetically engineered products, living on other planets, building amusement parks, engineer a rocket, test the limits of the human body, discover the anatomy of various animals and plants, and more! The world has problems and we are here to fix them. You are the new superhero in this science adventure. Students will receive a grade for lab and homework. Intro to Sociology (9-12) Sociology is the social science that studies groups of people and the society they inhabit, focusing on how groups create and even define a society. Sociologists generate theories about social issues such as the role of gender, crime, age, racism, and culture. This course serves as a good introduction to the study of Sociology and will give you a solid foundation if you choose to take a Sociology course at the college level. Math Intervention (4-12) The Math Intervention Program is designed to provide an opportunity for students to acquire skills they may have missed in previous years while continuing to progress in their current math course. Eligibility is determined by placement test scores, teacher recommendations, or both. The program assesses the individualized needs and operating level of each student and assigns mastery skills accordingly. Middle School Science (6-8) We will be doing science like scientists do science rather than through disconnected textbook activities. Middle School Science is a course where we will be learning the big ideas in earth, space and physical sciences through experiential learning, project based units and scientific inquiry. Supplemental Support Novel Units (4-6) Students will read and discuss wonderful, inspiring novels and analyze characters, plots, and settings. Pre-Algebra / Mathematics Pre-Calculus (9-12) Pre-Calculus is college preparatory mathematics for high school students. This is the next course for students who completed Integrated 3 or Algebra 2. In addition to covering all of the key concepts found in traditional trigonometry, pre-calculus, or math analysis courses, it emphasizes several big ideas that form a foundation for calculus and other college mathematics curricula. Reading Intervention (K-8) Beginning Level: Using the SIPPS Program, this Beginning Level reading intervention is for students in the Early Stage of Reading with emphasis on the Systematic Introduction of Phonemes, Phonics, and Sight Words. This level is generally for K through 1st graders; focus is on reading short vowel words and sight words. These strategies will be compiled with fluency practice of decodable stories keyed to phonics and sight words being taught. Students find this class to be active and engaging. Extension Level: Using the SIPPS Program, this Extension Level reading intervention is for students in the Second Stage of Reading with emphasis on the Systematic Introduction of Phonemes, Phonics, and Sight Words. This level is generally for 2nd through 3rd graders; focus is on reading single syllable words with complex vowels and sight words. These strategies will be compiled with fluency practice of decodable stories keyed to phonics and sight words being taught. Students find this class to be active and engaging. Challenge Level: Using the SIPPS Program, this is a reading intervention class for students who have done fairly well in the initial stages of learning to read, but are struggling in the third stage of learning to read, the polysyllabic/morphemic phase. Extensive experience reading polysyllabic words with the teacher’s guidance, increases student proficiency, and hence opening the door for better comprehension. This level is generally for 3rd through 4th graders; focus is on reading polysyllabic words with accuracy and increasing fluency. Students find this class to be active and engaging. Advanced Level: This course is the next step next step after SIPPS Reading Intervention Classes, or for a child needing fluency practice. We will be doing reader's Theater, Choral Reading, Read Alouds as well as working on reading strategies for comprehension: annotation, questioning and interacting with the text. It is twice a week for an hour. Students will be assessed for appropriate placement. RESOURCE CENTER USE The Resource Centers are open to all students during normal school hours under any of the following conditions:

• Direct supervision by parent for students whose classes occur intermittently. • Supervision by teacher during regularly scheduled classes, events, or

meetings. • General Resource Center Use will be limited to no more than 3 hours per day. The Resource Centers have adopted the following basic expectations:

Students are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct and Policies outlined in the Student-Parent Handbook found on CORE’s website at www.coretca.org. Parents will be notified of any difficulties. Repetitive or severe infractions may result in suspension of center use privileges. All students must be signed in every time they are present at a center. Please indicate on the student online registration form if your HS student is NOT allowed to leave the center. Prompt drop-off before and pick-up after classes and activities is required. If space allows, students may enroll up to five (5) classes per semester. Students who are on a waiting list will be enrolled based on waiting list timestamp with priority given to seniors and high school students who are on a UC a-g track.
