2017 - 2018 Cheerleading Levels

The following chart is a tool used to determine your level for all star cheerleading. There may be exceptions to the rule

each season depending on team needs, athlete expertise in stunting, personal strengths and any other factor the coaches

deem necessary. Coach decisions on all team placements will be based on this chart as well as coach discretion.

The skills below are considered to be mastered. Mastered is defined as the point in which an athlete can perform the skill

by themselves with near perfect technique while in performance. A coach spotting a skill or an athlete simply performing it

once does not satisfy a mastered status. Athletes who are working on skills and their progressions may help coaches

when determining team placements but does not guarantee a spot in a certain level.

REMEMBER ….. PERFECTION BEFORE PROGRESSION.

** Level 4.2 is designed for those individuals with Level 2 Tumbling and Level 4 Stunts. It allows more advanced stunting

for seniors who may not have reached advanced level tumbling just yet.

** Final determination of your Level will be determined by the Twisters Coaching Staff.

Please Note: Skills DO NOT guarantee a position on a team. Coaches will consider not only the skill level of the athlete

but past attitude and commitment levels. Coaches may also move athletes who are not only entirely at level in order to fill

the needs of a team. Example: A Level 2 flyer may be moved to a Level 3 team because that team requires a flyer and

the Level 2 team has enough flyers. This will be done on an as needed basis.

What can I expect at All Star & Prep Evaluations?

Team evaluations will consist of a variety of athletic ability evaluations such as endurance, strength, jump, tumbling and

flexibility drills. Most importantly, we will be looking for athletes who demonstrate a positive attitude and a willingness to

learn. With very rare exceptions we have a team for everyone, so experience is generally not necessary to cheer or dance

at Twisters Cheer Athletics.

Please wear shorts and a t-shirt or tank top, clean indoor running shoes and long hair tied back, current Twister athletes

are asked to wear a Twisters t-shirt/tank/top. Jewelry and gum are not allowed in the gym. We also ask that all cell

phones be left at home.

Attendance

Competitive cheerleading is a TEAM sport; therefore, ALL practices, choreography and competitions are mandatory.

An absence is anytime the athlete is not at practice regardless of the reason

Attendance will be taken throughout the week at team practices, any extra practices (given a 2-week notice) as well

as team skills camp, choreography camp and competitions

If attendance becomes an issue, an Alternate for the team may be utilized

The 4-3-2

Start of the season through the summer: we understand there will be vacations and staff will be proactive with families

but we would like to see no more than 4 missed practices throughout the summer

August - December: 3 misses allowed

January 1 - end of season: 2 misses allowed

Injuries

If you incur an injury that prevents you from practicing, you still need to attend your team practices (sitting out on the side

and/or doing what you can) to keep with the routine and learn choreography. If an injury keeps you from participating in

practice, Twisters may need a doctor’s note clearing you to return before you may be allowed to participate again. Ath-

letes who miss a practice or practices due to injury may be pulled from the routine for the next competition and may not be

returned to the same position for any subsequent competitions.

Time Management, Vacations and Appointments

Please manage your school time, as it is your first priority. Cheer is an extra-curricular activity and we insist that you

make every effort to keep your grades high. Time management is expected and we believe that all athletes are capable

or performing well in school, while still keeping their commitment to their Twisters team. Although school is the #1 priori-

ty, homework/tests and studying are not valid excuses to miss practice and let down your Team. The excuse “I can’t

come to practice today because I have a big test to study for and homework to do” is unacceptable. School is your top

priority, but don’t let down your teammates because of your lack of time management and proper study habits. If you can-

not manage your time properly to be at every practice, you should not be on a competitive cheer/dance team.

If your child chooses to participate in other activities/sports, we require that they make Twisters Cheer Athletics their first

priority. When there is a conflict, it needs to be communicated immediately to the coach(es), in order to come up with a

solution. If you predict ongoing conflicts, please do not join a cheerleading team.

Regular Doctor/Dentist Appointments

Regular Doctor and Dentist appoints must not conflict with the established schedule of practices and competitions.

Please book on non-practice days/times.

Family Vacations during the Competition Season

We respectfully request that families do not take holidays during our competitive months of November through mid-April,

with the exception of Christmas break and March Break. Athletes and families need to understand that absences may

result in being placed in new positions, choreography, stunts and/or formations upon their return. Teams will run practices

in the most effective way possible when an athlete is missing, putting the team’s needs before the absent athlete’s needs.

Routine & Level Changes

Throughout the season coaches will make changes to routines for a variety of reasons. Athletes should expect this and be

prepared for their roles within a routine to change. Coaches and management also reserve the right to change a team’s

competitive division during the season. This includes moving a team up or down a level.

Gym Rules

Twisters Cheer Athletics’ gym rules and policies will be on hand at Team Evaluations. Please review all rules and policies.

Anyone who wishes to participate in any activity at Twisters Cheer Athletics must complete a Participant Waiver Form.

Athletes under 18 must have this form signed by their own parent or guardian. Waiver forms can be emailed to you by

request (email [email protected]) or will be on hand at Team Evaluations.

Parents’ Association & Fundraising

Twisters Cheer Athletics is fortunate to have a parents association that offers a variety of fundraising opportunities for our

athletes. Fundraising is 100% optional. Please note that credits earned from fundraising are not available for use until the

parent association has completed their accounting on the fundraiser and transferred the funds to Twisters Cheer Athletics.

Once the transfer of funds is made, the credits will be available for use towards tuition, travel and other expenses. This

transfer of funds can take up to six weeks to process and credit will not be issued until this transfer is complete.

For more information about the Parents’ Association please contact us at [email protected]

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have no cheer or tumbling experience. Can I still be on a competitive team?

A: In most cases, yes. As long as we do not have more athletes at placement than we have positions for, all athletes will be

placed on either an all-star or all-star prep team. If we have more athletes than positions, or if an athlete requires additional

time to work on his or her skills, some athletes may be recommended for a pre-competitive team.

Q: I cannot attend team evaluations. What can I do to get on a team?

A: Please call the gym to arrange for a private assessment. We will make arrangements for another time that fits your sched-

ule.

Q: Do I need to attend all of the team evaluation dates?

A: No, you only need to attend one team evaluation date although you are welcome to attend more if you would like.

Q: I only want to do all-star prep, do I still need to attend team evaluations?

A: Yes. Attending placement will help to ensure a position on a team.

Q: My age fits into a younger division but I want to be on an older team (eg., I am junior age and want to be on a senior

team). Can I request to be on the older team?

A: We strive to have well balanced teams in regards to both age and ability. If there is a team for your skills at your age division

you will not be moved to the next division unless the coaches determine that a specific spot needs to be filled. Athletes should

experience what it is like to be the youngest on a team and the oldest for a well-rounded athletic experience.

Q: Why is there summer training for all-star teams?

A: Taking the entire summer off has a negative impact on athlete’s skills especially at the higher levels. Tumbling skills that are

not practiced on a regular basis are often “lost” and skill level regresses. Summer is also an important time to build new skills

and bond with your team.

Q: Do I have to take tumbling in the summer?

A: Summer tumbling is highly encouraged as it is a great time for athletes to learn new skills and master existing skills.

Q: I am not able to come to any spring/summer practices. Can I still be on a competitive team?

A: Summer training is important as it is a time to build skills and bond as a team. We understand that families will take vaca-

tions but expect athletes to be at the majority of practices. There are no team practices July 29th - August 6th so we encour-

age families to take vacations during this time. We are also running mandatory team training camps and choreography as listed

on page 8. If you can not attend summer practices (June - August) and/or summer training camp/choreography you must notify

us at evaluations.
