PASTOR’S CORNER
Two Mothers
We praise and honor God for these “Two Mothers”, Eve and Mary,
as we celebrate Mother’s Day. God created Eve, the mother of mothers, in
the Garden of Eden in the creation story. Eve had a very important part in
the birth narrative that still stands and exists today. God brought man and
woman together as one and he blessed them to procreate. Eve gave birth to
the first human being in Genesis 4:1, “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and
she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the
Lord.” (KJV). I believe these two facts in the Old Testament are great rea-
sons to honor God and thank him for Eve’s contribution to His creation, but
more importantly, for establishing how a man and woman shall come to-
gether as one and have a family with sons and daughters.
God, in the scope of His own creation, did experience some disap-
pointments with Eve because of her sinning against Him in Garden of Eden.
However, God spared her, shared His mercy and grace, and forgave her.
Afterward, He ran Eve and Adam out of the paradise of paradises. God sup-
ported them but they had to work hard for their food, clothing, and shelter,
from that day until their death. In short, Eve was one of the first women and
mother whose name stands in history and was sanctioned by God in the Old
Testament.
The Old Testament included many women who made huge contri-
butions in the narrative story. God was patient with His servants in the Old
Testament for many generations and mothers had a leading role. God estab-
lished the foundation and man also had a leading role but women like Sarah,
Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel played a major role because of the motherhood
intuition in the Holy Bible. With all of these men and women in the Bible
something was missing because of the sin committed in the creation story.
God was not pleased with the brokenness of men and women so we
had the ending of the Old Testament. God took a big step and established
the New Testament. Once again God used a woman, a woman named Mary,
as an example of His love to expound the Gospel. She was a virgin, totally
obedient, and the conception was unique. “Now the birth of Jesus Christ
was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph,
before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”
Matthew 1:18 (KJV). Jesus Christ, our Messiah, was begotten by God,
UMW Social Action
Committee is collecting your
old eyeglasses through the end of May. The
glasses will be sent to the Lion's Club where
they clean, sort by prescription strength and
package them. These recycled glasses are
then distributed to people in need in low and
middle income communities where they will
have the greatest impact. There is a collection
box in the windowsill in the hallway behind
the choir loft. This is a one-time collection,
so please get them in by the end of May!

meaning that it was a holy immaculate conception and Mary’s first birth. This second mother, Mary, did
not know her husband Joseph until after Jesus was born. Mary was viewed as the earthly mother of Jesus,
the Savior of the world. It was only Jesus who was able to redeem Adam and Eve and the entire world of
the sin they had committed against God in the Garden of Eden.
In summary, today, I personally honor all mothers and those who have taken a motherly role in someone’s
life. Mothers have come a long way from the Garden of Eden times and the Gospels. Mothers have a very
important role in the lives of all with whom they are in contact. I salute you and may God continue to bless
you. Happy Mother’s Day!

Mebane UMC would like to welcome Ms. Karen Smith as a new nursery
attendant. Karen began her position on April 23rd. She grew up in Buena
Vista, VA, and lived in Blacksburg, VA, for five years before moving to Mebane in 2013. She is a
graduate of Bridgewater College and taught seven years before taking off to stay at home. Karen
is married to her high school sweetheart, Jacob, who is a research scientist. They have an eight
month old named Jackson who will also be a part of the nursery class. She is a member of the
Mebane Women's Club and in her free time she likes to read and spend time outdoors. Karen is
thankful for the opportunity to work with the little ones at MUMC!
There's a Song in the Air... It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood...yes, it is beautiful in the early mornings
these days. As my son and I got out of the car the other
morning, a glorious sunrise was greeting us...and then, we pause - as there was an
overabundance of sound taking place all around us - birds, lots and lots of birds -
singing with such grace!! I tell my son, "The birds already know the happiness
found in the changing seasons. They do not need someone pointing out to them that
the sun is rising earlier, they are taking advantage of the gift of spring. They are so
happy about it, that they are exclaiming it to anyone awake earlier enough to hear
them".
What a marvelous thing to witness God in action with the break of dawn...for see-
ing such a God wink reminds you that in every day, there's a song in the air...
