Our principles (theten pillars)ofacompetitive, attractive, well working PhD Program

Page 62: 2017 11 10 abc ph d 33nd cycle welcomeday

1 – Doctoral Candidates aretrainedproducing original research

Researchtrainingisthroughresearchitself,workingwithotherresearchers,mainlyintheABCDepartment.Candidate’sactivityisembeddedinourinstitutionalactivity(SistematicaCollaborazione all’internoinprogrammidiricercadipartimentali)

[Salzburg Principles,1and2]

Page 63: 2017 11 10 abc ph d 33nd cycle welcomeday

2 – PhD candidates aretrained asindependent (mentored)researchers

Mentors (tutor,supervisor,advisor)arecounsellors,trainers,bosses ,andtheirqualities are:

– Credibility– Integrity– Confidence– Cooperation

Mentorship means toinvolve, toofferopportunities, also forlearning fromerrors andbearing responsibilities.

[Salzburg Principles,N.4:Early StageResearchers,andN.5,Thecrucial role ofsupervision …]

Page 64: 2017 11 10 abc ph d 33nd cycle welcomeday

3 – PhD trainingis tailored ontheCandidateandhis/her objectives

Each Candidatedefines,withtheTutorhis/her Research andTrainingPlan (R&Tplan):– Alot ofresearch activity about a

chosen topic (66-85%).– Someformal training(few),to

gainacommonstarting level andtofill possible gaps, toget basicskills (e.g.research managementandcommunication)andtobeupdated

Page 65: 2017 11 10 abc ph d 33nd cycle welcomeday

4 – PhD candidates arecontinuouslyreviewed andassessed

ABC-PhD:study +work+internal review and external assessment– Mentorshipcomestogetherwithsystematicreview (6Milestones)andindependent assessment(byexternalexperts)ofcandidate’sprojectsandproducts

– Results areplanned andexpected fromthefirstyear

[Salzburg Principles,N.5,Thecrucial role ofsupervision andassessment]

Page 66: 2017 11 10 abc ph d 33nd cycle welcomeday

5 – Strongrelationswithotherresearchers intheglobalnetwork

There arethousands ofresearchers inEurope, hundrieds ofthousands intheworld:themost ofthem works onsimilarprojects andtopics.

[Salzburg Principles,N.9,Increasing mobility]

Page 67: 2017 11 10 abc ph d 33nd cycle welcomeday

6 – Amanagementsystem designedtoimprove our performances

[Salzburg Recommendation 2.7,Quality andaccountability]

Page 68: 2017 11 10 abc ph d 33nd cycle welcomeday

7 – Highlevel andwidedisciplinarspectrum doctoral trainingoffer

Thewhole PhD Schooloffers acomplex andwidesetofcourses onmay topics anddisciplines, withthebestinternational teachers andabout themost actual researchquestions.TheProgramadds agood numberofstrategic andspecialistic coursesandresearch workshopsabout ourmain topics

[Salzburg Principles,N.3:Diversity]

Page 69: 2017 11 10 abc ph d 33nd cycle welcomeday

8 – Aneffective recruitment process

1.Open,efficient,transparent andsupportive recruitment procedures ,internationally comparable andtailored totheadvertised positions.2.Aselection based ontheresearchofthecompromiseamong youngerspotential, personalmotivation andproved competencies.
