Who is Saint Maximilian Kolbe? St. Maximilian Kolbe, Martyr of Charity Memorial - Monday, August 14th

St. Maximilian was born Raymond Kolbe in Poland, January 8, 1894. In 1910, he entered the Conventual Franciscan Order. He was sent to study in Rome where he was ordained a priest in 1918. Father Maximilian returned to Poland in 1919 and began spreading his Mili a of the Immaculata movement of Marian consecra on (whose

members are also called MIs), which he founded on October 16, 1917. In 1927, he established an evangeliza on center near Warsaw called Niepokalanów, the “City of the Immaculate.” By 1939, the City had expanded from eighteen friars to nearly 900, making it the largest Catholic religious house in the world. To be er “win the world for the Immaculata,” the friars u lized the most modern prin ng and administra ve techniques. This enabled them to publish countless cateche cal and devo onal tracts, a daily newspaper with a circula on of 230,000 and a monthly magazine with a circula on of over one million. Maximilian started a radio sta on and planned to build a mo on picture studio–he was a true “apostle of the mass media.” He established a City of the Immaculata in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1930, and envisioned missionary centers worldwide. Maximilian was a ground-breaking theologian. His insights into the Immaculate Concep on an cipated the Marian theology of the Second Va can Council and further developed the Church’s understanding of Mary as “Mediatrix” of all the graces of the Trinity, and as “Advocate” for God’s people. In 1941, the Nazis imprisoned Father Maximilian in the Auschwitz death camp. There he offered his life for another prisoner and was condemned to slow death in a starva on bunker. On August 14, 1941, his impa ent captors ended his life with a fatal injec on. Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian as a “Martyr of Charity” and “Patron Saint of our difficult century” in 1982. St. Maximilian Kolbe is the patron of journalists, families, prisoners, the pro-life movement and the chemically addicted.

Marytown – the Na onal Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe, is located in Libertyville, IL in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Marytown is called the “Third city of the Immaculate” (a er Niepokalanow, Poland and Nagasaki, Japan) and is a ministry of the Conventual Franciscans Friars of St. Bonaventure Province. Marytown includes a Franciscan Friary, a contemporary Retreat and Conference Center, the Marytown Press – Catholic Books and Gi s, historic Chapels for liturgical life, and numerous outdoor shrines and rosary gardens.

Marytown is the Na onal Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe as decreed by the U.S. Catholic Bishops. The Na onal Shrine is a place of pilgrimage for the faithful and is dedicated to promo ng the witness and life of St. Maximilian, a Conventual Franciscan friar and priest, martyred at Auschwitz.

At the very heart of Marytown is Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, considered one of the most beau ful pilgrimage sites in the na on. The Chapel has been a sanctuary of perpetual Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament since 1928. The Chapel is open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for Eucharis c Adora on and prayer. daily masses and four mes daily we celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours with the public. Marytown serves the spiritual needs of a broad community of people – locally and na onally – through our Adora on ministry, daily masses, frequent confession schedule, spiritual direc on and spiritual retreats.

On Tuesday, Catholics and many other Chris ans will celebrate the feast of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God. Venerable Pope Pius XII confirmed this belief about the Virgin Mary as the perennial teaching of the Church when he defined it formally as a dogma of Catholic faith in 1950. The cons tu on also cited tes monies from the early Church fathers on the subject, and described the history of theological reflec on on many Biblical passages which are seen as indica ng that Mary was assumed into heaven following her death. Although the bodily assump on of Mary is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, Catholic tradi on iden-fies her with the “woman clothed with the sun” who is described

in the 12th chapter of the Book of Revela on. Eastern Chris ans have also tradi onally held Mary's Assump on into heaven as an essen al component of their faith. Pius XII cited several early Byzan ne liturgical texts, as well as the eighth-century Arab Chris an theologian St. John of Damascus, in his own authorita ve defini on of her assump on. In Eastern Chris an tradi on, the same feast is celebrated on the same calendar date, although typically known as the Dormi on (falling asleep) of Mary. Eastern Catholic celebra on of the Dormi on is preceded by a two-week period of fas ng which is similar to Lent.

W dniu 15 sierpnia obchodzimy Uroczystość Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, nazywaną także Świętem Matki Boskiej Zielnej ( w Polsce) bądź Matki Boskiej Korzennej (w Czechach). Uroczystość ta obchodzona jest w Kościele od V wieku - na początku występowała pod nazwą Zaśnięcie lub Przejścia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, dopiero w VII wieku w Kościele Rzymskokatolickim upowszechniła się obecna nazwa. Jest to najstarsza uroczystość maryjna i wywodzi się z przeświadczenia, że Maryja nie umarła jak zwykły człowiek, lecz została wzięta do nieba, co było nagrodą za życie wierne Bogu. Syn Boży, Jezus Chrystus, nie tylko wyniósł swoją Matkę do chwały zbawionych w niebie, ale dał nam także zapowiedź tego, co będzie również i naszym udziałem, jeśli tylko upodobnimy nasze życie do Jej życia. W krajach europejskich i w Polsce czci się Matkę Boską Wniebowziętą jako patronkę ziemi i jej bujnej roślinności. Z tą maryjną uroczystością związana jest starożytna tradycja liturgiczna, oddająca hołd Maryi wraz z poświęceniem na Jej cześć leczniczych ziół. Od IX wieku w święto Wniebowzięcia składa się Maryi ofiary płodów ziemi: zioła, warzywa, owoce i kwiaty, które symbolizują Jej duchową pełnię, jako "najdorodniejszego ziemskiego owocu" i „najpiękniejszego kwiata ludzkości”. W polskiej tradycji ludowej uroczystość w Święto Matki Bożej Zielnej liczne sanktuaria maryjne, kościoły i kaplice, wypełniają się przybyłymi wiernymi i pielgrzymami, którzy przynoszą do poświęcenia wianki zielne, bukiety kwiatów, kłosy zbóż i owoce, w szczególności w regionach wiejskich. Kiedyś ten zwyczaj był bardzo popularny, ponieważ wierzono, że pobłogosławione rzeczy nabierają mocy leczniczych. W dniu 15 sierpnia najsłynniejsze maryjne sanktuaria mają swe odpusty. Szczególnie oblegana jest przez pielgrzymów Częstochowa, a także Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, gdzie odbywają się inscenizacje Zaśnięcia Maryi oraz Jej Wniebowzięcia.

LITURGICZNE WSPOMNIENIE ŚW. MAKSYMILIANA KOLBE— Poniedziałek, 14 sierpnia 14 sierpnia Kościół katolicki wspomina św. Maksymiliana

Marię Kolbego. Rajmund Kolbe urodził się 08.01.1894 r. w Zduńskiej Woli w rodzinie tkaczy. W 1907 r. franciszkanie ze Lwowa prowadzili w Pabianicach misje. Pod wpływem ich nauk, Rajmund wraz ze swoim starszym bratem Franciszkiem, postanowił wstąpić do franciszkanów. Po ukończeniu gimnazjum w 1912 r. rozpoczął dalszą naukę w Krakowie. Stąd ze względu na jego niezwykłe

zdolności skierowano go w tym samym roku do Rzymu. 01.11.1914 r. Kolbe złożył uroczystą profesję, w czasie której obrał sobie imię Maksymilian Maria. 28.04.1918 r. Kolbe otrzymał święcenia kapłańskie. W 1919 r. wraca do Polski i w Krakowie zaczyna wydawać „Rycerza Niepokalanej”. W roku 1927 w Teresinie pod Warszawą zakłada klasztor franciszkański Niepokalanów, gdzie wraz z ojcami nadal wydaje „Rycerza Niepokalanej” i zajmuje się działalnością misyjną. Kiedy wybucha II wojna światowa, 19.09.1939 r. Niemcy przystąpili do likwidacji Niepokalanowa, o. Kolbe wraz z współbraćmi został aresztowany i umieszczony w obozie w Amtlitz. Stąd wywieziono ich do Ostrzeszowa, gdzie zostali zwolnieni 08.12.1939 r. O. Kolbe powrócił do Niepokalanowa. 17.02.1941 r. gestapo aresztuje o. Kolbego i wywozi do Warszawy na Pawiak. 25.05.941 r. przewieziono go do obozu koncentracyjnego w Oświęcimiu, gdzie dostał numer 16 670. Pod koniec lipca 1941 r. z bloku o. Maksymiliana uciekł więzień. Oburzony komendant nakazał zwołać na plac cały blok i co dziesiątego wytypowanego przez siebie więźnia skazał na śmierć głodową, w specjalnie na to przygotowanym bunkrze. Wśród przeznaczonych na śmierć znalazł się Franciszek Gajowniczek. Smutny i nieszczęśliwy szeptał, że musi opuścić żonę i dzieci. Wtenczas stała się rzecz, która zdumiała niemieckich oprawców. Z szeregu wyszedł o. Kolbe i prosił, by jego skazano na śmierć w zamian Gajowniczka. Na pytanie kata: kim jest? odparł, że „jest katolickim kapelanem. Jest samotny, a Gajowniczek ma żonę i dzieci”. I poszedł na śmierć wraz z 9 towarzyszami do bunkru śmierci. Przyzwyczajony do głodu o. Kolbe przeżył w bunkrze dwa tygodnie bez wody i chleba. Wygłodzonego oprawcy dobili zastrzykiem z fenolu. Stało się to 14.08.1941 r. w wigilię Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny. O. Kolbe miał jedynie 47 lat. 17 pazdziernika 1971 r. papież Paweł VI ogłasza o. NABOŻEŃSTWO FATIMSKIE — Niedziela, 13 sierpnia Zapraszamy na Nabożeństwo Fa mskie połączone z procesją różańcową wokół kościoła, które zostanie odprawione w niedziele, 13 sierpnia o godz. 7:00 wieczorem. Przez modlitwę różańcową rozważamy życie i postawę Matki Bożej oraz Jej Syna, Wcielonego Jednorodzonego Syna Bożego, który dla naszego zbawienia stał się człowiekiem i ofiarował swoje życie za nas na krzyżu.

Różaniec i czyściec Najświętsza Maryja Panna w Fa mie przypomniała trójce dzieci o istocie różańca oraz o istnieniu czyśćca! Odpowiadając na pytania Łucji mówiła, że Franciszek musi zmówić jeszcze wiele różańców, nim trafi do Nieba, a o Amelii, że na pewno będzie przebywać w czyśćcu do końca świata. Królowa świętych przypomniała więc nam wszystkim o zbawiennej praktyce odmawiania różańca świętego – a więc o sposobie ratowania własnej duszy.

Oferuje wręcz różaniec jako gwarancję na bezpieczne przejście z ziemi do Nieba, jak właśnie w przypadku Franciszka. Co szczególnie istotne, Matka Boża wskazuje na samą rzeczywistość istnienia czyśćca, o której tak wielu katolików, w tym niestety duchownych, zdaje się zapominać. A przecież – przypomina Maryja – wiele spośród dusz w czyśćcu czekać będzie aż do końca świata. Znaczenie modlitwy, pokuty, ofiary i umartwienia dla nawrócenia grzeszników

Ludzie współcześni, słysząc o umartwieniu i pokucie, kojarzą te hasła ze średniowieczem. Kryzys moralny ogarniający cały świat jest niezwykle poważny, wymaga ciągłej modlitwy, pokuty i ofiary. Prawda ta stale przewija się w Orędziu Matki Bożej Fa mskiej. W swojej niewinności dwoje młodszych pastuszków zrozumiało potrzebę ofiarowania się jako przebłagalne ofiary. Ale przecież apel Matki Bożej, w którym zwraca się z prośbą o modlitwę i pokutę, odnosi się również do reszty ludzkości.Zwykli śmiertelnicy mogą dużo zyskać umartwiając ciało. Praktyka ta pozwala opanować niesforne namiętności, które przechodzą pod kontrolę łaski i woli. Cierpienie bowiem łatwo staje się potęgą w sprawach Bożych. Pan Jezus odkupił ludzkość poprzez krwawą ofiarę i ogromne cierpienia znoszone na Kalwarii.

Dlaczego ustanowiono Nabożeństwo Pięciu Pierwszych Sobót?

Nabożeństwo to odpowiada pięciu rodzajom grzechów i bluźnierstw popełnianych przeciwko Niepokalanemu Sercu Maryi. Są to:

– bluźnierstwa przeciw Niepokalanemu Poczęciu;

— bluźnierstwa przeciw Jej dziewictwu; – bluźnierstwa przeciw Jej Boskiemu macierzyństwu – wpajanie nienawiści, obojętności, a nawet pogardy do Niepokalanej Matki w sercach dzieci; – bezpośrednie lżenie Jej świętych wizerunków

Ostatnie, porażające słowa Hiacynty

Zaledwie 10-letnia Hiacynta była dziewczyną nad wyraz dojrzałą. Posiadała prorocze wizje i wiele prywatnych objawień. Słowa wypowiedziane przez Hiacyntę ukazują też głębię jej duszy w obliczu moralnego upadku świata. Oto jedne z jej ostatnich słów:

- Mody, które nadejdą, będą bardzo obrażać Pana. Osoby, które służą Bogu, nie mogą iść za głosem mody. W Kościele nie ma zmiennych mód. Jezus jest zawsze ten sam.

- Lekarzom brak światła i wiedzy, by leczyć chorych, bo brak im miłości Boga.

- Księża powinni zajmować się tylko sprawami Kościoła. Księża powinni być czyści, bardzo czyści. Nieposłuszeństwo kapłanów i zakonników wobec ich przełożonych i wobec Ojca Świętego bardzo obraża Jezusa.

- Aby być zakonnicą, trzeba być bardzo czystą duszą i ciałem.

- Wiele jest niedobrych mód; nie podobają się one Jezusowi, nie są Boże.

- Spowiedź jest sakramentem miłosierdzia. Dlatego trzeba zbliżać się do konfesjonału z ufnością i radością. Bez spowiedzi nie ma zbawienia.

Dzień 14 sierpnia 2004 roku wpisał sie w historie Koła Podhalan i Miłosników Tatr pod patronatem Matki Boskiej Ludźmierskiej. Jest to pamiętna data, w tym dniu z ogromnym bólem przyjęliśmy wiadomość o nagłej śmierci 57- letniego Prezesa Klubu: Stanisława Kowalkowskiego. Wieść o jego

śmierci wycisnęła łzy wzruszenia każdemu znajomemu, a w szególności członkom klubu, których tak wielu zgromadził w tak krótkim czasie , ludzi pochodzących z Podhala oraz tych, którzy czuli pomoc działania w polskiej organizacji kościelnej z tradycjami góralskimi. Poświęcał swój wolny czas dla dobra klubu. Zaufał w całości Patronce koła Matce Boskiej Ludźmierskiej „Królowej Podhala”. I heard her perform it recently at City Winery in Chicago. Hallagan was accompanied by The Empty Pockets, a rock band that’s a headliner in its own right. If I’m square on this, the group’s co-founder Josh Solomon is Deanna’s nephew. Various other uncles/siblings/friends came to the stage over the course of that evening, too, so even though they didn’t cover any Sly & the Family Stone material, this was absolutely a family affair. “It’s a wing and a prayer, some mes/ It’s the knowledge you’re there, some mes…” Hallagan gets it. For starters, singing/songwri ng isn’t even her day job, and I know how scary it can be ge ng up in front of a crowd with just a guitar and some words you feel called to share. Googling “Rus c Falls Nature Camp” will yield details of her bi ersweet story. According to a 2011 Chicago Tribune online piece, “Eric Lentz and his wife, Deanna Hallagan, used to joke that if they ever won the lo ery, they would open a camp for troubled teens. The camp dream came true, but under far different circumstances. Within months of being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer six years ago, Lentz was wearing a chemotherapy infusion pack during the week and spending weekends in Wisconsin clearing brush…He had been given 12 to 15 months to live…”

“It’s a wing and a prayer, some mes/ It’s the knowledge you’re there, some mes…” Lentz passed away in 2014, but Hallagan, family, and friends kept the dream alive. The recent City Winery concert was actually a Rus c Falls fundraiser to con nue the camp’s good work going forward. Lentz and Hallagan should serve as inspira on for all of us, because some mes, we just have to get out of the boat, you know? That’s what he did when he got the diagnosis. That’s what she did when Eric was gone. And that’s what Peter does in today’s reading when he sees Jesus walking toward him on rough water… “It’s a wing and a prayer, some mes/ It’s the knowledge you’re there, some mes…” At Christ’s invita on “Come” (which I hear as a command) Peter leaves the boat and begins walking on the waves as well. But feeling the intensity of the wind, he becomes afraid and begins to sink, crying ‘Lord, save me!’” Which brings me back to Hallagan’s song. Per the first verse, “There’s so many mes I haven’t got a clue/ Even more when I don’t know what to do/ Somehow I find my solace right inside of you/ I believe I know that’s what gets me through.” Powerful words, especially for those of us too afraid at mes to answer Christ’s invita on/command to exit the boat. So please sing it once more, Deanna, and may your words give all of us pause as we consider our own calls to discipleship. Yeah, “It’s a wing and a prayer, some mes,” but may we all come to know, just as you have come to know, “the sun is going to rise.”

BAPTISM:

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at 773/622-5900. For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Chr istian Initi-ation Program (RCIA) on Sunday mornings at 10:00AM.
