Aaron Gentry Head Coach Aaron Gentry was named the new head baseball coach June 9, 2015. Gentry, a two-time win-ner of the American Southwest Conference Coaching Staff of the Year award, spent the last eight seasons at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. Gentry helped guide LeTour-

neau to its three most successful seasons in program history. During that three-year run, LeTourneau quali-fiedfortheASCplayoffsback-to-backseasons,andwon one ASC title. In 2014, the YellowJackets had a banner year, earning a berth in the NCAA III Region-als as well as winning an ASC Tournament champi-onship. The 2014 team also won a program-best 33 games behind one of the ASC’s most potent offenses andefficientpitchingstaffs.In2015,LeTourneauagainqualifiedfortheplayoffsandeightplayersearned All-Conference recognition. In 2013, LeTour-neauposteditsfirstwinningseasonsince1999andimproved its win total by seven from the previous season. In his last three seasons, the program went 73-48. Since Gentry’s arrival at LeTourneau in 2008, the YellowJacketshaveboastedfiveAll-Regionplay-ers, 40 All-Conference performers and 54 ASC All-Academic Team members. The 2015 team had 15 players on the ASC All-Academic Team, the most in program history. Before his stint at LeTourneau, Gentry spent three seasons as a volunteer assistant at Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma. Gentry was a standout collegiate player, leading Berry College to a TranSouth Conference championship as a senior hitting .404 with three home runs and 38 RBI. He was named conference tournament MVP that season. Gentry signed with the University of Arkansas after an impressive high school career at Claremore. After being drafted in the 12th round in 1997, Gentry played in the St. Louis Cardinals organization from 1997-2000. He was drafted three times by three differ-ent major league baseball teams. “I learned an immense amount of baseball and how to play the game right playing in the Cardinals organization,” he said. “And spending the last sever-al years with Coach Harriss at LeTourneau, I learned how to lead and how to instill mental toughness. I believe that fundamental development, along with a strong baseball knowledge, are keys to building a strong program. At Ozarks, we want to put a team out there with solid pitching and defense. If you have those things in this conference, you have a chance to win.”

Nathan Bacon Assistant Coach Nathan Bacon enters his second season as the assistant baseball coach. Bacon, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, was a standout pitch-er at NAIA Avila University from 2010-2012, where he led the Eagles to a pair of conference champion-ships.Baconfinishedhiscareerwitha 20-6 record on the mound and

earned All-Conference honors twice. He played at NAIA Central Christian College in 2009, earning the team’s Pitcher of the Year award that season. He played at NCAA II Harding University during the 2007 and 2008 season. Bacon was a pitching coach at Summit Christian Academy in Lee’s Summit, Mo., during the 2013 season. He was the pitching coach for the Diamond Kings Under 18 team in 2013 and has given pitching and hitting lessons at Searcy Sports Advantage. Bacon played at Summit Christian Academy, leading the team to a pair of state championships, while earning All-State honors three times. Bacon received his bachelor’s degree in history from Avila University in 2012. He and his wife, Jackie, were married in 2013.

Gentry also had a strong desire to remain in the NCAA Division III ranks and will emphasize its stan-dards within his program. “I like what the NCAA Division III model stands for,” hesaid.“Academicsmustcomefirst.Iwillplaceagreat amount of importance on having my kids do well in the classroom. We will look for those types of players to represent the school and program. My three-fold mission includes academics, athletics and spiritual life. And at Ozarks, I believe the personal at-tention the school provides will prepare these young men for graduation and enhance their job opportu-nities. The experience here is well-rounded.” He received his bachelor’s degree in behavioral and social science from Rogers State. He also ob-tained a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Northeastern State University. Gentry and his wife Lauren are the parents of one son, Brooks.

Gentry Expects Competitive Team In First Season New U of O baseball coach Aaron Gentry ex-pects his team to be competitive this season and is emphasizing doing the small things right. Gentry, who was an assistant coach at LeTour-neau University for eight seasons, takes over a programthatfinished10-29overalland5-23intheconference last season. “The expectation is to be competitive this sea-son,”hesaid.“Ourgoalistowin,butmoresomyfirstyear, try to instill those small disciplines to win. And, we are trying to develop a standard of how we go about winning. I want 100 percent hustle all the time. We want to be a tough ball club, and be relentless. We have the capability of being a very dynamic team.” Gentry has concentrated on four areas within his program that he believes will result in wins. “Thosefourareasincludetheclassroom, thefield, the community and the weight room,” he said. “We want to make a standard and measure our team in all those areas. If those things are good, then I be-lieve the wins will be there.” Ozarksreturnsthreestartersinthefield, andanumber of others who have starting experience. Among the team’s strengths is speed. “Our team speed is a strength,” he said. “And, I think offensively we will be able to hit one through nine.Wewillalsohavegooddepth.Ouroutfieldplaywill be among the best in the conference in terms of speed. They have the ability to make great plays. They will be able to track down balls.” Alex Smith, Zach Walker and Dean Igert saw ac-tionintheoutfieldlastseason.AndrewBeckisex-pectedtomovefromshortstoptooutfieldthissea-son.Smith,ajunior,hit.311andowneda.985fieldingpercentage in 2015. Walker, a sophomore, hit .262 with three doubles, while Igert, a senior, recorded 25 hits and scored 13 runs. Beck was an All-Region player after ranking among the American Southwest Conference’s top-10 in batting (.385), hits (57), triples (2), doubles (18), total bases (82), on-base percent-age (.424) and slugging percentage (.554). “Andrew is a solid player,” he said. “We expect a lot out of him. He is a leader on the team. He doesn’t say a lot, but he is a very consistent player both offensively and defensively. He can be among the best players in the conference. Dean had a great fall and Alex is very fast. Zach has one of the best arms in the conference.” The weekend rotation will be completely new as the Eagles lost the majority of its pitching staff, but Gentry believes there is plenty of talent.

“We are excited about the pitching staff,” he said. “We will have a lot of young guys pitching. But players like Keaton Ramsey did well all fall. He has a good demeanor on the mound. He really thinks about the game, and can execute his pitches. In the fall, Hayden Keller made strides. He is a bulldog out there. Ely Gordon is a strike thrower and has good tempo. Luke Dyer and other freshmen have done well. There are other upperclassmen like Luke Vera we expect to do well.” Ramsey tossed 19.0 innings and owned a 2-2 re-cord in 2015. Keller threw 17.0 innings and had a 1-1 record, whileVeramadefiveappearances. A number of players are battling for playing time intheinfield.“Thereiscompetitionintheinfield,”hesaid.“Weneed to be more consistent. We have worked on footwork and slowing things down. I have been im-pressed with Fielder Dufrene at short stop. He is very consistent and performed well in the fall. Transfer Justin Crider seems to be a dynamic player.” Gentry also has players pushing each other at catcher. “Zach Jones is an energetic player and brings a lot of life to the game,” said Gentry. “He has the ca-pability to be a leader. Michael Gonzalez has some good tools. He and Zach are pushing each other.” Gentry has also focused on the mental approach to the game. “I tell our guys to stay within ourselves,” said Gentry. “If you press too hard in baseball, it is not a good thing. We really stress keeping an even keel. It is a game that requires mental toughness as well as physical toughness. I expect a lot out of our guys.”

ATHLETICS

The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 13 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Belhaven Univer-sity, Concordia University Texas, East Texas Bap-tist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisi-ana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball.
