On September 6, 1638, a groupof twelve men received permission to
create a plantation on the northern bankof the Merrimack River, where its waters
intersect with the Atlantic Ocean.
For the historic, we recommend heading to the Salisbury HistoricalMuseum, Colonial Burial Ground, and the Pike One Room SchoolHouse. Our new library is state-of-the-art and is a great place to headif you need to check in online and find some place quiet. See the enclosed map for approximate locations!
In two years the community, first known as Colchester, would beincorporated as Salisbury. Simon Bradstreet received a land grantfrom the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Colonial Gov. John Winthrop, and the General Court. It included the Salisbury, Amesbury, Merrimac, and towns in southern New Hampshire.
Salisbury is made up of four distinct areas. Salisbury Beach is abeautiful sandy barrier beach stretching for five miles, with commercial and residential developments in a lush marshland setting. Ring’s Island is a traditional colonial fishing village alongthe Merrimack River, host to a neighborhood of restored homes, marinas, and restaurants. Municipal buildings, churches, residentservices, and historical residences can be found in SalisburySquare serving as the geographic center of this quaint town. Visitsome of our historic venues along with some new ones. The Salisbury Plains consists of farms and suburban homes in vastfields and rolling woodlands.
So come, explore the beach. Shop in the town square. Eat, play, celebrate, and have fun!Enjoy yourself while discovering the north coast of Massachusetts!

Birding and marine life is exciting in all seasons!Smith Snowy owls and great egrets are an elegant sight as theyfish in the marshes from spring through fall.
Our beaches are home to endangered piping plovers as they breed and raise their young from spring through summer.Migrating warblers and shorebirds are ahuge draw for birders in the spring and fall.
In the summer, that big bird with a white head flying high near the water is likely to be an Osprey. Winter brings other dramatic birds of prey such asSnowy Owls, found during the day perched in expansive, flatareas such as fields, beaches, or the marsh, and Bald Eagles, which hunt over open water on the Merrimack River.
The picturesque Salisbury Beach Reservation has many placesfor birding and seeing marine life. Aside from an array of birdswho migrate here, one can see harbor seals resting and baskingon sandbars and rocks. It offers great viewing opportunities foreagles, owls, and sea ducks in winter.
Photographers rejoice at the opportunities Salisbury has tooffer. In the fall, we are fortunate to see the migration of theMonarch butterflies as they pass through Salisbury on their wayto their southern home. During the summer, an abundance ofbutterflies visit our local gardens.
Salisbury is a great place to see all that nature has to offer. An early morning sunrise walk along the beach or a tranquilhike along the rail trails will allow you to see all the naturalbeauty that those of us who live in Salisbury get to see everyday in our own backyard.
Explore the wonders of the earth!
