Both Dayton and Marist have one conference loss this season, both to unbeaten USD. A San Diego win over Stetson would clinch no worse than a share of the PFL title for the Toreros, while also clinching a berth in the FCS playoffs. The game San Diego played last week against the UDLAP Aztecas out of Mexico City does not count in the Toreros’ season record or statistics. Even so, the Toreros’ 49-25 victory in the game was the first loss this year for the seven-time Mexican national champions. The Hatters will be looking to earn their first win over USD. In three previ- ous games against the Toreros, Stetson has been outscored by a combined 137-39. The closest game in the series came in 2014 in Torero Stadium when the Hatters dropped a 31-23 decision to USD. The only loss this season for San Diego came in week two, a 38-16 game against nationally-ranked Cal Poly on the road. The Toreros have allowed just 54 total points in six PFL wins this year. Stetson lost a homecoming game for the first time since restarting the program in 2013 with the last-minute, 45-38 loss to Marist. The Hatters spotted Marist a 24-0 lead thanks in large part to three first half turnovers that Marist converted into 17 points. The 38 points were the most Stetson has scored in a game this year and the fifth most the Hatters have scored in a game since restarting the program. Sophomore Nick Andreas was the third different player to start at QB for the Hatters this year and held his own. His 339 passing yards were the most in a game by any Stetson quarterback, breaking the mark of 328 by Ryan Tentler against Butler in 2014. The four TD passes in the game or Andreas, all to different receivers, rank as the second most in a game for the Hatters, trailing only the five for Tentler in that 2014 Butler game. The 55-yard TD pass from Andreas to Darian Wright in the second quarter was the longest pass play of the year for the Hatters and tied for the eighth longest in modern program history. Sophomore TE Donald Parham became just the third Stetson player with more than 100 yards receiving in a game with his six receptions for 109 yards SAN DIEGO TOREROS 2016 Record: 7-1 2016 PFL Record: 6-0 Head Coach: Dale Lindsey Career Record: 33-9 (4th) at USD: Same Website: USDToreros.com Twitter: @USDFootball 2016 P IONEER F OOTBALL L EAGUE School Conf. against Marist.• The 515 yards of total offense by Marist was by far the most allowed by the Stetson defense this year and was the eighth most allowed in a game by the Hatters in the modern era.• After having no turnovers in the game at Day-ton, the Hatters turned the ball over five times in the loss to Marist, three on interceptions, one on a misplayed punt and one on the final play of the game on a lateral.• Junior receiver Darian Wright took a number of snaps at quarterback against Dayton and Marist and will continue be the backup this week at the position. Wright played both QB and WR at King HS in Tampa before coming to Stetson.• The Hatters played the game at Dayton with-out the services of two-time All-American Donald Payne in addition to being without junior corner-back Dre Long. Payne suffered an injury on the opening kickoff against Campbell and, despite playing a pivotal role in Stetson’s overtime win, was not medically cleared to play against Dayton. Long also went down in the Campbell game, re-aggravating an old injury. Payne was back in the starting lineup against Marist, leading the Hatters with 12 tackles. Long also saw action in the game.• Senior linebacker Dylan Wydronkowski gave his best Jeb Boudreaux impersonation to help Stetson tie the game against Marist in the final minute. Wydronkowski scooped up a fumble by the Red Foxes and raced 60 yards before being tackled at the Marist 27, setting up the Hatters’ game-tying field goal. It was the second longest fumble return in modern program history.• The 76-yard TD pass by Marist in the final minute of play last week was the third one-play scoring possession allowed by the Hatters this year. The Hatters also allowed one-play scoring possessions at Brown and against Sacred Heart. Overall, Stetson opponents have scored 12 of their 29 offensive touchdowns this season within three plays of taking possession of the ball (41.3%).• The Hatters have had two one-play scoring possessions this year (at Brown and at Davidson) and have scored touchdowns within three plays of gaining possession on eight of offensive posses-sion that ended in a touchdown (32%).• The 98-yard scoring drive put together by Marist to start the game last week was the lon-gest allowed by the Hatters this year. Stetson has allowed just three scoring drives this year, all for touchdowns, of 85 or more yards. Stetson has just one such drive, a 96-yard effort in the season-opener against Sacred Heart.• Stetson had its seventh scoring drive this year of 10 or more plays in the game against Marist. Hatters opponents have had five scoring drives that lasted 10 or more plays this year.• Despite playing without Payne and Long, the Stetson defense more than held its own against Dayton, holding the Flyers to just 253 yards of total offense on only 50 snaps. Dayton managed to throw for just 82 yards in the game, the low-est output for the Flyers since managing just 74 against Marist in 2015. The 50 offensive snaps were the fewest for the Flyers since before the

2013 season.• The 50 plays against Stetson were the third fewest in a game against the Hatters since the program restarted. Stetson allowed just 44 plays to Warner in the 2014 season-opener and just 49 to Webber International in the 2015 season-opener.• The Stetson offense had just 11 possessions in the game against Dayton and six of those started inside the Hatters’ 20 yard line. Overall, the Hat-ters’ average starting position for drives against the Flyers was their own 21.• Two things Stetson has not yet done in almost four complete seasons is return a kickoff or a punt that wasn’t blocked for a touchdown. The Hatters had a chance to end one of those streaks against Dayton when Kegan Moore returned a Flyers’ kick-off 88 yards for an apparent score in the first quar-ter. That return, like Stetson’s only other KO return for a score, was nulified by a penalty, this time an illegal block. To add insult to injury, Moore was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play, meaning the Hatters had to start at their own 11 yard line.• The only other kickoff return for a score came in the second game of the 2013 season against Florida Tech. Terrence Burt went 100 yards with that one, but was flagged for excessive celebra-tion at the 17, nullifying the score.• Stetson has returned three blocked punts for touchdowns and, of course, one blocked field goal.• The Hatters’ block of the Campbell field goal in overtime, and subsequent return for the win-ning touchdown, was the No. 3 play of the day on SportsCenter’s Top 10 countdown. Outlets all over the country have called it the “Play of the Year” in college football and the “Best Play You May Not Have Seen”. For the Hatters, it was redemp-tion - redemption from a home loss to Valparaiso the previous week and redemption from allowing a 14-point lead to evaporate in the final minutes of the game.• In addition to blocking the Camels’ overtime field goal and scoring the winning touchdown, Donald Payne etched his name forever into the NCAA record book by recording his 500th career tackle. He is just the 14th player in NCAA history, at all levels, to reach that milestone.• With two games remaining on the schedule this fall, Payne is within striking distance of the for-mer all-time record for career tackles. That mark, 550 by Boomer Grigsby of Illinois State (2001-04), was broken earlier this year by linebacker Connor Harris of Division II Lindenwood University in Mis-souri. Harris enters play this week with 621 career tackles in 47 games, including 126 so far this year in 10 games.• After recording 12 tackles last week against Marist, Payne enters the final two games of his Stetson career with 514 career tackles. He needs to average 18 tackles over the last two games to reach 550 in his career.• The Stetson defense did a number on the Campbell ground game, which came in among the top 10 in the nation. The Hatters held the Camels to just 102 rushing yards, including minus 13 to-tal rush yards after the second possession of the

game.• For their performances against Campbell, Hat-ters seniors Davion Belk (defense) and Donald Payne (Special Teams) were named PFL Players of the Week. It was the first for Belk, but the eighth time in Payne’s career he has been honored, but the first for special teams play.• Special teams play continued to be an issue for the Hatters in the Campbell game. Not only did the Hatters get a punt blocked for the third time this year, they also had a field goal blocks and missed another. So far this season Stetson has converted on just five of 13 field goal attempts and has also missed a pair of PAT kicks, resulting in the loss of 42 points. • The Hatters are now 4-6 in games decided by a touchdown or less (7 points) since restarting the program in 2013.• The Stetson defense continues to rank among the best in all of FCS this year. Despite tying for a season-low with just six tackles for loss against Marist, the Hatters still lead the nation with 10.0 TFL per game. • Stetson’s national rankings on defense took a hit last week after allowing more than 500 yards and 45 points to Marist. The Hatters, however, still rank near the top of FCS football in red zone defense (3rd), blocked kicks (7th), pass efficiency defense (16th) and total defense (25th).• The Hatters took a streak of seven straight game in which they had lost the opening coin toss into the Campbell game. Not only did Stetson snap that streak by winning the toss against the Cam-els, but they also won the toss prior to overtime. Stetson has now won the opening toss in 23 of 43 games over four years. Overall, Stetson is 8-15 when winning the opening toss and 6-14 when los-ing the toss. • The win over Brown was especially meaningful to head coach Roger Hughes, who spent 19 sea-sons as a coach in the Ivy League at Dartmouth and Princeton. It was also a return to the Ivy League for defensive coordinator Brian Young, who coached at Cornell for two seasons.• The Hatters have won more games away from home (8) than at home (6) since the start of the 2013 season. • The Hatters wore green pants with white jer-seys for the first time in the win over Brown. In three seasons, when the Hatters have worn black or green pants on the road they are 4-2. When wearing white pants on the road, Stetson is just 4-8.• The trip to Providence turned into quite an ad-venture for the Hatters. With the rapid approach of Hurricane Matthew, the team moved up departure for to Thursday morning. As the the charter flight was rolling down the runway on takeoff, the plane had a mechanical failure that forced the takeoff to be aborted. After returning to the terminal, the airline was able to get another plane for the team, despite the fact that the airport was closed for the storm, and was able to get the team out of Florida before the worst of the storm hit.• As a result of the damage from the storm, the Hatters stayed for two nights in Orlando after re-

Page 3: 2016 S & R STETSON HATTERS SAN DIEGO TOREROS€¦ · ous games against the Toreros, Stetson has been outscored by a combined 137-39. The closest game in the series came in 2014 in

turning from Rhode Island. It was not until Mon-day afternoon that the team was able to return to campus, and they found a ghost town with no students and trees down across campus.• The Stetson defense clamped down on the Brown running game in the second half. After al-lowing the Bears to rush for 134 yards in the first half, Brown gained just 17 yards on the ground in the second half.• It wasn’t just the rush defense that came to life for Stetson in the second half. The Hatters al-lowed the two Brown quarterbacks to pass for just 70 yards after halftime on 10-of-26 pass at-tempts.• That early turnover for Stetson at Brown was the only turnover in the game for the Hatters. On the reverse side, Stetson forced the Brown of-fense to turn the ball over six times, with three fumble recoveries and three interceptions.• Prior to the game at Davidson, the Hatters had won just twice in 26 games when trailing after three quarters. In those two previous wins (Nov. 1, 2014, at Campbell and Nov. 8, 2014 vs Marist), the Hatters trailed by just six and three points entering the final quarter before pulling out wins. Against Davidson, the deficit was 21-10 going to the final quarter.• With Stetson trailing 21-10 entering the fourth quarter at Davidson, senior Kegan Moore became the Hatters’ go-to receiver. Moore had six of his career-high nine receptions in the fourth quarter, piling up 130 of his 150 yards and scoring all three Stetson touchdowns. Moore’s only other reception in the second half came early in the third quarter and, after the catch, he was striped of the ball for one of five Hatters turnovers. Moore also had three kickoff returns for 41 yards in the game for 192 all-purpose yards.• Moore’s nine receptions against Davidson were not only a career-high, but we also a Stet-son program high and his three TD catches tied his own program record, which he originally set against Butler in 2014.• For his efforts against Davidson, Moore was named the Pioneer Football League Offensive Play-

er of the Week. He was also an honorable mention for the FCS Offensive Player of the Week award.• Sophomore tight end Donald Parham also broke the previous program record for receptions in a game with eight catches against the Wildcats. The previous high for receptions in a game was seven, which had been done four times.• Not to be outdone, senior defensive back Don-ald Payne tied the school record for tackles for loss with five in the win over Davidson. He now shares that record with Davion Belk, who had five against Jacksonville in 2014. • While on the subject of milestones, Donald Payne posted the 29th single-game double-figure tackle total of his career with 12 against Marist. • The turnover bug continued to haunt the Hat-ters in the loss to Marist. Through nine games Stetson has fumbled 22 times, losing 11, to go along with 11 interceptions. The 22 total fumbles are the most Stetson has had in any of the last four sea-sons. The 22 turnovers ranks 113th of 122 teams in FCS this season. • The Hatters tied the modern program record in the win over Warner with four interceptions. Stet-son previously had four picks in a game against Jacksonville on October 18, 2014.• When junior LB Jeb Boudreaux recorded 15 tackles in the win over Warner he became the first Stetson player not named Donald Payne to have hit that number in a game. Payne has recorded 15 or more tackles in a game 12 times.• Boudreaux followed that performance with an-other 15-tackle effort in Stetson’s loss to Jackson-ville. He also had three tackles for loss and forced a fumble in that game.• Boudreaux was credited with four tackles for loss in the Warner game, which tied him with Payne for fourth most in a game for a Stetson player. Davion Belk holds the record with five TFL against Jacksonville in 2014. Payne tied that mark with five against Davidson this year.• The loss to Sacred Heart snapped a three-game win streak in season-openers and was the first season-opening loss for the Hatters since restarting the football program. Stetson is 29-21-2

all-time in season-opening games.• Mazza’s 26 career TDs accounts for 25.2 per-cent of the 103 total offensive touchdowns the Hatters have scored since the start of the 2013 season. The next closest Stetson player on the TD list is senior receiver Chris Crawford, who has eight.• The 2016 Stetson roster has 13 players remain-ing from the original 108 who reported to campus in August of 2012 to restart the football program. This group of fifth year seniors has been the nu-cleus of the program for three seasons. Overall, Stetson has 22 seniors on the 2016 roster.• Almost half of the players on the Stetson squad to open the season came from the state of Florida (50). In addition to the Sunshine State the Hatters hail from 17 other states and one US Ter-ritory. Behind Florida, Georgia (18) and California (5) are the most represented states on the roster.• The Hatters elected six team captains for the 2016 season. Five of those captains – OL Patrick Fogarty, WR Jonathan Jerozal, LB Dylan Wydronkowski, DE Davion Belk and DB Donald Payne – are among the 13 fifth year seniors. The only non-senior in the group is junior QB Colin Mc-Govern.• Senior defensive back Donald Payne was one of 22 players named to the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. Payne, the two-time defending PFL Defensive Player of the Year, returned as the eighth leading tackler in all NCAA football with 424 career tackles to start the year. He now has 502 career stops, including 317 career solo tackles.• Payne was one of three players from the PFL named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America team. The senior was also named to the Hero Sports Preseason All-America squad.• Both Payne and DE Davion Belk have been in-vited to play in Dream Bowl V. The All-Star game is scheduled to be played in Virginia Beach, Va., on January 16, 2017, corresponding with the Martin Lu-ther King Jr. national holiday.• McGovern, who earned the starting QB job in spring practice, had his season ended before it

ever started. He suffered an injury in the first prac-tice in full pads that will keep him on the sideline for the entire 2016 season.• With McGovern out of action, the Hatters opened the season with redshirt sophomore Gaven DeFilippo at the controls of the offense. A native of Tucson, Arizona, DeFilippo saw action in some JV games in 2014 but redshirted last fall. When he took the field against Sacred Heart he was the first player other than Ryan Tentler to start a game at quarterback since the Hatters re-turned to play in 2013.

Milestone watch:• With the 500 tackle mark in his pocket, Donald Payne is now just 36 stops shy of the all-time Divi-sion I record for career tackles.• NT Davion Belk’s next sack will be the 25th of his career.• WR Chris Crawford is 149 receiving yards shy of 1,000 for his career.• DB Dre Long is 64 all-purpose yards shy of 1,000 for his career.• RB Cole Mazza’s became the first Stetson play-er with more than 2,000 career all-purpose yards during the game against Marist. Mazza now has 2,020 all-purpose yards in his career.• Mazza is 177 rushing yards shy of 2,000 for his career entering the final two weeks of the season.• WR Kegan Moore surpassed 1,000 career re-ceiving yards in the opener against Sacred Heart. He is the only player of the modern era to reach that milestone. Moore is second on the all-purpose list with 1,996 career yards. He had four tackles, including one for loss, and recov-ered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown against Campbell.• WR Darian Wright missed the first five games of the 2015 season while recovering from knee surgery that ended his 2014 season. He had two receptions for 36 yards in the opener and two more receptions for 17 yards against Warner. Had four receptions for 66 yards in the win over Da-vidson. Led the team with four receptions, for 31 yards, in the win over Brown. Had three recep-tions for 49 yards against Valpo. Has stepped in to take numerous snaps at quarterback the last two weeks due to injuries. Rushed for 12 yards on five carries against Dayton while completing two of three pass attempts for six yards. Also had a 20 yard reception against the Flyers. His 55-yard TD reception against Marist was the longest pass play of the year for the Hatters.• LB Dylan Wydronkowski turned in such a great season for the Hatters last year, his first as a starter, that he decided to return for one more year, even though he has graduated. He is one of the team captains for 2016. Posted a career-high 12 tackles in the opening game of the year, including one for loss, and was named the Hatters Defensive Player of the Week. He had five tack-les, including one for loss, and two hurries in the

win over Warner. He was credited with 11 tackles against JU, including 1.5 for loss. He had six tackles, two for loss, and was credited with four QB hurries against Davidson. He had 10 tackles and one pass breakup against Brown. He had 10 more tackles, including one for loss, against Valpo. Had seven tackles, including one for loss, against Campbell. Was held to just three tackles in the game at Dayton. Scooped up a fumble against Marist and returned it 60 yards to setup the Hatters’ game-tying field goal in the fourth quarter.• FB Mike Yonker is a blue-collar guy who does a great job as a pass blocker, can run the ball when asked and is a good receiver out of the backfield. His only problem has been staying healthy enough to get on the field. He spent the summer in Austria as part of a study abroad program. He earned Of-fensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts against Warner despite only touching the ball five times. He had three rush attempts for eight yards, six coming on a TD run, and he had two receptions for 34 yards, including a 31-yard TD reception. He had three receptions for 29 yards against JU. He had one carry against Davidson, but made it count, going 38 yards for a touchdown. Shared the Big Hit award for that game with Davion Belk. Had another highly productive game against Brown with three receptions for 49 yards to go with three tackles on punt coverage to earn special teams player of the week honors. Was selected as Special Teams player of the week for his efforts against Dayton. Had four receptions for 17 yards and a touchdown against Marist.
