A GUIDE TO AN INTEGRATED HVAC SYSTEM DESIGN FOR THE 21ST CENTURY NATATORIUM Technical Session A 8:30am-9:30amPresented by: Brad Hess

This presentation will cover the basics of natatorium system design with respect to heat-ing, cooling, and moisture load. We will address typical natatorium design challenges, including: condensation, building integrity, swimmers’ health, and proper air distribution. Proper dehumidification equipment design will be discussed, as well as commissioning of these systems.

Brad Hess is the Regional Manager for the Midwest and recently joined Desert Aire this year. Desert Aire is a leading manufacturer in DX based dehumidification equipment. They specialize in indoor pool dehumidification, dedicated outside air systems (DOAS), and indoor grow room environments. Brad oversees all Independent Sales Representa-tives in the Upper Midwest. Prior to Desert Aire, Brad spent 22 years in humidity control. Brad spent 14 years at DRISTEEM Humidifier Company calling on OEM’s and as a Regional Manager. Brad has been Regional Manager for Bry-Air Inc., a manufacture of desiccants dehumidifiers. Brad has also worked for an independent HVAC Represen-tative firm in the Minneapolis market. Brad has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree of Economics from the University of Minnesota and has attended Dunwoody Institute.

LAB EXHAUSTTechnical Session A 9:45am-10:45amPresented by: Joe Thorndal

This seminar will focus on how to design energy efficient lab exhaust systems. Integration of variable geometry nozzles and energy recovery plenums will be discussed. Fan monitoring systems that allow the owner to properly schedule preventive mainte-nance based on operation - not calendar dates - will also be covered

Joe has been in the HVAC industry for more than 20 years and has been with Greenheck since October of 2013. Prior to joining Greenheck Joe was a Senior Application Engineer for Mammoth Inc., a custom manufacturer of packaged rooftop and penthouse HVAC systems. He also worked as a Senior Application Engineer for McQuay International (now Daikin) providing application support for their air handler and split system condens-ing units. Joe earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from North Dakota State University and is also a member of ASHRAE.

NEW APPROACHES TO SLASH LAB & COMMERCIAL BUILDING ENERGY USE & IMPROVE IEQ Technical Session A 11am-12pm Presented by: Peter Hmelyar

In the face of significant energy costs and concerns over global warming, buildings are receiving increasing scrutiny to reduce their carbon footprint and cut their energy expenses. For many buildings outside air is the largest single driver of both energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. Demand control ventilation has attempted to reduce energy expenses by controlling outside air but the actual results over time have been mixed at best. This presentation will discuss a more energy efficient and healthier variation on demand control ventilation that uses a new, cost effective, and more accu-rate sensing approach known as multiplexed sensing. Examples, including case studies, of how this solution has been used in office, classroom and laboratory buildings will be provided.

Peter Hmelyar is the Vice President of Channel Sales for Aircuity Inc. He joined the company in November 2000 and is responsible for all channel sales activities for the Aircuity OptiNet System in the United States and Canada. He previously was the Regional Vice President, Central Region which included (19) states and (2) Canadian Provinces. Aircuity is headquartered in Newton, MA and Peter is based in Wheaton, IL. Peter has over 35 years of sales management experience in the building and laboratory controls businesses. Mr. Hmelyar spent 10 years at Phoenix Controls in various positions of sales management including their VP of Global Sales with responsibility for all of their sales activities. During this time and before at Solidyne and Margaux Systems where he held VP of Sales, and VP of Sales and Marketing positions respectively, Mr. Hmelyar achieved great success working through independent distribution channels to provide building and laboratory controls solutions to their customers. He holds a BSME from the University of Akron.

FAN ARRAYS - TRUTH ABOUT SELECTION & SPECIFICATIONTechnical Session A 1pm-2pmPresented by: Jim Domholt

This seminar will show you how to correctly design/select a fan array based on your customer’s needs. You will see how to determine the correct number of fans, how to improve the sound profile as well as understand control considerations and VFD integration.

JJim Domholt is the Regional Manager for Energy Labs, Inc. Before ELI, he was with ClimateCraft, Inc. for seven years in Sales Management and spent 30 years at McQuay. Previously, Jim was the President of the MN Chapter of ASHRAE as well as a member of numerous AHRI committees.

UNDERFLOOR AIR DISTRIBUTION (UFAD)Technical Session A 2:15pm-3:15pm Presented by: TBDUnderfloor air distribution systems are a hybrid of displacement and mixing ventilation systems. A quick review of UFAD systems will be reviewed along with air distribution methods (ducted, pressurized & common plenums), reduction control complexity, diffus-er types. Design guidance will be provided for interior vs. perimeter zones.
