The Bush Church Aid Society has a heart for people living

in remote and regional Australia.

We are committed to going the distance to reach

Australia for Christ.

Under God, we do this by

• proclaiming Christ so that people may respond to Him;

• nurturing Christians in their faith and ministry;

• strengthening local Christian communities in their mission;

• providing services of Christian care and advocacy;

• developing an understanding of Christ’s mission and

• promoting active partnership throughout the church.

Our core commitments are

• relying on prayer for God’s help and the Holy Spirit’s guidance;

• trusting in the vision, authority and encouragement

of Scripture;

• working in humility, servanthood and fellowship with the church

in mission;

• developing interdependent relationships with Diocesan Bishops;

• providing pastoral care and professional development for staff and

• responsibly managing our resources.

The Bush Church Aid Society

We are Going the Distance by

• bringing the gospel of Christ to the outermost parts of

Australia – We are committed to sending messengers so that all

Australians, no matter where they live and work, are able to hear

the life-changing message of Christ.

• developing a new generation of culturally diverse Christian

leaders – We are committed to engaging young people,

discipling them in the faith and encouraging them in ministry so

they can lead others to Christ.

• supporting ministry by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

people – We are committed to working with our first peoples

so they can serve Christ in ways that are Biblically faithful and

culturally appropriate.

• planting and renewing sustainable churches –

We are committed to establishing vibrant and outward-looking

gatherings of Christ’s people.

• equipping local leaders for fruitful ministry – We are

committed to supporting Christians ‘on the ground’ so they can

be salt and light for Christ.

• providing care in Christ’s Name – We are committed to

serving hurting people in times of crisis and through ongoing

Christ-centred pastoral care.

One of BCA’s focus areas is planting and renewing sustainable churches. At the recent Field Staff Conference I had the privilege of facilitating a discussion with about 15 of our Field Staff, hearing from each of them about how they are seeking to do this. Their contexts were very different: Some were planting in regional centres, some in mining towns and some on remote islands or in very remote inland towns. Some were in new growth areas and others in farming communities. These church plants took many different shapes. Some were newly formed missional communities; others were new congregations alongside existing congregations, while others were renewing existing dwindling and ageing churches. There was great energy in the group as each person shared the challenges they face and opportunities they are seeking to grasp under God’s guiding hand.Here are just some of the tried and field-tested principles that emerged:• Prayer is absolutely vital for commencing any new work of God.

It places us in a listening posture so we can discern what God is doing and then join in.

• Abundant sowing of the gospel seed must take place to show where receptive hearts are.

• Jesus commands us to make disciples; He also says He will build His Church. Let’s not get those round the wrong way.

• Prioritise time with disciples who obey Jesus’ teaching, and so....create a culture of passionate missionary discipleship, and make disciples who will make disciples who will make disciples.

• The character of the members of a church planting team is the first priority.

• Help people discover the unique way God has wired them and for what unique purpose, rather than fit them into pre-existing roles.

There is great power in Christian community. Building loving relationships and creating safe spaces for people to connect with each other through meals and other social gatherings is essential.Please pray with us that God will help all those BCA Field Staff who are planting and renewing sustainable churches. Pray that God by His Spirit and Word would empower and encourage them and their teams to enact these principles, as Jesus builds his church across remote, rural and regional Australia.

National Researcher/Adviser on Indigenous Matters

The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

DecemberPray for Indigenous churches throughout Australia as they share the true story of Christmas with people in their communities. Pray that God will open the hearts and minds of many to respond positively to the meaning of Christmas.

JanuaryAsk God to give wisdom and strength to Indigenous clergy as they serve their communities as pastors, peacemakers and comforters in many difficult situations that people have to deal with regularly. May people see Jesus in the way they live and minister to others.

FebruaryPray for the staff at Nungalinya College as they commence a new year of teaching students. Pray that the students who come from many different places will learn well and grow as disciples of Jesus.

ProfileThe honorary role of National Researcher/Adviser on Indigenous Matters provides assistance in research and issues relating to ministry by BCA with Indigenous people. Ministry is widely varied. BCA has Indigenous staff and those who walk alongside Indigenous people in various capacities. With a long history of working beside Indigenous people, BCA desires continued partnership with them. Pray for wisdom as future ministry is planned.

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers. Psalm 1:1

DecemberGive thanks to God for His unfailing love for us. Pray that we will not walk in the way of the wicked. Pray that our Nation will see the Way, the Truth and the Life that can only be found in Jesus Christ. May God bless all who gather to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, especially in remote places.

JanuaryGive thanks to God for the rest we enjoy in Him. Pray that we will focus on knowing Him and His peace. Help us to love even our mockers and those who walk away from God. May God bless our efforts through BCA to call them back so that they may live.

FebruaryGive thanks to God that He reigns forever. Pray that our governments will rule with justice and mercy and do so humbly before God. May we not be ashamed to speak the truth and call people throughout Australia to know the forgiveness and peace of Jesus.

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.” Luke 10:2

DecemberPraise God with us that we are able to celebrate publicly the birth of Christ this month. Pray that we work well with all of the Christians in town as we run community carols, a Christmas Eve party and Christmas Day services. Pray that the gospel is proclaimed helpfully at each of these events.

JanuaryThings are very hot and very quiet at this time of year. Please pray that we make the most of the quiet time to be hospitable to both Christians and non-Christians in town. Please pray for our locum as we spend a couple of weeks out of town.

FebruaryPray for our church AGM this month. Pray that people are willing to work alongside us for the cause of the gospel. Pray that we put good plans in place to reach out to our town and bring people to Jesus. Pray also that we make good relationships with new people in town this month.

ProfileExmouth is located 1250km north of Perth. Famous for the Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park, thousands of visitors flock to Exmouth every year boosting the town’s regular population of approximately 2500 people. Locals are involved in industries such as tourism, fishing and maintenance of the nearby naval base and support services that go along with all these things. Exmouth Anglican Community Church seeks to proclaim Jesus in this context.

The time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger. Luke 2:6–7

DecemberThis is often a quieter month in town as many locals head south to be with family. Pray that Christians who remain will take up the opportunities for fellowship and outreach to neighbours.

JanuaryPray for the Wardens and Parish Councillors as they make plans for the year ahead and for the Diocese and BCA as they work with them towards a new permanent appointment.

February At the time of writing it was expected that Kees and Cindy Bootsma would be in place for a second period of locum ministry. Thank God for their willingness to serve in this way.

ProfileKununurra is a magnificent part of God’s creation with many beautiful sites to visit and things to see. It is surrounded by irrigated farm land with an abundance of fresh water. Farming is a fast growing industry in our region along with tourism and mining. St James Kununurra meets at 9:30am (all year round) and at 5pm for Café Church (June to September).

A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way? Proverbs 20:24

DecemberPraise God that we could have a week away at the BCA Field Staff Conference on the Sunshine Coast. We were encouraged by the Bible talks and fellowship with other Field Staff. Pray for good preparations for Christmas in Kununurra and that the combined Christmas carols would be a blessing to our town.

JanuaryAs a family we have had a very strenuous year; please pray for a safe/relaxing holiday and that we are refreshed to serve God in 2017.

FebruaryPray we know how we can best school our children and bring them up to love and trust Jesus all of their lives.

ProfileThe population in Kununurra/Wyndham is currently about 7000 people, about half who are North Australian Indigenous people. Some call themselves ‘stolen generation people’. Lots of these senior people have had a close connection with the Church through mission life. The Watson family have been in Kununurra since 2004 and minister with them.

Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll – are they not in your record? Psalm 56:8

DecemberLast night was the Newman carols night. We pray that God was glorified! Please pray that loneliness and search for material wealth will not overshadow the power of the story of Jesus on His rescue mission for us. Pray for safe travels for the congregation as they leave for holidays.

JanuaryIt’s hot! We thank God for the majesty that He shows us through the weather here in Newman. As a new year begins, pray for an anticipation of all that God is able to do through and with His faithful people here. May many newcomers be welcomed and transformed into disciples this year.

FebruaryPray for the Aboriginal people here in Newman who often suffer greatly in the heat. Pray for the residents here to see their plight and offer kindness and a drink of water when needed. As the school term commences, pray that the children’s Bible studies will resume with enthusiasm.

ProfileIn this our sixth year in the Jewel of the Pilbara, we still never cease to be amazed at the faithfulness of God and the richness of His love for His people here. We are ever mindful of the power of prayer from all of you, who keep us before the Master’s throne of grace. We praise God for the opportunity to preach Christ crucified.

Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

DecemberPray for a Christ-focused carols night and for many opportunities to graciously and fearlessly share the glorious gospel message over the Christmas period. Pray for us as we farewell people from our church family and celebrate the joy of Christmas.

JanuaryGive thanks for the opportunity we have for holidays. Pray that we will be refreshed and encouraged by our time away and for safety on the road as we drive to Perth and back. Pray for Philip to be given godly wisdom as he plans for the year ahead.

FebruaryPray for the church to connect with new people arriving in town. Pray also for God to send Christians with a heart to serve in the church and be involved in mission. Pray for Lilly (Year 6) and Annabella (Year 10) as they start a new school year and make new friends.

ProfileWe celebrate 11 years of ministry in Port Hedland in January 2017. We are so thankful to God for the way in which He has sustained and blessed us during this time. Port Hedland is currently going through some challenging times with the economic downturn. Against this backdrop of uncertainty, the gospel of God shines ever so brighter. We give thanks for BCA supporting us to proclaim the gospel and see people’s lives transformed by it.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

DecemberPraise God for His rescue mission, for sending Jesus as the once for all sacrifice for our sins so that we could be forgiven and made clean and become children of God. Pray that we will faithfully proclaim that truth through Christmas opportunities.

JanuaryPraise God for another new year to serve Him throughout the Pilbara of Western Australia. Following the loss of many faithful members in 2016, pray that God would raise up committed Christians to stand with us as we proclaim the gospel of Jesus and that people would respond with repentance and faith.

FebruaryThank God for His sustaining grace through these hot difficult months. Pray that we will have renewed energies and enthusiasm as we continue in ministry and that many will receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.

ProfileKarratha is the residential, educational and service centre for the West Pilbara region. Dampier is a major port for the export of iron ore, salt, and natural gas. The Dampier Seafarers Centre services thousands of visiting seafarers every year. Long work hours, high pay, ‘extreme’ materialism and secularism are constant barriers that only the gospel of Jesus can overcome.

DecemberGive thanks for the chance to celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus with the wider community. Pray for the community carols services in Mingenew (10 December) and Dongara (11 December) and for our other Christmas services. Pray for a refreshing break for us.

JanuaryPray for a year full of opportunities to grow Christ’s church in number and maturity. As we set plans for our church this year, ask for wisdom, creativity and energy to set good goals and work to bring them to fruition.

FebruaryPray that our Bible fellowship groups will serve to encourage and grow many in our church. Give thanks for Dongara District High School and pray for Daphne as she starts school full-time this year. Pray that the school finds a great Chaplain to serve the community with Christ’s love.

ProfileDavid has been the Senior Minister for Dongara-Mingenew since October 2015. About 3.5 hours drive north of Perth, Dongara, with a population of around 3500, is home to a variety of people from retirees to crayfishers, miners to farmers and is visited by many tourists. DecemberPlease give thanks for Matt and Naomi Warth who have been leading the church while we have taken time out to refresh. Pray for our Sunday meetings as we settle in to our new venue. Please also pray for Carols at the Picture Gardens on Sunday 11 December and our main service on Christmas Eve.

JanuaryThank you for another year of support in prayer and giving in the gospel. We continually give thanks for you and ask that you continue to support ministry so that those in the bush across our Nation will know the love of Jesus. Pray too, for the Lord’s financial provision for our ministry in 2017.

I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. For He is the living God and He endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end. Daniel 6:26

DecemberThere are a number of nearby towns and Aboriginal communities not currently receiving regular gospel ministry. Please pray that gospel ministry would increase in Onslow, Pannawonica, Wakathuni, Bellary Springs, and other similar places.

JanuaryWe anticipate that Priya will be in Sydney for about four months from January (and Dave for some of that time). Please pray for us as a family, and for provision of ongoing ministry in our absence.

FebruaryPlease pray for more opportunities to share the gospel in the South Pilbara with children, adults, people in Aboriginal communities, mining camps and on cattle stations. There are so many who need to hear, please ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers.

ProfileLife goes on following the downturn in iron ore price which has greatly reduced the population and workforce of our towns. Gospel ministry also goes on. We are thankful for the believers and non-believers we have the privilege to live alongside. Please especially pray for our evangelism, and the evangelism of all God’s people here; that many more would be gathered to the good shepherd who came to bring life to the full.

DecemberPray we will use the Christmas season well for hospitality and outreach. We look forward to a visit from our daughter for 10 days from 19 December when we will meet her in Uluru and bring her here. We are holding a Christmas service in the afternoon at the copper and gold mine with 150 family members of miners who are being flown in. This is our first time doing this.

JanuaryPray for refreshment and making connections with those left in Coober Pedy in the hot summer holidays when our normal activities and everybody else’s are less. We will attend CMS Summer Encounter in Adelaide from 19–21 January and Brian and Judy from our church will be visiting India for four weeks. May they gather good information for us.

FebruaryThere are so many opportunities here. Pray that we will focus on our priorities where possible and not be swamped. Pray for kids ministry to begin well. THE BCA PRAYERLord our God, help us to remember those who live in isolated and remote parts of our land. We ask you to strengthen and encourage all whose ministries are supported by The Bush Church Aid Society. Refresh them in times of discouragement and loneliness and call others to stand with them in the task of making Christ known. Grant that, through the ministry of the Word and Sacraments, through caring service and by support for young people, the message of your redeeming love may be proclaimed and accepted by the people of our land.

We ask these things through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DecemberPray for more labourers for our church (Matthew 9:35–38). December marks the end of our (ecumenical) youth pastor’s time on Norfolk Island. The Minister’s Fraternal is still looking for a part-time youth and children’s pastor for 2017. Pray that the person who answers the call will be holy, passionate and evangelistic.

JanuaryJanuary is the month Norfolk Island relaxes. Even though most folks live within minutes of the beach, in January they camp there for weeks at a time! This will be our first full January on the Island (last year we were on annual leave in Sydney) and our prayer is that this will be a great time to make connections and build relationships.

FebruaryPray for the youth and children in our church. Pray that our church will give them such grounding in the gospel they will always think about Christian faithfulness when confronted with the world’s options. Ask God to give our children’s and youth leaders a caring heart, a teaching ability, and a prayerful spirit. Pray for new families to join us, as others leave for the mainland.

ProfileLife is slower and quieter in the Ridge over summer. Many people go away to escape the heat, and there are few tourists, who are so important to the town’s economy in the cooler months. Summer is even harder for those living in ‘camps’, without electricity. While underground is cooler, there is actually too much moisture to live there long-term (unlike Coober Pedy).
