Greetings from the breezy, sunny, warm and dry Front Range of the Rockies! At least that’s what February is proving to be . . . So, since calving is easy, we have a supremely cheerful little message for you! How do we Plan For Success in 2016?!? Success never just happens for those of us in the real world. But it can be achieved with some thoughtful decision making and a determined approach. What are the facts of the beef business right now? An irrational, unpredictable market is making hardened traders and cattle buyers cry themselves to sleep. But, we ranchers are still getting paid by the pound. Live pounds at birth, live pounds at weaning. Do we have a great deal of control over that? Abso-lutely! Vigorous, sturdy calves are money to the ranch. Early growth and efficiency are money to the ranch. Heavy weaning weight achieved by muscle, which is heavier and easier to produce than fat, is money to the ranch. Cows with above average production years are money to the ranch. . . . See! We’re getting more and more successful by the minute.

Open Gate Ranch has always lived and breathed by these simple facts. We don’t have any skill or patience for complicated, trendy approaches. We make our decisions based on what actually works. We try to avoid big mistakes by using all of the paper tools and EPDs in real time, trans-lated to a real ranch. But even if there was no Bull Sale for us next year these cattle would be absolutely as profitable, sustainable and enjoyable as we possibly know how to make them.

We’ve been called out and criticized for many things over the years: “There’s too much Simmental in your sale.”“There’s not enough Simmental in your sale.”“These bulls are just glorified Angus.”

But we try to base our decisions on facts. We have been producing SimAngus bulls for 30 years. A crossbred bull just does his job phenome-nally better than any other. FACT. So for the commercial cattleman, there is seldom reason to use anything else. The flexibility and fine-tuning and consistency that are possible with a thoughtful crossbreeding program cannot be matched any other way. The availability of excellent crossbred bulls will continue to be staggering because: they are awesome! And so much fun to raise . . . We understand the benefits of the Angus breed as well as anyone. An average Angus bull will do everything he is supposed to, and very efficiently. But when Open Gate uses an Angus sire, we choose only the very elite A.I. bulls who crush the averages and bring incredible expression of the breed’s best qualities. So why keep on driving the ’67 Plymouth station wagon with wood panelling and a slant six when you could be in a ’67 Camaro that is hopped up, tricked out, and rips it up? Why not buy the bull that makes your heart skip a beat when you see him in profile on a hillside in mid winter just blowing everyone’s doors off?

You may have discerned that we bleed Simmental. These cows have been the steady, comforting heartbeat that sustains us reliably in any market year, in any weather, with any feed quality. We just plug in the variables and either amp them up, or soften them with the qualities of top shelf Angus.

So, all that’s left, is to share them with you!!!

Some interesting patterns revealed themselves in the data this year: you may notice that the offering has tightened up considerably with fewer extremes on either end. We are finding our rhythm as Mike and all five siblings work out how to harness our preferences into a seamless pro-gram. One dramatic link is how consistently a high Weaning Weight EPD is connected to high WDA (weight per day of age). We love it when raw data confirms an EPD in our own environment and these two numbers are a great indicator of excellent, early growth and money to the ranch. The bulls semen tested extremely well and they are very active and fit, utilizing the big southern exposed hill in the development pasture. Finally, we can-not emphasize enough the need to pay attention to MCE (maternal calving ease) on bulls you intend to keep replacement heifers out of. There are more ways to address calving ease than just buying lower birthweight bulls.

SEMEN INTERESTOpen Gate Ranch reserves the right to collect semen for our personal use on any of the bulls offered in the sale. This will be done outside the breeding season at our expense.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEEDOpen Gate Ranch offers a complete satisfaction and soundness guaran-tee up to the second breeding season on every bull purchased at our sale. This includes bull replacement or full credit minus salvage against a new one.

Any individual purchasing 3 or more bulls will receive a 5% volume discount off the purchase price.

There is $100 discount per bull for hauling your own on sale day.

ABOUT THE BULLSThe bulls are available for viewing at the ranch prior to the sale. For directions, see page 15.

EPDs on both sale bulls and Reference Sires are printed as calculated by American Simmental Association and follow the Simmental definition for each trait.

Ultrasound scan data was taken on January 18 by Sonya Gregory and interpreted at a Central Ultrasound Processing Lab. It is an actual calcula-tion of each bull’s carcass information that has been adjusted to a 365 day measurement, which will facilitate accurate comparison between bulls. American Simmental Association provided updated Carcass EPDs based on the scan data. IMF is marbling as a percent of mass, BF is back fat in percent of inch, and REA is rib eye in square inches.

Scrotal evaluation and fertility testing was done by Dr. Cale Bjornstad on February 9.

Every bull has been ear notched and tested for BVD Persistent Infection and the bulls have had all standard immunizations including vaccination against foot rot. We want you to buy with no concerns about viral issues.

Why We Still Believe in UltrasoundOur ultrasound technician, Sonya Gregory has been scanning our bulls longer than any of us could put a date on. We always look for-ward to hearing her perspective on the seedstock business and what she has observed as she travels.

This year, she talked about the trend to abandon traditional carcass measurements in favor of Genomic Enhanced EPDs because the indus-try is placing so much confidence in the accuracy of these very specif-ic genetic markers. Many herds are beginning to use this technology heavily. Here is one definition of the phenomenon: “Genomic

results are a way to enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals, and to characterize genetics for traits where it is difficult to measure the animal’s own perfor-mance for the trait, such as carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls.”

Exciting stuff!

As these tools become more and more commonly used, we have decided to continue to employ ultrasound as a “checks and balances” in our program. If cattle breeding decisions are primarily weighted by genetic markers, and those breeding decisions get compounded and compounded with each generation, we want to be certain the trait is actually manifesting itself: that the genetic markers have triggered and are doing what they promise. We also want to be able to see how our contemporary groups are changing year to year, in response to breeding, to management, and to weather.
