Dr Barth A Green (United States of America)

Eccles LecturerProfessor Jeffrey V. Rosenfeld AM OBE (Australia)

Dr Green is Professor and Chairman of the Department of the Neurological Surgery and Professor of Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation and Neurology at the University of Miami Medical School. He served 37 years in the US Army Reserve Medical Corps where he reached the rank of Lt. Colonel. Dr Green is a world-renowned specialist in the surgical management of complex spine and spinal cord injuries and disorders and a co-founder of “The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis”. Dr Green also co-founded Project Medishare for Haiti in 1994 and has helped to organise and coordinate major medical relief efforts following such natural disasters as Hurricane Katrina (2005) and the Haiti earthquake (2010).

Professor Peter Hutchinson (United Kingdom)Professor Hutchinson is a Professor of Neurosurgery, NIHR Research Professor and Head of the Division of Academic Neuro-surgery within the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Cambridge. He holds an Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon post at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. He is also Director of Clinical Studies at Robinson Col-lege, Cambridge. He has a general neurosur-gical practice with a sub-specialist interest in the management of neuro-trauma, specifi-cally head and traumatic brain injury. He has a research interest in acute brain injury, utilising multi-modality monitoring technol-ogy to increase the understanding of the pathophysiology of brain injury.

Professor Ying Mao (China)Professor Mao is a Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, Hua Shan Hospital, Fudan University, Vice President of Hua Shan Hospital and recipient of the Chinese Government “Chang Jiang Scholarship”. His major interests include the clinical practice and research of cerebrovascular diseases, especially the surgical treatment of complicated cerebral aneurysms, AVM, cavernomas and moyamoya disease. Currently he is focused on the treatment of glioma and has had fruitful results.

Professor Jean Regis (France)Professor Regis is a Professor of Neurosur-gery and Head of the Stereotactic, Functional Neurosurgery and Radiosurgery Depart-ment at Aix Marseille University. Professor Regis completed his neurosurgery residency before performing military service in general neurosurgery and fellowship training in functional neurosurgery. Profes-sor Regis has published 360 peer reviewed papers and is the former President of the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society.

Professor Jeffrey V. Rosenfeld is Foundation Director, Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME); Senior neurosurgeon, Alfred Hospital; Adjunct Professor in Surgery at the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Bethesda, MD, USA and Honorary Professor in Neurosurgery, Univer-sity of Papua New Guinea (PNG). His current research interests are traumatic brain injury and bionic vision. Professor Rosenfeld was awarded the Syme Professorship and the King James IV Professorship of Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. He has been an invited Visiting Professor in 11 countries and an invited speaker for 15 named orations and 65 international meetings. He has published over 250 peer reviewed articles (including Lancet, Lancet Neurology and NEJM), 40 book chapters and 2 books. He is a Principal Investigator with the Monash Bionic Vision Group.

Mr Rob Kuru(Australia)Mr Rob Kuru is a Newcastle based spinal surgeon with an interest in adult and paedi-atric deformity correction. He developed an interest for spinal deformity correction whilst at Shriners Hospital for Children as a registrar in 1996 and subsequently returned to the United States for further post-fellowship training in 1998. He returned to Newcastle in 1999 to establish practice and currently holds clinical appointments at John Hunter, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle Private Hospi-tals.

Dr Andrew Bleasel(Australia)Dr Bleasel is a Neurologist at Westmead Hospital. He became interested in epilepsy while training in Neurology and went on to a Clinical Fellowship in Epilepsy at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He came to Westmead Hospital in 1996 where he is the Director of the Epilepsy Unit. In 2010 he be-came Head of the Department of Neurology. He has co-directed the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists annual EEG teaching course and was President of the Epilepsy Society of Australia 2010-2012. He is currently Secretary of the Commission of Asian and Oceanian Affairs for the Interna-tional League Against Epilepsy. He teaches throughout South East Asia and Australia.

Dr Charles Brooker(Australia)Dr Charles Brooker is an anaethetist and has been practicing pain medicine for 13 years. He is involved in all aspects of acute and chronic pain medicine and related clinical research. He is currently Head of Depart-ment of Pain Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Dr Michael Buckland(Australia)Clinical Associate Professor Buckland is a Senior Staff Specialist Neuropathologist and Head of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) Department of Neuropathology. He provides sub-specialist neuropathology di-agnostic expertise to RPAH and the broader New South Wales (NSW) medical community. His clinical duties include histopathological diagnosis of RPAH brain biopsies and brain tumour resections, a busy “second opinion” service for difficult cases, as well as oversee-ing the molecular neuropathology laboratory which performs molecular characterisation of gliomas for many patients across NSW. His current research activities are centered on molecular heterogeneity in low grade gliomas and the role of extracellular vesicles in glioma progression and recurrence.

Professor Georgina Long(Australia)Georgina Long is Professor of Melanoma Medical Oncology and Translational Research and Medical Oncologist at Melanoma Institute Australia, University of Sydney. She leads an extensive clinical trials team and laboratory, with a focus on targeted thera-pies and immuno-oncology, and has been the principal investigator on trials using anti-PD1 compounds as immunotherapy treat-ment or in combination with other agents. She is chief investigator on NHMRC funded research into the molecular biology of mela-noma, with a particular interest in clinical and tissue biomarker correlates of system-atic therapy sensitivity and resistance. In recognition of her ground-breaking research, Associate Professor Long was awarded the Outstanding Cancer Research Fellow 2013 at the CINSW Premier’s Awards.

Dr Rhea Liang(Australia)Dr Liang is a general and breast surgeon and Director, Breast Services at Gold Coast HHS. Her educational interest stems from a BA ma-joring in Education Theory. She is a Surgical Teachers Course convenor and CCrISP course director. Current research projects include ongoing multicentre breast cancer research and a thesis project about women in surgical training torwards a Master of Surgical Educa-tion. She is the current recipient of the Ian and Ruth Gough Surgical Education Scholar-ship and the inaugural recipient of the John Collins Educational Research Development Prize in 2015. She is the Surgical Education section convenor for the 2016 RACS ASC in Brisbane.

Dr Mark Mackay(Australia)Dr Mackay is a Paediatric Neurologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Melbourne. He is Director of the RCH Stroke Program, Head of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute Childhood Stroke Research Group, Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Child Neurology Society Paediatric Stroke Special Interest Group and an executive com-mittee member of the International Pediatric Stroke Study Group. He has recently com-pleted a PhD focusing on timely and accurate recognition of childhood stroke in prehos-pital and emergency department settings. Current international research collaborations focus predominantly on ischaemic stroke.

Dr Brendan Steinfort(Australia)Dr Steinfort is an interventional neuroradi-ologist (INR). He was the inaugural INR fellow at Royal North Shore Hospital and completed a further fellowship at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queens Square, London. Dr Steinfort is a pioneer in novel neurovascular techniques. He was the first doctor in Australia to perform mechanical stent thrombectomy for acute large vessel occlusion stroke, and we believe the second doctor in the world. His works are frequently published in peer reviewed journals. Dr Steinfort regularly lectures on advanced aspects of INR nationally and inter-nationally. Doctors Steinfort and Faulder are the only full time INR clinicians in New South Wales and founded Specialist Endovascular Services in 2009 dedicated to providing INR care in private practice.

Dr David Stewart(Australia)Dr David Stewart graduated medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 2001, com-pleting his basic surgical training in the UK. He moved to Sydney in 2005 for a research fellowship in plastic surgery at Prince of Wales Hospital and then completed his FRACS in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He underwent fellowship specialty training in hand and microsurgery at Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne and worked there as a consultant prior to returning to Sydney where he is a VMO at Royal North Shore Hos-pital and a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney. Specialist interests include periph-eral nerve surgery, particularly traumatic brachial plexus injuries, and microsurgical soft tissue and limb reconstruction.

Dr Peter McCombe(Australia)Dr McCombe is a full time orthopaedic spine surgeon in Brisbane. He is the senior visiting consultant in spine sur-gery at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and has practiced exclusively in adult spine surgery for the last 25 years. He has a special interest in sagittal imbalance and the theoretical mathematical analysis of spinal balance and disc arthroplasty. His practice specialises in cases of deform-ity causing nerve compression such as spondylolisthesis and degenerative adult scoliosis and in the correction of sagittal imbalance in the degenerative spine or in iatrogenic acquired deformi-ties. He has an interest in, and experi-ence with spinal implant design.

Dr Andrew Nunn(Australia)Dr Andrew Nunn is a Spinal Physi-cian, Director of the Victorian Spinal Cord Service (VSCS), who is involved in comprehensive care from accident with acute management, rehabilitation, community integration and long-term follow-up. He has a 25 year association with Monash and Melbourne Universi-ties (as well as Latrobe and Swinburne) in engineering and medicine. Ongoing funded clinical research within the VSCS includes telehealth, the application of emerging and merging technology, remote ambulatory monitoring using multiparameter data loggers, new approaches to bladder management, nerve transplantation, integration of data sets and neurodiagnostics.

1. Abstracts should not exceed 275 words (excluding the title, author(s) and presenter’s name). Any references must be included in this allowance. If you exceed this limit, the excess text will NOT appear in the final program.

2. Include author(s) and indicate presenting author.3. Include details of main institution.4. Research papers should follow the format: Purpose, Methodology, Results and Conclusion.5. Tables, diagrams, graphs and the like cannot be accepted in the abstract.6. Conflicts of interest must be declared at the time of the abstract submission.7.
