April 2016: New York International Auto Show Review

Luxury Debuts Mark a Great EconomyIts strange how it looks like Green Cars are thehighlight of this year’s New York auto showwhen gasoline is averaging under $2 across theUnited States. General Motors highlightedupdates to their smallest Buick and the littlestAmerican-made Chevrolet, Porsche launched afour-cylinder Macan crossover, Toyota launcheda 50-state plug-in hybrid, Acura introduced ahybrid version of the MDX, and even the firstGenesis brand concept sported a hybriddrivetrain.

The biggest splashes, however, were from theless eco-friendly side of the industry. Mercedes-Benz showed a sportier version of its compactGLC crossover with 367hp along with two high-performance AMG versions of other models.Kia took the show to introduce the secondgeneration of its Cadenza full-sized sedan.Nissan’s supercar, the GT-R, added new stylingand even more power. Porsche went old-schoolwith its racing edition 911 R with less weight, areal 6-speed manual transaxle and a largernon-turbo six-cylinder pumping out 500hp. But,arguably, the stars of the show were twoconcepts for two different luxury marques.

Rumored for nearly a decade, Hyundai rolledout is Genesis brand earlier this year withrevamped versions of the top two Hyundaimodels. As part of a future six-model lineup, itwas a certainty that announcements were ontheir way. The first came in the form of the “NewYork Concept,” which promises to point the wayfor the new Genesis design theme and hint atthe upcoming “entry-level” Genesis G70 sedan. The beauty of the “New York Concept” cannotbe properly demonstrated in photographs sincethere are just too many details that need to beseen as a whole. Obvious winner.

As part of Lincoln’s reintroduction to the world,Matthew McConnaughey swaggered onto thestage and unveiled the Navigator Concept. Thisis the second straight introduction where anactual name was used instead of the “MK”series that flushed Zephyr and Town Car fromthe lexicon. As a large SUV concept, theNavigator shows the clean lines from theContinental and the vast interior space offeredin the Navigator production model. Even thoughits lavish and huge gull-wing doors won’t makeproduction, another obvious winner.

World Car of the Year

announcement saw the Mazda MX-5

overcome its runner-up status (North

American and European COTY) to take the

Daimler

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe•Starting with the new GLC crossover, Mercedes-Benz created a sportier “coupe” body style to take on the BMW X4

•Enhancing its sportier style, the GLC Coupe drops the frames from the standard GLC’s windows, removes the wagon-like roofline in favor of a hatch-like silhouette, and lowers the top for a sleeker, faster look

•Nearly three inches longer, an inch and a half lower, and more than 4 ¼

inches wider than the standard GLC, the Coupe has a more aggressive

demeanor and style

•Under the hood lies a twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 367hp and

pushing it all through Mercedes-Benz’ 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic

transmission powering all four 21-inch wheels

Ford

2016 Lincoln Navigator concept•Just about as wild as modern American concepts get, the Navigator concept provides a look at the new Lincoln styling theme stretched across the large SUV canvas

•The new Continental’s front clip has been enlarged to Navigator size and still retains the modern look of the large sedan

•Instead of the four doors on the standard-length Navigator, the concept

fills the sides with two large gull-wing doors hinged near the central line of

the truck; production version will obviously trade them for swinging doors

•The next generation of 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 engine is said to

produce over 400hp in this vehicle

Fuji Heavy

2017 Subaru Impreza•Subaru’s fifth generation Impreza showcases a mild update on an all-new platform

•Continuing as a four-door sedan and a “5-door” hatchback or small wagon, the new model adds production lines in the US to accommodate assembly of Canadian and US vehicles

•Subaru’s new platform will be the basis for all next-generation models from the brand•Marginally larger, the sedan continues the look of earlier generations

while the 5-door gains a little more crossover-like styling with its larger tail

section but still keeping the family resemblance to the earlier model

•Starting with the restyled body of the new Camaro, the ZL1 tops the lineup with a unique powertrain and the debut of a new transmission

•The Corvette’s supercharged V8 pushes 640hp in this application

•A joint development between Ford and General Motors, the ZL1 is GM’s

first use of the new 10-speed automatic transmission, which will eventually

find its way into a number of rear-wheel drive models

•Pricing for the coupe is expected to be in the US$60,000 range, a

convertible version will also be offered

Hyundai

2016 Genesis New York concept•First look at the new styling direction for the Genesis brand as well as a glimpse of the new mid-sized G70 model

•Styling details on the concept, including bronze accents and “gills” on the fenders and grille that move to the inside, cover the car completely while not looking busy or overwrought

•Modern interior sports a 21-inch LG-supplied curved 4K screen that

covers much of the instrument panel’s center which allows for gesture

control of various features

•The hybrid drivetrain combines a 2.0L direct-injected gasoline four-

2017 Kia Cadenza•Kia’s second generation full-sized front-drive sedan, the Cadenza continues to take aim at entry-premium models such as Toyota’s Avalon

•Because it was introduced late in its global life-cycle, the Cadenza is being updated only two years after its North American introduction

•Two different trim levels can be differentiated by their grille designs; base

models feature the “Diamond Butterfly” styling that ties it with the rest of

the Kia lineup while the upper models get a unique “Intaglio” grille with its

vertical slats

and a new eight-speed transaxle

•Mechanically, the RF is identical to the standard roadster edition with its

2.0L SKY-ACTIV-G four-cylinder for North American customers while a

1.5L version will be offered to various global markets

•Inside, the GT-R gets simpler audio system controls and a larger touch

panel

•Hand-built in Japan, the GT-R’s 3.8L DOHC twin-turbo V6 improves from

545hp to 565hp while adding 4 lb-ft of torque; even the 6-speed dual-
