MIDWAY COMMUNITY COUNCILSFor more than 40 years, a hallmark of St. Paul’s diverse neighborhoods have been the District Planning Councils. These neighborhood organizations are an important part of the Midway and are increasingly linking residents and businesses. Each Council is run by an elected Board of Directors, often including business representatives.

PARKS & RECREATIONMinnesotans take particular pride in their parks. Saint Paul has numerous locations for recreation, open to all.

Welcome to the Midway!

For much of the history of the Midway, University Avenue had a professional sports team, and a streetcar line down the middle of the road that could take passengers to games, work, home and many other places. We have recently seen light rail open in 2014 where the old street cars rode, and in 2018 our neighborhood will once again be home to a professional sports team- instead of baseball, this time it will be Major League Soccer. Needless to say, there is a lot of excitement in the Midway as the Chamber gets another year closer to celebrating 100 years, which will occur in 2019. We hope this year you will remember some of your favorite memories of the Midway, while also discovering new places and meeting new friends.

TransportationThe Midway neighborhood is conveniently located in between downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul, as well as near the University of Minnesota. It is also easy to travel to all three thanks in part to the Metro Transit Green Line, a light rail line which opened in 2014 and travels from the Union Depot in Lowertown (Saint Paul) to Target Field in downtown Minneapolis. To find out more to do along University, go to www.onthegreenline.com to learn more about the different neighborhoods along the Green Line.

Beginning in June 2016, Metro Transit will open up the first Bus Rapid Transit line in the Twin Cities, which will service the Midway. The A-Line BRT will travel south along Snelling Avenue, from Rosedale Shopping Center to Ford Parkway, where it will travel west into Minneapolis, connecting with the Blue Line

at Hiawatha Avenue and 46th Street. With its stop at University Avenue, the A-Line will connect the Blue Line and Green Line.

Food and DrinkUniversity Avenue has become known as one of the most diverse places to go for unique cuisine in the Twin Cities. Several different ethnic pallets come alive on or near University Ave., including many Asian and African dining options, as well as the convenience of many fast food restaurants. Midway also has a reputation for live music, especially local bands (most notably at the Turf Club, a staple for live music for decades). Recently, the Midway has also adopted the trend of craft brewing, with breweries such as Lake Monster Brewing opening over the past few years.

Welcome to the Midway!

IndustryTo know the Midway neighborhood, it is important to understand the important role the industrial sector has played in the area. Most notably closer to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul border you can find leaders in the industrial community such as Rihm Kenworth, a trucking company, and WestRock, formerly RockTenn, a packaging company. Railways also factor into the history of the Midway, in our past and today.

ShoppingThrough the years, the Midway has always been a place to go for buying goods and services. Once considered the best place to find a new or used car, many

previous dealerships have undergone redevelopment and found new uses. While you can still buy a car on University, you can also buy men’s clothing at Milbern’s, fine chocolate on Transfer Road from Chocolat Celeste, groceries at many stores including the Hampden Park Co-Op on Raymond, and several second-hand items at Pawn America.

Nonprofit CommunityThe Midway is proud of the large number of nonprofit organizations which call our neighborhood home. Over 60 nonprofits are Chamber members, and many are recognized at the annual Celebration of Nonprofits in December which includes a morning program aimed at helping nonprofits to better run their organizations. Hiway Federal Credit Union sponsors the Nonprofit of the Month Award, given to a deserving member at the monthly membership meeting.

Higher EducationThe Twin Cities has the second highest number of colleges and universities per capita in the nation, behind only Boston. The Midway is fortunate to have many of those institutions located in or near our community. These schools are not only places to receive an education, but they are community partners, employers, places for groundbreaking research and event hosts.

The University of St. Thomas unveiled a new logo and brand statement, “All for the Common Good” in early 2016.

New DevelopmentsOne of the oldest neighborhoods in Saint Paul, the Midway and surrounding areas are seeing a renaissance and many new development projects. Vandalia Tower, located at 550 Vandalia St., opened in 2015 in the old King Koil factory and is home to many businesses- several of which are part of the Creative Enterprise Zone. Another newly redeveloped building, 1000 University, also opened up in 2015 and offers beautiful office space. The building was also the temporary home for the Midway YMCA, which opened up its new facility at 1761 University Ave. in late 2015.

This is truly an exciting time to be in the Midway neighborhood. The future will see many new possibilities, while still encompassing many longstanding sites, businesses and organizations. Vandalia Tower opened in late 2015 with over 40 tenants

AmbassadorsThe Ambassadors mission is to welcome new members and new businesses to the Chamber and encourage their participation in Chamber activities. Ambassadors meet one-on-one with Chamber members to present annual membership certificates and represent the Chamber at community functions, groundbreakings, and business openings. Midway Monthly Membership LuncheonsOne of our most popular events, each month members have the chance to network with area businesses and listen to a special guest speaker. Dynamic speakers and great lunch venues make each lunch a worthwhile networking venture. The luncheons typically take place the 3rd Wednesday of every month.

Annual CelebrationThe Midway Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Celebration allows members to showcase their contributions to the community as well as entertain business clients. The Celebration includes presentation of Leadership Awards, entertainment, fabulous food, great people and fun activities. Members can walk away with great prizes from both a live and online auction featuring products and services donated by members.

Lunch on the Line

A Simple Way to Support Green Line Businesses

Everyone is encouraged to support local businesses as we promote the METRO Green Line. A program the Midway Chamber of Commerce has put together to help in this effort is ìLunch on the Line.î This program visits a different restaurant every other week for lunch in the Midway area, and was created in 2010 as a way to help support restaurants impacted by light rail construction.

Restaurants have now served hundreds of Lunch on the Line guests. To date, guests have attended more than 140 ìLunch on the Lineî events at restaurants along University, Snelling and neighboring streets.

Each fall, the chamber celebrates our lunch on the line restaurants by hosting a special Midway Chamber event, ìTaste of Lunch on the Line.î The event features over 15 different restaurants the chamber has visited over the course of the program. Participants are allowed to sip, sample and enjoy the delicacies of our community.

Education Series Sponsored by

These are learning opportunities hosted by local universities by the Midway Chamber of Commerce to build stronger businesses by providing educational opportunities on topics that are timely to

daily business needs. Through the year, the Chamber features a legislative panel session, a nonprofit seminar/workshop/expo and a leadership summit. These are opportunities for Chamber members to learn from other Chamber members. The Education Series events are held in conjunction with monthly luncheon events.

These popular free events occur throughout the year and provide a forum for members to network and develop new business contacts, showcase products and services and meet Chamber board members. The event audience includes entrepreneurs, managers, sales executives and more, as well as Chamber board members. Occasionally, the Midway Chamber All-Star band plays a set!

Economic Development SummitEach spring the Chamber hosts an annual Economic Development Summit. Now in its third year, the summit brings together business professionals, nonprofit leaders and city and state employees to discuss timely topics such as job growth, tools to grow your business, recruiting and retaining your workforce and much more. The half-day event features round table discussions, experts in their prospective fields of study and a keynote speaker for lunch.

Midway on the Fairway Presented by

The Midway on the Fairway Golf Tournament, presented by Warners’ Stellian, has become an important annual tradition for the Midway Chamber of Commerce and sells out each year. Proceeds from this event help the Midway Chamber keep dues affordable and enables the Chamber to continue to be a strong advocate for business in the Midway. 2015 First Place: Midway Express Car Wash

The Midway Chamber of Commerce announced five recipients of its 2016 Leadership Awards. The awards were presented at the chamber’s annual celebration event and recognize leading businesses, non-profits, and individuals, who go above and beyond in their support of the chamber and Midway community through volunteering of their time, staff and other resources. The winners are:

Grand Casino Mille Lacs–Hinckley – Large Business of the YearGrand Casino has been an active member of the Midway Chamber of Commerce for 10 years. It is rare the Chamber hosts an event where Grand Casino does not have a presence, whether it is seen in the attendance of Bob Schlichte or through sponsorship. The Chamber’s largest event of the year, the Annual Celebration, has occurred at the Saint Paul Intercontinental, a property owned by Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures. Grand Casino has consistently shown their support of us through their sponsorship at the President’s Circle, the highest level of sponsorship.

Bywater Business Solutions – Small Business of the YearSince 2011, Bywater Business Solutions has provided materials and swag for several chamber events. Chris Ferguson, owner of Bywater Business Systems, also sits on the Board as well as the planning committee for the Economic Development Summit. Bywater Business Solutions shows additional support of the Midway Chamber by being a key sponsor of the “Midway on the Fairway” annual golf tournament.

Twin Cities Jazz Festival – Non Profit of the YearTwin Cities Jazz Festival has been providing entertainment for the chamber’s Annual Celebration since 2011 when Doug Haining and the Twin Cities 7 took the stage at the Wabasha Street Caves. Steve Heckler and Twin Cities Jazz Festival have continually provided the entertainment as a way to support the chamber and this very important program. Steve and Kris Heckler also are members of the Events Committee.

Hiway Federal Credit Union – Rookie of the YearHiway Federal Credit Union joined the Midway Chamber and immediately became a member of the President’s Circle. Rare is there an event that we don’t see at least one member of the Hiway Federal Credit Union team. Whether it be a Ribbon Cutting, an Economic Development Committee meeting, a monthly membership luncheon or a team of 10 at the Shop with Cops event, they are active. In 2016, Hiway Federal Credit Union is sponsor of our new program, the Nonprofit of the Month award.

Cheryl O’Donnell, Visual Communications – Volunteer of the YearCheryl continually shows her support of the Midway Chamber year after year as she designs all logos, graphics and print material for the Annual Celebration, Economic Development Summit and the “Midway on the Fairway.” In addition, she sits on the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, the Events Committee and the Economic Development Summit planning committee. She is also one of the owners of a thriving business in the Midway which celebrated 25 years in 2016.
