Dear Friends,

Welcome to Maryland in Manhattan! Tonight, hundreds of Terps gather in New York for the seventh year to celebrate the University of Maryland and its amazing alumni.

It is truly a great time to be a Terp! Maryland’s athletic teams are soaring to new heights as members of the Big Ten Conference, thrilling alumni and fans in Maryland and around the country. Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams have seen tremendous success, as have our other varsity teams. The other B1G teams have learned to Fear the Turtle!

Behind it all is the University of Maryland’s stature as one of the world’s premier institutions of higher education. Just this month, we are showcasing our world-class commitment to innovation through 30 Days of Enterpreneurship, a celebration of the Fearless Ideas brought to life through the inspiration and diligence of our talented students, faculty, researchers and alumni.

And tonight, there are some truly outstanding Terps among us. We honor them for their professional achievements and for representing the best of what it means to be a University of Maryland graduate. I am delighted that we are gathered this evening to recognize and celebrate these accomplished alumni.

Once more, welcome to Maryland in Manhattan. Thank you for being here and for your continued support of the University of Maryland.

Go Terps!

One of the nation’s leading health authorities, Joy Bauer, M.S., R.D.N., is the nutrition and health expert for NBC’s

“Today” show, the founder of Nourish Snacks, a monthly columnist for Woman’s Day and the New York City Ballet’s official nutritionist. Joy is also the creator of JoyBauer.com, the women’s health expert for About.com and the author of 12 New York Times best-selling books. Her latest, From Junk Food to Joy Food, is based on her popular “Today” show series with co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. The pair challenges Joy to turn fattening favorites into delicious, diet-friendly fare and rewards success with a coveted “two carrots up.” The book is also the inspiration behind Joy’s

new pbs special, which is currently airing nationwide.

Earlier in her career, Joy was director of nutrition and fitness for the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, as well as the clinical dietitian for the hospital’s neurosurgical team. One of Joy’s most rewarding experiences was creating and implementing Heart Smart Kids, a health program for underprivileged children in Harlem and East Harlem. She also taught anatomy and physiology as well as sports nutrition at nyu’s School of Continuing Education.

Passionate about delivering scientifically sound, realistic information to millions, Joy has received numerous awards, including the National Media

Excellence Award from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Nutrition Science Media Award from the American Society of Nutrition.

When she’s not dishing out health information or sharing delicious recipes on TV, you’ll find Joy making a mess in her kitchen or spending quality time at home with her husband, three kids and cuddly canine companion, Gatsby.

Melissa Goidel is chief revenue officer at Refinery29, where she is responsible for the company’s global monetization strategy, including advertising, mobile and video products and sales, and product and content marketing.

A digital sales veteran for more than 20 years, Melissa uses a unique “prosumer” approach at Refinery29 in communicating media innovation to trade and marketing audiences.
