REAL SALT LAKE vs SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES RIO TINTO STADIUM, Sandy, Utah

    July 22, 2016 (WEEK 20, MLS Game #199) 9 p.m. MT (UniMás / UDN; KMYU-12)

A crucial match in the Western Conference is ahead on Viernes de Fútbol when Real Salt Lake play host to the San Jose Earthquakes at Rio Tinto Stadium. The teams sit on opposite sides of the red line, separated by just five points in the conference standings. Real saw their winless run extended to five games last weekend, playing to a scoreless draw with the New England Revolution on their home ground. The Quakes improbably snapped a seven-game winless run of their own, going down two men yet coming back for a 2-1 win over Toronto FC on Saturday evening at Avaya Stadium. REFEREE: Jair Marrufo. The teams evenly split their season series a year ago. Each club won at Avaya Stadium by 1-0 scorelines; when the Quakes in the final meeting, on Sept. 27, it was their first home win vs. Real since 2012. RSL had won twice on their previous four visits to San Jose, with two draws.

The teams reached a 1-1 draw in their only meeting last year at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Quakes have won on two of their last five trips to Rio Tinto Stadium (with one draw).

Coaches record: Jeff Cassar vs. SJ: P6 W2 L1 D3 … Dominic Kinnear vs. RSL: P30 W12 L6 D8 REAL SALT LAKE Real Salt Lake had their winless streak stretched to five matches, reaching a goalless draw with the New England Revolution on Saturday evening at Rio Tinto Stadium. Real are in fourth place in the Western Conference with 30 points from 20 games. LAST MATCH

Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth was credited with two saves on the night, his best on a 14th-minute redirection from close range from Kyle Beckerman that had pace.

Real goalkeeper Nick Rimando was credited with one save, a breakaway stop against Diego Fagundez in the 74th minute. The Revs appeared to have scored through Kei Kamara in the 50th minute but referee Ismail Elfath ruled it out because of a foul.

RSL head coach Jeff Cassar made six changes to the team that fell 2-0 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Nick Rimando came in between the posts for Jeff Attinella, Demar Phillips started on the backline for Chris Wingert, Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales came into the midfield in place of John Stertzer and Omar Holness, and Juan Manuel Martinez and Joao Plata entered the front line for Olmes Garcia and Jordan Allen.

REAL SALT LAKE (4-2-1-3): Nick Rimando - Tony Beltran, Justen Glad, Aaron Maund, Demar Phillips - Kyle Beckerman, Luke Mulholland (John Stertzer 89) - Javier Morales - Juan Manuel Martinez, Yura Movsisyan (Olmes Garcia 77), Joao Plata (Jordan Allen 67).

TEAM NEWS Real Salt Lake have now gone five games without a victory, their longest winless spell since April 11-May 6 of

last year. They haven’t gone six games without a win since the 2011 campaign. It was a third consecutive draw at home for RSL, who are still undefeated at Rio Tinto Stadium (5-0-4), one of

five teams still without a loss on their home ground.

“We have to keep believing in the things that we’re doing. We’re doing a lot of things right, not being rewarded for it. Tonight we got a shutout. I think that was very important for the group. We’ve tried to make it a big talking point in these last few games. Tonight it happened for us,” said RSL head coach Jeff Cassar.

Said goalkeeper Nick Rimando: “I think our focus again is always team defense and if we can continue to get zeros on the road, or at home we will continue to get our chances, and those chances will turn into goals. There is no doubt about that, but again it is frustrating, but this shutout is a step in the right direction.”

Real have been shut out at the attacking end in back-to-back games, now 191 minutes since their last goal in league play. They have been shut out three times in the last five matches; it was their fifth offensive shutout of the season (four of those on the road).

“We have full confidence in all of our players to score, but right now I feel like it’s my son’s soccer net that he’s playing on. It’s just small right now. We got to keep putting ourselves into positions to be successful,” said Cassar. “I think we’re doing that, we’re just not being rewarded for our play. … We’ve got to hit the target no matter what.”

It was the third defensive shutout of the season, the first since recording back-to-back 1-0 shutout wins vs. Colorado and Vancouver on April 9-16. That’s tied for second-fewest shutouts by a team in MLS this season (Orlando City SC, 2).

“I think the last 4-5 games we kept stressing to keep that shutout,” said Rimando. “Tonight, it feels good to get that for sure to get us back on track, but leaving two [points] out there hurts.”

After ringing in the changes for the midweek fixture vs. Vancouver, there were just two changes in the team for the New England match, from the group that reached a 1-1 draw vs. Montréal the weekend before at Rio Tinto. Tony Beltran came in at fullback for Demar Phillips, and Luke Mulholland started in place of Omar Holness.

“Joao [Plata] has fought extremely hard to get back into the starting lineup. I thought he was dangerous and maybe we just weren’t that super sharpness that we need to put the ball in the back of the net, but that will come,” Cassar said. “… I thought our backline held strong and I thought Kyle and Luke worked their tails off defensively for us, but it really wasn’t a surprise.”

On Tuesday, Real Salt Lake fell 2-1 in a friendly with Italian Serie A giant Internazionale, the winning goal coming in second-half stoppage time. Jordan Allen netted Real’s lone goal, giving them an 18th-minute lead.

Here’s the RSL team: Jeff Attinella (Lalo Fernandez 62’); Tony Beltran (Boyd Okwuonu 31’), Jamison Olave (Chris Schuler 58’), Justen Glad (Phanuel Kavita 31’), Chris Wingert (Demar Phillips 62’); Kyle Beckerman (Danilo Acosta 31’), John Stertzer (Luke Mulholland 62’); Juan Manuel Martinez (Omar Holness 31’), Jordan Allen (Andrew Brody 46’), Joao Plata (Ricardo Velazco 31’, Kevaughn Frater 77’); Yura Movsisyan (Olmes Garcia 31’).

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes put an end to their seven-game winless streak in dramatic fashion, scoring the winning goal while two men down for a 2-1 win against Toronto FC on Saturday evening at Avaya Stadium. The Quakes are in eighth place in the Western Conference with 25 points from 19 games. LAST MATCH

The Quakes hit for the opener on 30 minutes in, as Fatai Alashe sent in a pinpoint low cross from the left flank, where Quincy Amarikwa redirected it home from the heart of the area.

TFC received a boost in the 43rd minute, as San Jose midfielder Anibal Godoy was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Tsubasa Endoh. Barely a minute later, Toronto leveled the score, as Justin Morrow was in the right place in the right time to tap in a cross from right in front of net.

A second red card was issued to the Earthquakes in the 53rd minute, as Alberto Quintero was sent off for a studs-up challenge on Endoh, reducing the home side to nine men.

But the Quakes took an unlikely lead in the 70th minute, when Simon Dawkins cut inside with the ball near the top of the box and unleashed a shot that beat TFC 'keeper Alex Bono.

Quakes head coach Dominic Kinnear made two changes to the team that fell 1-0 to FC Dallas at Avaya Stadium. Jordan Stewart came into central defense for Marvell Wynne, and Fatai Alashe came into the team in place of Shea Salinas.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): David Bingham - Cordell Cato, Victor Bernardez, Jordan Stewart, Shaun Francis - Alberto Quintero (ejected 53), Fatai Alashe, Anibal Godoy (ejected 42), Simon Dawkins (Chad Barrett 89) - Chris Wondolowski (Adam Jahn 87), Quincy Amarikwa (Shea Salinas 58).

TEAM NEWS The win was the first for the Quakes in league play since May 11, a 3-1 home win vs. Houston. They went 0-3-

4 over their seven-game winless streak, their longest since the club-record 16-game winless run over the final three months of the 2014 season and start of 2015.

“It definitely can be a turning point and I told the guys that. That just shows you the attitude you have. Obviously things were against us at different times of the evening, but the attitude was fantastic and I said that

  • MLS GAME INFORMATION

should be our attitude every game, no matter what. So hopefully it's a sign of good things to come,” said Quakes head coach Dominic Kinnear.

The Quakes also won for the first time in club history after receiving two red cards in a game, the fifth time that has occurred. The Quakes were the first team to win a game after receiving two red cards in a game since Philadelphia Union did it vs. Chivas USA on April 21, 2012.

The last team to score the winning goal after going two men down in a game in MLS, playing nine men vs. 11, was the Dallas Burn vs. Colorado on Aug. 7, 2004. All-time, teams receiving two or more red cards in a game have posted a record of 13 wins, 36 defeats, 19 draws.

“We set up our formation the way it is, just gave the guys certain hints about the roles we want them to play and you just kind of hope it goes – usually when you play with 10 men you're going to need more defending but you're going to need that little bit of individual magic I think most of the time, or a set piece, to win you the game,” said Kinnear. “ … The second half seemed to last about six hours. Especially after Alberto [Quintero] got sent off. And you're just willing them to win and I think the thing was, they were willing themselves to win, which was even better.”

Said Chris Wondolowski: “It’s definitely not something that I was really expecting. I was hoping to just keep it tied, get a point out of it. … We’re definitely hoping this can be a catalyst. We need a little bit of that. I feel like we’ve played well in different games but haven’t necessarily gotten the results that we’ve wanted.”

Simon Dawkins scored the game-winning goal, his second goal of the season, his first since April 30. “We definitely need to turn the corner. Hopefully this is the game where we can show everybody what we can do,” Dawkins said.

Quincy Amarikwa scored his second goal of the season, his first since the second game of the year, the March 13 victory vs. Portland. Amarikwa was making a seventh consecutive start, the first time since May 28 he did not play the full 90 minutes.

Jordan Stewart made his second start of the league campaign, his first since June 1, coming in at central defense and playing the full 90 minutes. He started at left back in his first start.

In the days following the match, both red cards, issued to Alberto Quintero and Anibal Godoy, were rescinded following reviews by the Independent Review Panel. Both Quintero and Godoy will be available for selection for the Real Salt Lake contest.

“We have depth. We have guys who we can play. You look at Matias [Perez Garcia] who has a chance to help this team once again. We are still enjoying tonight. We know it was improbable and we want to continue with good play,” said defender Victor Bernardez.

CURRENT EARTHQUAKES VS. REAL SALT LAKE (8-9-8)

  • 2016 REAL SALT LAKE STORYLINES TO WATCH RSL v. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES

    RIO TINTO STADIUM – Fri., July 22, 2016 – 9:00 p.m. MT

CRITICAL THREE POINTS AT STAKE FRIDAY: Friday’s nationally-televised “Viernes de Futbol” contest at Rio Tinto Stadium against the San Jose Earthquakes concludes a stretch of RSL home games that has seen the Claret-and-Cobalt unable to take advantage … RSL has not won since June 22 against the Red Bulls, a span of five MLS contests … Add in a pair of Open Cup draws (with shootout tiebreakers) and Tuesday’s stoppage-time loss in an international exhibition against Italian power Inter Milan, RSL has just one win in the 10 matches played since the Copa America hiatus in early June … Friday’s match is RSL’s 9th at home in 11 overall matches in the last 5 weeks, the club capturing only 7 of a possible 15 points in league action … RSL has dropped both road matches in this period by identical 0-2 scorelines at Dallas and at Vancouver … SHUTOUT DROUGHT COMES TO AN END vs. NEW ENGLAND: RSL posted a clean sheet Saturday night at home against New England, snapping a run that saw the club concede in an RSL-record 15 consecutive games dating back to April 16 against Vancouver, a 1-0 win in its last previous defensive performance … BUT ATTACKING WOES CONTINUE: However, RSL failed to score again, finding the back of the net in the run of play just once in the last six MLS or Open Cup contests dating back to June 22 … Penalty kicks by Joao Plata and Yura Movsisyan in that span have rescued points for RSL, but only Juan Manuel Martinez has scored a non-PK goal since Jordan Allen’s game-winner against the Red Bulls … That June 22 victory came at the tail end of a run that saw RSL score 15 goals in its previous 6 games … RIMANDO STILL JUST ONE WIN AWAY FROM HARTMAN: With the June 22 victory, RSL GK Nick Rimando now sits just one win away from matching former Dallas/LA/KC/NY ‘keeper Kevin Hartman’s MLS-record 180 career wins … Rimando is also set this summer to eclipse the fellow UCLA man in minutes, games, saves, and starts as well … Rimando made his 400th career MLS regular-season appearance earlier this season in LA, while last week’s clean sheet against New England extended his all-time MLS shutout record with the 126th of his career (90 in an RSL uniform) … Rimando – now in his 10th year with RSL and his 18th in MLS – is a Montclair, Calif., native and former UCLA ‘keeper who returned to his Southern California home to make his 400th career MLS regular-season appearance (all starts), just the second-ever player to attain the threshold (GK Kevin Hartman, 416) … Legendary USA MetroStars and Kansas City GK Tony Meola ranks #2 in all-time starts without an appearance off the bench, with (only) 250 … PERSONAL-HIGH 17 OF RIMANDO’S SHUTOUTS STALL RAPIDS: While RSL GK Nick Rimando’s career MLS shutout #124 nearly came in Orlando on opening day – the final 65 seconds obviously changed that – it was finally added to the record books April 9 against Colorado, against whom the Wall of the Wasatch has amassed 17 of his 126 career shutouts, his highest total vs. one team ... July 16 against New England, Rimando extended his MLS-record total for clean sheets to 126 (with 90 coming in an RSL kit) … Victims over the last 18 cumulative seasons, in descending order: Colorado (17), Chicago / Chivas / San Jose (10 each), Red Bulls and New England (9 each), LA Galaxy (8), Columbus & D.C. (7 each), Kansas City (6), Dallas / Houston / Toronto / Portland (5 each), Vancouver (3), Philadelphia (2), Montreal, NYCFC and Tampa Bay (1 each) ...

LATEST RSL INJURY REPORT (Wed., 7/20) OUT:

FW Emery Welshman (hip flexor 3/10) MF Sunday Stephen (face 6/22)

    PROBABLE:

RIMANDO’S MLS HISTORY AGAINST SPOT KICKS: Despite allowing NYCFC’s David Villa to convert a late penalty kick on June 2 at Yankee Stadium, RSL GK Nick Rimando has achieved legendary status as a PK stopper in MLS play, stoning Steven Gerrard at LA April 23 and denying opponents on a total of 18 of 46 attempts during his 10 MLS seasons with RSL, his 8 PK saves in the 2013-16 seasons doubling the total of any other GK … For his MLS career, Rimando has saved 27 of 76 attempts from the spot, in addition to his scintillating efforts in shootout tiebreakers to enable RSL to advance to and win MLS Cup 2009 (also engaged in playoff PK shootouts in 2004 with D.C. United and 2013 for RSL) … MORE MILESTONES FOR WALL OF THE WASATCH: Rimando – known affectionately as the “Wall of the Wasatch” by MLS fans – made his 300th career RSL appearance (all competitions in the 10 seasons from 2007-present) in the April 30th 2-1 win over Houston, one which will be remembered for his 80th-minute “face save” to secure the three points for RSL … SO SO CLOSE TO ROAD CLEAN SHEET: Back on April 2 at Kansas City, RSL was one disputed PK call away from a potential road clean sheet, as the 89th-minute lunge outside the box from MF John Stertzer was adjudged by Referee Ted Unkel – Thursday’s man in the middle – to be in the box, allowing SKC man Dom Dwyer to convert the spot kick against GK Jeff Attinella … That’s the only goal RSL had conceded in the month of April prior to the 2-5 LA debacle, in 270 minutes of action, on the heels of an eventful March that saw RSL allow 5 goals in three games, including four late goals at Orlando and Portland in red-card-marred contests … PLAY TO THE FINAL WHISTLE: While RSL has come from behind to earn victories four times already this season, including the July 1st 1-1 draw against D.C. United, it has also allowed stoppage-time goals to end shutout bids on three occasions (3/6 @ ORL, 4/2 @ KC and 7/1 v. DCU), conceding points to the opposition twice in those instances … POINTS FROM A LOSING POSITION: The June 22 win vs. NYRB was also RSL’s fourth win this season (out of eight) after conceding the opening goal, as RSL also came from behind against both Seattle and Houston at home earlier in 2016, and on the road at NYCFC in early June … All of last year, it took RSL 30 games to notch a come-from-behind victory, Oct. 4 at Colorado … On June 14 in Open Cup, RSL battled back from conceding the opening goal and digging an 0-2 hole to earn the draw and win in PKs …

    RIO TINTO STADIUM – Fri., July 22, 2016 – 9:00 p.m. MT

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES DESPITE HOME RECORD: Even with the disappointment from the active streak of four consecutive home draws, RSL remains unbeaten at home at 5-0-4 in MLS play and 5-0-7 overall (includes CCL and Open Cup) … Combined with the second-best road mark in MLS that has included two road victories over rival Sporting Kansas City, RSL has shown a resilience thus far to stay among the league’s top teams, currently posting the 5th-best PPG average in MLS (1.50) … RSL YOUTH MOVEMENT RECOGNIZED BY DONOVAN, MLS: A league-high four Real Salt Lake players are selected to represent the Claret-and-Cobalt next week at the 2016 MLS Chipotle Homegrown Game, as MLS and U.S. National Team legend Landon Donovan announced the roster last week … RSL’s homegrown quartet – midfielders Danilo Acosta and Jordan Allen and defenders Justen Glad and Phanuel Kavita – are recognized amongst the league’s most accomplished young stars, who will take on the Mexico Under-20 National Team in the third annual Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. MT on Wednesday, July 27 from Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif. … “The invitation of four RSL homegrown players to this event is a phenomenal development for which the entire Real Salt Lake organization should take great pride,” said RSL General Manager Craig Waibel. “Credit should go to the setup implemented by our Owner, Dell Loy Hansen, whose support of our academy and investment in our development infrastructure is unparalleled.” “In Casa Grande, Ariz., Martin Vasquez and his staff are doing a fantastic job of preparing our kids mentally, physically, tactically and technically to challenge for professional minutes, at both the MLS and USL levels, within one-two-three years,” continued Waibel. “Obviously, with our structure, the Real Monarchs play a huge role in developing both the individual and the collective, so Freddy Juarez and his staff clearly deserve a ton of credit as well.” BECKERMAN ALSO INCLUDED IN MIDSUMMER SHOWCASE: RSL captain Kyle Beckerman was named Sunday to the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Gameday Roster as one of two Commissioner’s Picks by MLS Commissioner Don Garber, joining some of Major League Soccer’s best to take on English club Arsenal FC in the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif. on July 28 at 5:30 p.m. MT, live on ESPN, UniMás, UDN, TSN, and RDS … “It’s always a great honor when I go represent RSL and a great opportunity for MLS to go against a world-class powerhouse in Arsenal,” Beckerman said. “It will be a really good challenge for our team and one that will be really fun to be a part of.” This is Beckerman’s ninth MLS All-Star selection (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016) after missing the 2015 showcase for the first time since joining RSL in 2007. Beckerman is the all-time MLS leader among field players with 392 matches played. This year, he has been a key element of RSL’s hot start to the season that has the Claret-and-Cobalt fourth in the Western Conference at 8-6-6. “Any time you get a chance to represent the league is remarkable. It’s quite a feat,” Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel said. “Being a Commissioner’s pick means he’s done a lot on and off the field to warrant it. We are proud of what he has done for the club and for the league this season and throughout his career.”

SUNNY UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY: Three weeks ago, RSL announced that MF Sunday Stephen underwent successful procedures to repair a fractured cheekbone and orbital on his right side, suffered in the first half of Real Salt Lake’s 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls at home on June 22 … The surgeries were performed by Dr. Thomas Oberg, Dr. John Bennett and Dr. Stoker at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center on June 29 … “It was a significant fracture, but the surgery went great,” said Team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Andrew Cooper. “In six weeks he will be evaluated to determine how quickly he can return to the field.” “Sunny,” 27, is in his first MLS season and has been instrumental in helping the club’s hot start to the year, scoring one goal and adding one assist from his holding midfield position in 12 starts this season … “We are thankful to the doctors at Salt Lake Regional that made this surgery a success,” RSL General Manager Craig Waibel said. “The most important thing is that Sunny gets healthy and we are glad that he should be back in time to contribute for us again this season.” SCHEDULE CONGESTION DICTATES LINEUP CHANGES: Prior to 210 minutes of action to kick off July, RSL boss Jeff Cassar made 10 lineup changes from the 2-1 win vs. New York Red Bulls on June 22 in advance of an 0-2 loss at Dallas on June 25, with only MF Luke Mulholland reprising his starting role … MF Javier Morales, FW Juan Manuel Martinez, MF Sunday Stephen and DF Aaron Maund did not travel, while GK Nick Rimando, DF Tony Beltran, DF Demar Phillips, DF Justen Glad, FW Yura Movsisyan and FW Joao Plata were each on the bench at Dallas … Nine of the Dallas starters combined for just 193 career MLS selections, fewer than each of the other two starters, DF Chris Wingert (271) and DF Jamison Olave (202) … YOUTH REIGNS SUPREME AT DALLAS: RSL rookie MF Omar Holness made his full RSL debut in MLS action on June 25 after logging just 3 minutes 11 days prior in Open Cup action, while DF Boyd Okwuonu made his 2nd career start (1-3 L at Colorado on July 11, 2015) … DF Phanuel Kavita, an SLC Highland High School product, made his 3rd career MLS start at Dallas (2-2 T at Columbus 6/27/15 and 0-4 L at Vancouver last August) … MF Luke Mulholland led the valiant Metroplex effort with his 60th career start, followed by FW Olmes Garcia (36), FW Devon Sandoval (36), GK Jeff Attinella (27), MF Jordan Allen (19) and MF John Stertzer (18) … Garcia’s start Saturday was his first of the season, while Sandoval made just his second …

LATE RIOT DRAMA v. RED BULLS: RSL hit Texas on a high, however, buoyed by the 88th minute game-winning goal from substitute MF Jordan Allen at home June 22, completing the comeback win over the visiting Red Bulls … Allen’s goal – RSL’s 500th in club history through 372 MLS contests over 12 seasons – was the 4th of his career and the 3rd of the year, pairing with a Yura Movsisyan header midway through the second half to improve to 5-0-5 all-time at home against the Red Bulls … That win improved RSL to 5-0-1 in MLS play at home, after a quartet of 1-goal wins in March and April … The lone blemish was the 2-2 draw against Portland on June 18, which did snap the Timbers’ 3-game win streak at Rio Tinto Stadium, a record for a visiting side …

BELTRAN FIRST TO SUCCUMB TO YELLOW CARD PERIL: With his 19th minute booking July 1 vs. DCU, RSL DF Tony Beltran received his 5th caution of the season, forcing him to miss the July 9 contest against Montreal … Beltran has called the Wasatch Front home since 2008, and entered this season coming off a 2015 All-Star campaign that saw him lead the club in minutes (2,774) and starts (31), second only to FW Olmes Garcia (33) in appearances (31) … The Iron Man has appeared in all but 24 of the last 194 starting selections since the beginning of 2012 in either Jeff Cassar’s or Jason Kreis’ XI across all competitions, after battling Robbie Russell and Chris Wingert for time early in his career as part of a three-outside back rotation … AND BECKERMAN, AS WELL: And with his 76th minute booking Saturday vs. Montreal, RSL Captain Kyle Beckerman missed the midweek trip to Vancouver for the same reason … The Captain returned last Saturday against New England … STILL, HOME COOKING TASTES SO GOOD: Despite the recent glut of home draws, since the beginning of 2008 RSL now boasts a 103-22-46 mark in its last 171 home games (all comps) in that span on Utah soil, during which it has outscored opponents by 173 goals (298-125), with an 82-17-40 reg. season mark (242/101), an 8-1-2 CCL record (21/7), a 5-2-2 playoff performance (11/4), as well as an 8-2-2 Open Cup mark (24/13) ... RSL SEEKS TO RESTORE ROAR AT RIOT FORTRESS: RSL ended its disappointing 2015 campaign with a home 12-4-6 record across all competitions (just a 7-4-6 RioT mark in MLS play), with the pair of late-season 0-1 losses to Portland & Dallas just the club’s 4th & 5th shutout losses in its last 49 home games overall, dating back to the 2013 Open Cup Final ... The six draws at home equaled the club’s all-time season high, set in 2006 and 2008 ... Last year’s ignominy snapped a 7-year run that had seen RSL average 2.00 points per game or more at home each MLS season from 2008-14, as well as a 5-year streak of 10 or more home wins in league play … RIOT LIGHT AT END OF TUNNEL: Despite playing 13 of its first 20 games to this point away from home, RSL’s 1.50 points-per-game average on the strength of its 8-6-6 record / 30 points from 20 games is 5th-best in MLS … RSL remains on an excellent pace for 51 points in 2016 … RSL also sees another late-season stretch of six out of eight at home from late August to late October, prior to the season finale at Seattle on Oct. 23 … ATTACKING TRIO CARRYING THE LOAD: RSL FW Juan Manuel "Burrito" Martinez (5 goals in his last 9 starts) and FW Yura Movsisyan (5 goals in his last 8 starts) are joined by FW Joao Plata as scorers of 18 MLS goals this season for the Claret-and-Cobalt … Movsisyan’s equalizer July 9 against Montreal was his 22nd in an RSL uniform (reg. season only), pushing him closer to a 6th place tie all-time in the Claret/Cobalt Golden Boot race … Yura trails Saborio, Morales, Findley, Espindola, Plata and Beckerman (just 3 goals shy of his two current teammates) as he continues to rise up the ranks … Plata boasts 8 goals and 7 assists across all competitions this season (the only RSL player to have scored in CCL, MLS and Open Cup this season), accounting for nearly 50% of the club’s goals … The Ecuadoran’s 5 goals and 6 assists in MLS action gave RSL the unique distinction of being the first MLS club this season with three players that each have 5 or more MLS goals, since joined by PHI/VAN …

RARE OWN-GOAL GAME-WINNERS AT KC, NYC: The 3-1 win at Kansas City on May 21 was the rare RSL game-winner credited to an own goal, as that game saw the ultimate decider slammed home off Brad Davis by a thundering Yura Movsisyan cross just before halftime … Only the 3rd in RSL’s 374-game MLS reg. season history … Two weeks later, Javier Morales’ offering glanced off NYC defender Frederic Brillant, for RSL’s 2nd OG game-winner in a 3-game stretch, after boasting (?) only 2 in the previous 364 league matches … WHILE GLAD VICTIMIZED IN COLUMBUS, and NOW VANCOUVER: A week after the 2-1 win at KC on May 21, RSL conceded its first own goal of the season, as a sliding Aaron Maund tackle on Crew FW Justin Meram caromed off the onrushing leg of fellow centerback Justen Glad, the teenager victimized with an OG for the first time in his young career … Last Wednesday at Vancouver, Glad was “credited” with an OG again, this time as a Tony Beltran clearance slammed off his chest and past GK Jeff Attinella … RSL had last conceded on OG back on March 19, 2015, at home against Philadelphia, when DF Jamison Olave was credited in a 3-3 draw … Prior to benefiting on May 21 at KC and June 2 in NYC, RSL’s last OG received was back in April, 2012, in a home win over Toronto, as DF Richard Eckersley was victimized … PLATA RETURNS TO STARTING XI AFTER ABSENCE: RSL FW Joao Plata – who had not started in three consecutive weekends after suffering a hip flexor strain in training April 20 – returned to action several weeks ago at Colorado off the bench, and returned to the XI each of the last four MLS weeks at HOU / KC / CLB / NYC, with a scintillating substitute appearance last Tuesday … Prior to his injury, Plata assaulted the league leaderboards, having scored or assisted in a six consecutive games, one off the club record (MF Javier Morales, Aug.-Sept. 2014) … Plata added yet another game-winning assist April 16 against Vancouver, just one week after scoring the game-winner in the 1-0 home win over Colorado to bring his 2016 total to 4 goals / 4 assists on the young season … The diminutive Ecuadoran was also robbed of another assist as FW Yura Movsisyan’s legitimate goal against Colorado that would have given RSL a 2-0 scoreline was disallowed … Plata – now in his fourth season with RSL – had scored or assisted on nine of RSL’s 11 goals in CONCACAF and MLS play this season (prior to the 4 scored in his absence), with only FW Yura Movsisyan’s “strip-streak” past Nat Borchers 3/19 at Portland and the long-range Luke Mulholland seeing-eye blast in Kansas City outside Plata’s influence … RSL catalyst Joao Plata owns three goals and three assists in the last eight games across all competitions (including USOC), despite missing his first career penalty kick May 28 at Columbus (now 3-4 all-time from the spot for RSL, 4-5 in MLS career including 1-1 w/ Toronto) …

RSL LOOKING TO REBOUND FROM NON-PLAYOFF 2015: RSL’s 4-0-2 start to the season earned the club the distinction of being the last MLS side to suffer a loss, which happened with a dismal first-half performance in a 2-5 loss at LA on April 23 … Overall, RSL is ultimately seeking a return to the postseason after not qualifying in 2015, its first non-playoff year in eight seasons, dating back to 2007… Last year saw an unprecedented amount of change due to roster turnover, injury and the demands of learning a new formation … Despite the disappointment in league play, RSL did advance to the Semifinals of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, losing at eventual champion Sporting Kansas City, and won its 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League group with a 3-0-1 mark (10 points), earning the 3rd overall seed in this year’s CCL Quarterfinal stage, where it was ousted 3-1 on aggregate by Mexican power Tigres UANL … INTERNATIONAL CALLS DISSIPATING: For several years, RSL has been ravaged with international call-ups throughout the season, but this Summer’s Copa America claims only Claret-and-Cobalt Captain Kyle Beckerman, as GK Nick Rimando was left off the USA roster after inclusion in the 40-man preliminary group … Jamaican DF Demar Phillips and MF Omar Holness also did not receive invites to the final 23, as Jeff Cassar’s options throughout May/June remain relatively intact … Ecuadoran FW Joao Plata was not even included in his nation’s 40-man potential list … In past seasons, Alvaro Saborio (Costa Rica), Abdoulie Mansally (The Gambia), Enoc Vasquez (Guatemala), Luis Gil (USA U-23), Carlos Salcedo (MEX U-23) have missed time in MLS play due to international duty, as have current USA youth players Justen Glad, Jordan Allen and Sebastian Saucedo …

#SWISSARMYKNIFE JORDAN ALLEN STEPS UP: Prior to his game-winner on June 22, RSL’s dynamic third-year player Jordan Allen last found the back of the net May 28 in Ohio to spark RSL’s comeback attempt at Columbus, his second of the season … Back on April 30 against Houston Allen tallied his first of the year, a dramatic equalizer just minutes after the Dynamo took a 1-0 lead … Allen was sprung by fellow RSL homegrown Justen Glad, who combined with fellow centerback Jamison Olave to win the ball back after a recycled corner kick and spring Allen in alone … Earlier in the year, Allen stepped up for his first-ever start at the #10 spot in the 2-1 victory March 12 against Seattle … The win – without MF Javier Morales, the team’s midfield maestro out with a hip injury suffered in the 2-2 draw at Orlando – was the first in eight games played without the 10th-year Argentine since May 14, 2015, in a 2-1 win at Chicago … RSL now boasts four wins without the maestro this season, equaling its total from the previous 42 games … Tuesday against Inter Milan (ITA), Allen manned the #10 spot and scored the exhibition’s opening goal, getting his foot on a cross into the box and redirecting in the 18th minute … MOVING ON WITHOUT MAUND IN MIDDLE: Midway through the first half April 30 against Houston, RSL DF Aaron Maund suffered a hamstring strain after getting tangled up in a tackle from behind by Dynamo FW Giles Barnes, forcing the former Notre Dame man out in the 36th minute … To that point of the year, Maund had been the lone RSL player to have played every minute of the season (666 in MLS play, 180 in CCL action), emerging from deep on the 2015 preseason depth chart to have now started 41 of RSL’s last 44 games across all competitions … Maund missed each of the 2 trips to Colorado and Houston, but returned to stellar form in the XI at Kansas City after receiving PRP therapy on the hamstring on May 2 … MOVSISYAN GAME-WINNER REKINDLES MEMORIES: RSL FW Yura Movsisyan found the back of the net April 30 with a game-winner against Houston, the goal his first on Utah soil since October, 2009, a 3-0 win over Colorado that clinched a playoff berth for RSL and simultaneously eliminated the Rapids for the third consecutive season … Yura’s 2nd goal of the year was his first since March 19 at Portland, stripping Nat Borchers and sprinting 55 yards towards goal before calmly slotting a lefty shot past Adam Kwarasey to give RSL a 2-0 lead in Portland … Despite the 6+ year gap, Yura only went two reg. season MLS games without scoring (technically) … With his equalizer June 22 against Red Bulls, Movsisyan has now scored 5 goals in his last 8 games, one of which was a 90th-minute sub at Columbus after battling strep throat that week … The red-hot form has seen Movsisyan surpass both Jason Kreis and Jeff Cunningham on the all-time golden boot list for the club, moving into 7th place all time (Saborio, Morales, Findley, Espindola, Beckerman, Plata) … Yura’s PK July 9 against Montreal was his fifth goal in his last 8 starts … YURA’S BACK!: RSL entered 2016 buoyed by the return of the club’s sixth all-time leading scorer, as FW Yura Movsisyan has been loaned from Spartak Moscow of the Russian Premier League for 2016 … Yura scored 15 goals in 50 appearances for RSL from 2007-09, culminating in MLS Cup 2009 … Reunited with fellow RSL champions Kyle Beckerman, Nick Rimando, Chris Wingert, Tony Beltran, Jamison Olave and Javier Morales, the man who scored 70 goals in 177 Danish / Russian Premier League or Armenian National Team games since departing RSL stated simply upon his return: “I’m here to win Championships.” …

    RIO TINTO STADIUM – Fri., July 22, 2016 – 9:00 p.m. MT

RSL SNAPS FUTILITY STREAK AGAINST VANCOUVER: While the April 16 RSL 1-0 win over Vancouver was the club’s 101ST on Utah soil since 2008 – averaging 2.12 points per game while posting an impressive 101-22-40 mark across all competitions in that time – the club had not defeated the Whitecaps since September, 2013, when a shock 1-0 win at BC Place occurred three days prior to that year’s Open Cup Final … Prior to that week, RSL was 0-4-2 overall against the Whitecaps since that time, including a 0-1-2 mark at Rio Tinto Stadium (including last season’s 0-1 home loss that saw red card ejections to DF Jamison Olave and FW Sebastian Saucedo, as well as the Whitecaps’ stoppage-time equalizer in 2014 … Last year’s Whitecaps win at the RioT was the first for a Canadian side in 16 all-time Vancouver/Montreal/Toronto visits to Utah … RSL’s RED CARD EPIDEMIC STARTED WITH VANCOUVER VISIT: In the March 19 2-2 draw at Portland, RSL saw MF Kyle Beckerman and DF Jamison Olave each ejected, RSL’s second and third red cards in the young MLS season … Following DF Demar Phillips’ ejection 22 minutes into the March 6 opener at Orlando, the ejections continue a disturbing trend, as 2015 saw the club set a dubious new mark for RSL with 9 red cards in 34 games, surpassing the club’s season-record 7 set in 2013, 2011 and 2009 ... Outside MLS competition last year, FW Olmes Garcia was shown a straight red for a late tackle behind play Aug. 12 at Kansas City in the 1-3 elimination from the Open Cup, while on Sept. 15 in the CCL, MF John Stertzer was ejected in the 81st after receiving his second yellow card just 6 minutes after his first, causing RSL to play with 10 men the final 10’ and forcing Stertzer out of the home Santa Tecla tilt ... Additionally, RSL head coach Jeff Cassar was dismissed in two games last year (Aug. 4 at VAN and July 11 at COL, post-game) ... RSL has now played 440 games across all competitions in its 12-year history – 372 MLS reg. season, 21 MLS Cup Playoff, 25 Open Cup and 22 CONCACAF Champions League – and has been reduced to nine men in a game just 5 times, but just once at home (last April’s 0-1 loss to Vancouver started a run of 3 double-reds in the last 46 games overall, 36 in MLS play) ... The list:

    Feb. 22, 2011 (CCL) @ Columbus - 0:0 T (Beltran/Borchers) April 21, 2012 (MLS) @ San Jose - 1:3 L (Olave/Espindola) April 18, 2015 (MLS) v Vancouver - 0:1 L (Olave/Saucedo) June 24, 2015 (MLS) @ Red Bulls - 0:1 L (Morales/Phillips) March 19, 2016 (MLS) @ Portland – 2:2 T (Beckerman/Olave)

OLAVE SETS DUBIOUS MARK: With the red card on March 19 at Portland, RSL DF Jamison Olave now owns the dubious distinction of being the all-time expulsion leader in Major League Soccer’s 21-year history, with 10 ejections in 205 career games played … RSL Captain Kyle Beckerman – who is the league’s all-time yellow card (89) and fouls committed (592) leader, in part due to appearing in more games than any field player in MLS history (389) – received his fourth all-time red card, and his first since 2012, on March 19 … HOME-OPENING DRAMA AGAINST SEATTLE: RSL improved to 5-0-7 all-time on Utah soil in MLS openers with the March 12th, 2-1 comeback win over Seattle, as FW Joao Plata assisted on both goals, each coming late in each half … In the 44th minute, a Plata corner kick found newcomer MF Sunny at the corner of the box, his pinpoint header giving the Spanish-raised Nigerian a goal on his first-ever MLS shot … then, in the 86th minute, a Plata free kick sailed across the box to FW Juan Manuel Martinez, whose offering far post found DF Jamison Olave, who outjumped the SEA ‘keeper to give RSL the full 3 points …

OPENING NIGHT AT THE RIOT: In actuality, Real Salt Lake kicked off the home portion of its 12th season 10 days earlier on March 2, succumbing in a 1-1 elimination draw against Mexican power Tigres UANL, which had won the home leg 2-0 back on Feb. 24 in Monterrey … That night’s match – RSL’s first knockout-round SCCL contest at Rio Tinto Stadium since an 0-1 loss on April 27, 2011 – marked the 3rd-largest crowd for RSL at the venue, as a sold-out, standing-room only mass of 20,921 was only 84 shy of surpassing the 21,004 that saw RSL defeat LA, 3-0, last Sept. 19, and just 53 shy of eclipsing the 20,956 that saw Kaka and Orlando last July 4 in another 1-1 draw … ALWAYS “SUNNY” AT THE RIOT: In addition to Movsisyan and Wingert, RSL has added an experienced, pedigreed midfield presence in Nigerian MF Sunday Stephen, the former Valencia man who has been playing professionally in Turkey in recent years … Known simply as “Sunny” (which is what will appear on his jersey), the 27-year old was capped by the Super Eagles in 2010 after an extensive youth international career with Spain, where he emigrated as a 15-year old … His reputation as a young starlet saw his Second Division club, Poli, Ejido, reject lucrative transfer overtures from the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico … After 8 years in Spain from 2005-13, Sunny has played just 50 games in Israel, Bulgaria and Turkey in the last two seasons before signing with RSL … A two-way midfielder known for his crisp passing and defensive bite, Sunny provides depth in midfield alongside Kyle Beckerman, Luke Mulholland, John Stertzer, rookies Danilo Acosta and Omar Holness, and behind Javier Morales & Jordan Allen … BURRITO BACK FOR FULL SEASON: The biggest benefit for RSL’s inability to secure Yura Movsisyan’s transfer from Spartak Moscow in last Summer’s window was GM Craig Waibel’s “backup” signing of Argentine FW Juan Manuel Martinez from Boca Juniors … Nicknamed “Burrito,” Martinez immediately injected a spark into the RSL attack, as the club scored eight goals in his first four games, the outside winger atop the 4-3-3 offering a secondary playmaker option, a scintillating work rate and a defensive dimension that accelerated how Joao Plata & Olmes Garcia, among others, understood their roles in the diamond departure … Martinez and his family have assimilated so quickly to life in Utah that he day after RSL’s late-October elimination from the MLS Cup Playoffs, Martinez asked for a contract extension, and later told Waibel in his season-ending exit meeting that the club and its fans “have seen only about 70-75% of what I can do” in an initial eight games that saw a goal, an assist and the creation of dozen other quality scoring chances … 10TH SEASON ON WASATCH FOR ICONS KYLE, NICK, JAVI: RSL’s iconic trio of GK Nick Rimando, Capt. Kyle Beckerman and MF Javier Morales arrived with RSL throughout the 2007 season, making this year each player’s 10th with the Claret-and-Cobalt … Rimando – already the all-time MLS leader in shutouts (125) – could eclipse Kevin Hartman in several categories, including wins (needs 2 to surpass), starts (3), games (10) and minutes (298) … “The Wall of the Wasatch” is roughly ½ a season away from securing G.O.A.T. (“Greatest of All Time) status … Beckerman continues racking up the numbers as Major League Soccer’s all-time leader amongst field players in games played (390), the RSL captain is just 804 minutes from overtaking Steve Ralston, the former Tampa Bay/New England star … Beckerman is also 11 starts from eclipsing Ralston for every field-player service category, with this season – his 18th in MLS – as the league’s all-time leader in both fouls (594) and yellow cards (89) … Those totals and that distinction sounds worse than it actually is, considering the dreadlocked warrior averages just one foul every 55 minutes played – mostly at the defensive midfielder position – and just one yellow card every 4.5 games played …

    RIO TINTO STADIUM – Fri., July 22, 2016 – 9:00 p.m. MT

Morales, known as “The Maestro,” entered 2016 off back-to-back seasons that have seen him notch career highs in goals (9 in 2014 / 8 in 2015) and assists (12 in each of 2014/15) … Javi was stellar in last Fall’s SCCL group stage, providing assists on each of the club’s last 3 goals, the trio coming at home in 2-1 and 1-0 wins over Santa Tecla (SLV) and Municipal (GUA) to secure 10 of a possible 12 points and win Group G, earning the #3 seed in the knockout round … Morales has long served as the fulcrum for the RSL attack, the ageless wonder returning to the field in Oct. 2011 after a shattered ankle suffered just 2 weeks following the CCL Final loss to Monterrey … Morales, with 46 goals and 79 assists in 225 career MLS games, boasts nearly 25% of the Utah club’s all-time scoring, despite missing all of 2005/06 and most of 2007/2011 … Javi needs just one game-winning goal to match former FW Alvaro Saborio for club’s all-time lead (21), the Argentine already with one more game-winning assist (18) than captain Beckerman (17) … REGGAE BOYZ FIND A HOME IN UTAH: Several of Jamaica’s finest have found a home in Utah, as Head Scout Andy Williams – the club’s first-ever pick in the 2005 expansion draft and a beloved fan favorite for several seasons – and second-year assistant Tyrone Marshall, an MLS/CONCACAF National Team legend in his own right – have recruited active Reggae Boyz Demar Phillips (left back, now in his 2nd RSL season) and Omar Holness (defensive midfielder, rookie year) to Sandy … “OC” & OMAR REUNITED: Holness was drafted in January’s MLS SuperDraft out of the University of North Carolina with RSL’s #5 pick, the second consecutive year that RSL took a Tar Heel in the college draft (DF Boyd “OC” Okwuonu, 27th overall, 2015) … Okwuonu was actually Holness’ host during his recruiting visit back in 2012, as the Jamaican international played in Chapel Hill for three seasons with Okwuonu … WELSHMAN GRADUATES FROM MONARCHS: As RSL’s minor-league affiliate, the Real Monarchs (USL) kick off its second campaign on March 26, the club’s first “graduate” from USL to MLS is FW Emery Welshman, now signed to the RSL roster as a backup winger/target man … Welshman, the Guyana National Team standout who grew up in suburban Toronto, Ontario, played his college career at Oregon State … In 2013, he was a first-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft for Toronto FC (16th overall), appearing in 2 games (1 MLS, 1 Amway Canadian Championship) … WELSHMAN UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY: On Monday, RSL announced that FW Emery Welshman has undergone successful surgery to remove a right hip osteochondroma … The procedure was completed on Saturday, July 9, at Massachusetts General Hospital by Dr. Francis Hornicek, M.D. … It is the first of two surgeries Welshman will undergo, the second scheduled in approximately six weeks in Vail, Colorado to repair a small labral tear and femoral acetabular impingement … “Knowing this is a two-step process for Emery, we are extremely happy that the first surgery was considered a success and we move on to supporting him as he moves into the next step in his recovery,” Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel said … Welshman, 24, joined RSL after playing the 2015 season with Real Monarchs. He was second on the team with six goals in 2015 and this year made three appearances, totaling 76 minutes while on loan to the USL club from Real Salt Lake …

ACADEMY INFLUENCE EXPANDING QUICKLY: The RSL pyramid continues to expand, as MF Jordan Allen, DF Justen Glad, DF Phanuel Kavita, MF Danilo Acosta, GK Lalo Fernandez and MF Adolfo “Fito” Ovalle each occupy one of the 28-30 senior roster spots for RSL … Ovalle – as in 2015 – will likely be assigned to the USL Monarchs as the one “permanent” player allowed under MLS rules, while the rest of the group should log heavy minutes with both RSL and the Monarchs, depending on time of year, competition needs, international call-ups, etc. … JUSTEN “GLADLY” GIVES UP #14: Glad – who appeared in 7 MLS games last year, starting six, playing a total of 551 minutes at both center and outside back – showed up this preseason with an added 20 pounds of muscle, the 19-year old growing ever more comfortable in his 3rd professional season since eschewing a full ride at Stanford to pursue his RSL dream … A fixture in the U.S. National Team youth setup, Glad expects to be eating for free on the road this year, thanks to conceding the jersey #14 he has worn the last two seasons to incoming FW Yura Movsisyan, who chose the digits he wore from 2007-09 instead of the then-available #10 shirt … PLATA NOW #10: With Yura choosing #14 and Glad moving to #15, fourth-year RSL man Joao Plata switched from #8 to the vaunted #10 this season, that jersey vacated with former MF Luis Gil’s move to Queretaro (Liga MX) in December … Plata joins Gil, Robbie Findley, Arturo Alvarez & Mehdi Ballouchy as part of the quintet to have worn #10 in RSL’s 12 seasons … BURRITO, ALLEN, GARCIA ALSO CHANGING JERSEYS: Amidst the flurry of changes, Argentine FW Juan Manuel “Burrito” Martinez has ditched the #22 he wore the last eight games year for his preferred #7, his old Boca Juniors jersey number … Burrito’s decision meant that third-year RSL man Jordan Allen had to switch, so he combined his old #7 with his desired #10 to wear #70 this season … Perhaps feeling left out after his buddies Plata and Martinez switched, FW Olmes Garcia – now in his fourth season with RSL – has flipped his jersey from #13 to #80, reasons unknown … RSL ACQUIRES TARGET ALLOCATION MONEY: Back on Thursday, March 10, RSL GM Craig Waibel acquired Target Allocation Money from Toronto FC in exchange for the right of first refusal to former RSL-AZ Academy FW Ben Spencer, who has been with TFC II (USL) the last year after playing for Indy Eleven (NASL), FC Molde (Norway) and the Chivas USA Academy after departing RSL-AZ in 2011 …

Attaining the “.500” mark in 2014, in MLS game 293, allowed the club to call itself “even” for the first time since May 2005, with a 3-3-2 mark early in its history ... RSL dropped to 32 games below .500 on May 24, 2008, after a 1-2 loss at Dallas, the club’s low-water mark in terms of overall record ... RSL went 8-5-8 the rest of the way to earn a playoff berth, knock out #1 seed Chivas and even host the West Final that season ... The early-season form has pushed RSL back to three games above .500 on the heels of the recent road trip … ALL-TIME GOAL DIFFERENTIAL CREEPING UP AS WELL: It took 265 all-time regular-season matches, but the 4-1 victory @CHV in May 2013 put RSL’s all-time aggregate goal differential in MLS play deep into positive territory at the conclusion of a game, the club scoring 341 goals all-time while conceding 338 ... Back on Sept. 21, 2011 in a 3-1 win at Red Bull Arena in New York, RSL briefly got its goal +/- head above water, but a late Joel Lindpere goal dropped the side to even, three days before a 1-4 road loss at D.C. United ... When Jason Kreis took over RSL 4 games into the club’s third season in 2007, the differential was minus-43, eventually dropping as low as minus-57 after a loss at Dallas on May 24, 2008 - more than 6.5 years ago ... It took 160 regular-season matches, but RSL finally made up the difference ... Last year’s April 5 win over SJ allowed RSL to set a new all-time +33 high-water goal differential mark, now back to +20 after the recent losses in Dallas and Vancouver ...

WASATCH FORTRESS AGAINST INTERNATIONAL VISITORS: After the 1-2 loss Tuesday to Inter Milan (ITA), all-time RSL still boasts a total of 27 wins on Utah soil against international opponents in either CCL play (8-1-2, with a 21/7 goal advantage), exhibitions (7-5-4, 21/19 difference) or against visiting Canadian MLS teams (12-2-4, with a 33/15 +/-) … Since moving into Rio Tinto Stadium in October, 2008, RSL owns a 22-3-7 (win-loss-draw) mark against int’l clubs or in CCL competition … Mexican clubs are now 1-1-1 in Sandy in meaningful games, as Cruz Azul (2010 group stage) fell 1-3 at RSL prior to Monterrey riding a Humberto Suazo dagger in April 2011 in the second leg of the 2010/11 Final … HOW RSL GOT THERE: By eliminating Municipal (Guatemala) and Santa Tecla (El Salvador) last fall, RSL joined D.C. United, LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders as MLS placed four teams in the CONCACAF knockout round for the first time ever, each facing off against a Liga MX side … As it was back in the 2011 CCL Final, RSL was eliminated by a team from Monterrey, Mexico, as Tigres UANL – the current Mexican champions – defeated RSL, 3-1, on aggregate … WALL OF THE WASATCH INDEED: Iconic RSL GK Nick Rimando saw his CCL shutout streak snapped at 593 minutes Feb. 24 with Tigres’ first goal (he last allowed a goal in the 14th minute of RSL’s 0-1 loss at Herediano in July 2012), while his HOME clean sheet streak totaled 406 minutes, snapped with a 91+ clincher by Andre-Pierre Gignac at the death … Rimando – who saved a PK in 1st half stoppage against Gignac in Monterrey a week earlier – had not conceded at Rio Tinto Stadium in CCL play since the Humberto Suazo series-winner in the 44th minute against Monterrey at the RioT back in April 2011 … MULHOLLAND MOVING UP THE RANKS: RSL MF Luke Mulholland’s seeing-eye long-range blast May 28 in Columbus gave the Englishman the distinction of becoming the 10th player in RSL annals to achieve double-digit totals in goals (11) and assists (10) … MORALES, WINGERT CELEBRATE START #200 FOR RSL: RSL men Javier Morales and Chris Wingert each made their 200th career MLS reg. season starts for RSL back on June 2 at Yankee Stadium in the club’s 3-2 win … Morales (226 appearances, all with RSL) and Wingert (218) long ago surpassed the double-century mark in reg. season appearances for the Claret-and-Cobalt, while Wingert – who has also appeared for Colorado (16), Columbus (49) and NYCFC (27), as well as RSL – boasts a total of 310 career games played in his 13 MLS seasons …
