GAME 4
BEGINS ON THE ROAD FOR THE RANGERS
CHALK TALK WITH COACH BEDNAR
The stadium is named after Nick Carter, the head
football coach for the Rangers and North’s athletic
director from 1959-1977. The stadium was formally
dedicated to Carter prior to the start of the 1978
season.
Carter was one of the original North High Athletic Hall of
Fame inductees in 2007.
Nick Carter Stadium was built in 1959 and originally, the
stadium was home to both the North Rangers and the
South Rebels - until 1963 when South built its own facility.
Nick Carter Stadium is home to the North Rangers
football teams, the North boys and girls soccer squads
and boys and girls track teams at the school. The
stadium seats 5,500 and the surface is natural grass.
The annual Ranger Relays are run at Nick Carter Stadium each spring, one of the marquee track and field events in Northeast Ohio.
"Absolutely when you play a team like Chardon you need to be
disciplined and play assignment football."
'I think we are still a confident team and we know we can be a
good football team. We have to clean up mistakes and the sense
of urgency is certainly heightened now that we are 1-2. The league
is a good one and there are good teams so we need to be at our
best for the rest of the season."
- North assistant coach Jason Bednar, as guest on Varsity Chalk
Talk at the Hooley House on Monday, Sept. 12
Week 4 is the opening of play in the WRC and
North will get a stiff test right off the bat as the
Rangers travel to Geauga County to take on
league favorite Chardon.
The Hilltoppers are 3-0 with three wins coming
by a combined score of 139-14. North is 1-2 on
the season following a 27-13 setback at
unbeaten Maple Heights in Week 3.
Chardon is led by standout quarterback
Tommy Benenati. The traditional Hilltoppers
ground attack is a formidable one again, with
Joey Dinko and Joe Cyvas complementing
Benenati.
Defensively, Chardon has allowed just 14 points
in three games and has a shutout to start the
season vs. West Geauga.
North is led offensively by a physical offensive
line, QB Jake Tanski, running back Brett Payne
and do-it-all athlete Kenny Streb.
Defensively, the Rangers will need all hands on
deck to slow down the Hilltoppers stellar
offense which has averaged 46 points per
contest.
The teams played an epic game in 2015 at
Nick Carter Stadium, won by Chardon, 41-39.

North put up a solid defensive effort in a
Week 3 road trip to unbeaten Maple
Heights, but fell to 1-2 on the season with
a 27-13 loss to the Mustangs.
Rangers quarterback Jake Tanski threw for
162 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the
loss for North.
Kenny Streb caught six passes for 90 yards
and two scores for the Rangers.
The score was tied at 6 in the first quarter
after Tanski’s first TD pass to Streb. Maple
Heights scored 13 points in the second
quarter to assume control and a 19-6
advantage at halftime.
The Mustangs scored a touchdown and a
2-point conversion in the third quarter to
go up, 27-6, before Streb’s second
receiving TD cut the deficit to 27-13 in the
fourth.
Brett Payne had 64 yards rushing on 19
carries for the Rangers.
Brandon Adams, a transfer from Brush,
had 111 yards on the ground and two
scores for Maple Heights.
Kentucky recruit Jovantae Richardson
had four catches for 130 yards and two
touchdowns for the Mustangs (3-0).
OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK - Six starters return to the
offense, seven if you count kicker Ethan Ziegenfuss,
an underrated weapon the team has. The vaunted
Wing-T, with all its fakes, misdirection and quick-
hitters, is led by returning starter Tommy Benenati, a
great athlete and cerebral decision-maker. Having
fellow backs Joey Dinko, Joe Cyvas and Dom Ricci
all back this year gives Chardon a tremendous skill
set.
The line is huge, with 223-pound Eric Molle the
smallest of the group. Tackles Justin Stanko (275)
and 6-7, 263-pound Jared Barker (son of former
Tribe great Len Barker) are road-graders. The run
offense isn’t built really to make comebacks, but
will the Toppers even trail much this year? Chardon
will hammer away and more often than not win
the time of possession battle in a landslide.
OUTLOOK: DEFENSE - Perhaps the most important
thing is Chardon only has three two-way players —
DL Dustin Clute, LB Joe Cyvas and DB Ethan
Ziegenfuss. That should keep fresh bodies on the
field to play defense. The front seven is big, strong
and active. Clute and fellow D-lineman Ryder
Davis are considered the strongest players on
team. Cyvas is a key returner at linebacker, and
the addition of Chase Kline, a transfer from NDCL,
helps make the linebacking position that much
stronger.
As with the offense, there’s very good speed in the
defensive backfield with plenty of experience in
Jesse Smith and Ziegenfuss. If the offense eats up
plays and clock like it usually does, the defense
should be well-rested. There are some great
offenses in the WRC, so there’s no doubt this group
will get tested every Friday.

FAMILIAR FACES
2015 FINAL WRC STANDINGS
RANGERS NEWS, NOTES AND HEADLINESShawn Dodd didn’t need directions
to get to Stevens Boulevard when
he was approved as the next
coach of the North Rangers in
March 2015.
He didn’t need to be led down
the hallways to the football office
or the weight room. And he
definitely didn’t need much
persuading either to take over
the football program at his alma mater.
Dodd, who was a standout wide receiver for the Rangers
during his playing days from 1987-1990, was approved as the
head football coach at North in early March 2015.
“Being an alumni, still living in the community, this was the
right move for me and my family,” said Dodd, a 1991
graduate of North. “How many guys get a chance to go
home to coach their alma mater? I can’t wait. I couldn’t be
more excited about a job. And we are going to be successful
here, I believe that, I don’t just hope it happens eventually.”
Dodd begins his second season at North after a four-year stint
at Gilmour, where he led the Lancers to back-to-back 8-2
seasons and Division V playoff berths.
Dodd is adding some stability to a Rangers program that has
three coaches in as many years following Mike Bell and
another former North grad – George Burich.
Dodd indicated he’s in this for the long haul.
Dodd remembers being part of the Rangers’ football team
that broke a 33-game losing streak during his junior year in a
1989 game at Brush, then going 4-6 as a senior in the fall of
1990 – including a 41-20 rout of rival South in Week 10.
A year later, under then-coach Dan Kukura, the Rangers
went 8-2.
“North is the only place I would ever have taken a phone call
from, and the response from other North grads and guys I
went to school with and played football with has been
overwhelming,” Dodd said.
Dodd, a long-time sixth grade social studies teacher at
Euclid, is now an English / Language Arts teacher at
Willoughby Middle School.
Dodd is a father of three and is married to Kim Shumar-Dodd.
They live in Willowick.
Since 2009, former News-Herald
high school sports reporter Bill
Tilton has hosted a live weekly
high school sports talk show
featuring interviews with players
and coaches, trivia contests and
giveaways at Hooley House in
Mentor on Monday nights.
Regular guests on "Varsity Chalk Talk” have included
Rangers head coach Shawn Dodd and numerous North
players.
“Varsity Chalk Talk” airs live at Hooley House in Mentor on
Mondays (7-9pm) and will be streamed live on
ESPNCleveland.com and edited down and aired on KNR2
1540-AM as part of the Friday night High School Hysteria
pregame.
A couple of changes to the North coaching staff bring two
alumni into the fold on a full-time basis.
Joe Iveljic, who coached with Shawn Dodd at Gilmour and
played for the Rangers in the late 80s/early 90s, will coach
the defensive line.
Jim Caldrone, a two-time team MVP as a player at North, is
now a full-time defensive coach, working with the safeties.
On Saturday, Aug. 6 as part of a day that included the
Orange and Black scrimmage at Nick Carter Stadium,
North selected its six captains for the 2016 season.
Joey Iveljic, Alex Valletto, Zach Mastrioanni, Curtis
Swearingen, Tyler Swearingen and Chase Axelrod will serve
as Rangers captains this fall as voted upon by their
teammates.

REBELS
1950 - The Cleveland Browns (formerly All American Football Conference ) play the
franchise's first NFL game, beat the Ealges 35-10 in Philadelphia in front of a then record
71,500 fans. The Browns racked up 457 yards in total offense, scoring 21 points in the
second half to put the game away. The Browns used a passing attack that totaled 316
yards and after the game the Eagles coaches and management were upset that
Browns used the pass so much, critizing Cleveland as an 'upstart basketbll team'.
2007 - The Cincinnati Bengals beat the Cleveland Browns 51-45 as Bengals QB Carson
Palmer throws 6 TDs. Browns QB Derek Anderson is just as efficient, tossing five
touchdowns. Cleveland had 554 total yards and Cincinnati had 531.
