Scientific Paper / Scientific Poster

Objectives

1. To recognize challenges facing healthcare systems nowadays and probe the

potential use of technology and medical science advancement to meet the

challenges.

2. To encourage participants to bridge a gap between basic research and clinical

medicine and come up with further policy implications and possible applications.

3. To engage medical students in policy making and assessment, with a view to

preventing likely ethical, social, and economic problems derived from

technological applications.

Theme

Medical care in the future boasts changes in medical practices as a result of the

advancement of both technology and medical science. Thanks to the astonishing

progress in molecular biology, genetic studies, and modern technology, lots of

diseases once fatal can be nowadays cured completely. Diverse and complex

aspects in today’s medicine nevertheless stand for the uncharted territories that

request further clarification and exploration. It is our strong belief that the

advancement in medical science and technology can benefit not only the healthcare

sector but also the aspect of humanities.

Technological and medicine advancement indeed ameliorate human health;

however, the social, ethical, legal, or economic issues derived from technological

applications in medicine shall not be overlooked. Accordingly, 2016 EAMSC

academic competitions target at providing a platform for discussion on both the

benefits and costs brought by technological and medical advancement.

Numerous sub-themes can be addressed in this conference, and some suggestions

are listed as follows. For each sub-theme, the individual chapter should include an

overall understanding of the addressed technology, science, advances in disease

treatment and public health issues, and possible concerns. The involvement of

Page 5: 2016 EAMSC Competition Guidelines.pdf

P. 5

medical students should also be taken into consideration. Relevant topics for the

conference are included, but not limited to the followings:

Guidelines

● Facilitating Health Care in the Future through Technology Advancement

Technological advancement, particularly in the areas of cloud computing, big

data, personal medical devices, and social media network, is one of the keys to

future health care. We would like to emphasize such sub-themes as big data

utilization in health care delivery, incorporation of social network in disease control,

and promotion of medical accessibility in developing countries via modern

technology. Important topics also include studies on promoting accessibility of

high-tech medicine and establishing sustainable and robust health insurance or

financing mechanism and research in health care workforce. Studies should be

relevant to their original chapters, and associated social, ethical, legal, or economic

concerns should be addressed in respective studies.

● Connecting basic research to clinical medicine: enhancing application of

medical science

Medical science has been rapidly evolving at an unbelievable high speed never

seen before ever since the human genome was decoded. Despite extensive

research in such fields as personalized medicine, genetic study, translational

medicine, molecular diagnosis, few existing studies have been extended to a clinical

context or proven to be truly effective. Participants in the conference are strongly

suggested to explore how knowledge obtained through scientific and public health

research can be used to assist future health care service. Practical examples can be

the discovery of certain risk factors that lead to changes in clinical medicine,

including prevention, cure and other aspects. Participants are also encouraged to

take the involvement of policy implementation and health care system in

connecting basic research to clinical medicine into consideration. Studies should be

relevant to their original chapters while potential social, ethical, legal, or economic

concerns should also be incorporated into the studies.

Page 6: 2016 EAMSC Competition Guidelines.pdf

● Others:

Other topics that is relevant to the main theme of Medical Care in the Future

that is pertinent to each individual chapter will be accepted.

Movie

Objective

1. To foresee the potential medicine development trend

2. To highlight the importance of preparation in the face of future medicine and

medical care.

3. To make participants, who may become the future medical professionals, be

aware of the future advantages and disadvantages in the future career.

Guidelines

1. Imagine what health care system will be like in twenty years, and the prediction

can be made using multiple roles in healthcare settings, including patients,

doctors, or president of a healthcare institution.

2. Any perspective in which describe the future picture or vision is welcomed.

(redundant) Please film a video that conveys your picture, vision, or core value

on future medical care. For example, you may introduce the patient-oriented

facility, high-tech equipment, personalized medicine, telehealth service system,

etc.

3. Example:

✔ Patient - If you are a twenty-year-later patient.

Assume that you get sick 20 years later, and imagine what kind of the medical

care-giving will satisfy you. Besides, think of what experience you would like to

have when seeing a doctor with the advantage of technology, or what life

would be like for beings supported by the health care system .....etc. All of the

above can be your video topics.

✔ Doctor - Imagine twenty years later when you and I become a doctor.

Perhaps the type of your clinic room, the doctor-and-patient-relationship have

significantly changed. You can try picturing the future of doctors, their position

in the huge health care system and how medical institutions will transform due

to technology......etc.

4. Other topics relevant to the main theme "Medical Care in the Future" will be

accepted.
