a worD from our Buying Directorthis may not be our biggest ever Burgundy offer (our main offer in january had 10 times as many producers) but in many ways it is one of our most exciting ever! there may only be 4 producers featured but i can’t help feeling it covers everything that is so exciting and so joyously mesmerising about Burgundy. taking centre stage we have one of the great domaines of the côte de nuits, not just at the top of their game, but knocking one out of the park. the Dujac 2016s are nothing short of sensational. team Dujac embraced the challenges of the vintage and produced a range of wines that excited and over-delivered at every level. none of the other three domaines are run by anyone who has celebrated their 30th birthday yet! first up we have the relative veteran that is maxime cheurlin, who came to Vosne in 2010 to take over the family domaine from his grandmother at the tender age of 19. it’s crazy to think that this is his 7th vintage! we were lucky enough to be there pretty much from day one and it has been remarkable to watch the almost overnight star status he and his wines have gained. Having recently added lots more wines to his portfolio, he releases his 2016s with the world at his feet.next up, we have alix millot who took over from her charming father, jean-marc, just a couple of years ago but has already made quite an impact. She oozes youthful confidence and seems to have an innate feel for things in both the vineyards and the cellars. you can see the pride in her father’s eyes as he recognises what a talented daughter he has. Her 2016s are a delight and in a vintage no-one would have asked for on paper, she has excelled! And, finally, we have the newest recruit and a very exciting addition indeed to our portfolio, in Thibaud Clerget. His first vintage was just 2015, not a bad vintage to kick off with(!) and he has already established quite a following. He makes Volnays that remind us why we love Volnay, being ethereal and elegant and very much the essence of Burgundian

pinot noir. i have no doubt he will go all the way to the top.So there we have it. Something for everyone. it reflects very well just what we are about as a company, bringing you both wines of established pedigree and wines from the next generation of growers that continue to breath life into the most thrilling wine region in the world.

nuitS-St-georgeS

curiously, this family domaine is based in nuits-St-georges but has no nuits! jean-marc’s dynamic and highly motivated daughter, alix, is now running things having assumed control in 2014. She is very much part of the generation of twenty- and thirty-somethings who have set Burgundy alight in recent years with their ambition, insight, energy and sheer talent. Confidence with no hint of arrogance seems to be one of the key ingredients in the make up of these stars of the future, and alix has it in spades, being very focused and clear about what she is trying to achieve and how she should do it. the domaine is run organically, although not certified, and is blessed with various parcels of old vines. new oak is sensibly handled varying from around 20% to 35% depending upon the cru and the volumes made, and extraction is light and delicate, alix generally preferring pumping over (remontage) to pumping down (pigeage). Stylistically the wines are cool with silky tannins and precise detailed flavours.

2016 aSSeSSmentaside from losing a big chunk of their 3 grands crus, clos Vougeot, echezeaux and grand echezeaux, due to frost, 2016 was a very successful vintage for the domaine; the crunch and bite of the vintage adding further detailing to the delicious silky purity of the fruit. as a range, the wines are bright and vivacious with a strong core of energy and purpose to them. alix was even more gentle with extraction than usual, worried that the thick skins would give too much structure to the wines if she pushed too much. these are lovely examples of fine Pinot Noirs, and we recommend you snap up the few cases we have to offer.

côte De nuitS VillageS ‘VieilleS VigneS’this is so delicious one could almost drink it already. lots of sweet but vibrant red fruit flavours with excellent back palate concentration and real drive and freshness on the finish, which gives length and persistence. good job!

2019 6 x 75cl £128 in bond

VoSne romanéethis has excellent intensity for a village wine and really over-delivers. the tannins are impressive and perfectly integrated into the cool, layered, bright fruit flavours. ‘a spicy, fresh and beautifully layered nose reflects notes of both red and blue fruit, floral, tea and a hint of sandalwood. the suave, round and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors possess plenty of sappy dry extract that imparts a caressing mouthfeel to the dusty and beautifully refined finish. This is a classic Vosne that should drink well young and with a few years of bottle age. recommended.89-91 pts’ Burghound.

VoSne romanée 1er cru leS SucHotSThis is a definitive Suchots with a seductive mix of fragrant fruit and spice. perhaps slightly more reticent than usual but wonderfully balanced and refined. A little treat. ‘A slightly riper and definitely spicier nose reveals an elegant mix of dark currant, plum, violet and pekoe tea. the sleek yet succulent and wonderfully rich medium weight flavors brim with sappy dry extract that also imparts a caressing mouthfeel to the mid-palate though the driving and beautifully persistent finish is shaped by a more pronounced core of firm tannins. this is a Suchots of power and punch and at least some patience is advised. this too is recommended. 90-93 pts’ Burghound

cloS Vougeot granD crualix’s style of winemaking is a great antidote to the sometimes cumbersome nature of this sprawling appellation, and she has crafted a remarkably fine featured version that focusses on the prettiness of fruit rather than the earthiness of the terroir. ‘a deft touch of wood sets off the ripe and unusually elegant black cherry aromas that are layered with notes of earth and spice nuances. this is also impressively complex and quite rich with well-structured big-bodied flavors that once again brim with an abundance of dry extract on the mouth coating, balanced, long and serious finish that is less youthfully austere than usual.’ 91-93 pts Burghound.

2023 3 x 75cl £395 in bond

ecHezeaux granD crufrost reduced the usual 16 barrels to a depressing 8, but what has been made should turn out to be lovely. there are 3 different parcels, each adding different elements to the final blend, which perhaps accounts for the subtle complexity that this wine displays. this is cultured if perhaps a little more backward than usual, as so many first affected wines seem to be in 2016. ‘an exuberantly fresh nose displays essence of red cherry, raspberry, spice and once again orange pekoe tea aromas. the succulent, sappy and lavishly rich flavors also possess excellent depth of material along with plenty of dry extract that helps to cushion the notably firm tannins shaping the beautifully persistent and well-balanced finale.91-93 pts’ Burghound

Volnay

Star status awaits thibaud clerget. His father yvon stopped making wine in 2009 and, for the next 6 years, the domaine’s fruit was sold off to a negotiant. meanwhile, thibaud was off learning his craft at the likes of Hudelot noellat and Henri Boillot until in 2015 he was ready to make his début. with the same consummate ease as David gower, who casually hooked his first ball in test cricket to the boundary, thibaud’s transition to fully fledged winemaker was effortless. He was blessed with a stellar vintage with which to kick things off, but the assurance and purity of his first release was nevertheless impressive. A year on and his 2016s have confirmed what a talent he is. Cultured, cool, complex and refined, these are Pinots that display what the côte de Beaune is capable of in the right hands but rarely delivers. quantities of the wines are small so be patient as we will inevitably have to allocate.

2016 aSSeSSmentfrost was an issue here although its biggest impact was on thibaud’s Bourgogne vineyards, which ended up producing nothing at all. Small yields ensured an effortless concentration whilst the pure style of thibaud’s wines combined with the pinot beauty of the vintage make for an impressive and dynamic combination. the wines have thrust and energy throughout with a real core of punctuated bright fruit. allen meadows, writing as his alias Burghound, sums things up very clearly when he writes that his ‘take on the clerget style is one that combines substance with elegance and excellent terroir transparency. there are domaines in the côte today that achieve elegance and transparency but don’t deliver wines with substance and that’s why i am excited to present the domaine to readers.’

Volnaywhat a great start to the range of reds; a village wine that really sings of its origins and punches well above its weight. crunchy, focussed and cool with elegant, silky tannins and enough complexity to lift it above the average. well played. ‘a pretty and ultra-fresh array of various red berries, earth and soft spice elements introduce the intense, vibrant and well-detailed middle weight flavors that conclude in a saline-infused and youthfully austere finale. Good stuff here that should drink reasonably well young. 89-91 pts.’ Burghound

2021 6 x 75cl £165 in bond

Volnay 1er cru carelle SouS la cHapelleas the name suggests, this vineyard lies below the chapelle, in the middle of the village, and this example is a fairly definitive example with lovely elegance and prettiness and a real emphasis on bright red fruits. an absolute steal.‘a more elegant and airier nose reflects notes of a cool mix of both red and dark currant, plum, spice and a hint of violet. the markedly energetic medium weight flavors possess excellent delineation as well as a subtle mineral streak on the lacy and graceful finish. A Volnay of finesse.90-92 pts’ Burghound

Volnay 1er cru SantenotSthis comes from the Santenots Dessous vineyard as opposed to the Santenots milieu which lies above it, on the border with meursault.‘there is a little more clay in the soil here and the wine reflects that with more weight and power’than the the wine above, although in thibaud’s hands it’s still refined and cool. A more masculine version perhaps. it depends what you prefer. again great value. a more deeply pitched array is composed mostly of plum liqueur, dark cherry and notably more earth influence. there is also more volume and muscle though less refinement to the medium-bodied flavors that deliver excellent length on the focused and sneaky long finale. 90-93 pts’ Burghound

2023 6 x 75cl £225 in bond

Volnay 1er cru cloS Du VerSeuilthis is a tiny monopole vineyard totalling just 2/3s of a hectare. it lies above the chapel alongside taillepieds. the detail on this 2016 is delightful. Having drunk a bottle of the 2015 (his first vintage) in La Cabotte (in nuits St georges not london!) recently, which was so precise for a 2015, this subtlety and definition is clearly a characteristic that thibaud exacts from the vineyard. this is quite simply a lovely expression of Volnay and a clear indication of the innate genius of this young winemaker. ‘much more discreet, if not invisible, wood sets off pure, cool and restrained aromas of red currant, raspberry and soft floral wisps. there is really lovely vibrancy to the detailed, sleek and refined medium weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract that serves to buffer the distinctly firm tannic spine shaping the lingering and beautifully balanced finale. this too is really quite good and worth considering. 91-93 pts’ Burghound

Volnay 1er cru cailleretSif only thibaud had more than a 3rd of a hectare of this cru as he has made a wonderful version. Sitting to the south of champans and below clos des chenes, the stony soil has helped produce a wine of poise and minerality with great definition and vibrant red fruit. lots more to come but quite delightful already. ‘there is an overt spiciness to the even more restrained nose that blends notes of both red and dark cherry, plum, violet, lavender and a whiff of warm earth. the sleek, intense and chiseled middle weight flavors flash ample minerality before terminating in a youthfully austere and wonderfully persistent finish that, like the clos du Verseuil, is impeccably well-balanced. 91-94pts’ Burghound

2023 6 x 75cl £300 in bond

pommarD 1er cru leS rugienSthis is serious pommard with a hint of Volnay. thibaud seems to have captured the presence and complexity of les rugiens but with a hint of Volnay refinement. From the lower part of Rugiens Haut, this has undoubted power and enough structure to age for a long time but it also has very sophisticated tannins that provide focus and energy. Serious kit.’an ultra-fresh, cool and pure combination consists of both red and dark raspberry, spiced plum, earth and a suggestion of the sauvage. there is excellent power and detail to the muscular, intense and quite sleek large-scaled flavors that deliver first-rate persistence on the backward and youthfully austere finish. This is textbook rugiens that is also very clearly built-to-age so patience required. 91-94 pts’ Burghound

2024 6 x 75cl £350 in bond

cloS Vougeot granD crufrom the grand maupertuis part of clos Vougeot, this has all the power and intensity one would expect from the appellation, sprinkled with a touch of thibaud magic, which adds lift and focus. the balance and transparency is expecially impressive.’enough wood to comment on frames the spicy and distinctly earthy aromas of plum and black cherry laced with a hint of game. there is outstanding volume to the racy, intense and muscular flavors that possess both good minerality and a polished mouth feel while displaying excellent persistence on the youthfully austere, dusty and harmonious finale. Here too extended patience will be necessary. 92-94 pts’ Burghound

VoSne-romanée

for the second year running, we have moved the release of these wines back to the summer, allowing us a little more time to prize as much wine as possible from young maxime. remarkably, although still only 27, this is maxime’s 7th vintage at this burgeoning Vosne domaine, having taken over from his grandmother in 2010. the estate has some great plots, most of which are very old vines. the natural concentration their age gives the wines allows maxime to not overwork the juice and, although not afraid of new oak, maxime is very aware that the wines have the matter to digest it with ease. over the past couple of years, maxime has been acquiring vineyards, both in terms of future purchases and contracts on the fruit, and the range is now much more sizeable than it was once was, with various new appellations appearing for the first time in 2016. To give him enough space he has expanded into his neighbour’s cellars, which proved a lifesaver when the bigger volumes of 2017 were harvested. it is quite astonishing how in such a small amount of time maxime’s wines have become so sought after and incredibly inflationary on the secondary market. But then you taste them and you understand why. in future years they will be more wine, but for now these 2016s will be in very short supply indeed!

Bourgogne pinot noiras always, this is a great opportunity to get involved with maxime’s wines without breaking the bank as it delivers all his siganture hedonism for a very little money. it’s focus and bright, glossy fruit add a grown up touch to a wine that jumps from the glass with ripe, energetic fruit flavours. fill your boots!

Bourgogne HauteS côteS De nuitSmaxime cheurlin noëllatthis was a new wine in 2015 and a very welcome addition to the range it was, too. it was always going to be a tough act to follow such a strong début (2015 was a great vintage for the wines from Hautes côtes), but this holds its own impressively. quite lithe but ripe and bright with lovely energy and pure, clean, red fruit flavours. Very moreish.

2020 6 x 75cl £125 in bond

nuitS-St-georgeSthis wasn’t as badly hit by the frost as some nuits, but volumes were still affected. it seems more affected stylistically, being more backward than usual and only just beginning to find its feet, as was the case with so many frost affected wines. plenty of power and structure here and a nice contrast profile-wise with the Vosne.`Deep red-ruby. aromas of blackberry, violet and licorice pastille complicated by a hint of coffee torrefaction. Still a touch of reduction to its youthfully bound-up flavors of black fruits, licorice and spices. Finishes with noteworthy length and a firm tannic backbone for village wine.` 88-90 points, Stephen tanzer, Vinous.

geVrey-cHamBertin ‘VieilleS VigneS’maxime cheurlin noëllatthis is a blend of 70-year-old vines from en champs and 60-year-old vines from aux echezeaux, on the borders of morey. it is quite delicious. fragrant, focused fruit with freshness and definition and real drive on the long finish. Very lovely.

2021 6 x 75cl £275 in bond

Beaune 1er cru leS tuVilainSa brand new wine from maxime from a vineyard that lies to the south of Beaune just below les Sizies, where the soil is not too heavy. thus the wine has a brightness and lift not always associated with Beaune, and its drive and energy whip up the earthy character into a frenzy of bright red fruits. the balance is bang on, and this a fine début. ‘the Beaune les tuvilains is a delightful wine – coming from a 1er cru just south of Beaune – quite low on the slope. the nose offer rich and generous fruit – quite intense infused with a earthy minerality. on the palate very good length, weight and concentration – the low yields are really giving this cuvée some extra intensity. it’s nevertheless a elegant and vibrant Beaune – a very interesting glass. Do not overlook the Beaune wines in this vintage.` 91-93 points, Steen Öhman, winehog.

VoSne-romanéethis is a blend of fruit from most of Vosne’s top village sites which delivers exceptional quality for a village wine. there is richness but bite, complexity yet accessibility and a generosity of fruit that will make giving it the necessary time to age that it deserves very diffcult. a real winner. ‘Bright, dark ruby-red. aromas of dark berries and licorice. intense flavors of black fruits, violet and licorice combine a pliant texture with very good energy. lovely fruit intensity, clarity and depth for village wine.` 89-91 points, Stephen tanzer, Vinous.

meurSault 1er cru aux craSThis is Maxime’s first white wine and comes from a 1er cru that borders Volnay, sitting next to the even smaller les caillerets. it is a well-exposed site on a mix of clay and limestone, and there is excellent ripeness and weight without any sense of heaviness. unfortunately there isn’t very much!

2020 6 x 75cl £375 in bond

nuitS-St-georgeS 1er cru aux BouDotSBoudots borders Vosne and, rightly or wrongly, has always been considered more of a Vosne than a nuits. maxime’s version is very much in that camp, athough the 2016 shows more structure and less gloss than usual, thanks in part to the late malo it underwent. it has plenty of substance and fruit intensity. ‘irrespective of the vintage, this 90-year-old vineyard always yields small crops because of tiny bunches. this is another wine that went through malolactic very late, retaining a slight edginess when i tasted it. But beneath the acidity, there’s plenty of plush, textured, Vosne-like fruit, complementing the 50% new oak. 2024-32 tim atkin mw 94 pts

2016 aSSeSSmentthe voluptuous, texturally seductive character of maxime’s wines has been lit up by the vibrancy of 2016, and these wines will excite his loyal followers and entice newcomers in equal measure. on the back of the various new wines that appeared last year there are more this year, including an impressive 1er cru Beaune and a small amount of meursault. the extra wines are a godsend as maxime lost up to 40% of certain wines due to frost. as you would expect, the fruit was ripe but also wonderfully clean and consquently there is a lovely transparency throughout the range. as usual we will have to allocate these wines quite dramatically.

nuitS-St-georgeS 1er cru aux craScras lies to the north of nuits on the Vosne side, sandwiched between Boudots and richemone and just below Damodes. it has all the gloss of Vosne but with a strong mineral drive more typical of nuits. ‘full bright ruby. Blackberry and licorice pastille dominate the nose. Densely packed and energetic, showing serious chalky lift to the flavors of dark berries, spices and licorice. offers a lovely balance of sweet and salty elements and really piques the salivary glands on the long finish. Here`s an example of a cuvée that Cheurlin prefers to its 2015 sibling for its energy and pinot typicity.` 91-93 points, Stephen tanzer, Vinous.

VoSne romanée 1er cru leS cHaumeSmaxime cheurlin noëllatchaumes is basically maxime’s back garden, backing on to his terrace and sitting in the middle of the village. the vines here are pretty much the youngest at the domaine at a mere 40 years, and maxime’s real talent with this wine is to get so much energy and drive into it as the soil has more clay than much of Vosne. there are few better examples of chaumes around than this. ‘the 2016 Vosne-romanée 1er cru les chaumes, which includes around 20% to 25% whole bunch fruit, has a very elegant, restrained bouquet that just lets the blackberry and raspberry fruit flow from the glass, the oak neatly integrated and not imposing. the palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry. Again, I appreciate the purity of fruit, the finesse and the charm of this Vosne-romanée. there is plenty of crunchy red berry fruit on the finish and a pinch of spice. VoSne romanée 1er cru leS Beaux montSthis cuvée gets better and better every year, and this is now basically grand cru in all but name. it has real power and authority coupled with a core of mineral tension that provides lift, direction and nuance. Serious stuff. ‘the 2016 Vosne-romanée 1er cru les Beaux monts was tightly wound on the nose with blackberry, briary, cold stone and light truffle scents. i like the manner in which this gradually unfurls in the glass. the palate is medium-bodied with very fine, slightly chalky tannin. this conveys superb energy, and there is real tension toward the finish, with hints of blue fruit dancing about on the aftertaste. this is fast becoming one of the domaine’s finest cuvées, up there with their grand crus. granDS ecHezeaux granD cruthere is never an abundance of this wine, sadly, but this year there is even less; just 2 barrels. it’s quite an imposing wine yet has plenty of freshness running through its core. Complex, mouth-filling and very long. ‘it has a very pure bouquet with scents of cranberry, wild strawberry, minerals and wilted rose petals that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is more energy and tension here than in the echézeaux, very focused and tensile with almost sorbet-fresh red berry fruit dancing about on the finish. It is not the most aristocratic Grands echézeaux, but it is beautifully crafted and extremely pure. this will turn out as good as the scintillating 2015, if not better. 95-97 pts’ neal martin

we are lucky enough to have been working with this fantastic domaine since we set up flint wines back in 2006 and, like the rest of the wine world, we simply love these wines. the domaine is 50 this year, having been set up from scratch by jacques Seysses, who then continued to buy some fabulous plots throughout the 70s and 80s as he gradually expanded the holdings. things peaked in the mid-noughties with the audacious joint purchase (along with the de montille family) of Domaine moillard which included great plots such as malconsorts, Beaux monts and rSV. with the recent addition of 2 great sites in puligny, the range is now enviably complete. today jacques’ sons, jeremy and alec, and his daughter in law, oenologue Diana Snowden Seysses, run things with equal passion and guile, ensuring that the domaine’s loyal followers are kept wonderously happy with the quality of the wines being produced. there is perhaps a little less new oak and a little less whole bunch than previously, but the wines remain beautifully fragrant and seductive.

morey St DeniS Blanc2016 is not only a great vintage for the Dujac reds, but an impressive one for the whites, too, and this kicks off very positively. Sappy and spicy, with hints of stone and white fruit, it is lively and taut yet full of fruit. Bang on for a village wine.

morey St DeniS 1er cru mont luiSantSit might seem an odd thing to say given the rest of the line up, but this was one of the most exciting wines in the line up. Huge impact and it over-delivers massively. the nose was pure stone and the palate electric. tasted blind, such intensity and minerality would suggest the wine belonged to a much higher echelon. Best example of this wine ever made by a country mile. outstanding. just to be clear, we quite liked this!

puligny-montracHet 1er cru leS folatièreSnow in it’s 3rd vintage, this wine sits very comfortably alongside its peers. In fact we drank the first vintage (2014) recently and it was singing, and this has more potential. folatières is one of the more energetic vineyards of puligny, sitting a little further up the slop as it does, and this underlying vibrancy sits very nicely beneath the up beat fruit of the vintage. Balanced, composed and nicely complex, this should drink beautifully over the next decade or so.

puligny-montracHet 1er cru leS comBetteSthis also the 3rd vintage of this wine, although the holding is only half the size of folatières. it is a little more compact and backward than its stablemate with a terrific core and purity of fruit. The acidity is good and the balance is effortless. quite delightful and lots to come.

morey St DeniS Having recently drunk (blind) a magnum of the ‘76 of this at the finale of our Dujac dinner, which most people thought was a grand cru, it’s not unfair to say that this is one of Burgundy’s truly great village wines that punches above its weight on so many levels. this version is seamless from start to finish with exquisite tannins and texture of fruit. Village wine in name only.

cHamBolle-muSignythis is a little more backward than the morey, but the telltale chambolle svelteness is still evident. possibly there is a little more black cherry fruit though there is wonderful control and precision and, once again, great balance. another cracking village wine.

2022 6 x 75cl £265 in bond

morey St DeniS 1er cru this a blend of 4 different 1ers crus, although the majority comes from one of Morey’s finest, Les Ruchots, which sits on the border of chambolle. this is a wine that sometimes gets a little lost in the extraordinary line up of crus at the domaine, but when it’s as good as this is that seems such a shame. this is well punctuated and crafted with strong fragrance, some spice and bags of cultured fruit. ‘Here too there is just enough wood to notice framing the somewhat more deeply pitched and definitely earthier dark berry fruit-suffused nose. i like the underlying sense of energy on the attractively delineated medium-bodied flavors that flash a touch of salinity on the mildly austere and solidly persistent finale. 89-92 pts’ Burghound

geVrey-cHamBertin 1er cru aux comBotteSUndoubtedly one of the finest Combottes made at the domaine and there have been plenty of good wines. the gravelly minerality, bite and energy are fantastic and light up the intense ripe fruit flavours. this is seriously good. ‘an admirably pure, elegant and airy nose reflects notes of essence of red currant, rose petal and discreet spice nuances. the round and transparent medium weight flavors possess first-rate precision on the balanced finish that displays excellent length. This isn’t particularly dense but the natural finesse of a fine combottes is on parade. 91-93 pts’ Burghound

VoSne romanée 1er cru leS Beaux montSSince acquiring a second, older, well-sited plot of Beaux monts in the big purchase of 2005, this wine has not looked back and continues to blossom. it is rich and quite full with a strong, structured and subtle mineral core that gives drive and lift. lots more to come. ‘a spicy and again admirably pure nose mixes notes of red and blue pinot fruit with those of asian-style tea, dried orange peel and a wide array of floral elements. the sleek, intense and beautifully vibrant medium weight flavors exhibit plenty of minerality on the balanced and impressively persistent finish. This lovely effort is very Vosne and the dense but fine supporting tannins are quite sophisticated. 91-94 pts’ Burghound

cHarmeS cHamBertin granD cruthis has a bit of oomph for a charmes, showing plenty of structure and depth alongside the velvety tannins this is some sappiness and and a certan lusciousness that fills the mouth. A seductive Charmes to be sure. ‘the equally pretty nose is compositionally similar to that of the combottes but with just a bit more earth and underbrush characters. By contrast there is more volume, power and slightly better concentration as well as on the dusty, serious and mouth coating finish where the supporting tannins are slightly firmer. 91-94 pts’ Burghound

ecHezeaux granD cruthis was perhaps the worst affected cru in terms of frost damage, and production was well down. However, the lack of fruit seems to have resulted in extraordinary intensity in what remained. the wine has perhaps more structure than usual but it is bursting with deeply precise, spicy fruit. when this wine hits the high notes, it can be a revelation and this certainly singing! ‘the high percentage of whole clusters is notably evident with its super-spicy and floral nose that includes both red and dark currant as well as a suggestion of earth. the rich, intense and impressively powerful large-scaled flavors are also supported by a firm core of ripe tannins on the strikingly persistent finish. This is excellent and should age effortlessly for years. 92-95 pts’ Burghound

2016 aSSeSSmentas with so much in life, the more one puts in, the more one gets out, and the challenging conditions the Dujac team were faced with in 2016 certainly neccessitated a huge amount of work and dedication on their part. yet they seemed ‘in the zone’ and worked with the vintage not against it, meaning that the cooler character of the growing season became a positive and not a negative. perhaps in part it was the culmination of demanding organic and biodynamic work in the vineyards over a number of years that contributed significantly to the quality of the fruit that was harvested, but it also feels like Dujac just played a blinder. in their own words, they harvested fruit with ‘lively acidity and impeccable ripeness’. tasting through the range again recently, one couldn’t fail to be struck by the energy, intensity, precision and complexity of the wines, heightened by a drawn out, cooler growing season. extraction was very delicately handled, use of new oak was fairly conservative, not exceeding 70% for the grands crus, and, though varying a touch from cru to cru, whole bunch use was about 80% overall. great pinot is about nuance, and this vintage at Dujac has it in spades. undoubtedly one of their great successes.

VoSne romanée 1er cru aux malconSortSquite simply, this is brilliant. Having just tasted every vintage ever made (in a great vertical tasting) and being wowed by many of them, especially those vintages since 2012, this is potentially the best yet. it is almost flawless. layered, mineral, texturally gorgeous and wonderful electricity throughout projecting the fine-featured fruit on into infinity. ‘a more deeply pitched array of violet, spice, dark currant, earth and floral aromas introduce the rich, robust and obviously powerful big-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the driving and built-to-age finish. Textbook Malconsorts in every sense including the need to age it. 92-94 pts’ Burghound

cloS St DeniS granD cru There is always the first world problem of arguing the toss over which of the 2 clos’ one prefers. this writer should perhaps abstain from the debate as he has a long standing affinity with the St Denis version, but it would be hard to stay silent on the matter when presented with such a beautiful example of this fabulous wine. the detail combined with its integral ethereal character is intoxicating. if you don’t like this kind of wine then you should stop buying Burgundy! Bursting with energy and refinement yet also wild intensity. Brilliant. ‘in the same fashion as the echézeaux the whole cluster vinification is evident with the notably prominent spice and floral elements that add breadth to the cool and ultra-pure aromas of red currant, cherry and discreet wood nuances. The delicious and strikingly refined medium weight flavors possess flat-out stunningly good intensity on the saline and hugely long finish. This is a CSD of focused power and refinement. 93-95s pts. cloS De la rocHe granD cruthis is a broader wine and perhaps more voluptuous. its structure is a little more overt but there is a stack of fruit to soak it all up. lots to come. ‘a restrained and almost mute nose only grudgingly displays its blend of various red berries, spice and pretty floral wisps. There is terrific intensity to the sleek and beautifully delineated flavors that possess evident power on the stony, deep and gorgeously long finish. The supporting tannins are both ripe and firm and this beauty is going to require extended cellaring. 92-94pts’ Burghound

BonneS mareS granD cruif this turns out to be as good as the recently enjoyed ‘99, which was only just hitting its stride from magnum but was stunning, then we are all in for a treat, well those lucky enough to be allocated some are! The finesse for a wine of such undoubted power is awesomely impressive, and this is wonderfully complete and dynamic. Very long and very serious. ‘the cool essence of red pinot fruit is cut with plenty of earth along with background notes of violet, lavender and tea. the palate impression of the big-bodied flavors is more powerful still if less refined and i very much like the focus on the hugely long but very firmly structured finish. The Bonnes Mares chez Dujac virtually always ages exceptionally well and the 2016 version will be no exception.93-95 pts. Burghound
