(NOVEMBER-DECEMBER)GOSE ISLAND IPA 5.9% ABV / UNITED STATES 18 OZ. DRAUGHT / $8.19India Pale Ale recalls a time when ales shipped from England to India were highly hopped to preserve their distinct taste during the long journey. The result is a hop-lover’s dream with a fruity aroma, set off by a dry malt middle, and long hop finish.

Creamy and effervescent, typical of unfiltered Beers, a delightful ticklish mouthfeel. Aromas of caramel, honey and plum dominate and emphasize the Beer’s malty, spicy flavour. Unmistakable hints of apple and grapefruit bring in a fruity freshness.

A microbrewery or craft brewery is a brewery that produces small amounts of Beer, typically much smaller than large-scale corporate breweries, and is independently owned. Such breweries are generally characterized by their emphasis on quality, flavour and brewing technique. The micro-brewing movement began in the United Kingdom in the 1970s although traditional artisanal brewing existed in Europe for centuries and subsequently spread to other countries. As the movement grew and some breweries expanded their production and distribution, the more encompassing concept of brewing emerged.

First brewed in 1925 by Grupo Modelo, Corona is famous for its iconic bottle. In 1940, the brewer was the first to print its label directly on the bottle.

Until the 19th century, the German word Lagerbier referred to all types of bottom-fermented, cool-conditioned Beer, in normal strengths. In Germany today however, the term is mainly reserved for the prevalent Lager Beer styles, these Beers are distinguished by their colours, and referred to as a (Bavarian) "Helles" (pale), or a "Dunkel" (dark), though both words may be used as adjectives to describe other types of Beer. The popular Pilsner style, which is more heavily hopped, although it is also a pale Lager, is most often known as simply "Pilsner" (or "Pils") and generally is called neither a "Lagerbier" nor a "Helles". In the United Kingdom, the term Lager commonly refers specifically to pale Lagers, many of which are derived from the Pilsner style. Worldwide, pale lager is the most widely consumed and commercially available style of Beer.

Blonde Lagers are very pale in colour and tend to be clear, crisp, and dry, with low-to-medium bitterness and aroma from hops and some sweetness from malt. After an initial fermentation, the Beer would be given a second lagering period at a low temperature, and then would be stored in refrigerated Beer cellars. They could be kept for a few weeks or several months, during which time the drink would mellow and clear.

HELLES.When the golden and clean Lagers of Plzen (Bohemia) became all the rage in the mid-1800's, München brewers feared that Germans would start drinking the Czech Beer vs. their own. Munich Helles Lager was their answer to meet the demand. A bit more malty, they often share the same spicy hop characters of Czech Pils, but are a bit more subdued and in balance with malts. "Helles" is German for "light". Helles has almost no up-front bitterness, but is accented with a subtle malt character. Lingering notes of hops are present on the palate and nose, and the finish of this Beer style is never harsh, making it a great session Lager made purely of Beer’s four core ingredients (water, hops, malt, and yeast).

With more than 600 years of brewing tradition, Spaten is one of the world’s most recognized breweries deep gold, gentle-hop aroma , bread and citrus flavour with a smoky note on the finish.

ALES.Looking back through Beer history, Ales are considered the Beer of antiquity. Ales come in a very wide range of flavours and styles. One of the two main families ofBeer, Ales have been around much longer than their Lager counterparts. Ales are fermented with a top-fermenting yeast strain that usually performs well at warmer

temperatures. This made Ale ideal for brewing in the days before refrigeration. Ales tend to be more complex and bolder than Lagers, and are credited with starting the craft Beer movement.

BLONDE ALES.Blonde Ale also called Golden Ale is a straw to medium-blonde Ale that has moderate bitterness and maltiness. The style is closely related to traditional mass market Lagers, and was originally intended as a way of transitioning mass market consumers to craft Beers. Ale is a wide category that encompasses both easy drinking moderate-alcohol Beers, and big bold high-alcohol brews. Many Blonde Ales were brewed to compete with Pilsners and other Lagers, while the higher ABV Beers were often also alternatives to gin, which was heavily taxed in Belgium. These Beers are as varied as the brewers that produce them.

Oast House Brewery

FARMHOUSE / SAISON ALE Farmhouse Saisons Ales were traditionally brewed in the winter, to be consumed throughout the summer months. Not so long ago it was close to being an endangered style, but over recent years there's been a massive revival; in the U.S.A. especially. This is a very complex style; many are very fruity in the aroma and flavour. Look for earthy yeast tones, mild to moderate tartness. Lots of spice and with a medium bitterness. They tend to be semi-dry with many only having touch of sweetness.

TRIPELS.The Belgian Tripel: a pretty damn fascinating style of Beer to say the least, it is a beverage of great awe. Those in the know might even associate the Tripel with Trappist monasteries and their long history of brewing. Surprisingly though, the style hasn't been around for that long. It wasn't until post-World War II that the style was incepted although its precise origin is more or less a product of the Belgium Trappist Monk community. Tripels are commonly light pale in appearance, which probably came about by the influence of Pilsners and other pale Lager styles, and their massive popularity during the time period. More specifically, after WWII the Trappist monks at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the town of Westmalle brewed up a batch of strong golden coloured brew. Westmalle Trappistenbier Tripel, the quintessential Belgian Tripel that many brewers strive to emulate, was born. Traditionally, Tripels are bright to gold in colour, which is a shade or two darker than the average Pilsner. Head should be big, dense and creamy. Aroma and flavour runs along complex, spicy phenolic, powdery yeast, fruity/estery with a sweet finish. Sweetness comes from both the pale malts and the higher alcohol.

St. Feuillien Tripel Ale8.5% ABV / BELGIUM / 330 ML BOTTLE / $12.25

This Beer has a white, smooth and very compact head. Its pale amber colour is very characteristic revealing a distinctive maltiness. It has a rich aroma with a unique combination of aromatic hops, spices and the typical bouquet of fermentation - very fruity.

Unibroue La Fin Du Monde Ale9% ABV / CHAMBLY, QUÉBEC / 341 ML BOTTLE / $6.75

Floral bouquet, aromas of honey, spice, coriander, malt, and alcohol with a complex palate of malt, fruit and spice notes followed by a smooth, dry finish.

STRONG DARK ALES. For those who seek a bit of mystery and intrigue, look no further than Belgian Style Strong Dark Ale. The mystery in this dark Beer comes with the complexity of the Beer, which is largely determined by the brewer’s intent. Intrigue comes from the sometimes deceivingly high alcohol that can hide from the senses behind the dark Ale’s aromas and flavours. Deep amber to dark brown in colour with a generous, creamy tan head, Belgian Strong Dark Ales deliver a range of rich, dark malt sweetness and toastiness, dark fruity esters, peppery phenolic spiciness and other sensory treats. As in most Belgian Ales, these characteristics are all generally balanced nicely, with enough background hops to keep the sweetness in check. Most Beers in this style are produced in Belgium or in craft breweries in North America. Many of the Beers represented in this category are brewed in the classic Belgian style and hail from some of the most acclaimed abbeys, monasteries and historic breweries in the world! These Beers are bold and complex and often showcase aromas of dark fruit.

Unibroue Maudite Ale 8% ABV / CHAMBLY, QUÉBEC 341 ML BOTTLE / $7.10

Maudite is a mahogany-coloured, rich-tasting premium Beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas. Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

ESB's are essentially more aggressive and more balanced Bitters, both in alcohol and hop character, but nothing overpowering. Colour range will be similar, though leaning towards the darker end of the scale; dark golds to copper. Low carbonation. Malts tend to be more pronounced, often toasty and fruity, with maybe some notes diacetyl. And despite "bitter" being in its name, ESBs are not really all that bitter. They key to an ESB is balance.

INDIA PALE ALES.The initials stand for India Pale Ale. It was the answer to the problem of providing Beer for the British Empire in the East. It was too hot to brew in India, so what was needed was a Beer that could survive the gruelling six-month journey from Britain intact. In the 1780s, a London brewer called Hodgson answered the call by sending out a strong, heavily hopped Beer called October Ale that would normally be aged like wine before drinking. The Beer not only survived the journey, but was found to have improved immeasurably. This was the prototype IPA; the Beer gradually became paler and more refreshing to suit the Indian climate.

STOUTS / PORTERS / BROWN ALES.There’s very little distinction between a Porter and a Stout, but they do have their differences. Porter is a dark, almost black, fruity-dry, top fermenting style. An Ale, Porter is brewed with a combination of roasted malt to impart flavour, colour and aroma. Stout is also a black, roast brew made by top fermentation. Stout, not as sweet to the taste, features a rich, creamy head and is flavoured and coloured by barley. Stouts often use a portion of unmalted roasted barley to develop a dark, slightly astringent, coffee-like character. The distinct style of “Brown Ale” we know today is a relatively recent invention, though the close relative “Mild Ale” was very popular in the late 1800’s and early 20th century. Brown ale emerged in the 20th century as a stronger and sometimes darker version of English mild.

DIEU DU CIEL! ROSÉE D'HIBISCUS5% ABV / FRANCE 330 ML BOTTLE / $6.55

Rosée d’Hibiscus is a soft spoken wheat Beer. The rose colour comes from the hibiscus flowers added during the brewing process. The aromas and flavour of this tropical flower are very prominent in the Beer, giving it a slight acidity and a very agreeable fragrance. It is the perfect thirst quencher on a hot summer day.

Wheat Beers are a style unto themselves, thus a Beer featuring wheat will generally be labelled as such. Wheat does not have much flavour of its own; it contributes more to the body of a Beer, giving it a silky, smooth feel. Due to the amount of protein in wheat, it creates a thick, fluffy head. Flavour-wise, it may add a light (but full-tasting) sweetness and slight tangy-ness. However, the prominent flavours in most wheat Beers (hefeweizens, wit, weisse, etc.) come primarily from the unique yeast strains used.

CIDERS.As long as humankind has collected and/or cultivated apples, they have fermented the fresh juice to produce hard Cider. By fermenting the juice to produce an alcoholic beverage, humankind was able to preserve the juice until the next harvest. This alcoholic beverage was usually safer than the local water source. Plus, if it was made well and consumed in small quantities, you felt better when drinking it. By the dawn of the Roman Empire, the favourite beverages of its citizens were hard Cider.

By Victorian times in England, Cider was the most important beverage. Labourers working in the fields were able to guarantee that a portion of their wages were paid in Cider. In exchange for working in the fields, a labourer was given Cider at lunch with their meals and at the end of the working day, along with a paid wage. English Lords had to make sure they produced a good quality and quantity of Cider each year to attract the best labourers and quench their thirst.

GINGER BEER.Its origins date from the colonial spice trade with the Orient and the sugar producing islands of the Caribbean. It was popular in Britain and its colonies from the 18th century. Other spices were variously added and any alcohol content was limited to 2% by excise tax laws in 1855. Few brewers have maintained an alcoholic product. Current ginger Beers are often manufactured rather than brewed, frequently with flavour and colour additives. Ginger Ales are not brewed. Ginger Beer is still produced at home using a symbiotic colony of yeast and a Lactobacillus (bacteria) known as a "ginger beer plant". Ginger Beer has experienced a marked increase in popularity in recent years.

FRUIT BEERS.Have you tried fruit Beer yet? Despite what you may think, this isn’t just that latest trend. Mixing fruit juice with beer has a long history dating back to the early 1900s in the Munich region of Germany. There is evidence to suggest that fruit and Beer have been companions since the first days of brewing, long before hops were used to “season” Beer.

TRAPPIST ALESMost everyone knows about the monks who brew Beer. Many also recognize the term Trappist Ale. Fewer recognize that Trappist is a special designation that applies to very few breweries in the world. The most famous are the celebrated Trappist breweries of Belgium and the Netherlands – Achel, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle, Westvleteren and La Trappe. While the size of the breweries and the types of Ales produced vary dramatically from abbey to abbey, each one must meet stringent criteria in order to maintain its Trappist designation. The Beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey and under control of the Trappist monks. The brewery, the choices of brewing, and the commercial orientations must depend on the monastic community.

QUADRUPELS.Inspired by the Trappist brewers of Belgium, a Quadrupel is a Belgian-style Ale of great strength with bolder flavour compared to its Dubbel and Tripel sister styles. Typically a dark creation that ranges within the deep red, brown and garnet hues. Full-bodied with a rich malty palate. Sweet with low bitterness and an ABV range of 9% to 13%.

DUBBELS.“Double” Beer. Dubbels are a strong brown Ale with low bitterness, a heavy body and a malty, nutty finish. These Beer's have an ABV of 6.5% to 8%, a colour that runs the range from dark amber to copper and bitterness from 15 to 25 IBUs.

STRONG DARK BEERS. Most Beers in this style range from 8% to 11% ABV and are deep amber to copper-brown in colour. These Beers are dark and complex, with a pronounced richness and a low bitterness of about 20 to 35 IBUs.

TRIPELS. “Triple” Beer. Tripels run from 7.5% to 9% alcohol by volume, and are brewed with high carbonation and high attenuation yeasts to reduce the taste of alcohol. Colour runs lighter than Dubbels and bitterness ranges from 20 to 40 IBUs, though most Tripels have greater than 30 IBUs.

ORVAL.Orval Trappist Strong Ale (Strong Dark) 6.2% ABV / BELGIUM / 330 ML BOTTLE / $11.75In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one Beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this, the Beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

CHIMAY.Chimay Première Trappist Ale (Dubbel) 7% ABV / BELGIUM / 750 ML BOTTLE / $19.95The Chimay Red is a gorgeous Dubbel Ale that displays the technical perfection that has come to be expected in Trappist brewing. Its gorgeous coppery colour and creamy head give the first indication of the richness of the Beer. Aromas and flavours of fruity apricot, figs, and cloves are balanced by a nice hoppiness. Its rich malty body and creamy carbonation are punctuated by a finish that has a refreshing feel and a long lingering Belgian spice, Beautiful.

Chimay White Trappist Ale (Tripel) 8% ABV / BELGIUM / 330 ML BOTTLE / $9.25

Chimay Tripel, with its typical golden colour, its slightly hazy appearance and its fine head is especially characterised by its aroma which results from an agreeable combination of fresh hops and yeast. The Beer's flavour, as sensed in the mouth, comes from the smell of hops. Above all, it is the fruity notes of muscat and raisins that give this Beer a particularly attractive aroma.

Chimay Blue Trappist Ale (Quadrupel) 9% ABV / BELGIUM / 330 ML BOTTLE / $9.75

Chimay Blue is principally distinguished by its character of a strong Beer. This is a Beer whose fragrance of fresh yeast with a light, flowery rosy touch is especially pleasant. Its flavour, noticed when tasting it, only accentuates the pleasant sensations perceived in the aroma , while revealing a light but pleasant touch of roasted malt. This top fermented Trappist Beer, re-fermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

LAMBICS.Lambic is a type of Beer brewed in the Pajottenland region of Belgium southwest of Brussels and in Brussels itself at the Cantillon Brewery. Lambic Beers include Gueuze and Kriek Lambic. Unlike most Beers, which are fermented with carefully cultivated strains of brewer's yeast, Lambic is fermented spontaneously by being exposed to wild yeasts and bacteria native to the Zenne valley in which Brussels lies. This process gives the Beer its distinctive flavour: dry, vinous, and cidery, usually with a sour aftertaste .

The term Radler originates with a drink called Radlermass (literally “cyclist liter”) that was originally created by Innkeeper Franz Kugler in a small town named Deisenhofen, just outside Munich. During the great cycling boom of the Roaring Twenties, Kugler created a bicycle trail from Munich, through the woods, which led directly to his drinking establishment. On a beautiful June day in 1922, a reported “13,000 cyclists” crashed Kugler’s party. Fast running out of Beer, he blended it 50/50 with a lemon soda he could never seem to get rid of and the rest is history.
