EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEIn 2016, SAGE remained the resource for older adults and caregivers in our community. With staff members and the help of more than 300 volunteers,

SAGE’s programs and services reached more than 7,000 older adults and their caregivers.

We proudly celebrated SAGE’s Meals on Wheels 50th anniversary with our community in 2016. Elected officials from the federal, state, and local level recognized this milestone and presented proclamations honoring SAGE. At our celebration, we were joined by New Jersey government and Summit officials, Meals on Wheels of America, and Subaru of America. We honored Kathleen DiChiara, founder of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, and our own Meals on Wheels volunteer, Joan Hoffmann, the longest serving Meals on Wheels volunteer in the country.

SAGE continues to support independent and healthy aging by offering information, referrals, and an array of educational programs, exercise classes, and support groups. Successful partnerships in 2016 included programs with Total Brain Health, Veterans Affairs, Overlook Medical Center, and AARP.

The Spend-A-Day adult day health care program continues to thrive with a growing number of participants enjoying a wide range of stimulating, structured activities. Our HomeCare

program provides care for older adults and keeps them safe, while the Guidance, Planning and Support (GPS) program is assisting with care transitions. SHIP at SAGE counseled eligible Medicare recipients about benefits and presented educational programs in Union County.

Our SAGE Resale Shop and Furniture Restoration Workshop continue to be a source of financial support for SAGE. Furniture, clothes, and various household items are donated to the shop. Our volunteer artisans in the workshop re-cane chairs and restore furniture.

Print and social media promotions highlighting SAGE HomeCare, GPS, and Spend-A-Day services were redesigned and relaunched this year. Our Senior Resource Guide and other print and online communications were redeveloped and reach thousands of area residents and businesses.

SAGE’s work goes beyond our building on Broad Street and extends into the communities we serve. We are truly in this together and thank you for sharing our vision of promoting independence and improving quality of life and meeting the changing needs of older adults and families.

The Good Neighbor Award was initiated in 1996 to honor local organizations that generously share their resources in support of SAGE and older adults in our community.

The Home Health Aide of the Year Award names the individual who is recognized for their continuous dedication and service to providing quality home care to SAGE clients.

The Bob Abelson Carry the Torch Award was created in 2014 to recognize an exceptional SAGE volunteer who continually demonstrates their commitment to the community-at-large.

The Agnes N. Badgley Award was created in 1989 to recognize the invaluable contributions of an outstanding SAGE volunteer.

The endowment is an investment fund established to support the organization’s ongoing expenditures, capital purchases, or to fund specific projects and programs.
